i would like to solve this "errors" or rather strip off this dhcpcd thingy (in a config file) which is obviously started at boot. the network is completely managed by wicd.
i have no clue what "cannot open default user face" means. already googled without any good results :<
best regards,

Don't worry about 'default user face', it's nothing... you can set it in:
SystemSettings -> Advanced -> Login Manager -> Users
under 'User Images' [ bottom-right ].
I expect when installing you elected to install dhcp [ Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol ] when configuring the network ?
Dhcpcd is its' daemon. You could uninstall dhcp... pacman -R dhcp
I presume you have onboard ethernet and a pci network card ?
Could you disable your onboard ethernet in the systems BIOS ? Then you can concentrate on configuring your card. I've
never used 'wicd' so I can't help you there.
Not much help, I know but better than nothing

After the upgrade to KDE 4, I notice this msg in errors.log and other logs:
"kdm_greet[3456]: Cannot open default user face".
Has anyone else seen this and know what may cause it? A search on the net shows that this error is supposed to be fixed in KDE 4.<something>, yet it appears here.
I also see this in kdm.log:
"kdmgreet(3455) KLocalePrivate::initEncoding: Cannot resolve system encoding, defaulting to ISO 8859-1.
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

    >                   Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server"
I have a Radeon video card.
I wonder if any of these errors may be connected.

That error means you have compatibility mode enabled. From
Say No to Compatibility mode : To disable Compatibility mode or confirm its not enabled, find Outlook.exe file and right click, then select Properties, Compatibility tab.

  • When I open Remote Desktop Connection, it reads "cannot open default.rdp".  What can I do to fix this?

Hi, when I open RDP on my iMac, it reads "cannot open default.rdp" and it never saves my preferences or connections.  It resets after each launch.
How do I go about fixing this?
    UPDATE and FIX
I went to the Finder menu, clicked on GO, held down Option (Alt) to bring up the Library.
In the Library, I browsed to Preferences, found the com.microsoft.rdp plist and deleted it. Then I emptied my Trash.  If you get an error saying rdp plist is in use and cannot be deleted, quit out of RDP or reboot the machine (if quitting RDP doesn't work).
Also, there was a permissions issue.  I browsed to the Applications folder, located the Microsoft Office folder, right clicked the folder (or CTRL click) and selected GET INFO.  First--In order to make any changes, authenticate with admin privileges using the lock icon (put in your username and password). From there (under Sharing & Permissions), I made sure my username (account currently logged in) and everyone had Read & Write privileges, then I clicked on the little gear icon (drop-down) and selected Apply to Enclosed items.
    Voila!
    This worked for me.

Actually, I still receive an error when I try to save the connections.
I get an error that reads
"Make sure that you have permission to write to the location where you want to save the file"
Any help with this would be great!

    WTF?!
The fact that I need it doesn't explicitly mean that I am currently using it.

MinimalBoot wrote:having any kind of network manager ( network, networkmanager, wicd, .. ) running should be enough
Not for wireless it shouldn't.  But in either case, if you took my above advise, followed the wiki, tried reading the wiki, and followed the simple step by step instructions on connecting manually you would have easily pinpointed your problem and other users here could then help.
I did pinpoint my problem - dhcpcd is not being started on boot, though rc.conf contains everything needed for this.

The wiki page on wireless and/or network management is not 10 pages.  The wireless page may seem a little long, but a quick glance will tell you that it has various subsections that can be skipped depending on your wireless card.
In the end, though.  If you aren't willing to spend a little of your own time reading the answers that are already availble, why on earth would I waste my time rewriting all those answers here?  So you could just ignore them again?
Best of luck, I can't imagine you finding much help here with that approach.
Excuse me ? If you are here just to brag about having an awesome Wiki page, please, don't waste your time.

  • I have Ver. 3.6.13 and I have reinstalled to no avail. My TABS do not work, I cannot open a new tab...either from the '+' tab or from within the 'File' menu

Everything else seems to work fine. But I cannot open tabs. I just downloaded the latest and same version and reinstalled. That did not work.
    Thank you

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • The Audio Service is not running when I open certain programs

My audio works fine when I boot my computer.  However, any time I got to click on the speaker icon at the bottom right the audio service stops running.  When I use the system.msc fix that is very common on the web by the time I open the panel the
audio has already realized that it is running and starts running again.  If I open razer comms, it stop working again and I either can open system.msc to fix it, or I can just click the speaker icon to fix it.  When I open a game, like FFXIV it stop
working again, click the speaker and all the sudden it turns back on.
I have read every thread I can find on the web about the "Audio is not running" issue but no one seems to have had this exact problem and I don't know how to fix it.
For the love of god help

    Hi,
By saying the audio service us not working, do you mean the speaker icon show an red "X" ?
Please take a check with the following KB article:
In Windows 7 a red 'X' may appear over the speaker icon in the notification area even though audio output functions correctly
If this is the issue, then this behavior is cosmetic in nature and does not affect the performance of Windows.

  • Adobe Reader X will not run and Cannot be unistalled

I am running Windows XP on my laptop and I recently allowed Adobe to update to Adobe Reader X.  I immediately encountered the problem of not being able to open PDF documents and then Reader X just stopped working all together.
Now I can not uninstall it or reload any older version at all.  In all cases I get an error message stating that "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" and then askes for the location of the file AcroRead.msi.  This file does not exist anywhere on my laptop.
Any idea how I can remove Adobe reader from this machine?  I have tried all of the manual removal suggestions and always end up with the above mentioned problem.

You may want to try the following.
Remove all traces of Reader (not only the program) from your system using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. This is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can produce problems with Win 7, but you can still download it from from places like
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Then, download the Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

Which security software (firewall) do you have?

  • Screensaver is not running in JDS environment for USER

    Using
    SunOS kuna 5.10 Generic_118822-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-100
    Solaris 10 3/05 s10_74L2a SPARC
hi all i am new to this thread
i hav a problem with JDS in solaris 10 sparc (Sun Blade 150)
i am not able to run xscreensaver only in user accounts but i am able to do in root(CDE is ok for users)
the message it is giving while logging in to user accounts is
There was an error starting up the screensaver:
Failed to execute child process "xscreensaver" (No such file or directory)
Screensaver functionality will not work in this session.
& i am not able to lock the screen
    any suggestions please
Note I have read the early post about the protection and it is ok on this machine:
    # ls -altr xscreensaver
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root bin 348652 Jun 22 2005 xscreensaver
    Any further suggestions?

Sorry I did not state the situation correctly. The only issue
that I'm seeing is for GNOME logins. A GNOME user trys to lock the screen with the screen lock icon and a message appears:
    "Cannot execute 'xscreensaver-command -lock'
Details: Failed to execute child process "xscreensaver-command" (No such file or directory)
The screen saver appears to be in the correct location:
    linford@kuna>> pwd
    /usr/openwin/bin
    linford@kuna>> ls -altr xscreen*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 269856 Jan 22 2005 xscreensaver-demo
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 31092 Jan 22 2005 xscreensaver-command
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root bin 348652 Jun 22 2005 xscreensaver
When I run the xscreensaver-demo, I can lock the screen and start the xscreensaver daemon.
However, the GNOME screen lock icon does not work and the error is the same as listed above. It is as if the GNOME screen lock action from the icons runs from a link to the actual xscreensaver-command which is in /usr/openwin/bin.
I've tried to look at the icon properties but they do not show via selecting "properties" from "right-clicking" the screen-lock icon.
So where does GNOME put links for the screenlock command?
As it seems that I need to restore links to xscreensaver and the xscreensaver-command.
could you please clarify this statement:
i am not able to run xscreensaver only in user
accounts but i am able to do in root(CDE is ok for
users) the message it is giving while logging in to
user accounts isNormally, xscreensaver does not run for the root
account. That's the way the code is written. You
could always grab the source code and modify it if
that's a hang up for you. If you are root and need a
    screensaver try xlock.
    alan
