Etherchannel and STP ?
Looking for a bit of tech advice..
Each of my floors connect back to the core via a single uplink (fiber). Floor switches are 3560's. Floors 5,6 and 7 and the most important b/c
of the call center / services we provide.
I would like to use redundant links for each of these floors back to the core using etherchannels on both sides of the trunk.
Etherchannel will be LACP - active active on both sides.
On the core side, I will spread the etherchannel (LACP) across line cards and on each 3560 there will be an EC between Gi0/49 and Gi 0/50.
I have tested this in the lab and it works fine..but
With STP turned on for the 3 vlans in the trunk, the re-converge time is to slow once one of the ports in the EC goes down and comes back up.
If I kill STP for the 3 vlans, then there is no relearn time when the physical port comes back up in the EC.
Given the fact that my EC config is correct, do I really need STP in this scenario ?
Advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Dave
Well I would always run spanning tree protocol, no matter what. It's just not a good idea to do otherwise. Even if you don't have any "physical loops" in your network, you should always run it.
You could always run L3
But if I remember correct, on an Etherchannel, spanning tree BPDUs will follow one port within an etherchannel, but I'm not 100% correct about how that part works.

Etherchannel and STP on HP Blade Switches
Hi Guys,
I have a 6509 with and etherchannel connection to an HP Blade switch... the channel is made up of two phy ports between the two switches...
When I try ti bring up the link, the 6509 ports go into err-disable and i get the message below.
I have done all (I think?) checks that there is to ensure etherchannle compatibility and STP stuff but still no luck...
can anyone suggest soemthing I do ro check that might shed light on this...
thanks

thanks for your response. currently the etherchannel operatiosn mode on the 6509 is set to manual, which is the case globally for the 6509 and we have 50 pairs of this blade switch running on this 6509... I don't think that that is the cuase of this issue since this is the only one not forming the channel and goes into err-disable...
the blades also have similar configs in them...
the only thing I see different on ports 10/24-25 is that it has bpdu-guard set to disable while the rest are set to default... could this make a diffrence?
also, does the order of enabling the cisco end and the HP blade end make a difference? i.e. should I bring up one first than the other?
the thing is I cannot "experiment" fully as this is a full prod network...
Any input si appreciated... -
How CSM deals with the situation when both modules become active? How can I configure CSM to passthrough STP BPDUs to break loops? I know how can I do it on FWSMs but wondering if there is a way to do it on CSM or there is no way to avoid loops when FT vlan is dead.
There is no way to let BPDU go through and there is no way to avoid loop if the FT vlan goes down.
You have to make sure it never goes down by using etherchannel and any other possible solution.

Missing "(sent)" files roundtripping b/n FCP and STP
Sorry, but I'm posting this here because the STP forum is quite slow to reply. And, I'm not sure if this is an FCP or STP issue.
I have just finished my first project using STP. I was doing a lot of round tripping b/n FCP5 and STP (about 15 clips) and everything was working splendidly. Airconditioner noise easily zapped! A beautiful thing. Annoying pops and cracks removed with just a few clicks of the mouse. More beautiful things. Then...I finished the project (thank gawd), output via Compressor and into DVDSP. The final DVDs are produced and the client loves them. But, I had both a 30i and 24Pa version of the project. I had originally edited the 30i version and then duplicated this project and removed all the Advanced Pulldown to produce the 24P version (without having to re-edit; another beautiful thing). Note, I DID NOT do the STP round-tripping until the 24P version of the project. After everything was complete, I deleted the 30i project (it was never needed) leaving just the 24P version on the internal disks.
Suddenly, when I next opened the 24P version of the project ALL OF THE STP-FIXED AUDIO WAS GONE! NOW OFFLINE!!!
Where the heck did they go? And, where were they originally? When you round-trip like this, what kind of file is STP (or FCP) creating? In the Browser, I noticed FCP creates a new audio file clip icon and appends "(sent)" to the original audio clip name (e.g. an audio clip with the name "21DConfRoom03" has a duplicate? audio clip created, presumably by STP, with the new filename "21DConfRoom03 (sent)")
Where are these so-called "(sent)" audio clips source stored on disk? Where in the standard FCP file structure are they? Is it possible FCP was putting them into the 30i version of the project file structure by mistake? (remember, i first edited in the 30i project version before duplicating and creating a 24P version).
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
-MichaelWhen you say ProTools outputting individual aiff, is it a mix down file?
Yes. I have certain audio configurations that we need to output for the networks. Ch1 & 2 are a stereo mix, then CH3&4 might be Mix minus Music, then Ch5 Mono Dialog, Ch6 Mono Prod Audio. Ch7&8 SFX....9 and 10 Stereo music.
So the mixer mixes down what we need for the various tracks.
Also, as I change my film, is there any way to update the found files in ProTools?
Don't change your cut. You should not be sending the audio to the mix if you aren't done cutting. You wait until you have picture lock, then send the audio. If there is a change, then you re-export the OMF, they reconform, and send new tracks. HOW does the audio guy conform? Got me...I just know that they can.

Have come across a very useful tutorial resource for sound editing using Final Cut and STP.
http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/finalcut7105
As a Logic user I wil normally use Logic or STP for all my sound editing, but I've learned some cool things from this tutorial as I always do with mac provideo training.
Got a discount code good until 11th August for 33% discount on downloads at macprovideo.
http://www.macprovideo.com/cart/code/10iPadLaunch33
JGHello Ian,
Yes. The deeper I go into the tutorial the better it is. There is as much on sound editing directly in FCP as in STP which is a refreshing approach. I always enjoy tutorials by Michael Wohl.
I included a 33% off discount code for downloads in the post above. I dont use these coupons as I have a full subscription for $25 a month. For me this is excellent value.

Layer 3 Etherchannel and MPLS MTU
Greetings,
If two 7609 are connected through layer 3 giga etherchannel and 7609-1 sends a frame with 1514 bytes plus two MPLS header to 7609-2, does the command mpls mtu 1522 under the giga etherchannel interface on both routers is enough?
Or it is necessary to add the global command system jumbomtu 1522 and the interface command mtu 1522 under physical gigainterfaces participating on the channel?
Cisco docs say many platforms will accept frames higher than 1500 bytes (up to 24 bytes) to accommodate control flags; that is why I am considering just mpls mtu xxx is enough.
Also, reading Cisco doc I understood that system jumbomtu xxxx and mtu xxxx should be used together. I tested sending frames higher than 1514 bytes (without MPLS tags) and system jumbomtu xxxx alone was not enough, ping failed; it was necessary to add mtu xxxx under the interface. Do you have a different experience?
Thanks,

We had some peculiar exp with 7600 (7609/7606) boxes in which we did change the physical mtu of the interface instead of mpls mtu.
Again that did the trick for us even in 7200 where we monitored the same kinda behaviour..

EtherChannel and LAN Design for new buildiing(s)
What is the recommended best practice for EtherChannel size for a 3750G-12S stack? Will I benefit from stacking these with the StackWise cable on the backplane, or would it be better to run these independently back to the 4006 with individual EtheChannels?
The 3750G-12S stack will likely be 1 or 2 devices at distribution layer for upwards of 18 - 20 2960G-48 access layer switches and approximately 20 1242LAP AP's in addition to max capacity of end users attached to the switches.
I am considering implementing a 4 gig EtherChannel between the 3750's to the 4006 for this load. My limit is the number of available ports on the 4006 and obviously the max load of links on the EtherChannel.Unsure there's a single "best practice" for stacking or not. Some advantages/disadvantages to both. Part of the decision might rest on whether the 3750s will be L2 or L3.
Stackwise could be a performance bottleneck if you believe there would be much traffic between switch ports, but if most will transit your 4006, your links to it would be the bottleneck.
What you might consider, a single 3750G-12S (four?) that can handle 2 links from each access switch, that are Etherchanneled and not connected to the same 3750 stack member. This with the 4 gig Etherchannel to the 4006, which again should be spread across stack members. -
MIBS to Monitor Etherchannel and trunks via SNMP
I would like to monitor the status of etherchannel and trunk configurations in 6500 Catalyst switches running both CATOS and IOS. I would like to understand the specific mibs/OIDS that should be monitored for etherchannels and trunks. I am trying to get a better handle on tracking the etherchannels and trunk dynamically and then understanding when the ports are having issues (up/down and errors). I need to understand how to differentiate these type of ports from regular access ports.
Thanks,
TimHi Tim,
what exactly do you want to query via SNMP?
For an (PAgP) Etherchannel, the member-interfaces might be interesting:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3957914#3957914
For a trunk, you could start with the operational mode, depending on the platform you can use:
vlanTrunkPortDynamicStatus (CISCO-VTP-MIB):
vlanTrunkPortDynamicStatus.49 = notTrunking
vlanTrunkPortDynamicStatus.50 = trunking
vlanPortIslOperStatus (CISCO-STACK-MIB):
vlanPortIslOperStatus.13.43 = notTrunking
vlanPortIslOperStatus.13.44 = trunking
Hope that helps

VTP and STP on SG300-28 Switch
Hello everyone,
I have a question, does the SG300-28 support VTP and STP?. I want to add it to my network's VTP domain so I don't have to manage vlans manually on the SG300-28 and also be able to configure STP to keep my network loop free.
Thanks.VTP = no. You must manually create and manage all of your VLANs. However, you should look into GVRP, which is a VTP replacement.
STP = Yes, but there are different STPs. The SF 300 supports 802.1d "old" SPT, .w "RSTP", and "MST".
You should look up the specifications.
If you are using any variety of PVST, you may have issues. Beware. -
VLAN and STP compitability between Cisco 2950 and SRW2048
How Cisco 2950 and Linksys SRW2048 switches can be combined to work fine with more than one VLAN's and STP?? I want both switches to support three VLAN's and STP for loop free network. Can some body help me out to combine linksys and cisco switches to interconnect to form my Network???
I believe that the SRW2048 is a 48 port managed switch. The easiest way to set the VLAN and STP configuration of is to access the web utility of this switch via 192.168.1.254. You have to go to VLAN Management and he needs to create the VLANs. The default VLAN of the switch is VLAN 1. You need to create 2 more VLANs by choosing the VLAN IDs and the name you want for these VLANs.
After creating the VLANS, you need to determine the LAN of the switch you want to assign to each VLAN and the Trunk port or the port where you need to connect the SRW2048 to the Cisco 2950 switch. Go to the port setting and make this port as “truck”, and leave the other ports as “access”. Go to VLAN to ports and manually allocate the each LAN ports to the desired VLAN ID number. Take note that all ports that are members of VLAN1 should be “untagged” and the rest should be “tagged”. Save the settings you made.
The STP configuration for the SRW2048 can be found also in the web utility. Just go to the Spanning Tree tab and setup your desired STP configuration.
For the Cisco 2950, I am not quite sure on how to create these settings but I saw a useful link that might help you:

Etherchannel and port suspended
hi all,
i created an etherchannel on my 4507 leading to a 3750. i did it the way i always do that works. when i put a specific port into the channel, it goes into "suspended" line protocol. what does this mean?Etherchannel
"Some messages from the switch might look like errors but are part of the normal EtherChannel process. For example, as a new port is configured as a member of an existing EtherChannel, you might see this message:
4d00h: %EC-5-L3DONTBNDL2: FastEthernet0/2 suspended: incompatible partner port with
FastEthernet0/1
When the port first is added to the EtherChannel, it is incompatible because the STP runs on the channel and the new port. After STP takes the new port through its progression of states, the port automatically is added into the EtherChannel.
Other messages do indicate a port-compatibility error. In these cases, the cause of the error is shown. For example, the following message tells that FastEthernet0/3 has a different duplex mode than the other ports in the EtherChannel:
4d00h: %EC-5-CANNOT_BUNDLE2: FastEthernet0/3 is not compatible with FastEthernet0/1
and will be suspended (duplex of Fa0/3 is full, Fa0/1 is half)
Are you sure you have the same configs on each side?

Etherchannel and HP teaming software- one, the other or both?
I have servers that I want to bundle the gigabit NIC's together for both load balancing and redundancy. Do I use the HP teaming software to bundle the NIC's, use etherchannel on the 4506 that they are plugged into, or both? What are the advantages to each, and any links or documentation that can be supplied would be appreciated.
Thanks.Both. On the Cisco switch you would configure the ports to be part of an etherchannel while the NICs themselves need to be teamed using HP teaming software.
