/etc/hosts wiped out by installation of Leopard
Why is the /etc/hosts file deleted by installing Leopard?
Why do you have to be root to access this file even if you are Admin?
None of this happened with Tiger.
Dan456 wrote:
My /etc/hosts file is rw-r--r-- root wheel so authentication is needed to write to it. I'd imagine the authentication is required so that trojan horse programs find it harder to perform DNS hijackings.
It may have been re-written on installing Leopard to get it into a known good state. If you edit it again your changes will probably stay.
Welcome to the Apple boards:
The OP indicated he could not access the file at all. Yes, writing has always required admin permissions (sudo or su) but the file can be accessed in a read-only mode.
Since I update my hosts file off and on, I always keep a backup and if the file ever does get trashed, I simply use my backup as I indicated.
My hosts reads:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 434538 Aug 24 2007 hosts
and that proves that Leopard did not overwrite it. Leopard did not come out until October.
So the OP has a separate problem. Leopard does not touch the existing hosts file.

No backup at all? Were you not even running protect? How about sync'ing with a computer or with the cloud?
If you really don't have any form of backup and did not sync with Outlook, Google, or something, nor sync music and pictures with a computer, then whatever you had on device memory is gone. If you were using a media card then you may have that, unless it got wiped in the process.

Editing etc\hosts file on windows xp for apps. problem post installation.
Hi all,
I was able to install 11.5.10.2 apps on my win xp prof machine. During that process I had to edit the etc/hosts file in windows directory as a work around for that domain name field during installation. Also added the primary DNS suffix as 'suneel.com' . I gave the domain name as 'suneel.com' during installation. The RapidWiz is taking localhost as the system name and referring to this system as localhost.suneel.com, though the actual system name is 'websoft-xp' .
The host file on Apps machine has the following entries:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost.suneel.com suneel.com
127.0.0.1 websoft-xp.suneel.com
So when I connect to apps login server from other systems in lan, I've to edit their hosts file and add an entry for localhost.suneel.com to point to its ip address or else the apps throws an error after logging in as operations/welcome using a different url say 192.168.1.4:8000 . Is there a way to get around this issue?
More over I'm not able connect to VIS db from other systems. The oracle clients give an error 'No listner' at this address. (The original listener was listening at localhost.suneel.com:1521). So I tried to create a new listerner from Net Manager that actually listens at websoft-xp (the real system name) but it throws me an error 'A valid log file is required' while saving the network configuration and prevents me from saving the network configuration.
Did I do something wrong with the hosts file during installation or did i miss any entries in that file thats causing this? Any solutions for the above problems will be appreciated?
Thanks
Suneel

suneelgvWell I tried that option but for some reason it didn't work for me. It kept giving the tns:connection closed error. Then I searched in metalink and found this note : Note:333158.1
It suggested setting tcp.validnode_checking = no
in sqlnet.ora. in
F:\oracle\visdb\9.2.0\network\admin\VIS_websoft-xp
And it works. Hope this helps someone facing a similar problem. Good luck.
BTW how do I run autoconfig?
Thanks,

Hi,
Pls confirm if you are using Windows 2000 Pro, in this O/S the
hostname is the name of the computer itself. Check the
MyComputer->Properties->Network Identification->Properties, the name you
find under the computer name will be automatically taken while
installation, if it doesn't then there is some error. However the
C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts doesn't matter much while installing
iAS 6.0 SP1 or above. Hope this helps

All of the pictures, music, emails, etc has been wiped out in all of our applications. The only thing that wasn't wiped out was our documents. When you click on the applications it goes to what it looks like when you are first setting up your computer. After that, everything is gone. The only thing different we have done with our computer was update Safari. Any idea what happened?
Bee may be onto something. Losing the home folder has been known to happen spontaneously. These are directions if this has been done deliberately, but which you might want to use to troubleshoot your situation. It may be worth a try.

Leopard: /etc/hosts is ALWAYS ignored
Hi all. I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere on the net. Can anyone tell me why, in Leopard, my /etc/hosts file would be completely ignored. It doesn't matter what I put in it, it seems to never be read. I've tried using dnscacheutil to empty the cache and all that. Nothing seems to help. And I can't find anywhere how I can tell Leopard the order in which to try hostname lookups (hosts first, then DNS). Any ideas?
Thanks
--Dancan you post your /etc/hosts file, or a subset (maybe replace IP addresses with nn.nn.nn.nn).
If you use
file /etc/hosts
do you see
/etc/hosts: ASCII English text
or
/etc/hosts: ASCII text, with CR line terminators
or
/etc/hosts: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators
Have you tried to install and/or run your own DNS server on your Mac? -
Oracle R12 installation successful after changing /etc/hosts
changing the localhost line
from
192.168.25.105 localhost.localdomain localhost
to
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
then installation is successfull!!!!
why is that?
ThanksHi;
192.168.25.105 localhost.localdomain localhost
to
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhostWhat is your server IP? Your /etc/hosts file should be like
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.xx.xx hostname.localdomain hostname
It already cover on installation guide

/etc/hosts in Snow Leopard: ping works, browsers don't?
I've had success in the past using /etc/hosts to direct web browsers to a test server instead of the production server, but it's not working in OS X 10.6.7.
I edit the hosts file:
$ sudo vi /etc/hosts
Add my entry:
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
127.0.0.1 localhost dev.localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
111.111.111.111 server.com
Flush the cache:
$ dscacheutil -flushcache
Test with ping:
PING server.com (111.111.111.111): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 111.111.111.111: icmp_seq=0 ttl=46 time=220.423 ms
64 bytes from 111.111.111.111: icmp_seq=1 ttl=46 time=242.509 ms
All seems good, but when I load http://server.com in a browser (safari, firefox, chrome), I get the production server and not 111.111.111.111. What did I miss?Yep, thank you. It's not my server and is coughing up responses that somehow eventually kick me back over to the production content.
I don't expect further help (I probably won't pursue it further myself), but just for grins here's an example telnet request:
$ telnet server.com 80
Trying 111.111.111.111...

Definitely not what I expect. Another request for /cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi just gives a 404 page. Maybe the browser tries a real DNS lookup at that point. -
Help: Word 2004/Mac wiped out all my customized commands, etc.!
I opened Word 2004 for Mac (Version 11.2) on my G4 15" Powerbook this morning and discovered that it had reverted to its factory install settings and wiped out all my preferences, toolbar customizations, and (many, many) customized keyboard commands.
Neither my Entourage settings nor my Styles have been affected, so the problem seems to be with preferences, toolbar, and keyboard settings only, and not with Office 2004 for Mac or Mac OS 10.3.9. This seems to have happened spontaneously, because everything was working normally when I shut down my computer last night.
I have a copy of my most recent keyboard settings, though not toolbars and preferences, but restoring everything will be extremely time-consuming, and since I'm on a deadline, I'm very ticked off! Can anyone tell me (1) Why this happened, (2) If there's any way to restore all my stuff without doing it all from scratch?; (3) How to prevent this happening again?
Oh, and one more aggravating thing: (4) The Word "Help" window is now so big that the lower right corner no longer shows on the screen of my laptop, and even when I click the green button to minimize the screen, I can't get at that corner to reduce the size of the window. Anyone know how to make the Help window (much) smaller?
Many thanks for any suggestions or information!Hi, Turtlewiz. Always remember, each time Word kicks you in the teeth, that it's not a bug, it's a feature! Word may temporarily have forgotten that it knows what you want much better than you do, and allowed you to choose some settings and create some customizations yourself. Now that Word has regained its senses, all that silliness is over and you're back at its mercy again. In other words, the situation is normal, as most Word users can attest.
The remedy is to use a different word processor — one that lets you be in charge, instead of dictating the terms of your capitulation at the most inopportune of times. -
I have apparently wiped out my iPhone 4 contacts list, my apps, and my photos when I synced with iTunes. Maybe I clicked the wrong button, but I just wanted to download the photos from my phone to my computer. Is there any way to restore my previous information?
Did you sync to itunes from a different computer than the one you normally sync to?
syncing to itunes doesn't just wipe out all your data.
If you have a backup of your phone you can restore to that backup. -
Trying to figure out how this got into my /etc/hosts file!
Hello,
I recently upgraded to 4.3.3 and since then I've had problems with "No Service" where my AT&T service indicator usually sits.
Since I know that they're just going to restore my device when I take it to the apple store, I decied to start the process myself.
I tried several times but got the "iphone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."
Checked around and found that my /etc/hosts file on my mbp had been altered and now included the following:
# Below is to bypass Apple iPhone software
# signature server. For unlocking iPhone
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
I have no idea how this got there! And I am concerned. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps from some Mac app I downloaded?
Thanks.1. Click your Finder icon from your dock.
2. Choose "Go" from your top menu and choose "Go To Folder"
3. Type "/etc/" and then click "go"
4. Delete the "hosts" file and reboot the system.
The hosts file will repopulate from system defaults during the reboot process.

Has My External Drive Been Wiped Out?
So I have a Western Digital external hard drive that I bought in anticipation of the Leopard release in October, 2007. And it's generally worked well, until now. After being away for a few days, I turned on my iMac and the external didn't pop up. So I unplugged it and plugged it in again and after doing this, nothing came up.
Finally, a message comes up, hours later saying that the disk couldn't be initialized and the like and Disk Utility pops up. And on Disk Utility, my external is popped up... yet it shows it has the full amount of space available and that it isn't formatted.
Keep in mind that I'm a musician, I record, produce and actually put all of those files on the external to prevent myself hassle and heartache from the iMac's drive going out.
But now that this has happened... has my external wiped out? You have no idea how much I am praying to hear the words: "No."
Thanks!First thing to do is reset the USB chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes powering the ports to do stuff like detect when a device is plugged in or wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now reattach the keyboard & mouse, plug the power cord back in, & start up the Mac. Now see if your USB ports work any better.
Best of luck!
Patrick

Clean-installation of Leopard having issues with OD but upgrading not
The server is a 10.4.11 with open directory, dns and AFP that it was working fine with 20 iMac (10.4.11) for long time, we are considering to update the clients to Leopard, the big problem is coming to connect with the OD, if I upgraded a tiger imac to leopard it works perfectly taking 10 seconds to connect. But if I do a clean installation it takes 10-20 min or sometimes doesn't connect. Curiously if I try to add the OD in the Directory Utility using the name it takes 5 mins but using the IP is immediately. Please, ready what I check before to tell me that it is a dns problem.
-- I've checked all the network settings, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , etc being the same that the client upgrated from tiger that works fine.
-- I've checked all settings in the Directory Utility.
-- The client is up-to-date with the server
-- The file /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos is right.
-- nslookup, ping and trace work fine and with good timing.
-- I've stopped the OD server (setting standalone and starting again), without any help.
-- Physical connection obviously is ok
Any help could be valuable, thanks in advancefirst at all thanks for your help.
All the clients have in the primary dns the server ip, and the server doesn't have dhcp server because all the machines use fixed ip. Btw I'm using the same settings that the tiger clients, and these always work perfectly..
the result of the changeip is:
[server.ds.perico] /Users/macroot > sudo changeip -checkhostname
Password:
Primary address = 192.168.7.20
Current HostName = server.ds.perico
DNS HostName = server.ds.perico
The names match. There is nothing to change.
Thanks in advance -
Have been using your products since 1984. Very sorry I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Wiped out all my old applications. Out of business until I get this fixxed. Can I go back to previous operating system? Time Machine?
Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
In the future:
Before upgrading consider:
Don't upgrade if you are in the midst of important work. Wait until you have finished.
If you are having problems with your computer get them sorted out before you upgrade.
Verify that any mission critical software will be compatible with the upgrade.
