Ethernet Connection Randomly Dropping w/ AirPort Extreme Router

My wired ethernet connection drops sometimes randomly, but I think it tends to do it more if I'm in an audio chat with someone on iChat (not sure). Here is my setup:
FiOS ISP (always been reliable in the past) -> AirPort Extreme (router) -> Cisco gig-e switch (reliable) -> 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard (no I do not use wifi) (my computer) -> Internet sharing to my brother's computer via ethernet port 2 (set up after the new router was installed, but problem happened without it)
It seemed to start doing this once I switched the router to AirPort Extreme. We were using the one Verizon gave us, a junky Actiontec router that was messing with our DNS and port forwardings but wasn't dropping my computer's connection randomly.
I have it set to use DHCP. When it drops, other things have connection, just not my computer. It drops for about 30 seconds then comes up. I've already tried rebooting the router and the switch. I suspect that something is funny with the DHCP because I rarely get the message that my computer's name has already been taken (by itself!), which has always happened even with the old router. Nothing is stealing my address. Anything else I should try?

Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
System Preferences>Network
Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless won't connect to my new Airport Extreme router

I have owned my Officejet 8000 Wireless printer for about a year and had no problems with it.  However, my old wireless router wasn't fully Mac compatible so I couldn't secure it with a password.  I now need a secure network, so I bought an Apple Airport Extreme router in December.
I installed the router last night and it is working fine on my iMac, my PC laptop and my iPhone.
However, tonight I am trying to set up the Officejet Pro 8000 with no luck.  I've searched the posts here for 3 hours and am not finding the help I need.  Based on the other posts I've read, I am describing my situation below.
I am trying to set up the printer from my Intel iMac with Mac OS 10.6.4
I am trying to set up the printer with the HP Setup assistant that I just installed from the printer software.
On the first wizard screen it tells me that my device is not configured (I agree)
Then I ask it to configure for a wireless network.
When I get to the Network Selection page, both my network AND my guest network (which I let my neighbor use) are shown on the list with full signal strength.
When I click my network and then continue, the HP setup wizard freezes, and I have to force-quit it.
When I click my guest network and then continue, I get the message that my network is not within the reach.  (FYI, the printer is 10 feet from the router.)
I have tried powering on/off the printer, router, and computer at all different stages of the process with no luck.
    For my Airport:
My radio mode is set to the most compatible choice
MAC access control is not enabled
    Everything is WPA2 security
"Use wide channels" and "Create a closed network" are UN-checked
The channel is set to 11
I am happy to try the "Add network client" thing I saw on other posts, but I don't think I have a printer front panel where I can start the "WPS" (don't know what that is) process.   If I do, it's not obvious and not in the HP manual.
My ISP is Comcast (cable internet).
I would really, really appreciate some help!  Please let me know what information I forgot to include and I will be happy to provide it.
    Thank you!
    This question was solved.

First, you should be at 10.6.6, so please do Software Update (Apple menu) over and over until there are no more updates.
From where did you get the HP software for your printer? Was it labeled as being compatible with 10.6?
Finally, you will need to reset the printer so, let's do that:
Press and hold the Power button, press Network button, (on some models, press the Wireless button ), two times, press the
press the Cancel button three times, and release the Power button.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • How do I connect a PC via ethernet to my new Airport Extreme router?

I just replaced an old Actiontec router with a new Apple Airport Extreme router to work with my Verizon FIOS service. Connection to all Apple products via ethernet or wireless works OK, however I cannot get the PC up and running via its ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme. Any help would be much appreciated.

If your other devices are working then it is probably the PC's IP configuration.
First, make sure that the PC is actually connected to the Extreme by verifying the lights are on at the Ethernet ports on the PC and the Extreme.
If you are using DHCP to manage the IP addresses then make sure that the PC is configured to "Obtain IP Address Automatically" for both IP versions 4 and 6.
When I replaced my Linksys w/ an Extreme I forgot that I had a couple devices configured with static (manual) IPs.  My old one used the "192.168.1.nn" and my Extreme defaulted to "10.0.1.nn". Once i converted all the static IPs to the correct subnet then all was good.

I want to connect a Windows PC to an existing Airport Extreme router via ethernet connection. Is there any utility required or can I just plug into the router? The router is already set up and working with existing iMacs.

thanks for the info. I found apple utilty software on this windows 7  PC but I guess it is not required for sharing  internet on exisiting apple extreme. Am I correct that I can remove this apple software?

Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

  • If you have an Airport Extreme router and a slow Internet connection ...

I know that Internet connection speeds are extremely variable, but I wanted to share this post for anyone having performance problems (very slow Internet connection speeds) while using an Airport Extreme router. This may or may not help you, but it might help someone.
I have a RoadRunner Turbo account, and I was experiencing consistently slow Internet download speeds (an average of only about 300KB/sec). However, when I bypassed my router and connected my Mac directly to the Time Warner modem my download speeds were 6 to 8 times faster (up to about 2MB/sec).
After weeks of tinkering and reading Apple documents I discovered that my Airport Extreme router had an improper setting. That setting is found under: Manual Setup -> Internet -> Internet Connection -> Ethernet WAN Port. When I was experiencing the very slow speeds, my Ethernet WAN Port setting was: '100 Mbps/Full Duplex.' To fix the problem I simply changed this to 'Automatic (Default).'
This one change resulted in a huge, positive performance boost for me. I hope this post helps other people.

  • Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except join not extend and I can not get a network on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Rout/

Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except "join a wireless network (which it does) not "extend a wireless network" (Led turns yellow and I can not get a network working on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Router.
    Airport gets it address DHCP.

Funny how I can ping the Extreme but the Hard Ethernet ports dont seem to work correctly.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "Join" a wireless network, the Ethernet ports are not enabled.
Oddly, the AirPort Express has a special feature that will allow it to to "Join" virtually any wireless network.....and the Ethernet port can be enabled. So, an Express would work for your purpose to provide an Ethernet connection to the media player. This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main router.
Note that the Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "Joins".

  • I have a Sony Bravia KDL46W905 TV but I can't get it to connect the Airport Extreme router

My Sony Bravia KDL46W905 TV won't connect to my Airport Extreme router and the internet. It recognises and picks up my home wireless network though and I'm inputting the correct password but still won't connect. The router is set to WPA2 Personal.
    Anyone any ideas?

While most devices should connect using WPA2 Personal, please temporarily test using no security to see if the Sony TV will connect that way.
If it will, then try the more compatible setting of WPA/WPA2 Personal on the AirPort Extreme and test that way.
However, if the TV will not connect using no wireless security.....then it is a no brainer to conclude that the TV will never connect with security enabled....so more troublehooting is going to be required.
In that case, make sure that the name of your wireless network......
Does not exceed 20 characters, fewer would be better
Does not contain any special characters like an apostrophe, asterisk, dollar sign, etc
Does not have any blank spaces
For example, if the current name of your wireless network is something like.....
    rpepler's wireless network
Change that to read something like.....
    rpeplerwireless
Same rules for the wireless network password

  • When connecting wired my router straight from my internet provider I get speeds in the 90mps range.  Now when connecting wired through my airport extreme I get speeds near 10mps. Also when using wireless for my ipad3 I recieve download speeds of .63mps.

When connecting, wired, to my router from my ISP I get speeds in the 90mbps range.  Then when connecting, wired, to my Airport Extreme I get speeds of 10mbps.  Wirelessly I get download speeds of 6mbps on my laptops and only 1mbs with my Ipad3.  I am making sure only one device is sharing the network to make sure to get accurate results.  Why are things so slow?

    Hi Ty,
First, check with you ISP to see what speed they've promised.  In my case, they indicated that the speed should be greater than 50 Mbps.  If they say that it should be significantly higher than what your getting, then try the following if you're using Airport Utility v.6.:
    1. Open the Airport Utility (Desktop: Command+Shift+U to open Utility Folder, select Airport Utility)
    2. Click on the visual representation of the Airport Extreme and then select "Edit" (bottom right corner)
    3. When the window opens (to a tab "Base Station"), click on the "Wireless" tab,
-it should have the following options: Network Mode, Wireless Network Name, Wireless Security, Wireless Password, Verify Password, a checkbox with "Enable Guest Network", and a button "Wireless Options..."]
    4. Select "Wireless Options", which should open another window with the following options:
5Ghz network name, Country, a checkbox with "Create hidden Network", Radio Mode, 2.4 GHz Channel, and 5 GHz Channel [both of which can stay on "Automatic"]
    5. Clicking on  "Radio Mode" will bring up a list in which the las option should read:
    802.11n only (5Ghz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz)
Once you click "Save", your router will blink amber for a little while and then it should work.
Hope this helps.  Let me know if it does/doesn't.

  • Can't connect to MacBook with Airport Extreme

I just swapped Airport Extreme base with new Airport Extreme 8012.N and now my Macbook can't connect to internet, keeps cutting out and dropping off. I have an iMac G5 connected via ethernet to Airport Extreme and Macbook in living room. It was working fine with old Airport Extreme router. I also have an Apple Express (not new 8012.N ) but it just blinks orange when plugged in. Any help would be appreciated.

You have to power down everything to start with. Make a clean slate so to speak.
I switched from an older Air Port Express to the new Extreme. Run the new software and when you power back up the new base station should show in the window. Follow the steps. It made me feel stupid the 1st time through and I had to do it again. You have to take your bent paperclip and reset.
After I got the new base station up and running I took the old Express and used it for Airtunes. At first it just blinked and wouldn't show up on the list of devices. I had to do the paperclip thing. And there it was! Green light! Follow the steps for Airtunes. Then I had to reconfigure my settings for my HP 3300 series wireless printer. That wasn't so bad, it all worked.
The machines all work well; we all just need pay close attention to the instructions.
I think that the Apple on line instructions could be a bit more clear. It all worked as it was supposed to but it was certainly a trial and error process.

  • Airport Express dropping from Airport Extreme

Everything worked until a few weeks ago when I updated the firmware on an old Airport Express. The expresses (I had 2) started dropping from the network.
I now have a new Airport Extreme, a new modem and a new Airport Express. The Express extends my network. The Express is 30 feet from my main house in a guest house. It is a direct line through the window through the sliding glass doors to the room with the Extreme. In the guesthouse the Express connects to the 2.4 Ghz with a transmit rate between 100 and 150. It works (like it is working now) and then it will drop off the network.
I thought it was conflicting with my security router, which I have completely unplugged to test the Apple network. It still dropped off after working for a while. Sometimes it drops while I am using the network; other times it drops when I am not using it.
    I have tried:
setting the channel to different numbers.
hard rebooting everything and resetting up the network.
    getting a new modem.
    getting a new Express.
getting a new Extreme (had a Time Capsule).
had my cable line redone (the cable folks thought it was frayed and maybe that was the problem).
The Extreme is on WPA2 and is now on automatic channel (having tried fixed ones I am back to automatic).
    I'm still having the problem.
Advice? Help or maybe I need to finally give up on Apple, which I have usually loved....

Thanks for your explicit comments iFelix.
    No luck yet.
    Here is where I stand:
    - home wireless network: RedFoxNetwork
-->> Cable modem connected to Airport Extreme, router connected to Airport Extreme
-->> this Network hosts iMac G5 (with iTunes, Airport card), Mac Mini, Windoz XP Dell
    -->> uses channel 11
    --->> uses WEP
    - 2nd network (RedFoxMusic) - as you suggested
-->> this network is hardwired from router above to Airport Express
-->> 2nd network configured as you suggested
    ---- do not Distribute IP
    ---- uses channel 2
---- iTunes speakers named "Living Room"
    ---- no WEP
So now I have 2 networks, RedFoxNetwork & RedFoxMusic, in the Airport menu bar selector on my iMac.
When the iMac is on the primary wireless network, TheRedFoxNetwork, I do not see "living Room" as a choice in the lower right speaker selector in iTunes. Playing music in iTunes produces no music from the living room (hard wired Airport Express connection).
Just for kicks, I select the RedFoxMusic network on the iMac. "Living Room" appears as a speaker choice, ITunes plays over Airport Express & stereo.
What have I missed that I needed to select the second (hardwired) network in order for AirTunes to work properly?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rob
As I said "never connect to the Airport Express
network", this means "never connect to the Airport
    Express network".
If I create a second wireless network, then would
    I
need to switch to the network supporting the
    Airport
    Express?
    No
If not, the remote speakers would not
appear in the iTunes Speaker selection dropdown,
    correct?
They will appear as the Airport Express is still part
of your network, in fact both wireless networks are
in fact one network, but you want iTunes to go via
the ethernet connection to avoid the dropouts.
Or does the wired connection obviate the need to
switch to the 2nd (iTunes only) network?
    Yes.
Which is why I said "never connect to the Airport
    Express network".

  • Can't make Airport Extreme router work with non-Apple device

I am trying to help a friend who has a PC (Windows 7) that has a wired Ethernet connection to his girlfriend's Airport Extreme router.  He wants his Internet-capable Blu-Ray player and her IPad to wirelessly access the Internet via the Aiport Extreme router, with both the Blu-Ray player and the IPad's Internet access protected by WPA-2 encryption (both devices are capable of WPA-2).  How do I do this?
Here are the problems we've run into:
    1)  The Airport Utility for Windows (5.6.1) has been installed on the P.C., and we've used it to update the firmware on the Airport Extreme router.  However, after we followed the Aiport Utility instructions to set up the network, all the router wanted to do was look for an Apple device.  His girlfriend and her IPad are out-of-town right now, so the only device within range was the Blu-Ray player, and the router did not see it.  Not only that, but almost all the menu options on the Airport Utility were "greyed out" (unusable), except for "Configuration."  I am very troubled by the fact that the Airport Extreme router seems to want to look only for Apple devices.
    2)  In order to get Internet access for his Blu-Ray player for the time being, my friend pushed the "reset" button on the Airport Extreme router, and he can now use his Blu-Ray player for Netflix and other Internet streaming options.  However, the Blu-Ray's wireless Internet access is an unencrypted connection, and the Airport Extreme router is displaying a flashing amber light -- not a good situation.
    3) Although I know his girlfriend could access the router via her IPad when she returns, she is French-Canadian, and her IPad operates in French.  I happen to know some French, but I have enough trouble trying to understand  wireless networking terminology in English without having to try to figure out the equivalent terms in French.  Thankfully, the Airport Utility for Windows on his P.C. is in English, so that's what we've got to use to solve this problem.
I have profound respect for Apple products, but I'm a Windows/Linkysis router guy, so that's why I'm stumped.  Can anybody out there help me?

Which model of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) do they have? What is the version of firmware that you updated it to?
By default, the AEBS will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name (or SSID) of something like Apple Network NNNNNN. This would be similar to a Linksys when first powered-up.

  • HT3728 how do I see IP addresses of connected devices to my airport extreme

I'm trying to reuse a Net Gear N600 router I had to shelve since I installed my Airport Extreme router as an access point.  I need to see other IP addresses so I can configure the N600 IP address as 10.0.1.xxx.  The only way to make sure I don't use an already used IP address for the N600 is to see what IP addresses are used by the system.
The only support I've found here is how to set up a distributed network using other apple airport extreme devices.
Has anyone done/added a second non-apple router configured as an access point to an airport extreme.  If you have please let me know what you did.  I intend to have the N600 connected via ethernet cable to my airport extreme to extend both my wifi network and connected devices.

  • Why do I lose internet connection when I put airport extreme into bridge mode to correct Double NAT issue

I reset my airport extreme router the other day because I was too lazy to reset the password on my private network.
I have been reading the advice found on apple support communities and wide web, but the solutions do not solve any problems and often create new ones.
I'm regretting because everything was working just fine.
But I remember having this double nat error when I first set it up a few months back, but now I cannot resolve it.
I would live with the yellow light, but it seems that this double nat error is preventing my playstation 3 from connecting to the airport extreme.
When I put the aiport extreme into bridge mode, I loose all my wireless networks, even when I reboot the airport extreme and the modem.
I try rebooting the modem, then the airport. and vice versa. No internet.
I switch back to NAT/DCHP and the internet works fine on apple devices, but not the playstation 3, and I have the 1 Double NAT error.
I have a plain stock Motorolla modem and I can dial in and see settings (although nothing about NAT). I didn't see where to see them.
I tried setting the DHCP only but it said it didn't like the settings. is there a stock range i could be using?

I have a plain stock Motorolla modem and I can dial in and see settings (although nothing about NAT). I didn't see where to see them.
Exact model .. motorola make adsl, cable and probably wireless modems.. with some modems and some modem router.. we need exact info. What kind of broadband do you have?
I would note.. some of the motorola cable modems seem to have issues with the apple routers. If you are about due to change modems.. now is a good time.. not another motorola.
If the modem is a straight cable modem, the AE must be in router mode.. but you need to power down the cable modem. maybe for 20min so the new router can pick up the IP address.
You cannot use DHCP alone.. the ISP do not give you a block of IP addresses.
You cannot use bridge with a pure modem.. you will find it works.. but only to one device.
The only reason you get double NAT is the failure to pick up the public IP.
    Give the info required..
If you have trouble, I need the actual IP of the modem. the actual IP of the AE WAN port when plugged in. Screenshots are good.

  • Can't connect wireless device to airport extreme

I bought airport extreme router second hand and am connecting it to HP desktop windows 8.  All software is installed properly and router is connected.  I have a solid green light, and internet access on desktop, but cannot connect wireless devices to network (kindle, cell phone, etc.)  All wireless devices show excellent network signal strength, allow me to put the password in, but all show connected and have not internet access.

This appears to be a simple modem, so assuming that you reset the modem completely before you connected it to the AirPort Extreme, the next step would be to check to insure that the AirPort is in router mode and not bridge mode.
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below that
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes, and give the AirPort a full minute to restart
Check the network again to see if devices can connect now.
