Ethernet Cable for BT hub

Apparently, I have either a problem with one of my extension sockets, or it is a piece of phone equipment plugged into one extension socket that is draining the other one thus rendering me with a Internet connection speed that is lower than I could get if I plug my hub into the master socket.
Obviously I'm going to try a and plugging the equipment to see if my Internet speeds up. If it doesn't, I decided to move my BT home Hub into the room that houses the master socket. However, this room is probably 40 feet away from where my computer is housed. I know that the maximum recommended length for an ethernet cable is around 100 m so I don't have to worry about this. However, it's still quite a long way so what would you recommend I use for cable, I'm contemplating going for a good quality cable to cut down on any loss that may occur because of the added distance between the computer and a hub

I have 2 x 50 meter ethernet cable joined to make a 100 meter run running from my router in the living room to my office upstairs at the back of my house and haven't noticed any drop in quality or speed,I get my cables from one of the Ebay shops at a reasonable price.

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks
    Niall

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/belkin-firewire-800400-9-pin6-pin-ca ble-2-m66-ft
    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

  • Want to connect MacBook Pro to the internet via ethernet cable for the first time?

I Plugg the cable for Ethernet> Then I type my IP adress> don't know what to type in these blanks:
    Subnet Mask, Router
    What DNS?
I want to plug the cable for Ethernet then see the internet work?

We cannot answer your questions.. and the method looks wrong.. why are you doing it manually.. just use dhcp and see if it works.
There is hardly a modem or router out there that doesn't have dhcp setup for automatic setups.
If it is manual then there is no way we can give you the values..
They are determined 100% by the network you plug the computer into.. and the setting of that network.
Tell us more if you supply modem router.. and ISP info and why it is not working with dhcp we might be able to help further.

  • Does iTunes use wireless music stream if using an Ethernet cable for AE?

    Hello,
I have been having trouble with airtunes for some time now. I've tried lots of different things without much success. I think there might be too many wireless networks in my building and I am getting a lot of interference. So i'm thinking of trying a wired method.
If I plugged an ethernet cable from the computer into the Airport Express (which is then plugged into the stereo), does airtunes still send the music stream wirelessly or would it use the ethernet cable instead?
    Thanks
    WP

    1. Will this work (i.e., add wireless to the office and maintain my existing wireless in my home)? If so, what do I need to do? Specifically, do I need to configure WDS and (if so) does 2Wire support this?
What you are attempting to do is actually called a "roaming" network in Apple terms and not WDS. In a roaming network, AirPort base stations are connected together on the same subnet of an Ethernet network. Each base station is setup as a bridge, but share the same network name (SSID) and encryption (if used). It sounds like it should be possible to setup the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a roaming network. The following is how it would be done with AirPort Extreme Base Stations:
    - Network configuration: DSL/Cable Modem or Internet Router > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] AEBS1 [LAN] > (Ethernet cable) > [LAN] AEBS2 [LAN] > (Ethernet cable) > [LAN] AEBSn (Note: In your case, you will have a single AX, instead of multiple AEBSs.)
    - Setup the second AEBS, as a bridge. (Disable "Distribute IP addresses")
    - For each AEBS in the roaming network:
-- Connect to the same subnet of the Ethernet network
-- Provide a unique Base Station Name
-- The Network Name should be identical
-- If using security, use the same encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc.) and password.
-- Make sure that the channel is set at least three channels apart from the next AEBS.
    2. Assuming I can, can I have that same AX (i.e., the one connected vis-à-vis Ethernet cable) be used for wireless printing in the office while providing wireless internet? Any special configuration to allow that?
    Yes.
    3. If this network desire does not work, is there another set of hardware that I should purchase (i.e., a different wireless DSL modem, Airport Extreme, other???).
The configuration as you planned it should work...but, in case it doesn't, I'd recommend that you replace your current wireless router with an AEBS. You can then get either another AEBS or an AX to create the roaming network.

  • HT204291 Using an ethernet cable for Apple tv

I found that my mirroring was lagging. Would it be possible for me to connect to the Apple tv with an ethernet cable?

I plugged the Apple TV box into my router via ethernet, and voila!  All works now.  I can mirror my desktop just fine.   HBO Go apparently shut off video streaming (FAIL) so I guess I'll watch that stuff on demand or on my laptop.

  • Which ethernet cable for TC

Sorry for the stupid question: I have a bunch of old ethernet cables lying around, but want to make sure I have the fastest one to connect my MacPro Quad 2.66 to my TC. It's only a 6 foot run. What do I need to look for when buying? Cat 5e? A certain mhz? And should it be crossover?
    Thanks.

Gigabit Ethernet operates at a frequency of only 31.25 MHz. Most Category 5e cable I've seen is labeled 350 MHz and is supposedly tested to that frequency.
The TIA standard for twisted pair copper gigabit Ethernet cable only requires a rating of 100 MHz.
You don't need a crossover since all recent Macs and Airports are autosensing.

  • Questions re: Ethernet Cable for AirPlay?

    Hi -
I have a new (tower-style) Airport Extreme connected to my FIOS router, and my wirless Internet connection for all our Macs and iPads is perfect.  However, I'd like to add an Airport Express, with an audio cable to my home theater speakers, in order to stream music.  I've ordered an Airport Express (one of the new models), and would like to know whether there is any reason to connect the Express to the Extreme via an ethernet cable.  Would it gain any network stability or give a better connection?  And if the cable is a good idea, would I connect it to the Airport Express' LAN or WAN connector (note that the Airport Extreme was set up with an ethernet cable connected from it's single WAN connection to the FIOS router)?
Thanks for any information anyone can provide.
    Shelly

would like to know whether there is any reason to connect the Express to the Extreme via an ethernet cable.
A few reasons that come to mind.....
    Stronger connection
    Faster connection
    More reliable connection
Extended wireless coverage in the area near the AirPort Express
And if the cable is a good idea, would I connect it to the Airport Express' LAN or WAN connector
Connect from one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.

  • How do I make make the ethernet cable for Bt Infin...

I have all the required parts, some good cat5e cable, rj11s and a crimper.
Which wires need conecting to which pins to make it work?  The one installed by BT appears to have just 2 wires connected?
The cable I want to make is the one from the master socket face plate to the VDSL modem (RJ11 to RJ11)
    Thanks in advance

The cable that your wanting ISN'T an ethernet cable.
Your correct that the connecting cable only has the centre two pins connected and frankly the colour of the cores doesn't matter, just pick a pair and make sure that they are the same @ each end.
Just a note re Ethernet cables & Cat5e cable...there are 2 recognised ways or wiring (a & b), makes no odds which your use as long as its the same @ both ends [B at one end and B at the other = a crossover cable should it be needed].
For the colour codes just Google Cat5e wiring codes

  • Cable for BT Hub

    Hello,
Sorry, I'm completely clueless when it comes to technical stuff. I need a new cable between my phone socket and my BT Hub but I have no idea what it is called. I bought a cable from Tesco that I thought I could use but the socket doesn't fit into the BT Hub socket. Please could someone advise what I should ask for? Many thanks.

if between router and socket then it is an RJ11 - modem cable

  • Re: NB200 - Automatic plug and play for Ethernet cable

Do you know why I do not have automatic plug and play when I connect an ethernet cable for internet on my NB200?

    Hey mate,
Which automatic configuration you mean exactly?
Normally nothing is plug and play. If you want an Internet connection via Ethernet cable you have configure this port. That means you have to set a static IP address for example or DHCP.

  • Time Capsule as an External Hard Drive + Ethernet Cable question

In reading up on the Time Capsule, it can be used as a router and for storage purposes.
    Some questions:
    1) can the Time Capsule be used just as an external hard drive, not for back up purposes at all? Is there a setting that needs to be checked to make sure that it doesnt back up anything at all.
    2) can I move files from a macbook or pc to the time capsule via an ethernet cable for faster speeds? Do I need a special ethernet cable?
    3) can I also move files from a macbook or pc to the time capsule via wifi if I want, just wondering if it is possible?

    slumpey326 wrote:

    yes.
however, files stored on the TC's disk cannot be backed up using time machine. also, if the drive fails, it will be very difficult to retrieve the data from it.
in other words, you need to find alternatives ways to backing up your data.
Is there a setting that needs to be checked to make sure that it doesnt back up anything at all.
turn time machine off in system preferences > time machine.
    2) can I move files from a macbook or pc to the time capsule via an ethernet cable for faster speeds?
i'm not 100 % sure about a PC but definitely from a Mac.
Do I need a special ethernet cable?
    [Cat6_|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_6cable] will be fine.
    3) can I also move files from a macbook or pc to the time capsule via wifi if I want, just wondering if it is possible?
again, not sure about the PC but yes for the Mac.

  • Time Capsule and Time Machine: How can I force Ethernet Connection for the first backup ?

    Hi,
How can I force the Time Capsule - Time Machine Couple to communicate via an Ethernet cable for the initial backup without changing the wi-fi configuration of the Time Capsule?
I do not want to change the wi-fi configuration of the TC because it appeared that I was not able to restaure it proprerly after a first "ethernet backup".
Please note that I do not want to use my TC to extend my wi-fi network nor create a new one. But, when I disable the wi-fi on the TC, as I want to restaure it, I only can see "expend" or "create a network" options within the wirless config page of AirPort Utlity; "Connect to a network" is not shown in the list!
Thx a lot for your attention,

You MUST change the TC mode to something other than join a wireless network.. because in that mode, TC turns off the ethernet ports.
The join a wireless network is hidden option because apple do not support it and it works poorly.
You can access it by holding down the option key.
You can also save the current settings and restore them after you finish the ethernet backup.
Please note using join means double hop wireless and your TC data speed to the Mac will be extremely slow.. this will also affect your other internet connections and any other computers on the wireless network as it will use most of the capacity for much longer period than directly connecting to the TC.
Basically that is why Apple do not support it.. it is lousy way to work a TC in a network.

  • Cannot connect RJ45 ethernet cable to ethernet port on macbook pro

How do I connect an ethernet cable to the Macbook Pro. I have a standard RJ45 cable but it does not seem to fit in any of the ports. Is there a special ethernet cable for MacBook Pro. If so, is there a connector that connects that cable to the standard RJ45 cable.

There is no special port for Ethernet. You should find the port next to the MagSafe connector. Be sure you orient the cable correctly.
