Etherchannel in 2950T and 2960G

I read many articles in Cisco webpage that i can make etherchnnel between normal ports in two switches catalyst.
Can I make an Etherchannel using two uplink ports on a Catalyst 2950T and two normal ports on a Catalyst 2960G?.
Thanks

I don't know of any restrictions on which ports you can use on these boxes...

  • Trunk Port for 2950 and 2960G

    Hi Guys,
I have tried connecting 2 switch using a trunk port in able for VLAN to run on 2950 switch, 2950 and 2960G, but the problem is, it keeps going up and down when I check the logs. The client experienced intermittent network connection by this problem. What seems to be the problem here? I already replaced the cables.
    Here is the config:
    They are connected via cross-cable
    2950:
    Int f0/24 --> 100mbps port
    switchport mode trunk
    2960G:
    Int G0/1 --> 1Gbps port
    switchport mode trunk
*I believe they will auto negotiate their current speed and duplex.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers!

  • Gigabit EtherChannel between 6509 and Intel Pro/1000 MTx

I am trying to configure gigabit etherchannel to connect our backup server with a 6509. The Intel Pro/1000 MT nic in the server has two gigabit ports and supports teaming using LACP. I have configured two gig ports on the 6509 as layer 2 etherchannel ports ( channel-group 2 mode active ). The switch ports always show up as disabled. I can't seem find any documentaion on connecting server to switch using etherchannel ( although the Intel Pro MT nic documentaion does mention it ). Does anyone have experience doing this ?

We always just use load balancing on the Intel NICs and do nothing with the switch but make sure that the ports are in the correct vlan.
We have been using this for over 3 years flawlessly.
    Our switches are a Cat4006 and Cat4506.

  • Gig etherchannel between 3508XL and 4507R

Anyone out there doing this? I can get the channel to come up, but the 3508 can only seem to pass traffic on whichever link of the two in the channel comes up first. The 2nd link shows no STP running as I expect it should (based on doing this between a 3550-12G and the 4507R). The result is that I lose connectivity to half the devices attached to the 3508XL (the ones whose traffic is trying to traverse the 2nd link, I would guess).
Cisco TAC hasn't been able to help.
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
That does sound like a STP problem.
Does 'show spanning-tree blocked ports' show that any of the channel ports are blocking (at either end) ?
And 'show etherchannel port-channel' shows 2 ports in the bundle and both up ?
Thats the kind of thing i would expect to see if the channel was not operating correctly, in which case STP would block one port.
    Cheers

  • Etherchannel/Portchannel bandwidth and speed - Cat6500/Nexus

I am looking for the documents describing bandwidth and speed on the Portchannel/Etherchannel interfaces.
For the port channel build out of 4 x 1Gb interfaces on the WS-X6148 or WS-X6548 blades we will have 1gb of bandwidth.
For the port channel build out of 4 x 1Gb interfaces on the WS-X6748 blades we will have 4gb of bandwidth.
When you run "show int po1" you will see 40Gb of bandwidth and 1Gb of speed for both cases (61xx/65xx and 67xx blades).
Port channel build out of 4 10Gb interfaces will show 40Gb of bandwidth and 10Gb speed.
What would be real bandwidth on this port-channel?
And the other question would be if there is any way to see real bandwidth for the Port-Channel? Let say to see 4Gb on the port channel on4  WS-X6748 ports.

6148 is a special case due to the line card architecture. For other use cases when you bundle interfaces into a port-channel you do get an aggregate bandwidth equivalent to the sum of the bundled ports. Whether you will be able to use the full bandwidth depends on how traffic is hashed over the links and that is more or less related to the diversity of your flows along with the underlying hashing algorithm. Over time advancements have been made in the actual hashing algorithms so you need to choose the best algorithm for your specific environment.
A word of advise will be to understand the architecture of the product you are implementing bundling on just to be aware of any corner cases. There is no easy way to identify limitations imposed by hardware other than doing your homework first.

  • Nexus and 2960g connect issue

    Hi All
I am having issue while connect the cisco 2960G and nexus 5000, i have attached the network setup. so kinldy check and update how i can proceed further.

    Hi Sudharsan,
    Nice working with you again
So, your issue is that the 2960 switches are seeing the Nexus device as one. What you have to do is to create a port-channel between the 2960 and nexus devices. That should solve your problem.

  • 6500 - Etherchannel with HP and ESX

I have a couple questions that I cant find the answer to (which surprised me).
Do all NIC(s) in a team need to be plugged into the same blade (switch), or is it technically a single stacked switch?
HP Server NIC teaming and ESX Nic teaming docs have different hash methods. (see links below).
How do you reconcile this or does it matter? Should you specify load-balancing method per switch module and plug all nics in a team into that specfic switch?

    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/lan-switching/etherchannel/98469-ios-etherchannel.html
    Thank you for any responses,
    JT

    JT,
One other thing you should look into is that sometimes you don't need to have portchannles towards the ESX hosts, because they use NIC teaming on and when one logical NIC fails the traffic simply shifts to the other logical NIC without loosing a ping packet.   The same thing happened when we disconnected a physical link. We did this testing with Dell Servers, 2ks and 6ks.  The 6ks do not run any portchannel, just simple trunk and it works really well.  Now, you are using 6500 and HP and it maybe all different, but just FYI and if you want to test it.

  • Etherchannel on esw520s and intervlan routing

    Hello
    I have a couple of uc520s
    2 - esw - 520-24p
    2 - esw - 520-48p
    1 - 3560x switch
the 3560x is our core switch. my uplinks between the core and the 4 esw. i was able to get the etherchannels configured and "working" however the fact that the vlan 1 on the esw is the native vlan, i change the native vlan to be vlan 20 and i'm really struggling with this
I have 5 vlans configured on the 4 esw switches data, voice, management, servers, guest.
i can't get the intervlan routing to work properly on the esw. If i configure any vlan on the 3560 i have access to the management vlan
however if i connect my pc to any port on the esw switches i don't have access to the management vlan at all. for some reason intervlan routing isn't properly working. if i want to have access to the management vlan on the esw switches i need to assign a port on the esw to be on the management vlan
if i use the common scenario, all the ports being voice + data, i can't manage any of the switches at all
what else should i do to get this fixed ?
is it something on the ether channels or am i missing something else ?

  • TCP Window Scaling supported on 3750G and 2960G switches?

We have the 3750G with the IOS version 12.2(35)SE5. Does this IOS version and switch support the TCP Window Scaling detailed in this doc?  The doc says Release 12.2(8)T.  And I don't see the 3750G or the 2960G platforms listed in the doc. I'm guessing they're not but rather than guess, I thought I'd ask.  Thanks

Indeed you may, but the doc also notes "Do not use this command unless you clearly understand why you want to change the default value.".
The two common situations where there's possible benefit to increasing the device's TCP receive window are:  to allow faster FTP/RCP downloads to the device or to support quicker BGP bulk transfers.  The former is limited by write speed to flash and the latter might be unusual to need > 64 KB for BDP.
Also, BTW, if you do find a need to work with scaled TCP receive windows on a Cisco device, you probably also should enable (optional) SACK.

  • 10G etherchannel between 4510 and 3850 - NO Link

I'm pulling my hair out on a simple issue, and I could use some advice.   Thank you, in advance.
    I've got a core 4510 switch with 2 12-port 10GE SFP+ modules and my closet has a stack of 3 3850-48p with 2 4-port C3850-NM-2-10G  modules.
I'm using 4 SFP-10Gb-SR SFP's to create an ether-channel between these two switches.
The fiber between them is OM4 cable, and OM3 patch cables.
The distance is about 90 Meters.
I've got po8 created on the 4510 through te1/8 and te2/8.  On the 3850, i've got po8 created on te1/1/4 and te3/1/4.  My problem is that I cannot get a link light at all between these ports.  Absolutely nothing indicating when i hook it up.  I've tested all the patch cables using loop backs and they all respond.  I can even loop back through the complete length of the fiber and i get a link light then also. When i hook them up together, the log on the 4510 starts throwing Rx power low alarms with an Operating value of -29.5 dBm.
I've had Cisco's support go through and verify my port-channel configuration, and they found it to be correct.
I'm starting to wonder if there is larger forces at work here.  Am i bumping into a compatibility issue?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I've removed the interfaces from the etherchannel and tried cross looping.  On the 4510 I get no indication from the LEDs.  On the 3850 I get immediate indication on the LEDs.
One might conclude, Cisco support included, that the SFPs on the 4510 side were bad and should be replaced.   I hesitate to conclude this because, while members of the etherchannel, i get link lights when looping immediately.  Its only when setting the 4510 interfaces back to default and outside the etherchannel that i don't get a response.

  • Etherchannel between 2900 and 7200

    Hello,
We have Etherchannel trunk set up between Catalyst 2924 switch and 7200 router. The trunk consists of 2 links with source-based forwarding, STP disabled on switch and on the router. For some reason, we can't achieve load-balancing on the trunk, that is, one link is currently used at 100%, another at 20%. We would like to achieve 50/50 utilization. Is it possible to do?
    Thanks !
    Konstantine

The Etherchannel trunk consists of 0/11 and 0/12 interfaces. Here's the output from "Show interface" command on a switch:
FastEthernet0/11 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is Fast Ethernet, address is 0001.96bb.51cb (bia 0001.96bb.51cb)

    5 minute input rate 22747000 bits/sec, 7947 packets/sec
    5 minute output rate 8678000 bits/sec, 2548 packets/sec
As you can see, the output rate on interface 0/11 is 300 times lower than on 0/12 and that is our main problem. We have a web farm here (around 100 servers), which is connected via Layer 4 switch to 2924 and then, via Etherchannel trunk, to 7200 router which is default gateway. We tried to use destination-based forwarding (on a switch), but that didn't change anything. The router AFAIK doesn't have any settings to change the forwarding.

  • Etherchannel Simultaneous Primary and Sub-Interface Config

    Hello Cisco Experts:
Question: Can I run layer 2 traffic across EtherChannel and layer 3 traffic simultaneously across the same etherchannel on a subinterface?  If not, and considering the background information below, is there an advisable alternative?  The documentation I've been reading isn't clear on the subject.
    Background
I'd like to split my VLans across (2x) L3 3560 switches interconnected by EtherChannel.  I'll use SVI's for the routing - but if Switch #1 SVI must route to another SVI on Switch #2, I'd like this traffic to cross the EtherChannel instead of heading to another L3 Device before continuing its route to the destination switch.  (I.E. I prefer direct switch to switch routing.)
    Design Preference:
I don't want my etherchannel to become a 100% routed channel.
I don't want to add another connection between the switches - ports are at a premium and budget is tapped.
No access level switches are being used at this time.
    Physical Topology
    Thank you for your time,
    Mike

    Hi Jon:
First, I didn't begin to think you were criticizing my design.  I just wanted to relieve your confusion.
I tested your ideas this morning, and everything checked out and worked fine.  After some more investigation, I remembered why I was asking the question about using EtherChannel with an encapsulated Subinterface & IP Addr. for switch-to-switch routing.
Regrettably it had nothing to do with Intervlan routing, which was working fine.  But it does have something to do with routing between the two switches.
    Link Failure and High Availability
When I began to consider each case of link failure, I discovered 4 cases of link failure that created problematic results.  Two of the cases led to an extra hop, and two of the cases result in a black hole.  These ideas were tested with packet tracer to verify I had a problem.
These instances occur because I'm routing 3 vlans out of each switch.  Each problem could be resolved by a complete HSRP fail-over to the other switch.  But maybe the more elegant decision is a switch-to-switch route with an appropriate administrative distance (preferably using the EtherChannel)?
Note: Primary is the primary WAN connection and Backup is the backup WAN connection.
    Scenario 1: Extra Hop
    Scenario 2: Extra Hop
    Scenario 3: Black Hole
    Scenario 4: Black Hole
Let me know what you think the ideal solution is: 1) use HSRP tracking to failover to the other switch, 2) create a direct switch to switch route using EtherChannel Subinterface with IP, or 3) some third option.
    Thank you for your time,
    Mike

  • Etherchannel suspended between Catalyst 4948 and VSS 6506E

    Hello,
I describe an issue when i need to performe an L2 or L3 Etherchannel from a Catalyst 4948 IOS Enterprise and 2 xCatalyst 6506E bandled with VSS.
From the VSS Side when i plug cables i see on the physicals and Etherchannel that Physical and protocole layer are up. On the 4948 side,
I see that physical layer is up and protocol and Etherchannel interfaces are down.
On the Etherchannel port summary i see that the port state is supended.
On the first attempt, i have test with a L3 etherchannel on both side using no switchport with two IP addresses one at each side on etherchannel interfaces.
The etherchannel are bundled with LACP mode active and on the second attempt with PAGP mode ON.
The same configured on VSS 6506E work fine with Catalyst 3560E.
Please do you have any idea?

Hi David, when ı type "no mls qos channel-consistency" under port-channel
the issue was solved. But ı am not comfortable with that, Because ı want to use Qos feature
