I get the spinning beach ball when I open preview, it wont go away, can i somehow stop the process its trying to do?

You can quit Preview by selecting it in Activity Monitor and then clicking on the red octagon 'Quit Process'.  That does not solve the issue of the beach ball' as such.  Perhaps. a reinstall of the OS might sole the problem.  That is simply a guess on my part.

  • HT2486 How can I change the first contact that appears when I open address book?

Every time I open Address book, it opens on the same person. Someone I don't really want as the first contact I see every day!...
Is there a setting to change this? or a way to set a "Key Contact"?
    Thanks

    Use the Settings app
Settings > iTunes and App Store > tap on the incorrect Apple ID that appears > Sign Out > then sign in with your correct Apple ID.
Keep in mind that all apps downloaded or purchased are always associated with the Apple ID used to purchase or download them. As those apps have updates you will need to enter the Apple ID and password that was used for them. If you want to avoid this delete all of the apps purchased or downloaded with a previous Apple ID and download them again with the current Apple ID. You will have purchase any apps that are not free.

  • Premiere Pro CC (2014 version) crashes (beach ball) when trying open certain large Projects

    Hi,
I'm currently editing for a TV channel using the latest version of Premiere Pro CC and certain projects (it seems to be with ones with a lot of footage) crash when I open it. Basically, it doesn't even load all the footage up, one that crashed just now said it had around 140 files left to load, but the beach ball arrives and I sat there waiting for half an hour and nothing happen, apart from the beach ball spinning.
Now, we're on an high spec iMac 3.5Ghz i, 32GB ram, 512gb Flash Storage, 4GB Geforce Graphics card, so I don't think the issue can be the mac, unless the macs faulty, but seems to work fine, when I create new projects etc.
Also, their workflow uses USB 3.0 drives, could this be the bottle-neck making them crash? That being said I've edited lots off my USB 3.0 drive at home and my desktop is a lot weaker then this iMac.
Any ideas what the issue may be?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
Please mention the exact version of Premiere Pro. Assuming you are using 2014 version, please try some steps mentioned below.
    1. Clean the media cache files by navigating to /Users/User Name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
    2. Check the version of the drivers of your NVidia card. So, go to Apple Menu>System Preferences and check if you have a CUDA Preference pane if it is not there then go to the below link and update the Card to latest drivers.
CUDA Drivers for MAC Archive | NVIDIA
    3. Also, please mention if you have any third party plugins used in the project. If yes, then try to update those Plugins or copy and paste those plugins to some other location and Trash them from MediaCore of Premiere Pro. The location of third party plugins is mentioned below.
Startup Drive or MAC HD /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0
    Hope it helps.
    Regards,
    Vinay

  • Can't get beyond the spinning beach ball when I open mail

I am running 10.3.9 and when I launch Mail, it opens about a dozen different mail messages and the beach ball starts spinning. After a few force quits and disk utility repair permissions, I am stuck. Please help!
    Thanks!
    Brian

Try launching Mail holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
If the problem persists, you’ll have to re-create the preferences file:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem). If you have a backup of your data that includes a working copy of this file, you may try restoring it from the backup to avoid the remaining steps.
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
    5. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    6. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    7. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.

I upgraded to Lion on my MacBook Pro. When I close Address Book it automatically quits. When I close other applications they stay open on my task bar. How can I get Address Book to stay open on my task bar?

    Hello charlgilbert,
It sounds like you would like to send a text from your phone number on your portable computer. You can do this by setting iMessage to start new conversations from your phone number in the Messages settings:
On OS X, find out which addresses are enabled:
In Messages, choose Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
From: iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime           and iMessage
              http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5538
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • When I launch address book, multiple windows open

When I launch address book, multiple windows open, and I can't find a way to close them unless I do it one at a time.  I must have chosen at some point "open all contacts" or something like that, but am at a loss as to how to prevent this in the future. I've tried command +option+w, to no avail.  Ideas?  thanks!

    Untick this box:
Or use alt/option + Cmd + Q to Quit and DIscard Windows.
    Regards.

When I launch Address Book, it immediately closes and the control console reflects the above error. Any suggestions on how to fix? I am running latest version of OS X.

    Has it worked before?
Did you do any upgrade before the problem arised?
Is it used in Sync scripts or Backup?
Have you run Disk Utility to repair permissions?

  • Palm Desktop software - Fails to open with msg "Error: Failed to open Address Book database"

In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working.  So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just yesterday, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open Address Book database”.  I think this error was caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system yesterday.
I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my address list, calendar, and memo.  The problem is that the error with the Address Book database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1 on Windows XP SP3.  I do NOT  have an export file of the Palm address book or other databases.  However, I do have five levels of backup history on my external Maxgor backup drive.
Specifically, on my current c drive I have files in the directory:
    C:\Program Files\Handspring\WR\address
address.bak                  5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                address.dat                   5/24/2011
                Personal.ABA                11/6/2008
                Unfiled.ABA                   3/28/2008
On my most recent backup of my system, there are the following files:
address.bak                 5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                            address.dat                  5/12/2011
                            Personal.ABA              11/6/2008
                            Unfiled.ABA                  3/28/2008
I have not listed the four older backup versions.
I haven’t tried any corrective measures yet (I don’t want to make matters worse) and am hoping that someone can guide me along the right path.
Is it possible for me to just rename the “current” address.dat file to something like address.SAV and then copy the Address.dat file file with date of 5/12/2011 into the current directory.  Will the software then just use the older version of the data, or must I do something else.
I am grateful for any assistance.  Thank you very much.

Thanks for the speedy response.  However, I read the article for which you provided the link, and I hve also read many other articles that I found via search, but I don't think these will help me.  All of these articles seem to assume that (1) you have a handheld to which you can sync and thereby rebuild the database on the PC, or (2) you have a backup that you created via the Palm Desktop export function.  Unfortunately, I have neither and so I don't think any of these solutions will work for me.
I did read with great interest an article that stated that recent versions of Palm Desktop have a built-in function that will repair a corrupted Datebook database.  Will this also fix a corrupted Address Book database which is my problem?
So, I downloaded and attempted to install the latest version of Palm Desktop.  I was careful to read the instructions that stated NOT to uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, but to just install the latest version on top of my current Palm Desktop.  However, when I attempted to do the installation, the installer software said it could not install on top of my current software and that I should first uninstall my current software.
    I have some questions now:
    (1) If I uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, will this destroy my Address Book, Datebook, and Memo databases ( I don't care about the ToDo database)?  If so, what can I do to preserve those databases?
    (2) Is there really a function built in the recent versions of Palm Desktop that will fix a corrupted database?  Is this an "automatic" function that will detect and fix a broken database or is this something I will have to invoke?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why do I get the spinning beach ball when I try to change from Events to Photos.  How do I fix it?

Why do I get the spinning beach ball when I try to change from Events to Photos.  How do I fix it?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Error opening Address Book

When trying to open Address Book I get this message: "You cannot use this version of the application Addressbook with this version of Mac OS X". Only thing is, the address book CAME with this Leopard version, didn't it?  I've been using Entourage mainly so I'm sure it's been a while since using Address book, but now that Entourage has crashed (so sad as you cannot get a new version!!!) I wanted to go back to Addressbook, but find I cannot access it.  Are there any Addressbook updates I can get?  Which package does Addressbook come with these days?  It's neither in iLife or iWork, both of which I've updated.
    Any help would be valued!
    - Pingen

Address Book is part of the Operating System, not iLife, as you suspected.  What version of Address Book do you have installed?  Have you recently ran Software Update to see if there’s a newer version?  I have version 4.1 on Leopard 10.5.8.
Perhaps there’s a problem with Disk Permissions.  You could run Disk Utility to check your permissions.  To Repair your permissions you may need to run that function a few times.  I think on Leopard you have to repair permissions after booting from the Install disks but you can try it first from your internal drive and see if it will run without rebooting.

  • Very slow opening Address Book and Mail

Opening Address Book takes about 45 seconds to see the contacts. The application window appears but it's empty for 45 seconds. Just done the 10.6 upgrade and restarted several times but it's no faster. I have 443 records.
Has anyone else had this problem. Any suggestions to fix?
    Thanks

I actually figured out how to do that but it didn't fix the issue. I deleted all the addresses and told it to re-merge the information. The only issue I ran into was it wanted to delete it off my other computer as well which is still on 10.5.8. I'm not going to update it till I get this issue fixed probably. When it popped up on my Mac Pro to delete all my contacts I said no and told it to replace the files back on MobileMe and when it re synced with my MacBookPro it still had the same issue. I even re-installed the address book.

  • Spinny beach ball when i try to import an aiff file (6mins) into idvd 6.0.3

im reading the posts about audio encoding problems with idvd and
i get spinny beach ball when i try to import an aiff file (6mins) into idvd 6.0.3
right after i click the import button. wondering if this is a part of that problem. im not at the encoding phase. actually im trying to make the simplest dvd in the world. 1 picture and 1 song on the main menu-thats it. i have it set to "best quality" so it doesnt encode in the background-so says the idvd help menu. when i click import or drag the song file into the window (tried it many ways) i get infinite spinny beach ball. dont know if im waiting long enough before i force-quit, about 10 mins. didnt think this would be too hard for the machine to do considering im not burning yet, i just opened the program and this is the first thing i tried to do. any help??? i have a intel mini 1.66 with 2 gb ram, 10 gb free on hd, OS 10.4.9, and using a 23gb imovie file for the video. i didnt try plist deleting or reinstall yet because this is the only problem ive had. repaired permissions, checked the drive with disk utility. ran software update, nothing. nada. HELP!!!

i figured it out last night. idvd doesnt like .aiff's on my machine, maybe because its an intel. i converted it to apple lossless and it worked fine, it imported instantly. .mp3 and .m4a fine as well. i dont know why it wont import an .aiff, maybe because its an intel??? dont know. everyu time i try any aiff file on my machine, idvd does the spinny beachball forever. i even tried to reinstall idvd and that didnt work either, so i gave up and converted it to lossless.
to clarify, im just trying to make a simple dvd with my imovie footage, a main menu picture and 1 song to play on the main menu. i wanted to use the .aiff instead converting it to .mp3 because i didnt want to lose any quality. i guess apple lossless is good enough... whatever, just glad it works now. maybe ill be able to burn the dvd sometime this month, and im ready for the problems that will come when i try to do that. from what i hear i have to pack a lunch. everyone is saying ill have to mow my lawn by the time its done. that *** and not looking forward to that.

  • PAB_CMD_GET_PABS:Unable to open address book

Hi, i have running iMS 5.2 with more than 40000 users. I have the next problem with one of our users when he wants to make a new message: a window error appears with the next message: "PAB_CMD_GET_PABS:Unable to open address book"
    Anyone knows why?
    Thanks a lot.
    Hugo

As far as I know there are three things that can lead to this error message
<ul><li>The ldap-server in the paburi and the ldap-server configured in the mail-server differ
<li>The paburi does not contain the RDN of the user as it's last ou component<br>That is: If for example your user has the following RDN: uid=the_user.<br>Then the RDN of the paburi <b>must</b> be ou=uid=the_user.
<li>The path to the paburi doesn't exist in the ldap.<br>That is: If your paburi ends in the following dn: ou=uid=the_user, ou=domain, o=pab<br> then the nodes o=pab and ou=domain, o=pab <b>must</b> exist. The Webmail application will create the node ou=uid=the_user, ou=domain, o=pab, but <i>not</i> its parents.
    </ul>
    I hope this helps.
