ESX 4.1 help

Hello,
I'm very new to VMware and have recently been trying to help restore multiple VMs on ESX 4.1. We have no remote capabilities at this point so everything has to be done via command line. In a nutshell, most everything was configured to use a SAN (which is failing) and I'd be interested in getting some help copying the VM's to run from local storage. Can anyone help get me started with the necessary commands to accomplish this? The boot process gets stuck on "Restoring s/w iscsi volumes...Enabling software iscsi", but eventually times out and continues. After this there are nonstop "sd 3:0:4:0: still retrying x after 180s" messages occurring. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott,
Welcome to VMware Community,I saw the error message posted in the previous thread.I doubted it is issue with build version. Can you share your build version of esx host.
Have a try with re-scan adaptor.
VMware KB: Performing a rescan of the storage on an ESX/ESXi host
Based on the error message i found few KB below
VMware KB: Booting the ESX host fails with this message in the console: Restoring S/W iSCSI volumes

  • Help Requested - Creating Solaris 10 x64 Virtual Machine on an ESX Server

    Hi All,
I have been trying to create a Solaris 10 64 bit Virtual Machine on ESX and VMWare server Virtualization Platform.
One of the forum entries said - The installer doesn't really care. At every boot, the processor type will be determined and a 32-bit or a 64-bit kernel will be run (unless you override it)
I hence downloaded the iso from http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp and I installed it. When I run uname -a command on the terminal, this is what is displayed -
    SunOS unknown 5.10 Generic_127128-11 i86pc i386 i86pc
This indicates that the kernel is 32 bit right?
Please help me create the 64 bit VM.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Raj.

  • "Copy ESX instruments..." will this help audio engine / CPU efficiency?

I am limping along on a PowerBook G4, so please excuse the old laptop, but maybe someone can help me:
I have an external FW Glyph drive (7200rpm) with all my Logic sounds, including EXS and Ultrabeats, Jam Packs, and other virtual instrument libraries. I have hit some "system overload" moments when playing some sounds such as "Asian Kit", which seem to have a large number of samples within the sounds.
Hence, under Project Settings > Assets, I see that you can check "Copy EXS instruments to project folder". (I currently have checked "Copy External Audio Files to project folder" and "Convert audio file sample rate when importing". I am at 24 bit / 48 kHz.)
My question is: If I check "Copy ESX instruments...", will this aid in my slow CPU speed? I.e., will the sounds be read any quicker off the Glyph if they are copied into the project folder?
Aside from that, is there another way to setup sounds so that the CPU runs most efficiently?
    Thanks for your help.

if your samples and project are located in same FW disk, I don't think that copy samples in the project folder can be helpful... but it is very easy to check... just do it and see the result.
you can try to reduce the EXS24 voices numbers from 64 (defalut) to 16 or so... don't forget to freeze your tracks
I can also suggest 2 or 3 different more "radical" experiment for adding power...
    1) try to instal the system in your external Firewire and use the Powerbook internal for save the project.
    2) you should change the Powerbook Internal disk with a 320GB?
    3) have you tryied to add a PCI slot for external eSata drives?
Important note: remember... in any case your PowerBook G4 is not a super fast machine... so... my suggestion should not be able to help so much!
I only hope to be helpful.
    Thanks

  • ESX 24... ??? HELP.

I have Logic Pro/Logic 8. I am a noob and I am going to order the vidz from macpro... for logic. I wanted to feel it out first and I was trying to access the ESX24 instrument editor. I can not seem to find it. In the Tuts they have on expert village : http://www.expertvillage.com/video/28628_advanced-logic-add-sample.htm >>> the TUT is showing Logic 7. Click on Audio>ESZ24>. I dont see that feature in Logic 8. I have some wave files i want to use in logic on my computer but I wanted to know if anyone had any answers of how to getting them into logic with ES24???
    Thanks..
    Swatflyz.

You can find the EXS editor on the EXS24 itself now. The button to access it is aptly called edit and you'll find it top right on the EXS window, next to options.
Also see the *Logic Instruments and Effects Guide*, it has a whole chapter on the EXS24, starting on page 391.
    regards, Erik.

  • How to tell what was the latest patch installed on VMware ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, 207095

    Hello Guys,
I have been running an old server that was installed as a test system on a DELL workstation - Optiplex GX620 (32 bit).
During the installation I had to confirgure the file: /usr/lib/vmware/installer/Core/TargetFilter.py to change the following line:
    "return interface.GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_IDE" to read:
"return interface.GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_ISCSI" this made it worked and I have been using it for 3 years now. However, at this time I was hoping to update it with the latest patches and updates and I cannot figure out if I have ESXi or just ESX, nor what was my last update and what is required next.
I have used this command to get the following output:
    # vmware -v
    VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 build-207095
... I believe the 3i indicates that I have an ESXi 3.5.0 but is build-207095 the same buid as ESXi 3.5.0 Update 5?
If not, how do I go about updating it? What is the KB # I should download?
I can manage it using vSphere Client 5.5 and I can SSH into it using Putty.
Note: When I run... "# esxupdate --bundle=ESXe350-201302401-I-SG.zip update" from within the folder where its at in the datastore, nothing happens... just a new line is scrolled.
    Also...

    Hello Richardson Porto,
I wanted to tell you that I appreciate the help so far.
Also wanted to point out to you, that the KB indicated above is older than Update 5, which from your instructions is what I have installed. That KB is for U2.
Now, the document definitely has step by step instructions on installing, querying etc. But my problem is ... NOT ALL COMMANDS WORK FOR ME!
This is why I am here because all the instructions I have been reading does not work with my flavor of ESX 3.5.0, 207095... WHY? It has me stumped.
For example, here are some commands the doc asked me to do and they failed: (Note that I had to unzip the folder on my windows box and upload it to /tmp using vSphere Client)
    /tmp # ls

Is there a toolkit I need to install to have these commands or what really am I missing here? Host is in Maintenance Mode and the 1 VM that's on it is off!
I am going to start a new discussion with this NEW ISSUE, since the Heading of this DISCUSSION has already been SOLVED! Thanks again!

  • Try to add the ESX to n1kv it give the below error got (vim.fault.PlatformConfigFault) exception

Hello i m sharing to the forum the discussion we had in fb about my issue with a host see below:
Guys anyone saw this error when u try to add the ESX to n1kv it give the below error
vDS operation failed on host esxXX, An error occurred during host configuration. got (vim.fault.PlatformConfigFault) exception
on the esx it shows correct version of vem version
/var/log # esxcli software vib list | grep cisco
    cisco-vem-v162-esx 4.2.1.2.2.1a.0-3.0.1 Cisco PartnerSupported 2013-10-29
I did try with the version Nexus1000v.4.2.1.SV2.1.1 and then with this is the latest version of cisco Nexus1000v.4.2.1.SV2.2.1a but shows same error
maybe u guys saw it before
    - Robert Burns - Usually means the VSM doesn't have the appropriate VIB file for that version of ESX. You can simply manually install it using ESX CLI. You can pull down the appropriate VIB from VMware's site. Which version of ESX (Build) are you running?
    - ME - i think maybe is related to old config of old n1kv i tried add another host and it works but it doesn t show the same dvs switch name
cannot add this host to n1kv

    /var/log # vmware -vl
    VMware ESXi 5.0.0 build-1117897
    VMware ESXi 5.0.0 Update 2
    - Robert Burns - Are the two N1K's different versions? Likely yes. In that case your VSMs have the appropriate VIB for ONE version of VSM, but not the other.
    - ME - both have the same version
~ # esxcli software vib list | grep cisco
    cisco-vem-v162-esx 4.2.1.2.2.1a.0-3.0.1 Cisco PartnerSupported 2013-10-29

    - ME - but one is already now part of n1kv and the other doesnt want to be added
    - Robert Burns - Have you tried doing a hotswap -u - reboot - then try to re-add the host.
    - ME - the command vemcmd show card shows that he still think he s part of the old n1kv switch  i will try the reload maybe that will help
    - ME - /var/log # hotswap.sh -u - reboot

    - ME - i m trying a reboot of the host ...crossing fingers
    - Robert Burns - Let's take the issue over to support forums and save the group of the spam
    - ME - it s working after a reboot of the esxi host  , it was showing a warning out of sync and i did re-sync in vsphere and it removed the warning.

So just to be clear - your issue is resolved?

  • How to UPDATE ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, build 207095 using SSH or VSphere CLI remotely!

    Hello Guys,
Over the past few hours I have been posting related questions and I have gotten a little closer to updating my server/host.
I have gone to the ESX Server 3i updates (Embedded and Installer) and I have noticed that the first build for ESX 3i is 207095. Which means that I have not done any updates since the installation. CORRECT!
Now... I have been using "ESX Server 3 Patch Management guide, which instructs us to use esxupdate, but it appears that some of the command in that document is not supported on my host.
This post: vihostupdate35 | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs ..... Tells me that I will have to use "vihostupdate35" from a remote CLI which I installed but cannot see how to connect to the server as I cannot find any document that shows the syntax etc.
At this point I am confused and frustrated and just need a little more guidance from someone who could point me to a document or copy and past the procedures I need to use to get this update done.
I have downloaded this file to do the UPDATE: "ESXe350-201302401-O-SG.zip" and I have extracted it on the host on a Datastore and copied it to my "/Tmp/ESXi350" folder.
I have also extracted it there as well just in case I need to browse to the extracted folder, and run any command.
Can anyone out there help me with the correct SYNTAX and METHOD to get this update installed?
I can connect with SSH from a windows machine using puTTy.exe as well as I have VSphere CLI installed on another Windows PC and can browse to the "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin" folder to run "vihostupdate35.pl" I can see it in the folder with a "dir" command:

  • How to get the details of a LUN (Storage Logical Units) presented to an ESX host thru SCVMM 2012

    Hi,
We are working with a UI Add-in for SCVMM 2012 where we should support both Hyper-v and ESX hosts. When added the ESX host and presented few LUNs (out of band operation) from the HP 3PAR array,
we are unable to view the Storage details like Storage Logical unit, Storage Pool and Storage Array when we select the same LUN in the Classification and Pools section of SCVMM.
We tried even with the PowerShell, but couldn’t help. Can you please guide us, how we can get the storage details of a LUN presented to the ESX host which is added in the SCVMM 2012.
    Thanking you.
    Regards,
    Hari

    Hi Jiannan,
No worries, you can go to UDDI client from the main page of PI  i.e. http://<serverName>:<serverPort>/
And you use the search function for  the TModel for your Physical System. Search parameters can use the % wildcard.
Hit the search and you find the UDDI Key for the Physical System.
    Cheers.

  • How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.ova, .ovf) Format

    Hi,
Could you pls help me on following issues?
    1. How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.OVA or .OVF) Format
    2. How to take backup or copy VM from Oracle VM for Converting other formats.
    3. Are we need to use the same version of Manager and Server? Manager Version= Server Version OR  Manager Version < Server Version OR Manager Version > Server version.
I am using manager 3.2.2 and server 3.2.1 Is it OK?
    Thank You,
    Regards,
    Prakash T

Questions: Could you pls help me on following issues?
    1. How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.OVA or .OVF) Format
Answer: The only way I have done this is to import the the Oracle VM into VMware ESX with VMware P2V conversion. The one key thing you have to make sure of here is that if it is a Linux Virtual machine that you are moving to VMware you must start the Virtual Machine in a standard no Xen kernel before you do the P2V conversion as VMware will choke on the any Xen kernel.
Now if you want to go from VMware to OVM follow the instructions on this link: Re: Import VMWare VirtualMachine into OVM 3.2.2.520
    2. How to take backup or copy VM from Oracle VM for Converting other formats.
Answer: Read this white paper for Guidence on Oracle VM Backup's.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/ovm3-backup-recovery-1997244.pdf
    3. Are we need to use the same version of Manager and Server? Manager Version= Server Version OR  Manager Version < Server Version OR Manager Version > Server version. I am using manager 3.2.2 and server 3.2.1 Is it OK?
Answer: I would strongly recommend that you keep the Manager and Servers on the same version.
I know for doing upgrades the Manager should be upgraded first and then the servers can be upgraded.  See section 5.1 in the upgrade document.  http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35330/E35330.pdf
    Hope this helps. Russell

  • DB Import is very slow on ESX

    Hi All,
We are performing OS/DB migration from Sun/Oracle to Win/SQL server. Export took 9 hours when we perform import it is taking more than 25 hours and we are using ESX ( VMWARE), import system configuration is
    OS : Windows 2003
    DB : SQL Server
    8 CPUS
    32 GB RAM
1.5 TB HD ( for databases)
    500GB for log files 1
    500GB for log file 2
Importing is taking very slow and we are split export and import method.  Please help me reason for the slow performance and let know any specific configuration we have to use for sap on vmware specific to SQL Server DB.
    Regards,
    Kanthi.

    > - How big is your queued disk I/O? (use performance monitor to check)
This number indicates whether you have an I/O problem (using too many R3loads in parallel). If you want to trace down performance problems you should get familiar with the Windows tools, you may need that later during production also.
    > - How many parallel processes are you running?
    >
    >                       20
And you make sure using migration monitor that no packages of the same table are loaded simultaneously if you have split the talbles?
    > Network team is complaining about some ESX issues are experiencing, is this effect to the performance of the DB-Import.
I can't say since I don't know if you load the data from a network drive or locally or if the system loading the data into the database is local or remote.
I suggest you open an OSS call, they may have a look on the system and may give you some idea. Just from a description without having actual I/O key numbers it's impossible to give any hint where to look at to speed things up.

  • Solaris Cluster 3.3 on VMware ESX 4.1

    Hi there,
I am trying to setup Solaris Cluster 3.3 on Vmware ESX 4.1
My first question is: Is there anyone out there setted up Solaris Cluster on vmware accross boxes?
    My tools:
    Solaris 10 U9 x64
    Solaris Cluster 3.3
    Vmware ESX 4.1
    HP DL 380 G7
    HP P2000 Fibre Channel Storage
When I try to setup cluster, just next next next, it completes successfully. It reboots the second node first and then the itself.
After second node comes up on login screen, ping stops after 5 sec. Same either nodes!
I am trying to understand why it does that? I did every possibility to complete this job. Setted up quorum as RDM from VMware. Solaris has direct access to quorum disk now.
I am new to Solaris and I am having the errors below. If someone would like to help me it will be much appreciated!
Please explain me in more details i am new bee in solaris :) Thanks!
I need help especially on error: /proc fails to mount periodically during reboots.
Here is the error messages. Is there any one out there setted up Solaris Cluster on ESX 4.1 ?

    @TimRead
    Hi, thanks for reply,
I have already followed the steps also on your links but no joy on this.
What i noticed here is cluster seems to be buggy. Because i have tried to install cluster 3.3 on physical hardware and it gave me excat same error messages! interesting isnt it?
Please see errors below that I got from on top of VMware and also on Solaris Physical hardware installation:
    ERROR1:
Comment: I have installed different memories all the time. It keeps sayying that silly error.
problem_statement : *Node has insufficient physical memory.
<analysis>5120 MB of memory is installed on this node. The current release of Solaris Cluster requires a minimum of 1024 MB of physical memory in each node. Additional memory required for various Data Services.</analysis>
<recommendations>Add enough memory to this node to bring its physical memory up to the minimum required level.
    ERROR2
Comment: Despite rmt directory is there I gor error below on cluster check
    <problem_statement>The /dev/rmt directory is missing.
<analysis>The /dev/rmt directory is missing on this Solaris Cluster node. The current implementation of scdidadm(1M) relies on the existence of /dev/rmt to successfully execute 'scdidadm -r'. The /dev/rmt directory is created by Solaris regardless of the existence of the actual nderlying devices. The expectation is that the user will never delete this directory. During a reconfiguration reboot to add new disk devices, if /dev/rmt is missing scdidadm will not create the new devices and will exit with the following error: 'ERR in discover_paths : Cannot walk /dev/rmt' The absence of /dev/rmt might prevent a failover to this node and result in a cluster outage. See BugIDs 4368956 and 4783135 for more details.</analysis>
    ERROR3
Comment: All Nics have different MAC address though, also I have done what it suggests me. No joy here as well!
<problem_statement>Cluster node (3.1 or later) OpenBoot Prom (OBP) has local-mac-address? variable set to 'false'.
<analysis>The local-mac-address? variable must be set to 'true.' Proper operation of the public networks depends on each interface having a different MAC address.</analysis>
    <recommendations>Change the local-mac-address? variable to true: 1) From the OBP (ok> prompt): ok> setenv local-mac-address? true ok> reset 2) Or as root: # /usr/sbin/eeprom local-mac-address?=true # init 0 ok> reset</recommendations>
    ERROR4
Comment: No comment on this, i have done what it says no joy...
<problem_statement>/proc fails to mount periodically during reboots.
<analysis>Something is trying to access /proc before it is normally mounted during the boot process. This can cause /proc not to mount. If /proc isn't mounted, some Solaris Cluster daemons might fail on startup, which can cause the node to panic. The following lines were found:</analysis>
    Thanks!

  • Solaris won't boot after installation on ESX 3.5

    Hello everyone,
After installing last Solaris 10 x86 (download last iso from sun site) on a virtual machine on ESX 3.5 does not start at boot because it shuts down without displaying any errors.
Someone has done it? How to set up your vm?
I have already read these documents from Google but have not solved the problem

I'm having the EXACT same problem and have found little to help...
I too would like to use ZFS for a larger disk pool, but at this point I am thinking about loading Redhat instead.

  • Is ESX v3.0 / 3.5 vulnerable to Shellshock?

    Greetings,
Is ESX v3.0 / 3.5 vulnerable to Shellshock? - I have searched all over and cannot find this answer. I tried finding out the linux shell version as well, but did not locate that. I thought Google would answer this in 2 minutes
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rick

It should be as ESX 4 is vulnerable as well, with the difference being there is a patch available for ESX 4. I think the recommendation would be to upgrade to atleast ver 4 and apply the patch.
