ESX vmware

Does oracle support running databases (10g, 11g) on ESX VMWARE virtual machines?
Thank you,

You find this statement indirectly in the installation guides, which clearly show all supported environments.

  • Different CPU utilization on ESX VMware servers of Netweaver Portal

    Hello,
we are running an Enterprise Portal NW 7.0, SPS20. The application servers are running on 6 ESX VMware servers.
Although all application servers have almost the same amount of user sessions and the same processes on all servers,
always one of the servers have more than the double amount of CPU utilization than all other servers !
We found out, that this phänomen appears, as soon as one of the VM servers is running on a different physical hardware.
As soon as all servers are running on the same physical hardware, the problem does not exist.
Does anyone have experiences with the topic (Portal-)application servers on ESX VMware and different CPU utilization ?
    Best regards,
    Matthias

    Hi Matthias,
Here is some information that may help you analyze the situation further:

  • Is it possible to deliver captured traffic (span) to a server in ESX (VMware)?

    Hi Guys,
I have a request to capture traffic on the LAN and deliver it to a virtual server in a ESX VMware enviroment.
    Has anyone tried this?
    The topology is this:
    WAN--Gateway--LAN--6500s--portchannel---Server with ESX (virtual server)
Data coming from the WAN entering the LAN on a specific port, needs to be captured, and sent to a specific virtual server.
Do you think this is possible?
    Thanks.
    Adrian

If you put the ESX servers VMNIC port as destination it should be possible. You need to configure SPAN in Vmware though to send it to specific virtual machine. See if this link helps:

  • Oracle Database backup via ESX/VMWare

We are hoping to migrate our SAP systems to Virtual machines running 64bit Linux/Oracle.
We currently use Veritas Net Backup on our HPUX boxes for all our SAP backups, but as we  want to go the ESX route it would be nice to perform automated backups (and restores) at the physical server level.
What backup options are there for backing up SAP on a virtual machine?
Is there a backint connection between Oracle/SAP and Veritas Consolidated Backup?
    thanks,
    Stephen

    > We can backup the VMDK files after placing the database in backup mode, so a restore would be to recover this file (or files).  But I don't see how this can be automated.
Does that mean you want to put the Oracle database files into VMDK files and not on the raw device/LUN?

  • ESX/VMWare Switch Port Configuration

Does anyone know how to configure a 3560 switch port that is connecting to an ESX host with multiple VM's??

    Hi Jason,
Most of the time people will configure the port as a trunk to the ESX host.  So on the 3560 you can just do:
    switchport trunk encap dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
This will allow your VMs to be in different vlans if you would like.

  • DB Import is very slow on ESX

    Hi All,
We are performing OS/DB migration from Sun/Oracle to Win/SQL server. Export took 9 hours when we perform import it is taking more than 25 hours and we are using ESX ( VMWARE), import system configuration is
    OS : Windows 2003
    DB : SQL Server
    8 CPUS
    32 GB RAM
1.5 TB HD ( for databases)
    500GB for log files 1
    500GB for log file 2
Importing is taking very slow and we are split export and import method.  Please help me reason for the slow performance and let know any specific configuration we have to use for sap on vmware specific to SQL Server DB.
    Regards,
    Kanthi.

    > - How big is your queued disk I/O? (use performance monitor to check)
This number indicates whether you have an I/O problem (using too many R3loads in parallel). If you want to trace down performance problems you should get familiar with the Windows tools, you may need that later during production also.
    > - How many parallel processes are you running?
    >
    >                       20
And you make sure using migration monitor that no packages of the same table are loaded simultaneously if you have split the talbles?
    > Network team is complaining about some ESX issues are experiencing, is this effect to the performance of the DB-Import.
I can't say since I don't know if you load the data from a network drive or locally or if the system loading the data into the database is local or remote.
I suggest you open an OSS call, they may have a look on the system and may give you some idea. Just from a description without having actual I/O key numbers it's impossible to give any hint where to look at to speed things up.

  • Server Manager fails to load with the error "A device attached to the system is not functioning"

I'm at a dead end on this.  I can't find anything online that involves this error and the Server Manager and I cannot find anything in the event viewer being generated from this error.

I am constantly seeing this error at multiple sites on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Standard and DataCenter.
I have counted over 50 different server I manage with services such as   domain controller, hyper-v, file servers, exchange 2013, SQL 2008/2012, and print servers.
I have seen it happen on machine that have been in production for over 2 years and to machines that were just created last week.
It is happening on metal, hyper-v and esx vmware servers.
It is happening when the machine have updates waiting or no updates, or after updates have been applied and awaiting a restart.
It is happening on Dell PowerEdge server, HP Proliant servers and IBM servers.
It is happening on servers with Intel and AMD chip-sets.
It is happening on machines that are a part of a domain or in a workgroup.
It is happening on machines with AV of Bitdefendor, Trend Micro, Vipre, Microsoft Endpoint, and Symantec Endpoint.
Only a restart will fix it.
I have ran process monitor on several of the problem machines and I cannot find anything.
Since I have only started seeing this about 6 month ago it must be a Windows update causing it.

  • Access share on NSS4000 with error: A device attached to the system is not functioning

    Hello,
We use Acronis True Image Server to backup 4 Windows 2008 Standard Server system
with 2 different domains, each containing a DC and a RDP-Server.
After Server reboot, backup will run only once a day.
The next day backup aborts, and while trying to access
the network share like \\ip-address\share, as configured in Acronis
I get the error message: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
On the other hand, I can ping the NSS4000 and access share by using the
network (netbios) name instead of the ip.
This will work only for one day, also.
Now, if I try to access the share on the NSS4000 again by ip,
I get the error code 0x80070043 The networkname can not be found.
Ping on ip and netbiosname works.
Share access from one server to an other is not affected and full funtional at all times.
On the first sight I thought, that there it might be with the authentication protocol NTLMV2.
So I configured the GP to send only NTLM Authentication only, without fixing the problem.
    Fyi:
    I use a NSS4000, Firmware version 1.16-3
The NSS4000 is not a member in neither domains.
I created a dummy user account on each domain, an created a local user on the NSS4000 related
to the dummy user account on each domain.
A good answer helping me to fix with this issue, would be great.

  • Building a small network with Windows 7 machines

This isn't necessarily Premiere or even video-related, but hopefully some of you hardware/networkin gurus can offer a bit of advice...
I've been using my ISP's rather cob-job DSL/hub/WAP for awhile, with my two workstations cabled to it, and my laptop accessing it wirelessly. I frequently push files between the systems, but, since the hub is only 100Mbit ethernet, and the WAP is 11g, shoving large files around is an exercise in mind-numbing patience. On the software side, I just click a bunch of buttons until the various systems show up as accessible on the others--I really have no idea what I'm doing in this regard.
I've got a GigE switch on the way, with enough Cat6 cable to connect all the computers directly to the switch, and then to the DSL modem, so at least the networking between my systems will be far faster. However, I'm still in the dark as to the best way to actually establish the network on the software side of things. How should I set up shares between the systems? I don't have a NAS yet--that'll be a later investment--so I need to be able to drop files from System #1 on System #3, etc. I've tinkered around with the Windows 7 "HomeGroup" funtionality, but that seems like it's more designed to easily set up swapping of music and documents and things like that.
Another consideration is that my laptop usually goes with me to various remote locations, where I either plug in to a cabled network, or access it wirelessly. How can I maintain some semblance of security, both at home and in the field, without unnecessarily hobbling the connection?
I appreciate any insight and advice you guys might have. Thanks!

    Colin,
I have three servers, 01 and 02 and an ESX server. Two run plain vanilla Win2008 Server, the last one runs ESX/VMWare and Win2008 Server. They are physically miles apart but connected over a VPN. All local machines are either cable connected with Gb Netgear unmanaged or HP managed switches and the routers at both sides are Draytek Vigor 2820 Vn ADSL2+ modems or they are wirelessly connected over 801.11n.
Some local machines are part of a domain, others are not.  Whenever one starts a machine, they are automatically logged in, using a vbs script, and the networked drives are automatically connected. Some of these drives are local, others are over the VPN connection.
This gives me the following drives on my video machine:
but gives me the same networked drives on all other machines.
One thing to note, drive K, named 'harm' contains My Documents. This is automatically synchronized with my notebook, so I can access all of My Documents when I work off-line and they are automatically synchronized when I get back on-line on the network. The same applies to my wifes My Documents and my daughter's and my son's files, all using active directory.
Furthermore all networked drives are backed-up daily over the VPN to a NAS. To add to that, my daughter in Switzerland can connect to the servers here over a VPN so she can access our files here.
The only thing you do not yet have is a dedicated server running Win Server 2008 and possibly Exchange Server 2010. That would make your life a bit easier. For example, I only have Office on my notebook, but sometimes need to check my mail on my video machine. Using Exchange Server and OWA (Outlook Web Access) I can easily consult my mail on my video machine, send, reply or forward without having Outlook installed.
Check your PM for a graphical representation of my network.
Sharing with two PC's on the same switch seems like the most down-to-earth approach that will do what you need initially. Forgive me for not remembering all the gory details, but this network here has been in operation for over 5 years now and is a bit beyond what you want to achieve now. Just set sharing and it should work.
If you have difficulties, let me know and I will ask my son (MCITP, MCSE, MCSA, MCP, MCDP, etc.) what your best approach is.

  • Crystal Reports Server 2008 - Jobserver fails!

    Hi,
I've just installed Crystal Reports Server 2008 V1. With the server specs listed below:
    ESX VMWare Server
    OS: Windows Server 2003
    RAM: 4GB
    DISK: 20GB FREE
I've since started scheduling reports and setting up of the user profiles/access levels.
The scheduling of reports worked fine for the first 2-3 days. After that, it seems as though the job server just dies/stops scheduling. Any other instances that are run manually will be stucked with the status "Pending".
Only after rebooting the Jobserver, will the 'stuck' jobs be processed. This is getting kind of irritating and unacceptable. Anyone has any solutions to this issue that i am facing ?.
    Really appreciate any help!

Hardware resources were NEVER an issue.  We have quad core boxes with 2 processors, no other reporting requests just sitting idle and we see this.  We now installed SP3 for XI 3.1 and still occasionally seeing it.  RAM
We found that if the CMS or the Job server are restarted (we tested this with CR, Webi, Deski) all use the same code to process jobs so it makes sense.
SAP told me to add the -type outproc on ALL job servers.  I tried this, I haven't had pending jobs yet on XI 3.1, but doesn't mean it doesn't happen anymore.  We only randomly saw this due to our activity on the boxes.
It's one main pressing point for us to move to XI 3.1 Sp3.
By adding this switch we were told it won't re-use any jobserverchild.exe's.  It will only create and close new ones used for the request.
We saw our pre-spawned go way down, so it looks like it doesn't pre-spawn any after putting this switch in the command line of the job server.
I still have a case open on this issue.  I am waiting for it to appear it's head.
We noticed that it wasn't just Crystal, but all jobs pended.  So I suspect what's happening is that something is losing connectivity, yet when I looked at the DB - it was saying active and running just like what we were seeing.
If we restart the CMS OR the job servers, either way they worked after that.  I didn't have to do both so that seems like something is losing connectivity to the CMS.
One might say the one point of failure might be the CMS...since all other job servers are having issues.  However, all on demand jobs were running fine, even against samples.
So it's a weird issue.  I traced as well and no one at SAP could see anything.  As soon as I restarted the problem went away so hard to trace unless I let it trace for days.

  • Conversion from physical to virtual server

Our server technology group wants to convert our physical

    Hello Nelson,
There are quite lot of things in TMG which are dependent on Hardware.
If you want to migrate from physical to virtual server, you can follow the steps here which are recommended/supported way of doing it.
Though this article is for ISA to TMG migration, still you can follow the same steps for Physcial to Virtual migration.

  • CIsco ISE - HP Openview monitoring.

    Hi guys,
I have a doubt about monitoring Cisco ISE services in the network.
We can send some alarms notifications to a multiple e-mails, but my doubt is if I can monitoring ISE services with a network monitoring software like HP Open View.
I didn't find any documentation about it yet.
Someone knows if I can do this?

    Hi Tarik, How are you?
The doubt is.... my customer have ise in vmware and he need monitoring availability for cisco ISE. The question is: How can I do that? I did found any document informing if I can send snmp traps or something like that to a Monitoring Server.
About "link down" and "link Up" he can monitoring the ESX Vmware appliance right?
There are something that I can do with Cisco ISE. I need to pass a answer to my client if  the Cisco ISE can support this kind of configuration.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Converting my server into an AVCHD Workstation

    Hi all,
I built a server a while back (February 2009) to run VMware on and mess around with virtual machines.  I no longer have the need for this, so I decided to turn this server into a video editing workstation.  Here is what the server consists of:
    Motherboard:
    ASUS DSEB-D16/SAS Dual LGA 771 Intel 5400
    CPU:
    Intel Xeon E5410 Harpertown 2.33GHz LGA 771 80W
    RAM:
    8GB A-DATA  240-Pin DDR2 FB-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) ECC Fully Buffered
    OS Drive / Premier:
Fujitsu MBA3300 MBA3147RC 147GB 15000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)
    Media Drives:
2x Samsung 750GB  (not in any RAID config at the moment)
    Video:
    Nvidia 8800 GTS 512MB
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on the system and it seems to work nicely.  I don't really care for the motherboard anymore, but until I can actually afford a better system (Supermicro MBD-X8DA3-O with 2 Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem 2.26GHz LGA 1366 80W) I will have to make my current system work.
I haven't done any editing yet with the system, just playback of the MTS files in Premier, and it does seem choppy.  Is there anyway I can improve performance with my current system?  I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on another processor if I'm going to be moving to a different mobo soon.  Is my RAM slowing me down?
    Thank you all in advance.
    Matt

    Matthew,
Just yesterday my son bought a new Dell T410 PowerEdge with dual E5520's, 12 GB 1333 RAM and a PERC raid controller for use as a server with ESX/VMWare/Hyper-V and the like, as a test system. Somewhat comparable to what you have used your system for.
Today, after he had ordered, he expressed his doubts about the speed and performance of this system in comparison to mine, which is solely used for video editing. He wondered if he had not bought a sub-par system for a relatively hefty price-tag.
I'm convinced he made the right decision for his budget and his purpose (virtualization and testing as a server), but not for video editing. Even dual E5520's are left in the dust by a finely tuned i7-920 for a much lower price. Look at this benchmark score: http://www.passmark.com/baselines/top.html
and you will notice that even dual W5580's with rank 11 and 19 have trouble keeping up with finely tuned i7's. At different clock speeds my personal scores are 1, 10 and 18.
You will undoubtedly profit in a significant way from adding a second CPU to your system, but first try the PPBM benchmark to see where you are. That will give much more accurate info on how your current system performs and what your next steps should be.
