Ethernet cable used to connect BT Infinity router ...

Any help appreciated on the following.
I'm moving the BT Infinity router (HH3) 10 metres from the Openreach modem and I require a longer Ethernet cable
Do I require a crossover cable?
Should I choose CAT5e or Cat 6
And is a shielded cable recommended?
Thanks,
Iain

Either a Cat5e or Cat6 would do. Cat6 is the newer standard and can carry faster connections. You require a straight through or patch cable not a crossover. The shielding on normal cables is usually sufficient unless you are laying the cable along side electrical cable or appliances.

  • PS3 error: "An Ethernet cable is not connected" with E2000

Problem: My PS3 displays An Ethernet cable is not connected almost immediately after logging in. I am connected through a Linksys E2000 router.  If I reset the cable modem, it will work for 10-15 minutes until it errors out again.  If I plug the PS3 directly into the cable modem, it works fine. I'm really confused.
    1. I do not believe it is the router, as my computer is also connected to the router, and works fine. My Touchpad is connected wirelessly and also works fine.
    2. I do not believe it is the PS3, because it works fine if I plug it directly into the cable modem. I tried switching to wireless and it finds a lot of other signals (including mine), but I have the same problem if I choose wireless.
I first had this problem with a launch PS3 and a Netgear router after almost three years of no problems. This was back in November 2010.  I replaced it with a Linksys E2000 router in January 2011, and a slim PS3 in late September 2011.
I had no problems from January until last weekend.  I have tried to do the DMZ trick, but no luck. I have also tried to set the primary and secondary DNS to 4.2.2.1.
Does anyone have any insight? If I need to buy a new router, I will, but I don't understand because it works for my computer and Touchpad.  Is it something crazy like when November comes, my internet settings get corrupted?

Try using the DHCP reservation feature to give your PS3 a "static " ip outside of the DHCP server range. So something above the range called "IP Address Range". 192.168.1.150 should be good, but you can check to confirm that this address isn't in that range.
Make sure your PS3 is set to obtain the network information automatically, NOT through a custom setting. Also, make sure your PS3 is turned off completely before doing this.
Could you also give us a screenshot of the "signals" tab when you go to 192.168.100.1?
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • PLEASE HELP! ETHERNET CABLE IS NOT CONNECTING PROPERLY WITH FIOS ROUTER

I recently purchased a time capsule to use in conjunction with my mac. When I am prompted to connect the ethernet cable from the lan port on my fios router to the wan port on the tc, the cable will not connect properly to the lan port on the tc. If I connect it from the lan on the fios router to the lan on the tc the green indicator lights up to indicate a connection but this does not help the wan port situation. I am able to locate the network I created from my mac but this tc network is not connected to the internet as indicated by the amber blinking light on the front of the tc. Also since creating this non working tc network, my fios signal is almost non existant! I am new to all of this so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!!

Don't worry about the cable. For now.
Set the TC to bridge mode.. In bridge there is no wan port.. so you can use any port on the TC.
Test with the TC plugged in FIOS.. use in turn all the ports to see if it will work.
Do not change any setting but bridge the TC from default.. ie do not set extend wireless.. that will totally foul it up. Do not use join wireless, that will triple foul it up. Absolute default.. set TC to bridge... plug into the FIOS.. ethernet to any port that the light goes on.
Do a snapshot of the TC setup from airport utility and post.

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • HP Photosmart 7510 - loose connectivity when using Ethernet cable

    Need help!
I have an HP Photosmart 7510 all-in-one printer connected to my home network via wireless.
I have 1 Windows7 laptop which successfully connects to the printer via the home Ethernet network (laptop connected via cat5) - so the overall system appears to be working fine on Windows.
I also have 1 MacMini running OS X 10.7.5 which can ONLY print/scan if the Ethernet connection is UNPLUGGED from the MacMini (thus forcing me to use my very poor and unreliable wireless signal).
As soon as I plug in the Ethernet cable to the MacMini I loose all connectivity to the printer.  I have confirmed the Ethernet cable is good - as it works fine with my Windows7 laptop.
Has anyone figured out why I cannot use the physical Ethernet connection to communicate with the HP Photosmart?
    Thanks!

Just making sure, you're running the Ethernet cable from the printer to the router, then running another cable from the router to the Mac, correct?
Have you added the printer's queue to the Mac once the Ethernet cable is connected, or does it not show up in Print and Scan?

  • Problem for connecting my computer to my wireless router via ethernet cable

I have a wireles router model BEFW11S4. I have three computers connected to the router by wireless. All these connection work well. I have also a computer connected to the same router via an ethernet cable. This connection does not work, I cannot access internet with that computer. What can I do to correct the problem?

First off, you need to ascertain if the network card in the computer that is not working is capable of sending and receiving legitimate packets.
Best thing to do is try and connect this machine directly to your Internet Service Provider modem and see if it works.
If it doesn't, first you need to check if your computer is capable of acquiring an IP address automatically (See below for details).
If it is setup to acquire an IP address automatically, but still does not work you either need to find someone who knows how to test network hardware for you or you could try installing a different network card in your computer.
There are 2 ways a computer can receive an IP address. A typical way is for your router to provide one to the workstation using something called DHCP. The other method requires you to know the exact IP addressing required on your LAN such that your workstation when manually configured with an IP address knows where to send it's packets to get out to the Internet.
To check if the computer that does not work is configured to "automatically" receive an IP address from your router, do the following:
    1. click on Start
    2. click on Control Panel
    3. double-click on Network Connections
    4. right single-click on "Local Area Connection"
    5. click on Properties
    6. Scroll down the list until you see "Internet Protocol (TCPIP)"
    and then double-click that item
    7. Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are checked.
This setting allows the workstation to send a broadcast message looking for a DHCP server which can assign an IP address to the workstation. Your router typically would have a DHCP server configured for providing IP addresses. The typical home-based routers can be configured to run a DHCP server or not. Chances are that your wireless computers are automatically acquiring an IP address from your router and therefore it should work on Ethernet connections as well.
It is possible for something to be not working inside your router that would prevent the DHCP server from distributing IP addresses only on the Ethernet connections. If this is the case you would have to acquire a new router.
There is more that can be looked at, but this is where you need to start.

  • HT4889 Do I connect the two macs with the ethernet cable or do I have to connect both from the ethernet cable to the modem/router

Do I have to connect both macs directly with an ethernet cable without network connection to be able to transfer files/apps from the old to the new as I have tried migrating on the network without success.

They can be connected directly or via an existing network. Turn on File Sharing for the computer that will be sending files.
Using Migration Assistant will work best if the two computers are connected via Firewire cable. This assumes both computers have Firewire ports.

  • My web pages aren't loading when connected to the internet through Ethernet cable?

Yesterday my web pages stopped loading on Safari. I tried loading them on google chrome and had the same problem. I then deleted all saved web site data and reset Safari but this still didn't solve the problem. Finally I restarted with safe mode, where the web pages loaded, but slowly, however when I restarted normally the web pages still weren't loading or partially loading. To test whether this was my computer or the ethernet cable I was connected to, I connected to the wifi at my university, where the web pages loaded perfectly. Plus, when connected to the ethernet cable I could Skype, use Spotify etc., it is just the web pages that are causing a problem. Any suggestions how I can fix this? Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Ethernet cable doesn't appear connected?

Over the last few days I have had an intermittnet difficulty conencting to thr Internet.
I discovered that although it's physically plugged in, the ethernet cable isn't - the System Network reports, 'The cable for the Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in'.
I changed th cable and find it does work okay on a differnet mac. Somehow the physical connection, which looks okay, seems not to be working.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong and what options I have for a fix?
Would an ethernet card provide a viable alternative ethernet connector?
    Thanks

    Hi Richard,
I had the same problem as you today. My network status in network showed that my ethernet cable was not connected as well. I did some troubleshooting and my Dell was working ok, my G4 laptop & MBP was working as well because I had everthing hooked up via a router and a DSL modem.
Come to find out, somehow my settings were changed without my knowledge in network. What I did was to change was settings back under network to built in Ethernet. Under TCP/IP tab, I changed the setting to Using DHCP and under PPPoE tab, turn off connect using PPPoe, do this first. After resetting these settings I checked show: network status and everything works like before. It wasn't my Ethernet cable after all. I hope this helps

i have att u verse modem and it wi fi was not working. So i got net gear wi fi  and connected to att modem .  i connected my apple TV via Ethernet cable to att uverse modem . i did not want slow down my wi fi speed.  My Apple phone is on Netgear wifi .Now airplay is not working .

Make sure that the Att Modem goes to the netgear router via ethernet cable. Then connect your Apple Tv with a ethernet cable to the back of the net gear router. Airplay wants it to both be connected to the same device, usually.

  • What is the best ethernet cable to connect a macbook pro to a wall jack?

Hey everyone, I have a 2012 macbook pro and next year for college I will need an ethernet cable for my dorm room. The only info my schools gives me about what cord to get is, "you will need is a standard (straight-through) Ethernet cable to connect the computer/device to wall jack." So my question to you all is, what is the best one that I can purchase? Thanks-Kevin.

Go to Best Buy, tell them you need to connect a computer to a wall jack.  Most of the cables out there are the correct ones (literally ... 95% of the ones in the store are) and you need to ask for the corss-over cables used to connect routers to briges (do not ask ... really, do not ask).
Do not pay top dollar for it.  I have a rag-tag fleet of cables in various stages or repair, but they mostly all work.

I have a WRE54G Range Expander that is currently operating in a wireless mode over an encrypted network. The signal is very weak. so what i want to do is to run an ethernet cable from the router to the WRE54G Range Expander which would allow me to move the WRE54G closer to a wireless laptop (and thereby strengthen the wireless signal). Question, can i simply run the cable from the router to the WRE54G or do i have to configure the WRE54G first?

I don't think you can use the ethernet cable connector to connect the wre54g to a router to extend the signal strength.
it might be worth looking at some of the wireless access points or even a older router such as an wrt54g which can be connected via
ethernet cable to your router and will then function as a access point.  Your wre54g could then be used to fill in any remaining dead spots however since the wre54g is a repeater your throughput will be roughly 50% of the the devices max. speed.

  • Connecting to Wireless Router/Modem/Internet

Need help connecting my HP Desktop to our wireless internet at home.  Tried restarting both computer and router/modem and nothing happened. Still cannot find any networks in my area...says windows cannot find any networks and when I try to have windows "tell me why" it cannot because I do not have internet connection.
I am not far from my wireless router, in the same room. Do not want to have to purchase an ethernet cable unless that is the LAST possible option.  Other devices are not as old (this warranty expired 09/2010) and can find/connect no problem.
    Help!?!

    Hi:
I take it your desktop is connected to the router by an ethernet cable?
If so, connect it directly to your cable modem using the ethernet cable from the modem to the router.
If it connects, and you have internet, then put it back originally and connect the ethernet cable to a different port on the router.
If it doesn't work, then I would have to presume that the ports on your router are dead or the ethernet cable is bad.
If the PC does not connect to the internet from the PC directly to the cable modem using the known good ethernet cable, then the onboard ethernet adapter died on you.
