Ethernet cable internet access only No WiFi in hotel MBA user
Am assuming I need to carry my own Airport Express with my MBA as I am in a hotel that has ethernet cable internet access only - no WIFI? If so, what do I need to know about how to get MBA and Airport Express to "talk" to each other in these types of hotel situations?
Thanks for your assistance
PEM
Hi Elegba,
Curious... did you consider the USB Ethernet adapter for the MacBook Air? A whole lot cheaper of a solution for a hotel without WiFi. Not to mention, I've found (after initially struggling to justify the purchase) that I use mine more than I originally thought.
However, to answer your question. You'll connect the Ethernet to the AirPort Express Base Station and configure it via the AirPort Utility on your MacBook Air. It's very straight-forward and you'll be creating a wireless network. You may need to first get setup with your 'in room' connection, though, I know most hotels have a proxy connection for web access. While you should still be able to setup the Express, it's just something to keep in mind.

For our only internet access we have a 3G wireless modem. I have since purchased a WiFi printer and router to connect all the comptuters to in the house. The PCs have no problem with using both the 3G connection and the WiFi signal at the same time to print, however, the MacBook Pro will not connect to the 3G network and the router, it will drop the internet access from the modem and attempt to connect via WiFi (which has no internet access). Is there a solution that is available to remedy this? I attempted to create an adhoc printer network, however, the macbooks again will not print off of this, only the PCs. And I'm getting a bit frustrated overall with this.
The 3G wireless modem is on one of the PC's correct?
Why don't you pass the Internet through the Ethernet port to the router via Cat5 cable, then have that transmit a Wifi signal that everything else can use, then connect the printer to the router for print sharing?
You would have to turn off the wifi on the comptuer with the 3G modem as it's physically connected to the router and can't connect to the other machines as they are all connected to the router for sharing.
The Mac has the ability to pass, Internet Sharing in the System Preferences.
Do you have software for the Mac to run the 3G modem? -
if only a wired internet connection is available, is there a coverter for my IPAD2 that will allow me to connect to an ethernet cable?
There is no ethernet connection available. If there is ethernet available there should be a wifi router available.
Cheers, Tom
You could use a Travel Router

"No internet access" on Guest Wifi
We upgraded our router the other day, we made a backup as well as a txt copy of the config file for copying in various commands to the new router .
We have a Secure wifi for employees and a Guest wifi for visitors. We have a server doing the DHCP(10.27.131.8) for both the secure (10.27.131.0 network) and for the Guest (10.26.131.0 network). The Secure wifi is working as it should be - the Guest however is not. Visitors can connect and get a valid IP address from the 10.26.131.0 network but have no internet access. Everything else has stayed the same - no changes to the AP's.
Again we copied the config from the old to the new with a few minor changes but nothing that should effect the Guest wifi.
I did an ipconfig after connecting to the Guest Wifi and I can get a correct IP address 10.26.131.214, Default GW: 10.26.131.1.
I enclosed the config from my router is anybody could shed some light,
Thanks in advance.

I also apologize for my late answer.
I appears your ACL 101 that filters traffic entering the Fa0/1.20 is not correctly written to allow DHCP requests to be processed by the router. The attempt has been made - but it is not correct. In particular, check out the second entry in the ACL 101:
access-list 101 permit udp any host 10.27.131.8 eq bootps
It allows all DHCP messages that are already targeted to 10.27.131.8, the DHCP server. However, such targeted DHCP messages may be used by clients only after they know who the DHCP server is in the first place. Until then, the requests are targeted to 255.255.255.255 and sourced from 0.0.0.0. Such packets are not allowed by any entry in the ACL 101 and are therefore dropped even before the DHCP Relay Agent can process them. That would explain why your clients actually cannot obtain IP address via DHCP in VLAN 20.
We need to add the following entry immediately before or after the existing second entry in the ACL 101:
access-list 101 permit udp any host 255.255.255.255 eq bootps
You may accomplish this by the following sequence of commands directly pasted into the global configuration:
ip access-list resequence 101 10 10
ip access-list extended 101
15 permit udp any host 255.255.255.255 eq bootps
end
The first line will cause the individual entries of the ACL 101 to be internally numbered, starting with the sequence number 10 and incrementing by 10 for each subsequent entry. The second line enters the ACL 101, treating it as a named ACL, allowing us to use the extended editing features. Finally, the third line starting with the sequence number 15 will cause the entry to be added between the existing first (seq no 10) and second (seq no 20) entry. It must be entered including the sequence number, otherwise the line will be added at the end of the ACL.
Would you mind trying out this modification? The former corrections with the NAT I have described earlier must be applied as well.
Best regards,

MiFi 5510L Problem Local Internet Access only
Set up the new jetpack 5510L model and when trying to connect to the internet I get Local access only - will not get me online. Any ideas?
First line of defense is the various resets:Level 1 - Power Cycle the device
Level 2 - Remove the SIM card while powered off
Level 3 - Restore the defaults from the button under the back cover
Give each of these a try and check your internet each time. If the problem is temporary then this should clear it up for you. Let us know if you need more help from here and we can try some other troubleshooting steps. We'd have to know what OS your connecting device is running to provide you with specific steps. -
Trying to connect my xbox to the airport express. Have wireless in home and do not have a ethernet point behind tv/xbox. How do I configure the airport express to connect to my wireless network and then the airport express can use its connection via ethernet to connect the xbox to the internet.
Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) a 802.11n model? If it is, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge or ProxySTA. This would allow the AX to join another wireless network and have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients, like the Xbox 360.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. -
No internet access Available from wifi
I am very annoyed that i pay for a service and cannot have access to the internet Using wifi.. "no internet connection available"I have tried it on both my Xperia Z2 and Samsung S5 with no luck.. It is that bad that i'd have to say that i can only use it about 2 percent of the times.. YES 2 PERCENT.. not a typo.. This is bloody ridiculous..I have done a lot of research on the net and it seems to be an Android problem.. Spotify works on my PS4, WII and Laptop but on none of my androids.. The mobile is the main reason i joined/suscribed as a premium member..
No point asking me to try to fix it myself as i already..1.. uninstalled/reinstalled software,2... Turned on/off /on the phone,3... Restored both phones,4... Taken both phones to my mate's house Wifi and5...Used the community service you guys offer and still with the same "No internet issue" Please advise real fix for this issue as i am spending my well earned money on a service that i am having extreme difficulty using... You should also have a phone number for direct contact so that WE can contact you and have all our problems/issues fixed 1 on 1.. Awaiting a genuine responseSame here. Have had this problem since the latest updates (latest one has still not fixed it) and there's no solution provided by spotify people anywhere. This is unbelievable. "no Internet connection" when using spotify on wifi, on my nexus 5, nexus 10 and galaxy s3. when going to cellular data it works fine.

WLC ACL For Internet Access Only
I've implemented Cicso ISE 3495's with the advanced subscription license. I've built my policy sets, and authorization profiles. It all works great! Here's the issue that I'm having. I have internal employees who bring in their own devices (BYOD). I want to allow them onto the secured SSID that I've created, but only want to give them access to the intra/internet. I've created an ACL (EmpInternetOnly) on the WLC. Here are my rules:
I can get to the intranet, with no issue (ACL lines 1-4). I can't get to the internet whatsoever. I see everything falling down to the deny statement. When I remove the deny statement (ACL line 14), and put a permit all, then the internet works with no issue. Am I missing something here? I've researched this topic on several message boards, but can't find an answer. I've tried to run the acl debug, on the controller, but do not see any output when I run it. It might be because I don't understand the proper format of how to set it up. Any and all replies would be much appreciated! Thanks!

WRT54G not working with cable internet access - request for help
Good evening!
At least that's the time when I write this.
I have a PC running Vista 64-bit version.
Until yesterday, I was connected to the internet using my WRT54G and a cable modem. There was a power outage (or blackout) and I lost my internet connection. I was not home when this happened. I got home and found the circuit breaker off. Since then, I can not access the internet anymore when I use the router.
If I connect the computer to the cable model directly, I can access the internet without a problem (hence I'm able to post this).
If I connect the computer to port 1 in the router, and connect the cable modem to the internet port in the router, I am not able to connect to the internet.
I have already:
- updated the firmware to the latest version (it was already installed)
- reset the router pressing the "reset" button for 30 seconds, unplugging it, and reconnecting power still pressing the "reset" button for 30 seconds.
- power cycled the devices
- tested 3 differnet patch cables that I know are good and they work
- reset the modem via a soft-reset remote request sent from the cable operator
None of these options have helped me restore my router's connection to the internet.
I know the router is working because I can print using my wireless printer and I can see my shared drives in the other PC I have connected to it, but none of them are able to connect to the internet!
Does anyone have any additional ideas on how I can fix this, before I go out and buy a new router?
Thanks in advance!
PabloAs you have mentioned in your previous post, that you have resetted your router and you are still able to Print from your Wireless Printer, I Feel that your Router is not getting Resetted properly, whenever you reset your router your router goes to Factory default mode, and it will change the wireless network name to "linksys" and your Network will be unsecured. Press and hold the reset button for 60 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 60 seconds and re-connect the power cable.
Once you reconnect the power to the Linksys router, On your computer Open IE and in the address bar type (http://192.168.1.1) and hit enter, when prompted for username and password, Leave the username blank and in password type "admin" and click Ok. Below the Setup tab you will find MTU, So change it to "Manual" and change the size from 1500 to 1365 and Click on Save Settings. Then Below the Setup Tab you will find the Sub tab "MAC address Clone" click on it and "Enable" and click on "Clone your PC's MAC" and click on Save Settings. Now you can Unplug the Power from Router and Unplug the Power for Modem. Wait for 30 seconds, and 1st connect the Power to your Modem and wait till all the lights goes Stable then you can connect the power to Linksys router and once all the lights are sold. On your computer Open IE and check if you are Online. -
Internet access only available for a few seconds before dying
I've just purchased a new iMac and I'm having problems connecting to the internet. I have a DSL modem router which is configured up and working correctly. I can plug my old PC into it and it works fine, however when I plug it in to my new iMac I have to reset it and then I get about 20 seconds access before it dies. The IP address is still assigned and everything but all traffic seems to stop. If I reset the router again, I'll get another 20 seconds access once it finishes booting. I don't think it's a router issue as I can plug a windows laptop in also and it works fine.
Those settings would appear to be correct, so the computer is getting the IP number from the router.
I tried a ping test against www.apple.com after resetting the router, and it was an unknown host . . . Yes, it gave me nothing either: 100% packet loss; but another www address was OK.
If you enter that router IP number in a browser, do you get a configuration page for the router itself? Does the router need a WEP or WAP password?
Have you also tried, (A) setting up a new Location rather than use the default, "Automatic" or (B) creating a new user account and setting up from there?
What router do you have, by the way? -
Ethernet cabled PC OK .. Wifi Not
We have been seeing a degragation in service for while.
Number 1
So today I set up my PC next to Router and cabled it in. I put my iPad next to the PC ... both within 1m of router.
Clicking on a web site (tried several) the laptop comes up in say 1 second and the iPad takes 10 seconds.
I followed BT Helper and changed WiFi channel but since the iPad is right next to the router, I cannot see interference being the issue.
Number 2
I am not convienced this is purely a WiFi issue as our Sky box is cabled into the BT Router and it takes ages to download TV. I beleive the Broadband connection is dropping and starting. The same happens for laptops, Macs, iPad, etc
Any ideas?OK done the tests as instructed

Disable internet access only for specific time with GPO?
I need to be able to disable web browsing during specific times (night shift for example). I know I can create a GPO policy and set a 'fake proxy' for IE that would blanket kill browsing but I don't want to have that enabled 24/7. Is there any way to do only from like 5pm - 5am.
Or is there a better way to do this? I know I could setup a Squid Server and set time limits through there. Was just curious if it could be done through AD.
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks CommunityOk, I just thought of a way to do it with GPO.Create the gpo to setup the fake proxy setting and also lock out the proxy setting to keep the users from disabling the setting.Setup targeted application of the GPO based on a specific AD group. Depending on if you setup the GPO policy under computer or user you can add either user names to this AD group or add computer names to this group (you could also create a nested group so you are only adding and removing one name from the targeted GPO group). Setup the task scheduler to add and remove names to this gpo application group based on time of day. Understand there will be a delay of up to 2 hours between the time the user is added to this group and the application of the GPO to the target computer. It would appear a bit clunky, but it should work. The squid route would be a bit more...

On my new MacBook Pro when I am connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, Facebook pictures do not load. They show up as white boxes with blue question marks. This also happens on a website editor. But, when I am connected to the internet via Wifi, everything load properly. I mostly use Safari. But I also tried it on Firefox, Mozilla, and Camino. Mac OS X. It's my work computer, so I've only tried it at the office. I have to be connected through the Ethernet cable to access my files and email on the server.
