Ethernet Connection and Receive Airtunes?

Hi
Here is my set up:
- iMac connected wirelessly (g) to router
- router connected by ethernet (via Homeplugs) to Apple TV
My problem:
I want to keep the ethernet connection to the Apple TV because syncing is quicker (I guess the distance between the router and the Apple TV is too long to be able to sync effectively wirelessly). However, I also want to be able to use the Apple TV as an airtunes speaker from my iMac. This doesn't seem to work. Is the fact that the ethernet cable is plugged into the back of the Apple TV stopping it from receiving the signal? Can I force the signal to go to the router and then down the ethernet cable?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Spencer

The problem is not the ethernet and wifi mix, you should be able to use the tv as airtunes speakers. I'd take a look at your network settings as a possible cause.

  • Solution for Apple TV 2, Xfinity router, Ethernet connection and Home Sharing

    I have read over the past week the problems people have been having configuring their Apple TV and Home Sharing. I was experiencing the same issues as others....until tonight. I finally got it to work with an Ethernet connection. Previously, I was only able to get it to work via wifi and home sharing would drop after awhile.
    1) Xfinity router settings. Like others I was suspicious if the Xfinity router was causing the issues because of the separation between wifi network and Ethernet network. It's not the router problem. I disabled the firewall. Enabled port forwarding. Gave a static IP address to the Apple TV. Added forwarding of ports
       123 TCP
        3689 UDP (all other support says this should be TCP but searched through and found a thread that suggested changing to UDP...this was the key)
        5353 UDP
        80 TCP
        443 TCP
        53 TCP
    DMZ is off
    Device discovery is disabled
    Port triggering is disabled.
    The wifi is setup and functional using DHCP. Lease time is 1 week.
    RESET ROUTER AFTER ENTERING CONFIGURATION.
    2) Mac computer. As of this posting the latest version of iTunes installed. Latest Safari version. All programs updated. Turned on Home Sharing. Turned off firewall. Gave Mac a static IP address. Set Mac for hard drive to never sleep. Set monitor to sleep after 15 minutes. Set date and time to automatically find based upon time zone. ( Apple TV needs to be set to the same time zone as computer and set to manual). Enabled file sharing amongst users on Mac.
    3) Apple TV. Ethernet connection. Configured TCP/IP to static IP address  I configured on router for the Apple TV. Turned on AirPlay. Set date and time to manual and set as the same time zone as the computer with iTunes. Turned on Home Sharing. Using latest version of Apple TV.
    Once the router was reset ( not restored and not just resetting the wifi. A complete router reset), the Apple TV found my iTunes library. It's been running now for over an hour and no drop in the home sharing. Working beautifully. I will be testing in the next couple days allowing the Apple TV to sleep, turning the firewall on the router to a minimal setting to see if it changes anything.
    Just tested the AirPlay from my iPad 2 to the Apple TV while the Apple TV is connected via ethernet connection and it works. At this point it appears that the setup is correct and complete with no errors.
    As a side note, the Ethernet connection between my router and Mac is via commercial devices using the power outlets as the wiring.
    Hope this helps many of you that were/ are struggling to get this to work like I was.

    spma3,
    Appreciate your further message. As you say "it's not fixed", but at least your solution appears to be a viable workaround!
    My Cisco RVS4000 Router will permit me to forward ports for up to 15 applications. Of these, thirteen already have default entries added, although none of these are presently Enabled. For example, here's just 2 lines...
    Application           HTTP        NTP
    External Port          80           123
    Internal Port           80            123
    Protocol                TCP          UDP
    IP Address            No entries at both
    and the Enabled box for both is unchecked. In fact none of these 13 possibilities is Enabled.
    To do what you are advising, I would need to...
    1) Enable the above Port 123 entry, changing it from UDP-->TCP.
    2) Add new entries for 3689 UDP & 5353 UDP... using the two free slots at the end of the table.
    3) Select three of the default entries, and reconfigure them for 80 TCP; 443 TCP; 53 TCP, all as per your guidance. And Enable them.
    Now, my present setup here has...
    1) My PC is wired straight to Port 2 of the Router, and has a Static IP Address set.
    My new ATV2 is hard-wired into the same subnet, albeit thru a series of switches, and again a Static IP is set. My understanding is that hard wiring an ATV automatically disables its WiFi.
    3) My wife's iPad2 is set for DHCP, so it can pick up an IP Address when on the move. It connects into the LAN using one of two WAP4410N Wireless Access Points. Ch-1 & Ch-6, with same SSID and security stuff set up on both. The WAPs in turn are wired in, again with Static IPs set. So depending where she is in the property she can connect with excellent signal strength, reaching the ATV2  by WiFi+LAN.
    On the Router DMZ is OFF, Port Range Triggering has no entries, nothing is Enabled, so is OFF. No idea about Device Discovery!
    Home Sharing is ON for the PC, ATV2 and iPad2, with the same Apple ID/Password set for each. It does work, just not consistently as it should.
    So to fully implement your idea, all I need to do is to enter these details. But I am unclear which IP Address I should put in at each new Single Port Forwarding entry field. Certainly not the iPad2, as its DHCP allocated value will change. Is it the ATV2 or the PC? Not sure, please clarify.
    BTW, I have no plan to deactivate my AVG Firewall on this PC. It is happy to pass all traffic related to iTunes, so cannot see this as a factor. Time zone same on all equipment.
    I tried with just 3689 UDP and 5353 UDP yesterday, and things were definitely better. I used 192.168.20.227, the IP Address for the ATV2.
    Look forward to your answer.

  • Posting to a URL connection and receiving a response...please help!

    Ok, here's the deal. Im trying to connect to a site, submit my username and password, and then retrieve the HTML source code for the page after I'm logged in so I can parse it and further manipulate it. So far, I'm establishing a connection and posting the info I want, but when I print the DataInputStream at the end, I keep getting the source code for the log in page, not the page after I'm logged in...so I'm guessing I'm not really getting logged in at all. I put my code below, please tell me whats wrong!! I really appriciate any help you can offer.
    -DFG
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.lang.String.*;
    public class URLReader {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    URL url;
    URLConnection urlConn;
    DataOutputStream printout;
    DataInputStream input;
    url = new URL ("www.someURL.com");
    urlConn = url.openConnection();
    urlConn.setDoInput (true);
    urlConn.setDoOutput (true);
    urlConn.setUseCaches (false);
    urlConn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type","application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
    printout = new DataOutputStream (urlConn.getOutputStream ());
    String content = "userid=" + URLEncoder.encode("username") +"&pass=" + URLEncoder.encode("password");
    printout.writeBytes(content);
    printout.flush();
    printout.close();
    input = new DataInputStream (urlConn.getInputStream ());
    String str;
    while (null != ((str=input.readLine()))) {
    System.out.println (str);
    input.close();
    catch(MalformedURLException mue) {
    System.out.println("exception");
    catch(IOException ioe) {
    System.out.println("exception");
    catch(Exception e) {
    System.out.println("exception");
    }

    Suppose the target website has the following pages:
    index.html (contains username, password fields and posts to login.html)
    login.html (processes the logging and displays the secured data).
    You should be posting the username and password to login.html. If so, I suspect that the login page you are posting to is not receiving the username and password and is simply outputting the login form again. Is this what happens when you open the url in a web browser and attempt to login with no username and password?

  • Ethernet connection and airport failure

    I'm studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, and I'm having difficulty with my internet access. On campus, the IT director put in the airport location and password, and it won't log on. It says "failure to connect." Other Macs in the building are working fine, but mine. I noticed that when I open 'Internet Connect,' the status under Airport says "Computer to Computer." Also, at my residence, my ethernet connection is not working. I plugged in another Mac into my port, and it worked fine. I tried putting in the TCP/IP for Ethernet manually (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, and DNS servers), without success. I always get a message reading "unable to find host." Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Luz, talk to the IT staff, the base stations that you are using need to "know" your PB's card address, in the airport utility, how many base stations can you see? Also make sure that in the airport setting, you have removed the "allow this computer to create networks" tick, this can cause havoc in some networks and get your machine booted off.

  • Ethernet connection and 'shared' option in finder window!!!

    I am relatively new to mac and everyday I see something that I don't understand, like the other day I connected to internet using ethernet cable and 'shared' option appeared in finder window with all kinds of people and devices listed. It never happened when I connected through wireless. What does it mean? Are other people able to see my computer and the content on it? Any explanation would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
    It's either a PC or some other Hewlett Packard device connected to your network or on another network (probably wirelessly) you're connected to. It's in the Shared section of the Sidebar because it's either broadcasting itself using Bonjour or more likely NetBios. You can choose to not see this option by disabling it in the Finder Preferences.
    It's also possible it's your router/gateway/wireless access point.
    If you've not enabled personal file sharing and you're not in the habit of handing your account password out to all and sundry, there's nothing to worry about.

    Mac OS X: About Networking Update 1.0
    The Mac OS X Networking Update 1.0 addresses certain issues and updates system software.
    This software updates certain networking components. Mac OS X 10.1.5 must be installed first.
    Important: Read Before Installing
    1. An Admin user password that does not contain spaces or Option-keyed characters is required to install. The password may not be blank. If you password must be changed, then follow these steps: Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu. Choose Users from the View menu. Select and Admin user and click Edit User. Click the Password tab. Change the password and click OK.
    2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. This precautionary statement does not apply to the normal installation of application software.
    3. The installation process should not be interrupted. Monitor progress by clicking the Detailed Progress disclosure triangle. If you experience a power outage or other interruption during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Software Downloads to install.
    4. Prerequisite software must be present before you can install this update, whether you are using Automatic Software Update or standalone installers. Updates must be installed in the correct order. For the correct sequence, see technical document 106713, "Mac OS X 10.1: Chart of Available Software Updates".
    Installation
    There are two ways to update.
    I. Automatic Software Update
    See technical document 106704, "Mac OS X: How to Update Your Software".
    Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to use Software Update more than once to get all desired updates.
    II. Standalone Installer
    A standalone installer is available from Apple Software Downloads (http://www.apple.com/swupdates/). See technical document 106713, "Mac OS X 10.1: Chart of Available Software Updates".
    Do not reinstall earlier Mac OS X updates
    You should not reinstall certain earlier updates after using this update, including:
    Mac OS X 10.0.1
    Mac OS X 10.0.2
    Mac OS X 10.0.3
    Mac OS X 10.0.4
    Mac OS X 10.1
    Mac OS X 10.1.1
    Mac OS X 10.1.2
    Mac OS X 10.1.3
    Mac OS X 10.1.4
    Mac OS X 10.1.5
    Security Update 10-19-01
    Installer Update 1.0
    Updates should be installed in the correct order. If for any reason you need to reinstall an earlier software update, the Mac OS X startup volume should be erased, after first backing up important documents and data. Reinstall Mac OS X, and install necessary updates in the correct order.
    Enhancements Delivered with this update

    OR
    Networking with a Windows PC
    This document provides an overview of options for connecting a Macintosh to a PC or other computer on the same network. In this article a "PC" is a computer using Microsoft Windows with an AMD or Intel microprocessor.
    Summary
    There are several ways to connect to a Windows PC. First, you must physically connect the two computers to a network, which may be as simple as a single cable connecting the two. Once this is done, you must start some type of sharing (or file service) on at least one of the two computers.
    The computer that is sharing is known as a server. The computer that connects to it is called a client.
    To connect, the client computer just needs an application program that can connect to the type of service being offered. Sometimes this application is a built-in part of the operating system, such as the Mac OS X Finder or Windows file browser.
    When you connect two computers together, it's useful to understand what is meant by "client" and "server." Though the idea conveyed by these terms is simple and generally consistent, there is an important variation on each: Any computer that offers a service is a "server" in that context. However, the term is also used to describe a computer or operating system that has been designed expressly for that purpose, such as Mac OS X Server. In addition to describing the computer, "client" is also used to describe the software used to connect to a particular service. A Web browser, for example, is an HTTP client.
    For greatest convenience in a work environment, you may want everyone on the network to be able to freely connect to each other's computer. This would mean you need to achieve bi-directional service, in which each computer can both share to and connect to another computer. In the example of a Mac OS X 10.2 computer and a Windows 2000 computer, this is as simple as turning on sharing at each computer. In other examples below, additional software may be required to achieve this.
    Making a physical connection
    The physical components of an Ethernet network are compatible with computers that use many different operating systems--such as Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and UNIX. You can connect all of these computers to the same physical network, which may be wired or wireless (AirPort, for example).
    Making a service connection
    Services are designed for various tasks, such as transferring files, webpages, or print jobs. Common examples that you may use are:
    AppleShare (also known as AFP, Personal File Sharing, Apple File Service)
    File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
    Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP, used primarily for webpages)
    LPR (Line Printer Request, common for printing)
    SMB (Windows file sharing)
    To get two computers on the same network to communicate with each other, you must identify a client-service relationship that they have in common. When you have computers using different operating systems on your network, it may help you to list the services offered by each operating system. You could then list the services each operating system can connect to using its built-in client software, such as the Chooser (Mac OS 9), the Connect to Server command (Mac OS X), the Windows file browser, or a Web browser. If you identify gaps in the desired client-service arrangement, third-party software may provide the missing components, thus adding possibilities that do not exist "out-of-box." Here are several examples:
    For each example scenario, other options exist. Before you can connect, a service must be intentionally turned on at the computer that offers it. For more information, see the documents linked below.
    Connect Windows 2000 to Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4
    Mac OS X 10.2 or later offers Windows File Sharing (SMB). Windows connects to SMB.
    Connect Mac OS X to Windows 2000
    Windows 2000 offers SMB service. Mac OS X 10.1 or later can connect to SMB service in the Finder.
    Connect Windows 2000 to Mac OS X 10.1
    Mac OS X 10.1 can offer FTP service, found in Sharing preferences. Windows 2000 can connect using any standard FTP client, which includes many Web browsers.
    Connect Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X
    Mac OS X offers file sharing service (AppleShare). Mac OS 9 can connect to AppleShare from the Chooser.
    Connect Windows 98 to Mac OS 9
    Mac OS 9 can offer HTTP service, which can be used to transfer either Web pages or files when configured properly. Windows 98 (and many other operating systems) can connect with a standard Web browser.
    Connect Mac OS 9 to Windows 98
    Windows 98 offers SMB service. If you install third-party SMB client software on Mac OS 9, then it can connect to SMB.

  • Lightening strike killed Ethernet connection and more?

    Lightening killed my ethernet connection. I saw a post that said a 3rd party replacement board would do. I installed it (Sonnet's Presto Gigabit 10/100/1000 PCI) and I still don't have a connection. Internet provider's modem talks and my Mac 10.4.2 sees the new board but no connection. Reloaded OS to not avail. Everything else works fine. Any advice?

    I too read the various reports on xlr8yourmac about the NetGear GA311. My husband had purchased this card to try in my son's PC that had lost its NIC card in the lightning storm as well. It didn't solve the problem on that machine. I found another post on Amazon by a reviewer who said he is an Apple Certified System Administrator. His report was that the GA311 should work in Tiger 10.4 and later without a driver.
    I've now tried the card in my G4 Sawtooth, similarly impaired by the storm, and after multiple, varied attempts to set it up with the Network preferences am unsuccessful. Network preferences recognized that the device was in the PCI slot and attempted to set it up. It just can't seem to complete the task.
    Now I'm wondering if there may be some other related damage on the machine that would affect its ability to connect to the Internet. Does anyone have any ideas about that? What other components are part of that capability on the G4? Can I try replacing an additional component while also replacing the card?
    Thanks for reading this post and sharing your feedback! I really want to get my wonderful G4 fully operational again. I have my new MacPro up and running now and its wonderful, but it won't run the majority of my Classic compatible software, like QuarkXpress 5, Flash 5, etc. I would like to continue having access to those programs.

  • HT4743 ethernet connection and Apple TV

    Do you connect the ethernet to the router itself? If so, will this improve the extremely slow download times?

    Thanks for the input and I understand that this is a relatively basic question. I have a broadband connection that comes out of the wall without any type of modem. The problem is that I have only one ethernet port on the back of the iMac and that is being used for my internet connection. Is there some way that I could use an ethernet hub to (1) have an internet connection on my computer using one ethernet cable and (2) stream music and movies to my AppleTV using a separate ethernet cable? Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • WiFi turning off when Ethernet connected, and not coming back on

    Since about last Tuesday (possibly when I updated to Safari 7.0.6), whenever I connect my MacBook Air (2011) to ethernet, my WiFi turns off. When I disconnect the ethernet, the WiFi does not turn back on, which makes this an annoying problem. If I try to manually turn it on while Ethernet is still connected, it does the scanning animation a few times, and then turns back off. Without the ethernet, once WiFi is turned back on, it works just fine.  I'm using both the Apple USB to Ethernet adapter and a StarTech Thunderbolt hub with Gigabit ethernet, and this happens with both.  Everything is up to date, and the only change that coincided with this new behavior is Safari, but I don't remember if I updated it before of after the problem appeared, and I may not have noticed the problem for a few days as I don't often use my mac away from a wired connection.
    Is this a known problem? Any known solution? When I search for it, all I find are people looking for ways to make the WiFi automatically toggle opposite the Ethernet, no one complaining that it's happening on its own.

    Why are you turning cellular data off when you get home? If you have wifi at home, it will connect to the phone. Then, once you leave home and get out of range of the wifi, cellular data should connect automatically, you wouldn't need to turn it back on. Turning wifi off is really not necessary unless you are using it as a battery saving feature. I leave my wifi turned on all the time, as well as cellular data, and my battery lasts for quite a long time.

  • Apple tv cannot connect to wifi it only gives me ethernet connection. and even ethernet is not working

    I have try many times to connect with my wifi apple tv but it does not find it to put codes it only gives me ethernet and even that does not connect. It was working perfectly but not now

    I have the same issue, and it sounds like others may have similar. What's weird is I watched a streamed video on the 22nd with no issues with 10.5.5, iTunes 8.0.1, and AppleTV 2.1. I went to watch something on Monday night and had the same issue you did. I checked my Software Update.log and these were the only updates (changes) to my MBP since I had it working on the 22nd:
    2008-10-27 17:32:45 -0400: Installed "Migration and DVD ⁄ CD Sharing Update" (1.1)
    2008-10-27 17:32:51 -0400: Installed "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004" (1.0)
    2008-10-27 17:33:58 -0400: Installed "iPhoto Update" (7.1.5)
    I did installed Boxee on Friday, but in troubleshooting this week I factory defaulted my AppleTV to 1.0, then did an upgrade to 2.2 and have the same issue.
    I troubleshoot technology for a living, and this makes no sense to me--you can always find something that changed to cause and issue, and I can't find anything.
    One more note, I did a sniffer (Wireshark) capture, and it reported malformed packets from the AppleTV to my MBP...now I accidentally deleted the capture and didn't dig further. Wireshark sometimes misrepresents normal things as issues. I will try and re-do the capture and see if I can did deeper.
    Apple please fix this!
