Ethernet Card for PowerMac 5500/225

I've an old PowerMac still gathering dust and since I'm connected to a DSL line with a wireless router I thought I'd take advantage of the 4 wired Ethernet ports at the back and wire my Mac up to the Net (you know, the old fasioned way with some Cat 5).
This will mean bypassing the old dial-up modem (built in) by installing an Ethernet card. I imagine these now cost pennies, and can be bought on eBay, but which make and model will work best (or work at all)?
Thanks in advance for any help that's forthcoming...
PowerMac 5500/225 Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier System 8.0

Many of the 5500s shipped with a Comm II slot RJ-45 Ethernet card in the leftmost (from the operator position) position [that's rightmost if you have good access to look directly at the backpanel.]
Alas, some of them did not. If you want to install one there, you will need a Comm II slot (not to be confused with a Comm slot) Ethernet card. They are readily available from used Mac dealers, and can be had on eBay for under US$20.
If and only if you already have the right-angle PCI slot adapter board in place, you can also use a PCI slot card, but beware -- many of the manufacturers are either no longer in business, or cannot supply Mac drivers. So if you buy a Brand other than Apple, be sure you are getting the Drivers with the card.

    HI,
Feliks is right. You can also buy a USB LAN Card. In my opinion they are still cheaper!

  • Restore software for powermac 5500

I managed to come across a working powermac 5500 with the tv tuner and such. however, due to the unit coming from a school system, the software for the tv tuner and cd player have been removed. does anyone know of anywhere to purchase a restore cd (besides ebay...) or how i could go about wiping the drive and putting on a fresh install of os 8?
    thanks

The various versions of Apple's Video, TV/Video, and TV/FM Systems are listed in this archived TIL article. Originally written in 1995, this article was updated in 2000, but the newer Power Macintosh 5500 and 6500 (circa 1997) models that should have been added to the list were overlooked. This TIL article is useful reading, if you run into problems with the TV tuner not being recognized. If the memory is maxed out at 128 MBs (5-volt, 168-pin EDO DRAM with 1K or 2K refresh rate), I'd recommend installing OS 8.5/8.5.1, which can be updated to OS 8.6 via download. OS 8.6 supports installation of a USB 1.1 PCI card, which provides a variety of printer options. If you merely want to use it for TV viewing, I'd recommend going with OS 8.1 and not 8.0, because OS 8.1 introduced support for "Mac OS Extended" (HFS+) formatting, which is a must if you end up installing a larger hard drive. For what it's worth, here's the complete "Apple TV/Video System" package listed at eBay.

  • Is there a PCMCIA Ethernet card for Powerbook G4 OS X 10.4.8 ?

My ethernet port on my Powerbook G4 is damaged and can no longer be used. I looked into getting it repaired but that apparently requires replacing the entire system board at considerable cost. Rather than take that route, I was hoping to find a PCMCIA card with an Ethernet port but I cannot seem to find any that will work with OS X 10.4.x.
Does anyone know of such a card ?
    Thanks for your help !

    How old is your Powerbook?
A Mac older than 4 years old may need its clock battery replaced by an authorized service center. The clock battery dying can cause certain ports to malfunction as well. If it is under 4 years old and no surges broke the port, try zapping your PRAM, it may solve the problem once and for all:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n2238
If it is under AppleCare, there may be no cost at all. Any Mac under a year old is under AppleCare.
Also replacing the system board can be cheaper than from Apple directly if you take it to one of these places:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
In addition, if the port got burnt out by a storm surge or power surge your home/apartment insurance or credit card company you purchased the machine with may pay for the damage. So check each of those sources if you can't find an appropriate card.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ lists a variety of upgrade cards in their database, and may have some ethernet cards you can look at.
By the way, the fact that port is broke suggests the possibility that any other system difficulty you are having may also be related to logicboard issue in anycase, so replacing the logicboard is a good idea if you are noticing other issues.

    So, these guys have nothing?
    http://www.welovemacs.com/net-mpc-100.html
    (MacSense PCMCIA 10/100 Ethernet Card)
This is one of the first things I found when I Googled before posting my original question.
But if you look towards the top of the page at this link under
System Requirements, you will see the following :
Supports Mac OS 7.5.3 and above (Excluding OSX support) G3 PowerBooks and above are not supported.
So, for my needs, yes, they have nothing.

  • An old PowerMac 5500/225

I have an old PowerMac 5500. I cannot access the information stored on the hard drive because the computer cannot find the start up information when I turn it on. I get a floppy disk with a ? mark flashing inside when I try. I do not need the computer for every day use, but there is information on the hard drive that I would like to retrieve. Does anyone know what I could do that wouldn't involve putting a lot of money in it? I asked about it at our local Apple store, but they said it would probably take quite a bit of money for them to do it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I asked about it at our local Apple store,..
If your local Apple store is anything like the ones I know, the folks there will have no idea about macs older than the last model!
The stock drive in this model was an ATA/IDE 2 gB hard drive.
You have at least two options. The easiest and the least expensive is to find a local store - not Apple - that will transfer the files from the drive to a CD or DVD. all you need to do is to extract the drive from the 5500. In Toronto, this type of service costs about $20.
Alternatively, you can buy an external hard drive enclosure, install the 5500's drive in it, and connect the enclosure to your current mac. (It could be a USB or Firewire enclosure.) You can then copy files from the external drive to your new mac.
The most difficult task is to open the 5500 and extract the drive. If you decide to go this route, post back - preferably in the area devoted to older Macs (link provided by DaddyPaycheck, above), and we can take you through the steps.

  • NAT / cant select my external Ethernet Card (for use with PPPoE)

Hi i'm experiencing difficultys in setting up my server with a public IP adress on my external ethernetcard through PPPoe (xDSL). This setting is described as a sample setup in "ServerAdministrationv10.5.pdf" The following problems com up:
    - When i try to settup trough Server Assistant and i come to Network settings both (external (WAN)& internal (LAN)) Ethernetcards show up. As an necessery information there is asked for "PPPoE Servicename" (besides accountname and password). My ISP doesnt require a PPPoE Service name and when i query (?) what is asked for Server Assistant tells me that except i get the information from my ISP i have to leave the field blank. Now, i cant continue with the setup when leaving the field blank . The information is required. When i just supply some information and continue with setup the setup ends with a long pause and an errormessage.
    - Second try, after initial clean installation i Setup the server again localy with the default Serverassistant. When asked to post IP-Adress and Subnetmask for the first listed Ethernetcard i just leafe it with DHCP and continue. After initial Setup is complete i try to reconfigure the external (WAN) Ethernetcard with PPPoE. By doing that(in Systemettings / Networksettings) a get something like a new virtual Interface on my External EthernetCard. I enter the necessary information (accountname, password and leave the field for "PPPoE Servicename" blank. I connect to my ISP and get a perfect connection. No problem to brouse the Web or make FTP connection.
Now when i continue to finish the setup of my new leopard-server i'm asked to select the external Ethernetcardin NAT. Unfortunally i have know three Ethernetinterfaces (External with DHCP, External with PPPoE and the internal one for my LAN). The 2 externel EthernetInterfeces have both the same Name (in NAT)
and somehow i cant select the one where i have setup my PPPoE.
Now, i go back to Networksettings and delete the initial Externalcardsetting (leaving with only my working PPPoE setting on the External Ethernetinterface). As the result of this manipulation i cant select the external Ethernetinterface in NAT anymore. Only the internal (LAN) Ethernetinterface shows up.
Can anybody help me with to above discribed Problem? Somehow i have to be able to select my working PPPoE Setting (on my external Ethernetinterface) in NAT.

I have this exact problem on my new Intel Xserve. During setup I configure ethernet 1 with a manual IP address and try to set up ethernet 2 for PPPoE (it will connect to my ISP via the ADSL modem/bridge) but despite the help screen saying do NOT type anything in PPPoE Service Name unless requested to do so by the ISP (they don't), if I leave it blank it complains because that field is empty and returns to the same screen.
This brings the entire installation to a halt. Seems to me like it's a big bug - I cannot see any way around it. Someone please tell me I'm being stupid here and the solution is obvious:-)

  • Theme on memory card for Nokia 5500

    Hello!
I got a problem with the nokia 5500. On the memory card are two themes that I would like to use, but the size of the memory card is to little(64MB) for me to use it normally. The problem is that I can't move the themes from the memory card to the telephone memory on the phone, and when I check it in both PC Suite and Filexchange modus(not sure what it's called in english, but it's one of the three options you get when you insert the data-cable) I can't see any of the two that are on the memory card(unless they got some special name, they are onle called Theme 2 and 3 on the phone). What can I do to move them, or are they locked to the memory card?
    Regards,
    Thomas

is they default themses present on memory card???
If no then remove themses from memory card and reintsall them in phone memory from their source sis file///

Look, whats the bit with using PCI, when the PowerMac G5 is already setup for aninternal Airport card? Just look for the card holder and the antenna wire - they're towards the front of the case on the Logic board. If they're there, all you'll need is the small card and the "T" type WiFi antenna to plug in the back. see this EBay sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/Airport-Card-and-Antenna-Powermac-G5-/230520457064?pt=LHDefaultDomain_0&hash=item35ac170768#ht_500wt994

  • Core Image Cards for Powermac G4 Dual MDD FW800

Hello there Gentlemen, currently running my Dual G4 with a ATI Pro Radeon 9000. This card does NOT Support Core Image. i need however ADC for

that does core image and will drive my Cinema display?
    cheers
    sir double null

    Hey null,
looks like we have close to the same machine. I have the 9000 card in my machine also and recently purchased the ATI 9800 which is supposed to be a great card. Unfortunately, it isn't working for me yet. I don't know if the problem is just my computer or something else. I have an open thread just two below yours:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=264933&tstart=0
Here's the link for graphics cards that support core image..
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301347
I don't see the 9800 listed in this list? But I could have sworn it was on the list a couple months ago, at least the 9800 was in order to run Motion. It's so completely frustrating.
Post back if you get a video card working and what it is.

  • Which WiFi card for: PowerMac G5 Tower, 1.8 Ghz DP, running OS 10.5.8?

Sorry, I couldn't find an answer to this on the forum and the PDFs ref where the card WOULD fit didn't resemble the inside of the Mac I have
It's an ex-work machine that I'd like to make Wifi for a non-techie friend (already have DLink router for existing PC etc) Which wireless card do I need and which is better? I've been told about USB dongles, Airport Extreme and PCI antenna cards. All very confusing. Basically it needs to be reliable for the non-techie owner , so am not keen to get a cheapo card that will need lots of setting up. Plug 'n' play would be good.
I think the Mac is 2004 vintage and is definitely G5, 1.8 Ghz Dual Processor. Any help asap would be appreciated as I've got to get a card and install it all by the weekend.
    Many thanks,
    Andy

Hi Andrew, Not sure which card, but it may be easier or even cheaper with some of these alternatives...

  • ML-Ethernet Cards for the 15454

    Hi
The ML series cards have two POS interfaces. Would you know whether it is possible to use POS sub-interfaces and map each one to a separate SDH circuit to create a hub and spoke network?
    Cheers,
    Phil

Hi Phil, no it's not possible. Unfortunately the ML series can have only two POS connections to SDH.
Since Rel. 8.5 there is a new ML-MR (ML Multirate Card) with 10 GigE Ports. But this card is only P2P for EPL services. Maybe this card could help you in your design. The card is very new and the SW feature set is very small at this time.
    Cheers

  • Sound Card for PowerMAC G4?

I bought my MAC from my school librbry when they upgraded all the computers to G5's and iMAC's and when i got my G4, the system was pretty bare. I really want to upgrade it and use it as my main computer. I cant find a sound card compatable with it though. As of now there isnt even a headphone jack on it, all my sound comes from the one speaker on the case. So if anyone knows of a soundcard for the system i would really appreciate it if you could let me know what kind i need to get. also if you know a video card that works with my MAC, i need one of those still too.

The Audiophile Card is nice for music work, but it does require massaging with the drivers. I would not recommend it if you are looking for something plug and play.
M-Audio's Revolution 5.1 is for folks who want surround sound, and their Delta cards are even higher-end musician cards.

  • Any Open GL 2.0 cards for PowerMac G5?

Are there any OpenGL 2.0 compliant cards available for the Power Mac G5's AGP slot?

After Effects CS3 (AE 8.0) has OpenGL support disabled on the Mac. That might explain why you're being told your card doesn't support OpenGL.
Reportedly, there's an AE 8.0.1 update available only through the Adobe Updater program that re-enables OpenGL on AE CS3 for us Mac users.
