Ethernet Bridge and cat 5 cable to extend range?

I am in a building with wi-fi on the upper level, but I'm in the basement.
I have no means of extending the network "down" to me, but I'm trying to figure out a way for me to extend my range "up".
Does anybody know if a Wireless Ethernet Bridge (like the Belkin 802.11g Wireless Ethernet Bridge F5D7330) and a 50 foot ethernet cable could be used to pick up the wi-fi.
I'm thinking that I could possibly run the ethernet cable up the side of the building and place the wireless ethernet bridge on the roof, but I currently have no experience with a wireless bridge.
Thanks,
Luke

If you are running an Ethernet cable why not connect the Ethernet cable directly to the internet on the upper level instead of trying to detect the wireless signal?
Make sure that you use Ethernet cable which is rated for outdoor use and/or you place the cable in the proper conduit (pipe) to withstand the weather and meet any building codes.

  • Use AX as an Ethernet bridge and a WDS relay simutaneously

I searched the forum but didn't find any conclusive answers. So here goes:
I need to connect a computer to my existing wireless network (AX as AP), but it doesn't support wireless whatsoever (Sun workstation). So I want to get another AX to use it as an Ethernet bridge.
My question is, can the AX work as a WDS relay at the same time to extend my existing Airport network?
    Thanks in advance.

The only way it'll work as an Ethernet bridge is if it is part of a WDS network, so you'd be getting the wireless extension anyway.
BTW, it would be a WDS Remote, not a WDS Relay.

  • WDS, Ethernet Bridging and 5GHz.

    Hi,
I have a dual-band Time Capsule as well as a new Airport Extreme. Also, the two laptops to connect to this are new-model MBAs, so I believe all devices I have should be capable to handle 5 GHz, which I would prefer due to the congestion of the 2.4 GHz band by other Wifi networks in the building (about 15 2.4 GHz networks, none 5 GHz visible from my place).
Now, I've read the statement on this forum that, when then connecting multiple Airport units to the same network, the "old" WDS should no longer be used as it doesn't support 5 GHz, instead all but one station should be setup to "extend" the network.
I've tried that, however one of the functionalities that I require to bridge my network back to Ethernet in a place where I need to connect a non-Wifi device (large network printer/scanner/fax) and cannot run a cable.
This works fine when I set the "offsite" station up as a WDS Remote (and setting up WDS is slightly complex, but works fine using the notes from the forum!), but it seems that the Ethernet ports on the remote device are completely dead when setting this up as a Network Extension device.
Now, does anybody know whether there is a way to combine "Bridging TO Ethernet cable" with the benefits of the 5 GHz band?
    Thanks in advance,
    Florian.

Assuming that the Time Capsule (TC) is the router connected to the Internet modem, the proper way to extend the TC's wireless network would be to configure the TC to "Allow this network to be extended" and the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to "Extend a wireless network." This would not only allow for extending both the 2.4 & 5 GHz radios but also enable the AEBSn's Ethernet ports for wired clients. You do NOT want to configure them for the older static WDS.

  • Setting up an older AE to extend an AEn network as a Ethernet bridge

I know that this question has been asked a million times, and I've followed everyone's instructions and no matter what I do, AEn is still amber and no network gets to the AE.
    Here is current setup:
    Airport Utility: 5.5.1
    AEn:
    Firmware version: 7.4.2
    Airport ID: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:66
    2.4 ghz ID: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:65
Wireless mode: Participate in a WDS network
    Wireless network name: Pastel
Allow this network to be extended: unchecked
    Radio mode: 802.11a - 802.11b/g
    Radio channel selection: manual 149/4
    Wireless security WPA/WPA2 personal
    WDS mode: WDS main
    Allow wireless clients: Checked
WDS remotes: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:B8 (the x's are just added for you guys)
    DHCP and NAT enabled
AE to be used as Ethernet bridge (I originally wanted it to extend wireless too, but I can do without that, and disabling wireless clients makes debugging easier):
    Firmware version: 5.7
    Airport ID: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:B8
Wireless mode: Participate in a WDS network
    Wireless network name: Pastel
    Radio mode: 802.11b/g
    Radio channel : 4
    Wireless security WPA/WPA2 personal
    WDS mode: WDS remote
    Allow wireless clients: unchecked
WDS main: I've tested both XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:66
    and XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:65
IP address set in Bridge Mode
Anything unmentioned is left as default.
Airports are next to each other, like right beside each other, but the AEn reports WDS error that no other airports have been detected. I have tried temporarily attaching the two together with an ethernet to no avail. I have internet no problem coming from the AEn, but plugging with Ethernet into the AE, while the utility shows green, I do not properly get assigned a DHCP address, and have no network connectivity.
I hope I've posted enough information, please let me know if you need more and anything I can do to help the situation.

Thanks for the really prompt input Bob, really a spectacular forum.
I've actually already followed the guide to no avail. That said, I have 'resolved' my issue. Unfortunately it won't help anyone else who has this issue because I simply swapped the two devices and everything worked. (Its not an issue of typo as the settings were literally copied and pasted out of notepad). Which is too bad because I wanted to have the Ethernet ports at my hub, but thats life. Mysterious or what? If that means anything to you guys, I'll give and real resolutions a whirl to see what happens.
This is actually the first time I've had difficulty with WDS, and my past experiences were with $30 SMC routers, so I am a bit surprised given the good experience I've had with airports otherwise.

  • WLC ethernet bridge

    Hi,
I've a WLC 2106 and it is running IOS version 7.0.240. I am trying to setup a wireless mesh and used the ethernet bridge port on the MAP to extend the network. The wireless mesh works fine but I can not get the switch to work that is connected to the ethernet port on the MAP.
I'm using two different Access points. I'm using a Air Cap 3502i as the RAP and a Air Lap1142N as the MAP.
The switch port that is connected to the RAP and MAP is configured as the following:
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk native vlan 2
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,20,30,40
The RAP etherbridge port is enable and set to: normal
The MAP etherbridge port is enable and set to: Trunk,
native vlan is set to: 2
    Vlan id 10
    Vlan id 20
The wireless mesh between the RAP and MAP works fine. I can connect a device to the MAP wirelessly and access the network with no problem but I can not get anything to work that connects to the switch that is connected to the MAP ethernet port.
Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I would open a TAC case as this is a bug. I don't recall what code it stopped working but I know it doesn't work also in the v7.3 & v7.4

  • Time Capsule 7.3.1 not working as an ethernet bridge

So my DSL provider AT&T gave me a plane jane router (no wifi) that does NAT and DHCP. My airport express works without flaw and has done so for the last year.
I just bought a time capsule and can't get it to work as an ethernet bridge and the other options are not going to work since the DSL router does all the ip stuff (I'm no networking expert, but I did futz around with the other routing options for time capsule and didn't get anywhere).
When I do attempt to use timecapsule in bridge mode, I get the following error that pops up in a dialog box after the capsule restarts and my laptop connects:
" IP config 192.168.1.64 in use by 00:1f:f3:3c:de:46, DHCP Server 192.168.1.254"
Now, I opened network utility and the "00:1f" device listed isn't my macbook. I've also turned off all the other wireless devices in my house and have done the whole restart everything and reapplying the settings to the timecapsule afresh. Nothing seems to work. Any insight would be really appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, but in my case it's a bit worse. I cannot connect to the TC drive at all from my macbook until I reset the TC. Attempting to connect via finder results in a "Connection Failed" response. After resetting the TC, it will work fine for a while (I don't have any more exact time frame, sorry) then starts failing again.
I have had this TC for 6 months, and after the initial hiccups, it's been working flawlessly. This latest problem started just after upgrading to 7.4.1. I intend on downgrading this evening after work, to see if that will fix the problem and restore the flawless service I had before.

  • AEBS and AExpress N ethernet bridge disconnects when I sleep MBP??

Hi all this is my first post but im a long time mac user having grown up in a mac house.
anyways im an it guy by profession and ive been working at this issue to no avail so I figured I might come on there and see if any of you have experienced this issue
the issue I get is that when I close/sleep my MBP it disconnects the Airport Express ethernet bridge clients
    NETWORK Info
I run a small business from my home thus I have FiOS (yay 20/20) with a block of 13 static ips that i distribute via DHCP and MAC reservation to allow remote access to my network as well as keep things consistent.
I currently run cat6 from my FiOS ONT to my Airport Extreme Base Station, which i use on a strict N only in 5ghz range as my area is flooded with b/g networks but no n networks (yay again).
I recently acquired an N Airport Express to provide a wireless to ethernet bridge thus extending my network to my entertainment center (ps3 xbox etc)
(extra info: im using n here because i found that b/g limits my internet connection speeds to 7-9 mbps where as my connection is capable of 20. On my n speed network I can get my full bandwidth wirelessly, yes I know there is obviously some bandwidth and throughput loss by going wireless but not as much as a b/g network was giving me)
    NETWORK SETTINGS
On my n network I distribute a range of IP addresses from my static block. I have tried a few different dhcp lease times which definitely improved my initial problem which seemed that it would log me out when the key rotated every 20 min. Currently ive bumped that up to 1 day (i know not as secure id like to set it back to 20min but it seems that when it rotates that it logs me out) and haven't had that specific issue revolving around key rotation again. ive tried the WDS, Extend a network and join a network options with no real difference in behavior when I shut my laptop and for example my GF is playing rock-band online she gets disconnected also worth noting that it seems there is an intermittent DNS issue on the express ie cant find time server even though at that time ethernet clients are able to connect and get dns response
Below is my log from my express base station when the disconnect occurs

  • Can I add a second Airport Express using an Ethernet cable to extend my network if the first AX is wirelessly connected to an Xtreme?

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine.  I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building.  There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance.  I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

  • Ethernet wireless bridge and a Laserjet ?

Can I use a lynksys wifi ethernet bridge to connect to my ethernet capable laser jet printer ? I want to print to this printer from within windows (using parallels and bonjour for windows). The bridge will get a IP address just like any other network device.
    Is this possible ?
    Thanks

    Probably.
    Do you own this "bridge"?
    (Bridge meaning router? Switch? Hub?)
Can you give us a make and model number?
What model is your "ethernet capable laser jet"?
(Not sure quite how Parallels handles printing.)
PS, not every network device gets an IP adddress. A consumer-level network 'switch' typically will NOT get an IP. It's like a hub, only more efficient than a hub.

  • I presently have a linksys wifi router, can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal ?

I presently have a linksys wifi router, can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal .i live in a three story home and my linksys is in the basement. I have one cable on the top floor where most of my computers/ipads are.

can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal
Yes, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the Linksys wireless network.

  • How to configure Airport as wireless bridge and wired mode?

    I have two airport extremes.
1)APBN#1 - connected to Cable Modem and local 8port switch
    2) APBN#2 - in wireless bridge mode + Ethernet connected to APBN#1
I would like APBN#2 to act as a wireless bridge to extend my wireless range for my notebooks, but also provide wired ethernet connection to computers connected to it. HOwever, this creates an IP loop.
How would I be able to confiture my APBN#2 to act as BOTH a wireless bridge and ethernet switch without conflict?
    Thanks

I am having related problem I think ... have Cox ISP, a Linksys cable modem and AEBS #1 ... ethernet out of cable modem into AEBS #1 then into netgear 24 port switch (to feed all the ethernet ports in my house). I am unable to have both the AEBS and the wired network function at the same time.
They have been working for a couple years now ... and for some reason recently (past couple days) been problems...
If I get the wired (flowing through the AEBS) to work -- then no DNS is being sent to the wireless. If I get the wireless to work, the wired won't.... AEBS #1 (numbering it because once I it up I have another to extend it....)
    thanks

  • PS4 rendering very "hot" compared to Bridge and LR2- HELP I am stuck

Have done all kinds of tests and still get a difference nearly equal to setting the vibrance to +50 and the saturation to +6 in LR2 to somewhat equal the look of the imported image in PS2.
    Here are the facts:
    I have used Bridge to convert the NEFs  into DNGs using Camera Standard for the D700 with no other changes;
Lightroom 2 and Bridge give the same rederings  in terms of colors and relationships of color to each other.  PS4 however, adds lots of yelow, brightens reds and blows highlights.  I have opened the file three ways in PS4, three attempts through Bridge with Save and convert, another time with Save and option click, another time with Open.  All three methods look equally bad.  I have opened the file directly through PS4, not using Bridge.  Just as bad.
Now here is the interesting part:  when I take spot readings for the image in Bridge and the image in PS4, I get the same numbers.
    For example:  R,G,B for Bridge:  232,205,162   PS4:  232,205,163.
    Should look the same, right?
PS4 Color Settings: Prophoto RGB, Gray gamma 2.2,Dot gain 10%,Convert to working profile, ask for mismatch, Engine: Adobe ACE, all other options not checked.
If I desturate monitor colors by about 15% the image looks closer to Bridge and LR2, but is still more yellow. This is not a good solution for printing reasons, however.
PS4 version 11.0.1     Mac OS/X version: 10.5.8  (not using the latest which is SnowLeopard.)
I have sent the query to Adobe Support, but suspect they'll tell me I don't have support and then there is a time lag, also.
Camera Raw: 5.5.097, PS4 11.01,  LR2: 2.5 with Camera Raw 5.5 in the dialog box
WHAT VARIABLE HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED?

Yes, sorry, you did mention that the Zoom has replaced the Netgear. Regardless, if the Zoom is providing the NAT & DHCP services ... which I would assume that it is by default, the AEBSn should be reconfigured as a bridge.
With AEBSn still configured as a bridge, please try the following:
o Power-down the Zoom, AEBSn, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o While the equipment is powered-down, connect one of your computers directly to any available LAN port on the AEBSn using an Ethernet cable.
o Power-up the Zoom; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up (plug-into power) the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
o Power-up the computer connected by Ethernet.
The computer should now be able to gain Internet access. Please post back your results.

  • Problem with bridge and getting internet on android

My ISP uses a modem/router that's mounted outside of my house. From there it runs into my Linksys E1200. Since it's a router connected to a router I have to use it as an access point. I don't have any cable connected to the internet port in other words.
So I get a cheap LG Adroid for wifi only. The phone hasn't been activated and it doesn't have a service plan. The wifi works on it though as I've connected and used the wifi at businesses that provide it for free.
My desktop is wired with a ethernet cable. My notebook is wireless and it connects and get the internet. So ISP router> Linksys in bridge mode. The cable from the router can be put in any port but it's in a yellow one. My notebook on the other side of the house conected via wifi and getting the internet.
My problem is the phone. No matter what I've tried it connects to the router but I end up getting a "Internet not availible: message shortly after. I didn't know whether to use the Linksys IP info to setup on the phone or the IP of my ISP's router/modem. I've tried to enter both on the phone when modifying the network.
I unplugged everything but my desktop and connected it to the Linksys. Did ipconfig /all. Used a browser to get to the Linksys setup. Set it in bridge mode. Disabled DCHP. All security is disabled., including the WPS that's a feature on my router. Specified my own IP info in the setup tab, using the information I got from the ipconfig. Rehooked up the cables in the back. All is well. I have internet o nthe desktop and the notebook, just not the phone. To get to the Linksys setup page I not longer do the 198.162.1.1. I enter the gateway of my isp's modem/router.
I've entered all of this same information on the phone with a static connection instead of DCHP.Choose a IP that was a few digits higher than the gateway.  I still get the "Internet not availible" that Cisco reports back. On the desktop I pinged the IP I assinged my phone. Packets are recieved. I can aslo acces the Linksys setup page on my phone so it really is connecting to the router.
I'm at my wits end. I've tried different things, too many to remember. If anyone has any idea I would appreciate it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No the phone should get it's IP from your DHCP server.
The IP Address of the Linksys  is just so you can access it and has nothing to do with the network. You turned it into a repeater\switch.
What is your DHCP server's IP Address and DHCP range? This info will basically spell things out.
If you plug a computer into one of the Linksys lan ports it should work normally and so should the wireless devices in that case
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Thunderbolt Ethernet bridge not recognised

I have an original Apple Thunderbolt Ethernet bridge (TEB) for my brand new MBP 13" retina Mid 2014 edition and I am running Yosemite 10.10.2. I connect to the internet via ethernet regularly to play online video games. I recently plugged in my TEB and found that it wasn't connecting me to the internet. I checked network preferences and tried to run diagnostics but in the network preferences it says there is nothing plugged into the Thunderbolt port. However, when I go to system information and under the hardware tab I selected Thunderbolt, with the TEB connected there is a little drop down menu named Thunderbolt bus and under it it says Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. If I remove the TEB, this drop down option is not there, which gives me the impression that the computer is recognising the TEB, but somehow something is wrong with the software that isn't allowing me to connect.
Further information before any of you suggest something simple because I've tried all the simple solutions
I went to the apple store with my TEB and asked them to check if it was working, they confirmed that there is nothing wrong.
I've also used a brand new ethernet cable, one that I know is working to connect to the modem. And obviously my internet is working because otherwise I wouldnt be writing this.
So if anyone knows what I can do to fix this problem please help!
I've used the app EtreCheck and here were the results, doesn't seem like anything is wrong

  • Apple TV as an Ethernet Bridge

I currently have an Airport Extreme (802.11g) router next to my cable modem. In the living room I have an Airport Express which is acting as a music streaming device, as well as an ethernet bridge for my xbox 360. I can't remember how I set it up, something about expanding my airport network. But the airport express shares the wireless internet connection over ethernet so the xbox 360 can access xbox live.
Anyway, I'd like to have my Apple TV do the same thing. I'd like to have my apple TV sync and access the internet wirelessly and share the internet connection over ethernet for the xbox 360 much like the Airport Express has been doing for a year.
    Is this possible?

Apple TV will not do that, it is not a router similar to the Extreme or the Express.
