Ethernet adapter not working with new Mac Mini after NetRestore.

I'm currently working with an issue regarding Mini 4,1s and their difference from the main driver set in 10.6.4. I'm in an educational environment and attempting to effectively netrestore a hard drive image that was built on a Mini 3,1 with all possible updates made to the OS (10.6.4).
The new minis have no problem netbooting, and downloading the disc image from the server *over ethernet*. In fact, they do it in a very rapid fashion. The issue is that once the machines boot up, they no longer have ethernet capabilities. In fact, the ethernet device does not even appear in system profiler at all. After reading quite a lot about this problem, it appears that there is a difference in the driver set on the special "Mid-2010 Mini 4,1" update and the driver set found in a normal 10.6.4 install.
I have attempted various permutations of installing the Mid-2010 update, but most of them include having an existing 10.6.4 install that was not built on the Mini, and attempting to install the update over the install, or replacing the driver in suspect itself. The issue persists.
Is there something I'm missing, and is this a common problem?
tl;dr: non mac mini 10.6.4 installation copied on mac mini 4,1, and ethernet drivers don't work.

Thanks for your suggestion, I cloned my 1.83GHZ Mac Mini's main drive with Carbon Copy Cloner and restored it onto a new 2.4GHZ Mac Mini. Since the new Mac was replacing the older one's mother ship role in my HTPC setup, this method would ensure the easiest transition. Everything works fine, except that ethernet wont work, it did before, but doesn't now. I already tried several confirmed-working-by-me cables and no luck.
I tried your step and understand the logic behind them, but as soon as I replaced my files with the ones you suggested from my 2.4GHZ Mac Install Disc, the system reports some conflicts. I repaired permissions after and before this happens (tried twice, once after successfully restoring via Tim Machine) and still it occurred. After reboot Ethernet was still dead and so was WiFi. Luckily I was able to get everything back to normal by replacing the entire Extensions folder with the one prior to the changes. Restoring the two files alone would not do it.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

I've seen some issues with the video adapter putting out only black and white signal with Macbook Pros. That would be an improvement for me.
I can't get SL to play with the video adaper when I plug it into my TV. I get black and white and a bounching broken up signal, as though the refresh rates don't match. I can't play around with the settings because it's impossible to see what's on screen. I have to plug my monitor back in.
This used to work fine under Leopard.
How will I ever watch Mad Men now?

Why don't you click on the Apple icon at the top left of the screen.
Select About This Mac. Click on the info about which version of OS X you have - under the Apple icon - click twice to see your serial number. Use it to determine the model of your Mac Pro on Apple's web site. Inform those who would help you what model Mac Pro you have.

  • Built-in ethernet port not working in unibody Mac Mini

    Hi,
So ever since I acquired this new mac mini I haven't been able to get it to recognize any devices connected via ethernet. I obviously checked the cables and all is good there. I tried connecting it to another mac, and while the other machine was detecting a device (the mac mini) at the other end of the cable, the mac mini kept saying that the cable is unplugged or the device off.
After several days of having the issue I decided to remove the ethernet service from the network preference pane to set it up again but to my surprise, the built-in ethernet option was not available (I only got airport, firewire, bluetooth DUN, VPN, PPPoE and 6 to 4). At this point I tried removing the networkinterfaces.plist file form the system configuration folder in the system preferences folder to no avail. I then tried to zap the PRAM, NVRAM, reset the SMU, SMC and all that kind of things to get the port recognized by the system but no luck.
When I look at the system profile I get these weird results in Ethernet Cards:
    pci14e4,4353:
    Type: Other Network Controller
    Bus: PCI
    Vendor ID: 0x14e4
    Device ID: 0x4353
    Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x106b
    Subsystem ID: 0x0093
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    Link Width: x1
    BSD name: en0
    Kext name: AppleAirPortBrcm43224.kext
    Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm 43224.kext
    Version: 425.16.2
Comparing it to other macs I have It should read "ethernet" rather than that strange pci name on top and the kext name shouldn't read airport but something like AppleIntel and in location it shouldn't direct to the IO80211Family.kext package but rather to the IONetworkingFamily.kext.
So I popped in the system install DVD and fired up System profiler and at that point I didn't even get an "ethernet cards" option in the left side pane. So this is leading me to believe that the hardware is not being recognized at all, so maybe it's damaged. I did replace the HDD with a bigger one and change the RAM modules to bigger ones but I don't think I could have damaged the hardware in these processes, also I don't see how this would affect the ethernet port as it's integrated to Motherboard and didn't messed with it at all (I was very careful, to say the least!).
The last thing to do is reinstalling the system but I don't think it'll help (after seeing that the ethernet port is not even being detected by the install OS) but I need to offload all the data from my internal disk and at the moment I don't have an spare drive to do it.
So, what's the recommendation? A field trip to an Apple Store? Closest one is like 3,000 km from where I am right now, so...
Well, thanks for any pointers, suggestions and help in general.

I do not have any answers for you. Yes it appears to be reading what should be an ethernet card as an AirPort card. Have you played around with trying to install another version of Mac OS X other than the version that shipped with the Mac mini? Apple has long told us that we should not install a version of Mac OS X that was older than the shipping version. With the Mid 2010 Mac mini, the Restore DVD has the only version of Snow Leopard that will work with this Mac mini's specific hardware. At least until Apple releases 10.6.5. If you have installed other versions of Mac OS X, then erasing the HDD and installing the OS from the Restore DVD(s) that shipped with the mini may get you back to the point you need to be.
Unfortunately I think that you voided your Apple Warranty when you installed the different HDD. That was always a question in the past when folks wanted to open the former version of Mac minis and upgrade the RAM. But with the 2009 models folks started reporting here in the Apple Discussions that Apple was informing them that they had voided their warranty by opening their Mac mini. This new model made the RAM user upgradable, but the User Manual specifically states on page 43, 54 and 61 that there are no user serviceable parts in the Mid 2010 Mac mini except the memory.

  • Will old iSight camera work with new Mac mini?

will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini? If so what adapters will I need?

Matthewlopez wrote: will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini?...
Yes (if the old external iSight works.)
Apple's long ago discontinued Firewire External iSights were great webcams, but they are old (as consumer electronics go) and some may have had pretty rough treatment. Even NOS (new old stock) items may have been damaged in storage or handling.
If you have access to an external iSight, you can test it using the suggestions from this page: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html.  To reduce the possibility of conflicts for old Firewire iSights, I suggest you disconnect all other Firewire peripherals until you get your external iSight working with your mini. Then connect other needed items one at a time and test each to determine whether you can use any without conflict.
If you are considering buying an external iSight now, a new webcam (with warranty) may be a better choice. Many available alternatives are listed here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
If you want more examples of external iSight and newer minis, take a look at some of the results of this search for your question.
Matthewlopez wrote: ... If so what adapters will I need?
You will need a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter.  This adapter offers only a Firewire 800 connection.
The Firewire connection on old external iSights is a Firewire 400 connector.  Therefore, you need some way to connect to the FW800 connector on your adapter:
    • To use the FW400 6pin-6pin cable that comes with iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter

  • Remote not working with new Mac Book Pro

Had my 2.16 MBP for 2 days and cannot get the remote to work. The IR is not disabled, but I cannot select the UNPAIR option so I am guessing the remote is not paired with the MBP.
I am pressing the Menu and FFD button, but nothing appears to happen.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what to try next ?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi Mate,
I read this once somewhere hope it helps..
A great way to tell whether your remote control is working or not is to point it at the camera while you have Photo Booth running. The camera somehow picks up the IR signal and translates it into the visible, which I think is hilarious. It works with any IR remote control.
If your remote is eating up batteries that fast, it might have some kind of short circuit. I'd get it replaced.

  • Hp laserjet 1320 not working with new mac

now i'm trying to get my old hp laserjet 1320 to work together with my new computer - but neither the mac is cooperating nor the old laserjet. i've also installed a new hp officejet pro 8600 - this printer/scanner/fax works well, but i also wanted to use my old laserjet until i run out of printing cartrigdes )
    thanks for the help!!!

    Hello nyc213,
It sounds like you are unable to use your LaserJet printer with your computer. I recommend the troubleshooting in the following article named:
OS X Mavericks: Solve printing problems
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14142
    Check the printer
Go to the printer and check the following:
It’s turned on and is displaying normal status lights.
It has paper, and the paper isn’t jammed.
It has enough ink or toner.
    Its cables are properly connected.
If your printer is attached to your computer’s USB port, open System Information, then click USB. If the printer’s name appears in the hardware list but the printer doesn’t work, review the printer’s documentation for further troubleshooting information.
    Check your device’s USB connection
If the printer is on the network, open Printers & Scanners preferences, then add the printer again to create a new printer queue. For instructions, see:
    Set up a printer
Use the best software for your printer
Make sure you have the correct version of your printer’s software (also called its printer driver).
If you’re using a printer that another user is sharing, make sure you’re both using the same version of the printer software. To find out which version you’re using, select the printer in Printers & Scanners preferences, click Options & Supplies, then click General. Note the driver version.
If you’re using a network printer or a printer attached to your Mac, make sure you have the latest version of the software for the printer. If you still have problems, try different printer software for your printer.Change or update printer software
If you still can’t print, reset the printing system.
    Reset the printing system
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • USB to Parallel Cable Adapter not working with New PC and Windows 8.1

With the demise of parallel ports on PCs, I purchased a USB to Parallel cable adapter several years ago.  I used this combination to successfully connect my Apple Laserwriter 16/600PS printer to my HP Pavilion Slimline s7600n PC (running Windows XP, SP3).  I've decided to upgrade, I now have an HP Slimline s5-1020 PC running Windows 8.1.  However, I cannot get the printer to printer properly.  When the print command is executed, the printer spits out page after page of 1-line jibberish at the top of the page.  This continues forever until either the paper runs out or I abort the document by opening the paper drawer.  Only after full shutdown of both printer and computer and reboot of both will the printer clear itself of the corrupted print instruction.
The printer is also connected to an Apple MacIntosh 7200/120 computer via AppleTalk and it prints fine.  Also, I reconnected the printer to my old Slimline s7600n computer and it prints perfectly.  I have to assume that either new PC or OS is the source of the problem.
Any and all help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
You have to go to the maufacturer site to check is there any Windows 8.1 driver for it. I know many cable/adapter vendors stopped to develope from Windows 7.

  • My  Samsung Sync Master 225UW's camera (webcam) won't work with my Mac mini

    Hi,
I need help making my monitor's webcam work with my Mac mini. I have Mac OS X 10.5. When the computer launches the screen turns on, everything's perfect but the webcam will not turn on when I launch Photo Booth or iChat....what should I do?

That camera doesn't work with my mac either (I'm using it right now with a g4 powerbook, but will try again with my new power mac coming in... though I doubt it will make a difference)
The 225UW is specially made for Windows Vista, and I wonder if it needs a mac driver for the camera or something. We may be S.O.L. I knew that was a possibility when I ordered this monitor. Oh well... pay yer money... take yer chances.

  • Does The Apple USB Modem Work With The Mac mini ??????

Just wanted to know if anyone has successfully used the new Apple USB Modem with the Mac mini, is it compatable ????
Thank you for your input on this.
    Mike D.

It says it works with the Mac mini, but does it really? I just received my modem yesterday and could not get it to work with my 1.42 mini - the more expensive one that comes without a dialup modem! I looked carefully at the specs and it appears the Apple USB modem requires Mac OS 10.4.3, not the 10.4.2 that comes with the Mac mini.
Talk about stupid! And the mini docs say it comes with the "latest" version of Tiger. Not! So I can download the upgrade, I guess. IF I could get on the internet! This is extremely annoying. I guess I'll have to download the upgrade on another computer and transfer it somehow. Boy, those Apple guys sure are tech geniuses, aren't they???

Why weren't we told that display mirroring would not work with a Mac older than 12 months?

You were, just not directly. If you go to apple's mountain lion webpage, you'll see this note at the bottom:
    1. AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).

Your nwe iMac is Intel based, which is why the old driver failed/ You could try the driver from IOXperts. They do not mention Intel support, but they do list your camera, and have a free trial.
