ESXi 5.x on W530 - Possible !?

Hey Guys ~!
This is my first thread in here and became an owner of W530 few days ago.
Basically, I am a system enginner which needs to consume lots of VM for testing and therefore bought this powerful machine so that I can test on different things.
I am supposed to have lots of challenges on running ESXi on bare metal. I was successful in tackling the ethernet driver issue. However, I got no clue why ESXi did not find my disks on W530. No matter I used AHCI or Compatability mode, it still fails to scan any drive
Is any one having the same issue as mine also ?
Having VM Workstation on Windows is a workaround to me, but I do not want to waste my memory and processing power on Windows service.  Nested VM is another consideration if I want to use ESXi, however, I believe the performance will be degraded.
Nice to meet you guyz amd  I do find that this community knowledge looks quite up to date.

If you need to ask why, because the workstation is to be shared with other people.
Who cares a virutal desktop management GUI ?  vSphere client will have it
If ESXi , all other people can use vSphere client to setup VMs at the same time. I do not have the RAID enabled, but two harddisks has been installed
Workstation 9 seems support some of the features, but I just cannot find anything working right now

  • Install of CUCM 8.6.1.10000-43 on VMWare fails on installing progmeter

    Hi, Everyone
First time post here, and first time installing CUCM (any version).
I built a VM using a downloaded OVA template for CUCM 6.5.1.10000-43, and the install fails with a critical stop.  Once I figured out how to dump logs to the virtual serial port, and looked at the install.log, I found the following information that looks like where the install failed (these are the only LVL::Error and LVL::Critical messages in the log).
It looks like install failed to install the progmeter application component.
Does anyone know what this app does?  Any ideas on why it might have failed to install and possible workaround?
I may already have the answer to the question, as I'm attempting install on a VM running on VMWare vServer (rather than ESX/ESXi/vSphere).  It is possible that simply being on an unsupported configuration is my problem.  I'm trying to work with the equipment immediately available to me, but fully understand that I may have set myself up for failure by even attempting this.
    Any help is appreciated greatly.
    Regards,
    Sean C

    Hi,
Has anyone found a fix for this?
I am trying to run call manager 8.6.1 on the following enviroment
    VMware ESXI 4.1
    4GB of RAM
    80 GB HDD Space
I have allocated the VM one CPU
In regards to vsergeyey reponse I have checked the network adapter and this is flexible.
I have run the OVA template firstly before mounting the image
I have tried installing numerous times.
    Each and every time near the "Installing Database Component" I get the following error;

  • UCCX 8.5(1) media fails

    Hi,
I'm having a customer where I have to install UCCX 8.5.
The first media I got, fails at the media check in the beginning. If I then just ignore the media check and goes directly to the install, then it stops with an error like the one below.
It pops up with a couble of error like that, before restarting and uttley fails. Bad media I thought, and got on the job of getting a new one.
Today I then got my NFR kit, which contains an UCCX 8.5 media. Lets try that one the I thought. Same excact error. Fails both media check and an install if I ignore the media check. I have used the Virtual machine templates for the install on the ESXi server.
Is it possible to have gotten 2 bad dvd's, or is there perhaps something in the install procedure that I have missed. It should be straing forward. Import the ova, attach the dvd to the vm and boot. Punch in ip addresses etc etc.
Anybody else that have gotten some bad medias?
    / Kim

    Eureka.
I decided to start all over. And this time I choosed the smallest ova. The one for only 100 agents. I didn't need more, but had just used the larger ones, to be sure that I didn't run into problems i the future. There was plenty space on the server.
One of the reasons that I stated over, was because I could see that the errors were about partitions. So perhaps ther was something wrong with virtual harddrives.
When I imported the ova, I noticed that the one for 100 agents only had 1 harddrive compared to the other I had used, that had 2 hd's. And I think that it was what gave me problems. Because now that I try the install, without running the media check, it suddently runs smootly.
So if you have problems with the install media, and have used a ova that gives you 2 harddrives, then try the smaller one that gives you only 1 hd.
If you need more than 100 agents, then you could perhaps just try to expand the single hd, rthat the 100 agents ova sets up.
It could also be that I just made another setup error, that I didn't noticed.
Now there's only to wait for the install to finish, so that I can get on with the fun stuff.
    /Kim

  • ACI - APIC installation

    Hi,
Anyone has tried to install APIC software within ESXi before? Is it possible to virtualized APIC controller?
My company recently purchased an ACI lab with N9K switches, but no APIC. I managed to find a UCS C220 M3 server and had intention to build APIC cluster within it.
    Your advises are much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Alex

There is an ACI simulator available. See this post for details:

  • W530 Color Sensor adding possible?

I've bought a couple of weeks ago the W530 2438CTO, Full-HD, K2000M, Core I5-3320M, 8GB RAM without Color Sensor and no Fingerprint Reader. And I wonder why it was and still is impossible to order the W530 Core I5-3320M with Color Sensor, though the Palmrest has the hole for the sensor. That's really interesting, because the screen shows a much too high red level, which burns the eyes. And so far I understand, it's a common problem with that screen, according to the statements in the forum.
Now my question, does anyone know if it's possible to order and add the Color Sensor on my own - I'm a technician and know how to maintain Laptops. And if it's possible, does the Color Sensor calibrate the way to high red level of the screen to a normal color level?
    I found a list of FRU: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/W530_FRU_BOM_v2.pdf
Thanks to everyone for ya help :-)

  • Hi there, Is it possible to install ESXi 5.5 on a PC i5 3770K with windows 7, 64bits and motherboard asus Z77 ?

Is it possible to install ESXi 5.5 on a PC I5 3770K with windows 7, 64bits and motherboard asus Z77 ?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    Here's the follow up:
I took a chance and installed MAC OS X 10.4.9 COMBO and QT 7.1.6 update, installed FCS 2 suite and my old TRV 340 still works perfectly.
I erased livetype included with FCE HD as suggested by apple tech note, and the installing process worked like a charm.
I keep my version of FCE HD 3.5.1 and original soundtrack . Both applications work well side by side with FCP 6.
    Great.

  • Possible issues installing ESXi 5.0.0 on a B22 M3

I have booted from the esx disk and in the process of installing the software. It's asked me for the root password and when it goes to do the system Scan I get this error
<VALIDATE_HOST_HW ERROR: Vendor VIB for Hewlett-Packard Company found, but host is Cisco Systems Inc>
I've checked the compatibility matrix and I should be able to make this into a exsi 5.0.0 host, has anyone seen this?
I'm not sure if I read the matirx wrong .. or what.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    BR

Which ISO are you using?  We would expect using the Cisco OEM image

  • OSX running on ESXI 5.5/6.0 on non apple hardware, possible ?

    Hi,
I noticed the other day that both ESXI 5.5 and 6.0 support OSX, however it doesn't mention if ESXI needs to be running on Apple hardware.
    I'm assuming Yes..  Anybody ?

    Hi,
Ok thanks for the information on the licensing and good to know.
So should I be able to boot of an OSX disk then, as when I have tried I see the Apple logo and then it shuts down
    Thanks

  • Memory on ESXI 5.1

    Dear All,
my Lab ESXI has 16GB memory and I7 Processor, however i run out of memory and my MOBO doesnt support more than 16GB,
i was thinking to buy SSD HDD to use it as memory,
is this possibly on ESXI ? if yes how can i configure it ?
    thank you

You could buy an SSD and use it as cache/page file. ESXi Host > Configuration > Under Software, Host Cache Configuration.
    Here's a good article to read: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/08/18/swap-to-host-cache-aka-swap-to-ssd/

  • Questions on the W530

    Hey Everyone,
I am a college student who is looking to buy a new laptop in the coming weeks, and have made the W530 my top choice. For now I plan to use it for everyday tasks and entertainment, but eventually I'll use it for coding with matlab as well as Microsoft visual studios and possibly some programs for 3D printing. I plan on getting the base options that it comes with but I am having trouble deciding on the screen. I planned on getting the 1600x900 screen but I'd like to know how it differs from the 1920x1080 FHD screen. Is the difference noticeable or should I be fine with just the 1600X900 screen? If I were to get the FHD screen is it possible to install a blu-ray player later on, or is that out of the question since Lenovo does not offer that as an option. And last question, how reliable are the recent W530's as I've seen many posts about problems in the W530 that seem to only effect the ones from early 2012?
Any help on these questions would be extremely appreciated
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. The HD+ 1600x900 screen on W530 is of good quality. The FHD 1920x1080 screen on W530 is of excellent quality. Choosing which one is really a matter of personal preference and needs, although it is obvious that the FHD provides a larger working area.
    2. Installing a Blu-ray drive (to replace the stock DVD drive) is separate from the FHD screen option and can be done by yourself. Check this:
    http://www.primitivebuteffective.com/2011/05/lenovo-w520-for-sony-vegas-pro-10-and_23.html
    3. In general, the W530 is a great (relatively portable) workstation.

  • Lenovo W530 - Stuck at "Loading initial ramdisk" GRUB Discrete graphic

As in the thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146006 (only that I do not have any encryption on my drive) I cannot get my ThinkPad W530 booting (I have installed via EFI) with Discrete graphics mode (set in BIOS). NVIDIA Optimus works with optirun and Integrated graphics works fine but I cannot start with Discrete graphics.
I want to do this since I cannot connect an external monitor to my computer at all right now (the Mini DisplayPort and VGA adapter are only physically connected to the NVIDIA card). I have tried following several more or less incomplete guides on how to start a second X server with bumblebee but I cannot get those working and do not see two X servers a a good solution. I want a virtual display that spans over two monitors. I tried booting the computer with an Ubuntu Live USB stick and it automatically connected and used both monitors (when I set Discrete graphics in the BIOS) even in the installation process, and I can run games like StarCraft II just fine on my Arch install with optirun (when I set NVIDIA Optimus in the BIOS) so the hardware seems to work just fine.
When I boot the regular Arch linux kernel (3.17.1-1-ARCH) with Discrete graphics I get to the message "Loading initial ramdisk...", then the screen turns black. My system is using GDM for login and Gnome as window manager.
I managed to login blindly (not sure if it was through GDM or Ctrl + Alt + F2 since I tried both) during the black screen and execute a command that I later found in my .zsh_history file and I also can see that the drive access led is blinking a while after the black screen so it seems that the system has not hanged entirely. If I disable GDM the screen does not turn black but freezes at the "Loading initial ramdisk..." output.
My /boot/grub/grub.cfg file is (I am not trying to boot with the linux-ck or linux-rt kernel that I also have installed):

  • Possible to upgrade x131e screen to HD+?

I knwo from experience that ThinkPads are generally easy to work on, I've got a T510, a W530 and a little x131e on the way...
I've read on a few forums and seen pictures proving that people had upgraded their E-series and other ThinkPads that came with 1366x768 screens to 1920x1080 pretty easily. Simply replacing the screen with a higher resolution one.
What I am wondering is, would it be possible to replace the 11.6" 1366x768 screen on my x131e with an 11.6" 1600x900 screen?  I realize Lenovo doesn't sell this model with that resolution, so I assume I would have to find an 11.6" screen of that resolution for another Lenovo model, or possibly an entirely different laptop.
I'll be perfectly happy with my x131e even if I can't do this, I'm just wonder, is it a pipe dream that would be a complex project, or is it feasible that I could simply find an LCD panel of that size and resolution and drop it in.
I'm comfortable disassembling laptops and replacing parts, I've done it successfully several times before. The area where I'm unsure is how much differentiation is there between laptops screen designs and do things like drivers matter?  In other words, are most 11.6" screens or 15.6" screens more or less the same design, as it they'll fit in most laptops of that size and the ribbon cables and other bits will be in the right places?  Or are there wide variations in design so that you need to find the right part for the model in most cases, or something very similar.
Thanks in advance if you read all that and take the time to respond.

I think it will be a complex project. While it's quite easy to replace the HD screens with FHD panels on the T/W5x0 generations, I don't think it will be so easy to do what you want for the X131e. First you need to find a 1600x900 11.6" panel at all, then if one is available, the cable needs to be compatible as well, have the same pin definition and so on...

  • No access to BIOS on W530 after W7 64bit installation | W7 boots and works fine

    Hello L'users
My fancy problem with my W530 DOS machine 2441-B32. Age: 2 weeks.
Bios was current (1.11) when I started installing W7 64bit. Before installation, I changed the BIOS setting to UEFI.
OS Installation seems to be fine, no error messages from the OS or ThinkVantage so far.
Funny is that I cannot access the BIOS any more.
    Here comes the plot.
First message for about 5 seconds during boot procedure is:
"To interrupt normal startup, press Enter"
Problem: Pressing Enter does not interrupt the "normal" startup.
Second message for about a second is:
    System BIOS shadowed
    Video BIOS shadowed
    BIOS Version: G5ET33W (1.11 )
    Press <F1> to BIOS Setup.
    Problems:
Pressing F1 does not lead to setup.
I did not manually shadow anything.
BIOS was not secured from me with a pwd.
Third message for about half a second is:
ThinkVantage Active Protection sensor diagnostics start. /
The fourth message is the start message from a booting W7.
    What I have tried:
    (1)
    BIOS Update Utility
    g5uj07us.exe
    Executed under W7 says
BIOS image file is same as BIOS ROM
An update is not necessary at this time.
So it seems that the BIOS is accessible by this utility.
    (2)
Starting from the DVD-ROM is not possible, I tried to boot from the DOS bootable BIOS FLASH CD, an OpenSuse DVD, DBAN.
I was thinking about erasing the HDD in an external USB docking, booting the W530 from the DOS bootable BIOS FLASH CD without a HDD installed, restoring the BIOS and trying another W7 install.
But: This is nearly the same what I did when I installed W7 the first time.
Any ideas? Does anybody here had the same problem?
    Thanx!
    Kottan

  • W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

I Just got my W530 3720QM K2000m and i find it ridiculous that it cant use the 90W Adapter when idle and uses the battery. I Read threads of similar things with the W520, as well as some on the W510, and it appears that this used to work on the W510, 90W power adapter delivered the system in working condition with reduced performance. Now, i use my laptop as both a worstation and an entertainment laptop. if i were to go on a flight or be in a car, i sure wont be doing intensive VMware or 3d stuff, so 90W would be more than sufficient to drive the laptop as well as charge the laptop. i even have a Killawatt meter, i plugged in the 170W Adapter into it, and then ran my laptop while having the battery charged. the max power consumption that it pulled was 70W At the wall, surfing the web in optimus mode. Why cant we have a power saver mode to allow usage of the 90W adapter? or at least have the Choice between "battery only" - reduced performance anyways and "reduced performance AC/only"? At the very least it would avoid draining the battery for absolutely no good reason. My system idles at under 30watts anyways and that would leave 60W to do anything else, for example charging the battery at 40W - to give the total of 70W at the wall, from the 170W Brick. i Wish to see a revised bios to correct this or at least allow this. i dont believe its impossible or too complex to code. it was done on the W510, i dont see why it cant be done on newer, improved, smarter, more power controlled, 22nm ivy bridge based systems. and yes, if i wanted to use the full power of my machine i would have the 170W adapter, however, i currently own a T60, T61, T400 and now just added a W530, so i already have two docks + 4 90W adapters, + a 90W AC/DC Travel adapter. having to purchase another 170W adapter is kinda ridiculous, not to mention that its not compatible with any of my three other machines due to the fact that it is keyed. Please make a bios revision to address this issue. Thanks.

given my tests were done on a W530, i shall post my results here.
Bottom line: Lenovo power manager has no freaking clue as to how much power the system actually uses when its plugged into the wall. it cant even do basic arithmetic.
In any case, these are my findings. on the W530, with a i7 3720 QM, 32gb of 1600mhz ram, K2000m, these are my results on power consumption.
These tests were done to see if there was a logical explanation for not allowing the use of a 90W adapter at all on such a machine. bottom line is, if throtled, there is no reason not to. limiting the use to intel gpu only and not allowing turbo boost, effectively eliminates ANY possibility of using more than 90W when not charging the battery. The proof: The last two lines of this table. 60W Max power consumption at the wall under OCCT PSU Test when the cpu is limited to 2.6ghz, and the battery is removed/not charging. PSU Test stresses both cpu and gpu simultaneously.
The first battery of tests were to find out what tests should and shouldnt be performed, and what numbers were accurate. it was clear that power manager had no idea how to do basic math and later tests did not include it's random numbers. it only properly aproximates power consumption when on battery, not when on AC.
It was also concluded that using OCCT:CPU Resulted in the same power draw as CPU: Linpack, and thus OCCT CPU Was used to expedite number crunching.
