Ethernet card disappears after SP3 install (T60 1951-45G)

Hi!
I updated my Windows XP to Service Pack 3 yesterday and now it seems my ethernet card has disappeared. i.e. it acts at it has been disabled in the BIOS (not showing up in device manager etc.). I've tried entering BIOS, hiding it, booting, restart, enable in BIOS and new boot but no luck. In another thread I saw people complaining about broken MS update and that a clean install might resolve the problem.
My question is if anyone else have had the same experience and if it is solvable without a clean install of a streamlined SP3.
My machine is a T60 1951-45G.
Everything else seems to run just fine by the way, but I'll post back if I find additional problems.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

There are reports of SP3 breaking LAN/WAN connectivity on many laptops (TechNet, MSFN, MS forums). Not quite certain what the resolution is at this point, and not quite certain whether a streamlined SP3 fresh install would be a fix for the issue. For some, SP3 disables WAN completely, while for others the issue is with LAN. It seems certain "newer" drivers are the culprit.
Before doing something drastic, try re-installing the LAN drivers from Lenovo to see if that fixes it, otherwise you may just have to revert back to SP2 (nothing wrong with it on an existing machine that otherwise runs without issues). SP3, afterall, is particularly a cumulative update (albeit with some new "features"), so really there's no great reason to update a working and updated XP-SP2 system with this new service pack.
On a side note, be sure to check if KB941644 was inadvertently installed as part of the update - it's a "hotfix" that is known to cause a number of connectivity issues (unresolvable).
You can check here (MS XP issues) to see if there is a solution to your issue.
Hope this clears things up

I've purchased an app and it shows up in my iTunes. But when I download it to my phone, it disappears after its installed. Why is this?

Is the app checked in the Apps tab of iTunes?  That's how you tell iTunes whether you want the app on your phone or not.
Otherwise, check the very last screen on the phone.

  • Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows XP after SP3 installed?

I accidentally installed SP3 on my Boot Camp Windows XP installation, and now BC update 2.1 will not install (fails). I currently have BC 2.0 running.
Is there any way to get BC 2.1 to install AFTER SP3 has already been installed? Can I roll back SP3?

Well, I had similar issues, at least, in that I had not installed the update before SP3, actually, I wasn't even aware of the update until today when I started hunting for a driver update for my graphx and soundboard, since some games that used to be stable were crashing on me all the time.
As I actually have a licensed OEM version of XP on my bootcamped partition, re-installing it may cause me to have to call to MS to even be able to activate and I really didn't feel like doing that...
What I found out is that you can unpack the .exe file using 7Zip (and probably other similar tools) which yields two new .exe files, one of which with almost the same name, unpack that one too and you should end up with a directory named "BootCamp20ToBootCamp205" containing a bunch of files that start with "binary.". Figure out which ones are important for you (for instance, I needed Binary.Nvidiamobile_XPBin for my MBP) and add the .exe extension to the file-names, run them and follow the instructions.
This will give you at least a partial update for those components that are causing problems. Now all we have to do is wait until Apple makes an SP3 compatible installer-bundle so we don't have to go through this crap by ourselves...

  • "On my Mac" folder including all my subfolders in Mail have disappeared after Yosemite install! HELP!

"On my Mac" folder including all my subfolders in Mail have disappeared after OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2 install! What should I do?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • E and F drives disappear after I install iTunes and Quick Time

Whenever I install iTunes/Quick Time on my computer, my E and F drives "disappear" and I have no way of accessing them or playing CDs/DVDs. The only way I know how to get them back is to restore my computer to an earlier date. When I do that, I no longer have iTunes/Quick Time on my computer. My computer is an HP Pentium 4 with Windows XP.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? It drives me crazy and I can't update my iPod Shuffle very often because of what I have to go through to get my drives back when I'm done. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

First since you have done restores, you need to goto microsofts windows update site and update windows. Then goto the PC makers site and install all updates for your model, especailly BIOs IDE controller and CD/DVD ROM updates.
    After that install itunes.
Then rightclick "My COmputer" hit Manage>Device manager and see if theres a "Code 41" error message showing beside your CD DVD Drives

  • Accounts disappeared after re-installing Lion

    Hello,
After re-installing Lion, my login accounts disappeared.
I can only see the Guest account.
However, when I boot with Windows, I can see the directories of my accounts.
Currently, I can't login Mac OS.
    Any advise is welcomed.

Did you eerase and re-install, then migrate?

Have you looked in /Users to see if a new account was created there?

  • IWeb 1.1.1 templates disappeared after re-install

The problem started after I used the official Mac OS disc to install the developers tools (X11 and XCode to be specific). To install these tools, the disc wants to 'upgrade' my Mac OS X.
Before the install/upgrade, my iWeb has all the new 1.1.1 style templates, plus the blank pages. After the install, all of these disappeared. Less styles, no blank pages. I know I'm not dreaming this because I created a web site using a style template that has now disappeared.
I tried re-installing iWeb. I checked it's 1.1.1. I tried upgrade (but it tells me it's the latest version). What can I do to get the templates back?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Delete iWeb Receipt packages:
    go here: /Library/Receipts/
reinstall iWeb 1.0, then upgrade to iWeb 1.1.1

  • Files on our server disappeared after CC install

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to retrieve two folders that were deleted from our server after I installed full Creative Could suite on the iMac I use (designer) and InCopy on four editor computers (two PCs, two iMacs). The Macs are running Yosemite and the PCs Windows 7.
I now see from the discussion boards that this has happened in the past, but I hope to find out...
    1. Is there a way to recover the files via Adobe?
    2. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again?
The folders in question were named "Admin" and "Archives," so I suspect the problem was that Adobe had a conflict with the directory names. But since Admin stored our contracts and Archives had the past 5 years of our publication draft files, this is a big deal. (And wouldn't you know we discovered this morning that our backup had been failing for the past 2 weeks but no one told us. Grrr!)
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

So embarrassed. Talked to Adobe support on the phone and then to our staff. It seems someone here DID get several pop-ups asking if it was okay to delete those folders and she assumed she should say Yes. At least the missing files affect her more than the rest of us... Needless to say, I have now turned off the file sync preference on everyone's computer!

  • Wired ethernet network disappears after upgrading to Yosemite

I am a lone iMac on a Windows network, but have connected through ethernet without a problem for years. Since upgrading to Yosemite, however, my network has disappeared. My ethernet is connected, my IP address is the same as before (assigned by DHCP) and I have made no changes to any other settings. The only difference now is that my mapped network drives cannot connect and in Finder, when I click on NETWORK and SERVERS, there is nothing there.
The company IT guy is a Certified Microsoft dude and he swears nothing has been changed in the network. It must be the upgrade.
What has Yosemite changed? (The Firewall is off.)

    Found a fix
When trying to fix a wake failure, I simultanuously fixed the issue with network drives. It is connected to the Preferences.
Here is how I could solve the problems:
Press command+shift+c - > Macintosh HD - > Library - > Preferences -> Drag SystemConfiguration on desktop, it's going to make a copy of it (May ask for password, then delete it from the Preferences (which is the initial folder). Shut down, then do a PRAM Reset. If you don't know how to do that :
After you shut down the computer, locate the option, command, P and R from your keyboard. Press the power button to turn it on and quickly press all four buttons before hearing the first 'power up sound'. Keep them pressend until you hear a second 'power up sound'.

  • Mail in On My Mac disappeared after Mavericks install

Yesterday, after making a complete SuperDuper backup, I installed Mavericks on my lovely bride’s MacBook Pro Retina (Mountain Lion).
Everything went smoothly, and all of her various email archives in On My Mac subfolders appeared and were readable.
She decided to clean up those old email folders. I created a new mailbox named Archive at the top On My Mac level. Throughout the afternoon, she dragged the various On My Mac subfolders with old mail into the new Archive folder. She stepped away for a few hours, returned to continue the archive process - and the new Archive folder had disappeared. The MBP had not been shut down (and still has not).
I checked Library>Mail. Right at the top, there’s a folder marked “Mail Lost + Found” with lots of .mbox content. Just below that is the expected folder marked “V2” with the bulk of the expected mail components. Under its “Mailboxes” folder, the very first .mbox is “Archive.” All the subfolders she had dragged to that folder yesterday do appear in the “Archive” .mbox.
I hope someone will field a few questions, please.
    1. Why would the new Archive folder at the top level of On My Mac disappear?
    2. What should I do next? I’m concerned that restarting may wipe out the Archive mailbox and its contents, but I’ve read that a restart sometimes corrects Mavericks Mail problems.
    3. Assuming I can get her Archive folder visible again, is she likely to run into the same problem if she continues to drag the remaining 10-15 subfolders into the Archive folder?
    4. What, if anything, should I do about the .mbox material in the “Mail Lost + Found” folder? At least some of it appears to be duplicates of the subfolders in the Archive folder.
    5. Is there a better, more stable archive solution for all this mail? It spans years, multiple IMAP and AOL accounts, and is - or was - neatly organized in subfolders by topic in Mail. Would Mail Steward be able to import this mail, keep the mail organized, and be as searchable as the Mail app? Would it be a good solution to import and reconcile the material in the “Mail Lost + Found” folder? Again, I do have her full Mountain Lion system, including all the Mail, on a bootable SuperDuper drive If that might help create an archive outside of Mail app.
    Thanks!

Hi Eric. Thanks for your response.
    1. All the non-archived sub-folders already appeared under “On My Mac,” so they weren't hidden.
    2. A restart helped, in fact. I first made a copy of the entire Library>Mail folder so I would still have all the .mbox content. Upon restart, Mail automatically created its own Archive. Fortunately, it contained all the subfolders in the manually created Archive mailbox that had disappeared. Apple apparently reserves the term "Archive" for its own use in Mail. I found another thread that arrives at the same conclusion and suggests a fix for a related problem: Re: Deleted my 'On my Mac' folder in Archived mail after Mountain Lion OS X update - all mail lost - how to retrieve?
    3. I believe the answer to #3 is yes; she'll need to drag her non-archived subfolders to Apple's newly created Archive from now on.
    4. I copied them along with the Library>Mail folder, so I'll have them if I need them.
    Thanks again for your suggestions.

However, I can't run these commands after the laptop wakes up from sleep since it no longer sees the ethernet interface.
I am thoroughly confused. Please help me.

It seems to be fixed after the kernel update. On an related note, I've switched from using dhcpcd to netctl. I've enabled netctl to automatically connect to the network using:
    # systemctl enable [email protected]
    # systemctl enable [email protected]
So when I check for the status of the ethernet profile, I get told that's it's inactive.
    #netctl status ethernet-dhcp

    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]; static)
    Active: inactive (dead)
    Docs: man:netctl.profile(5)
But I turned off the wireless, so I must be connected to the ethernet, So how do I know which profile I'm connected to?

  • Airport Card Disappeared After Turning Airport Off

I successfully used my MacBook Pro to connect wirelessly to the 'net for 2 hours, then turned Airport off for security purposes. I came home and tried several times -- unsuccessfully -- to turn Airport back on (to use my home Airport Express.) The wireless transmitter was functioning, as established by a successful connection by my iPhone. I rebooted and attempted to turn it on several times -- no joy. I tried removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist and restarting, and the menubar icon (and About This Mac - More Info) claim that no Airport Card is installed. It seems unlikely that the card would die just because I turned it off. Any ideas?

What Mac are you referring to? (Part of your info at the bottom should at least say what model). Turning it off for security purposes? In any case check System Profiler>Network>Airport Card and see if it shows up there. You might want to post in your Mac model specific forum area.
