Ethernet connection problems

I am trying to set up ethernet connections between my Beige G3, my son's G3 iBoook, and a NEC SilentWriter 95 printer (using a Farallon EtherMac adapter). Both Macs are using Jaguar version 10.2.8. Up until recently, I had a crossover cable between the Beige G3 and the printer adapter, and was able to print just fine. I am now trying to connect all three nodes using an ethernet switch. Neither Mac can find the printer at all, and things are hit-and-miss trying to get the Macs to see each other on the network. The Beige G3 can usually see the iBook in the Connect to Server dialog, but when I try to connect, I get a -36 error code (sometimes a -5000 error code). The cables test out fine, and the link lights for both ports are lit on the switch. I have tried several iterations of rebooting, power-cycling, and manual address setting--all for naught.
Any advice on what to check, or how to diagnose the root cause?
Thanks,
Pete

The 169.254.xxx.yyy addresses should work as long as the subnet mask it assigned is 255.255.0.0. The subnet mask has a 1-bit for every binary bit that should be looked at to decide whether two IP addresses are on the same subnet. To communicate, the Macs must appear to be on the same subnet. If it does not do this automatically, you will need to set manual IP addresses.
The EtherMac adapter is an AppleTalk device. It does not have an IP address. It uses the Ethernet cable to talk AppleTalk protocol, just as the other devices use the Ethernet cable to talk IP protocol. They do not disrupt each other, but cannot be directly translated back and forth. Your Macs are also talking AppleTalk protocol onto the Ethernet cable when they go to print.
If you can get file sharing working and stable, then you should try power off the EtherMac adapter and the Printer, power up the printer and wait a minute after the lights stop flashing, and then power up the Ethermac. Although this device is a little better than the AsanteTalk at re-acquiring devices that drop out, it occasionally has the same problem and must be powered up last.

  • Ethernet Connection Problems TO MacBookPro

I recently purchased a MacBookPro. I am NOT using a wireless network at the moment. The MBP connects to the Internet and the other Mac on my network just fine. The problem is that my G5 can't connect to the MBP. I get a "Connection Failed" error along with more text about the server possibly not existing or isn't operational.
I've changed ports on the router and even restarted the router. The MBP just won't accept ethernet connections. Any ideas?

That was the piece I was missing! File Sharing was simply turned off. I love the easy ones!
    Thanks!

  • Weird ethernet connection problem

    Hello
I have a really weird connection problem. I am not a complete beginner but I just don't see what's going on.
I just had BT infinity 4 installed with the modem placed in a closet. I then had cat6 cables installed by an electrician between the closet and the different rooms, all wall sockets on each end.
Test1: If I connect to the BT Home Hub wirelessly it works.
Test2: If I connect to the BT Home Hub via ethernet directly to the device it works.
Test3: If I connect to the BT Home Hub via ethernet through the wall sockets directly it works.
Test4: If I connect a switch (a DLink DGS-1210) to the wall sockets and I connect through the switch I do not get connectivity. I can however access the switch's web interface or other computers connected to the switch. But I cannot connect to 192.168.1.254 for instance.
Test5: if I connect one switch to each end of the wall socket, I can access the web interface of the other switch through one switch.
Test6: if I connect a switch directly to the BT Home Hub, and I connect through the switch it doesn't work.
The switch test the cables which are fine, I see no collision in the switch port monitoring, and I have the same problem with all sockets. So I do not think that the wiring of the electrician itself is a problem (otherwise Test3 & Test5 would fail).
This gives me the feeling that the BT Home Hub (BT Home Hub 5) is the cause of my worries but I can't think of a logical explaination of why the Home Hub would behave differently whether it's connected directly rather than through a switch. Also these are rather high-end switches, which have always worked very well and I do not believe that both would fail simultaneously.
    Has anyone experienced anything similar?
    thanks
    Charles

The switch by any chance has not got some form of dhcp set up. Maybe allocating ip addresses to devices on your network as well as the home hub. I had similar issue when I had connected a linksys ata onto my network, rather than use the socket labeled network I used the one labeled ethernet.

  • IMac 21.5 inch Ethernet connection problem

I just got this iMac 21.5 inch 10,1 (Late 2009) about 1 week ago and what happens now is that Ethernet got some issue. Every time when start the PC, there is no connection with router although cable is connected. In the network window, it show Ethernet cable is unplugged. So I've to physically unplugged from either 1 end and re-plugged in again to get connected. Strange thing is my airport connection is working smoothly and my router to another PCs are also working normally. Can anyone care to share what could be the possible cause of this issue and how to resolve it. Thanks in advance.
P.S. Once it is connected, it working normally till restart again.

You can try a different Ethernet cable, but if it works after plugging back in, I don't think it would be the connection point. If it was, you should be able to disconnect and connect it while the iMac was off, and when you turn it on, it should work.
With AirPort turned off and Ethernet connected and working properly, open System Preferences Network pane. Where is says Locations, select +Edit Locations+. Click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up the new location's network settings as needed, and Apply. When using the new location, is there any improvement?

  • Ethernet connectivity problem appleTV 3rd gen to airport extreme 5th gen

I have an airport extreme connected with Tivo via a Trendnet ethernet plugin adapter via electrical outlet, and it works fine.  When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working.  Only when I disconnect the ethernet and start using wifi for my appleTV, will the airport extreme start working again.  It's driving me nuts.
My setup is ethernet (no cable modem or DSL modem) with the ethernet cable that supplies internet to my house coming through a router device (I think it is?) that is plugged into my airport extreme.  However, I do have a double NAT setup as my ethernet service has its own NAT too.  I tried switching from DHCP and NAT on the airport extreme to bridging mode as recommended, but then my internet doesn't work and I get a flashing amber light.  So I went back to DHCP and NAT on my extreme and am ignoring the double NAT, and so the wifi works fine now.
I have done multiple hard resets of all devices involved including the appleTV, airport extreme (I have set up my network at least 10 times) and have unplugged my router device and disconnected the ethernet cable supplying internet to the house as well.  Nothing seems to work.  I called tech support, and originally thought that my 3rd ethernet port wasn't working, so they mailed me another unit, which doesn't work as well (in fact, I keep getting a message to unplug my cable or DSL modem or disconnect the battery pack to cycle it no matter what I do but that is for another time).
Would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks.

When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working.
If the Apple TV was originally setup for WiFi, I suggest that you reset the device back to default settings and then configure it again with Ethernet plugged in. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Settings
As a test,  connect a spare Ethernet cable of any length (that you know is working) from the LAN <-> port on the AirPort Extreme to the Apple TV for the setup.
Setup the ATV again and double check to make sure that it is operating correctly
Change the location of the ATV back to the desired location on the network behind the powerline adapters
If you have a problem now, the first thing to check is the powerline adapter and or wiring

  • I seem to be having ethernet connectivity problems on my thunderbolt Macs - can anyone help?

Today (fateful coincidence?) BOTH my Thunderbolt Macs (27" i7i iMac and 13" MacBook Pro) report No connection to internet in Safari - using Network Diagnostics shows Ethernet/Internet to be working fine, but Safari error continues (onscreen message has strange formatting - each line of the message is repeated three times). This problem looks identical to an earlier problem which was fixed by an early Thunderbolt Display firmware update. Swapping ethernet on my Macbook Pro from Display Ethernet to MacBook Ethernet results in same problem. Meanwhile Email continues to work fine! Any insights/hints/lifelines greatfully received ...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • MacBook Ethernet Connectivity Problem

    Hi everyone:
Just until two weeks ago I was able to plug the ethernet cable into my MacBook in a conference room where I work. Since then it has not worked; the MacBook does not recognise that the cable is plugged in.
An IBM ThinkPad has no problems connecting to the same ethernet cable.-
When I take the cable and plug it directly into the Linksys 48 Port Gigabit Switch that is two floors below the conference room I have no problem. It seems that somehow the distance from the switch makes a difference to the MacBook, even though there was no problem just two weeks ago.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Is it related to a recent update?
Thank you very much for your help.

system updates and installation of software as admin can do bad things to network configurations at time.
Try deleting all the ethernet interfaces specified in System Preferences/Network/ left panel and creating a new one (be sure to make a note of the correct ethernet configuration).
Also, delete Network "Locations" you are not using (again in System Preferences/Network).
Also, you can run this from the command line to get an idea of what configuration is active and network state you have:
    ifconfig

  • Beige G3 to AEBS ethernet connection problem

I recently upgraded from my beige G3, running OS 9.2, to a new imac ,added an airport extreme base station, and have attempted to create a hybrid wireless/ethernet network. I had no network in my old configuation.
The wireless portion of the network (between the AEBS and the new imac) works like a champ. I can both connect to the internet and print to my HP 6110 aio.
My problem is the ethernet portion of the network. I have connected the G3 to the AEBS with an ethernet cable. But I can neither log on to the internet nor print from that unit.
The chooser window does not show any port in the right panel of the dialogue window when I highlight the HP 6110, thus I can’t print.
As for the internet connection, I guess I don’t really understand what changes need to be made to configure the unit to talk to the AEBS. What I do know is that there is no communication and thus no internet access.
Can anyone help a rookie learn the ropes?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

  • Mac/Apple TV Connectivity via ethernet connection problems

I am having a connectivity issue with my Mac and Apple TV. I am connected to the internet via cable modem and ethernet lines. I have my Mac, Apple TV and cable modem all connected via a Netgear 5-port ethernet switch (10/100 Mbps). I am able to connect to the iTunes store (internet) with either my Mac or Apple TV by unplugging my cable modem and reconnecting with one device "on", but in order to switch from Mac to Apple TV (or vice versa) it is necessary to sleep the one device, and reconnect with the other. I am unable to communicate from the Apple TV to my Mac iTunes without a direct ethernet cable between them.
I suspect there's something in the system preferences that I'm not doing. All devices seem to work OK in isolation but not together.
    Any ideas?

    cuatro,
    welcome to discussions.
Your issue is with the Netgear switch. It needs to be a router and also provide DHCP and NAT. It might be able to do this by re-configuring. In fact, as you describe it as a 5-port switch, it's very likely that one port is on the WAN side (internet) and the other four are LAN side (local). Which model switch is it ?
The issue start with the cable modem, which will only provide one Ethernet port and one IP address to access the internet. Your Netgear should really then put up a firewall and provide up to 4 local IP addresses (a LAN) for sharing access to the internet. It looks like it's not doing this, but just sharing the one IP address (supplied by your cable ISP) amongst all the attached devices. This can be a nightmare, as you are finding out.
Let us know about the Netgear and we can help.
Just in case the Netgear is unable to do what we want it to, does your G5 have more than one Ethernet port ? Is it physically possible to connect the cable modem directly to the G5 ? (are the cables long enough?) Is it physically possible then to connect the AppleTV to the G5 ? If not directly, then via the Netgear ?
It may be that you will have to spend about £30 on a router with firewall / DHCP / NAT / etc, or £40-£50 on a top-of-the-range wireless-n router, which your AppleTV will love. I'm almost certain that your existing Netgear is sufficient though.

  • Apple Airport Express  N Ethernet connection problems...

    Hello,
I have just setup my apple airport express to connect to my belkin wireless N router F5D8636-4 v2 via Ethernet. I have turned all the wireless features off on the express as I'm only using it to send music to my DAC. It is assigned I.P by DHCP all other computers are manually asigned I.Ps so no conflicts. My computer is also wired to the router and running windows 7 64bit. It all works great apart from when I turn my P.C off.
When I turn it back on it cannot find the airport express over LAN until I reset the apple airport express by powering it down and back on. Is this right? Surely not? OR when im finished with my hi-fi should I be turning the apple airport express off?
    Anyone got any suggestions?
    Cheers

  • KC705 ethernet connectivity problem

I am using kc705 eval. board. I tried xtp147 design example, after programming the board, tx led led is on but PC dont recieve anything. I am using wireshark, and also antivirus and firewall are off.
Second, I tried 4dsp's design example (with their fmc142 board) and i stil have the same problem.
I am sure that the board is configured well (jumpers, switches etc).
Is there any way to test and debug ethernet PHY?

Update: Switching ports doen't always help, however entering an IP address manually does help.
I wonder if the problem is related to the Airport (compatibility?)
In 10.6.8 there is no problem what so ever - so, hardware is ok.
Wi-Fi seems ok so far as well

  • Time Capsule Ethernet Connection Problem

I have a Time Capsule running the latest firmware 7.4.1
Works find with the wireless connection. When I plugin my Macbook Pro 15" with an ethernet cable and turn off the Airport, internet connection is fine for about 5-10 mins, then internet connection drops. I still have connection to the Time Capsule to access the harddrive etc but no internet access. If I then disconnect the ethernet cable, turn on the airport it works fine again. Any ideas?

Did you buy a second hand iMac.. you have listed Lion as the OS in the profile section at the bottom.. Any new Mac would of course have Mountain Lion.
Please tell me what kind of broadband you have and model of modem router.
What version is the utility? It has to be 6.3.1 to work with the new TC.. please plug directly into the router and get the latest airport utility if you don't have it.
You also need to set IPv6 for local link to get this working.. see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Now once you have made sure all is ready..
Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.. turn off wireless in the computer.. simply click the wifi symbol in the top menu area and shut it off. Do this in total network isolation. Just Mac and TC.
Make sure the computer gets an IP from the TC.. open the network preferences.. you should get 10.0.1.2 with a newly reset TC.
Open the airport utility and set the TC to bridge mode. thusly.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
Forget the guest network.. that was a mistake apple made in the setup.. in bridge the TC cannot do guest.
I recommend you use all names that are short, no space and pure alphanumeric.
Update the TC and plug it into the main router by ethernet.. you can use ethernet or wireless to connect to it.
    Tell us how you go.

  • Suggestion for people with Ethernet connection problems

I had problems getting my P965 Platinum to connect to my D-Link router and stay connected. It would connect once then on the next boot it wouldn't. I tried everything and finally, I'm not even sure what made me think of it   , I went into the Realtek properties and set it to 100Mbps/Full Duplex instead of 1000Mbps/Full Duplex and that did the trick. I thought I would share this because I know I wasn't the only having problems with it.

65MB/s vs 15MB/s ? hmm... can you try from a very clean OS for the transffer rate? This sounds like some Windows issue...
It is kind of clean OS install (+ windows xp service pack 2) as I just bought the mobo.
I kicked in my old A64 rig, and used same cables I have in my room. (I actually have 2 cables coming from my 1gb switch). Amd rig kicks like 45-50mb/s, while my msi 965p gives only 15-18mb/s for maximum transfer rate.
I quess my fileserver is bottlenecking to 50mb/s as the hdd's arent very fast, and they are quite full. Didint bother to build ramdrive for tesing as this clearly shows my msi's 1gb lan is just slow.
What I found out is that my amd board is able to use both cables on my room @ 1000mbit rate with same performance, where my MSI does connect 1000mbit with other cable, but autonegotiates to 100mbit with another. Also cant force it to use 1000mbit with the cable it is autonegotiating to 100mbit.  Strange.
Cables are cat6 speck. Cant try another cables as these are like 20 meters long, so Im not going to get new cable just for fun of testing.
Cables are so called "home made" I bought something like 80 meters of this cable and some connectors and borrowed the rj45 tool from friend.
I have constructed 1gb "intranet" to my apartmet, where every room has 1 cable, exept my own has 2. (got also 3x100mbit outbound connections (one/room), gotta love student apartments ).
quote from w.p.o: "The D-Links meant for home users are not the best quality possible. We were able to break 3 D-links gigabit home switches in a week just with load we got from couple of servers when we did some testing at work."
Actually this D-Link is one of the first 8-port 1GB home switches that can really achieve 8Gbit/s switching speed, where very many switches cant handle such loads and bottlenect to about 2-4gbit. (My student friends had this same box tested in some project @ university network lab).
Cannot ping the box, as it does not have any dedicated IP address for its self, as it is not router, but switch. Pinging trought router doesnt seem to drop packets, maybe i should get some network analyzer tool so I could make bit more traffic on the lines and see if it starts dropping packets then.
Tho might be also some bios problem or sumthing. Seems the p965 neo-f is atleast having lot of problems with all kinds of areas. Like:
    PCI cards
    Memory compatibility
    Lan
    Jmicron

  • MBP 5.1 I have a recent problem with airport connectivity. ethernet connection is working fine, but wifi has become extremely slow and bad functioning. signal is received, no problem with the wlan (my husband 's wifi with MBP is perfect) please help

I have a MBP 5.1 with snow leopard 10.6.8. It has been working fine until few days ago, when it started to have different problems:
    1) airport is not working well. it is extremely slow, has difficulties in fully loading pages, looses connectivity, It is not browser related, behaves thesame in safari or firefox; it is not the router/wlan; my husband mbp wifi works fine (as it was mine...) and iphone wifi is also working fine. it sees the signal and different networks. , it is also very very slow in opening skype (after that, it is working ok) if  I connect via ethernet cable to the same router, everything works perfectly and with the correct speed.could it be a damaged airport card? a software problem/corruption? logic board? (I hope not, the computer is out of apple care now....)
    2) after a certain time (more than hours) of use, the trackpad is behaving strangly, increase sensitivity to touch, unwanted selection of folders, files and text or images in web pages when i move the cursor, the cursor jumping all over the places while writing, ecc I have the impression it starts doing that when I use heavily the CPU ( and the temperature goes up). Is this again a problem of the mother/logic board?
I had recently serviced it since it was not booting properly, but except some permissions repaired, they did noit find anything wrong in the hard drive (which I have  now substituted with a SSD) or other hardware.
thanks in advance for any help/suggestions
    alessandra

I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???
    thanks again
