Ethernet connection through thunderbolt cable

I've got a 27" Thunderbolt display where my mac mini is connected. In the back of the mini i've plugged the ethernet LAN cable in.
Once in a while I want to dock my Macbook Retina to the display and get 1) Bigger screen and 2) LAN connectivity
My questions:
1) If only connecting my macbook to the display via thunderbolt - can I get the ethernet connectivity which sits in the mac mini. Or do I have to connect with a separate Thunderbolt-LAN adaptor (i.e meaning two cables)
2) Does a thunderbolt cable exist with magsafe 2 (i.e similar to the cable that is in the display)

1) If you want to dock your MBPr, it would be best to have the Display Ethernet connected;
2) ALL Thunderbolt Displays shipping after the Retina model came out were supposed to come with a MagSafe>MagSafe 2 adapter. If yours didn't, you can buy one for $10 or just go to your local Apple Store or an AASP and see if they will give you one.

I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

Sharing Ethernet Connection Through Airport

Is it possible to share your Ethernet connection through airport so that two computers can connect to a single connection without the need of a wireless router? I know that this is possible on XP, but I am somewhat new with OS X and cannot seem to figure it out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Open the Sharing preference, click on the Internet tab, select the connection to share from the drop down menu, then check the ports that will share the connection.
You will find additional info by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching on the appropriate term.

That is probably a lot of stuff you do not want on your iPhone. So this can be handled a few different was. For you current situation, you can delete the apps directly on your iPhone by holding on the app until it starts to jiggle and then tap on the X of all the apps that you do not want. The second thing you can do is before you sync with iTunes, look at the app section on your iPhone to know what gets transfer to it and you can deselect items that you do not want. Lastly, if you download content on your iPad and it is a universal app, you can actually download it directly to your iPhone by looking at your past purchases and download it directly from the App Store. I have a mac Book Pro and and iMac, both with Thunderbolt. I connect my thunderbolt cable to each and each tells me that it is connected to the other, but when I try secondary screen in Aperture it is still grey and not available, what do I have to do to?

I have a Mac Pro and an Imac, both with thunderbolt. When I connect the two together with a thunderbolt cable each recognises the other as shown in the system report, but when I try to use second screen in Aperture, the option is still grey and unavailable. What do i have to do to activate second screen in Aperture via thunderbolt?

In actual fact this seems a bigger problem than I thought. Linking the two computers via the Thundernolt cable and selecting cmd F2 no longer shares the screen at all and Apple say it may not be able too in Mointain Lion - What are they playing at, hundreds of customers link computers together and share the screens - Lets hope they are wrong and tell us what we need to do other than move back to Windows.

External HD connected through network cable

Ok, I am a brand new mac user and am extremely confused. I have an external HD that connects through a cat5 cable. There is a plug in the drive for usb, but its the same jack as the computer so I guess I cannot connect it that way. It's a couple years old so I think things have changed a bit.
Anyway, when I plug it in I can't seem to find the drive anywhere. is it supposed to appear in finder or what about disk utility? It just doesn't seem to exist and I am looking for something like windows explorer to find it. When I plug it into my pc I can see it, but not my mac. I can't really reformat the drive either because I can't see it on my mac. Am I doing something wrong, or will the cat5 cable just not work?

Mavericks 10.9-10.9.1 bug/issue/problem: external drives connected through thunderbolt or firewire are not put to sleep when iMac goes to sleep

Previous to Mavericks (10.9 - 10.9.1) I've had no issues with external firewire or thunderbolt connected drives to be put to sleep. However, since Mavericks all of my external drives are not put to sleep when my iMac, or Mac Pro go to sleep.
How can a company such as Apple, pushing people to have external devices like hard drives, is not on top of fixing this issue? Apple pushed for firewire and thunderbolt, thus All external drives I've owned are firewire. Because of speed. I bought thunderbolt adapters for firewire, and before Mavericks all worked great. Now that we have 10.9.1 update, this is still an issue!
I'm aware of the temporary solution of connecting the drive through USB to make it work, this is not a solution, but a hack.
Please let Apple know that this is a known issue, and there should be a fix for it. Everyone's data depends on it! Not only current external backups, but also external sensitive hard drives we rely on. Currently, the following makes are experiencing this issue: Lacie, OWC (Elite Pro), WD, Promise, Seagate, Toshiba, G-Drive.

Same 2 issues with 10.9.3:
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down when Mac goes to sleep.
also
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down for inactivity despite “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” is checked in energy saver.
This has been going on since the launch of Mavericks and no solution found yet.
USB ports work normally.

I recently purchased a thunderbolt ethernet adaptor and I realised that when I am out of town (I travel alot) the adpator does not work with the hotel etherenet network regardless of whatever hotel I am staying at. Does anybody else have this issue? is there a software or update I need to download? help!

maybe it just takes a lot longer to acquire an IP address at the hotels vs your home, where the network is already known
next time, connect it and then open network under system preferences, you'll be able to see the adapter's progress in acquiring an IP address

New MacBook Pro 15" unable to recognize Hard Drive connected by thunderbolt cable

We have three macs in the house and recently purchased a new MacBook Pro 15" with two thunderbolt connections.
I have a 4TB Seagate HD that has been partitioned into 4 1 TB drives all formatted for MAC OS. Each Partition is being used for a separate time machine capsule and when I hooked up the new Mac I got that the disk was not recognized and has to be initialized.
Since the other two macs read it fine I'm not sure that this is a problem with the actual hard drive itself.
I rebooted the New Mac and installed all the updates, but am still having the problem. It is seeing the drive, but only as 1 4TB partition that needs to be formatted.
Is this a problem with the new mac or is there a simple solution.

I didn't say to turn off the fans. I say you have to increase the speed of yours fans to 3000 rpm, for you realize the intensity of noise emitted by my hard drive. I would like your opinions if my hard drive is normal or not ? I think not, because the noise is very hard, but I would like a confirmation.

That is almost always because the phone was hacked to unlock it from the original carrier.

I want to use my Macbook Air 2011 as an external disk for my iMac 2011. I connected the two with a Thunderbolt cable and when starting the MacBook Air I pressed "T" and it worked except with Office documents. Can anybody help?

I want to use my MacBook Air as an external disk to my iMac. I talked to Apple care and we solved it by connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the two computers. I then turn on the MacBook Air while pressing the "T" and it works. I can sit and work on my iMac and grab/change/save the files that are in my MacBook Air EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office files. I called Microsoft and they can't solve it. They say it might be a problem with the Thunderbolt cable. Has anybody have this problem?
Both computers are 2011 and they both have Office 2011.

For Word it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /)"
For Excel it says "the file could not be found. Check te spelling of the filename, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure hat the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
I tried this with many different documents, and I always get the same message.

How to use mobile internet in xp system through usb cable

I was using mobile internet on my pc through usb tether. I have a xp system and I connect through use cable. I downloaded PdaNet+ usb tether driver and it was working fine for a couple of days. But now it is not working and I can't even re-install it. Can anyone tell me the other option to install usb tether driver on xp system.

Not possible. The USB connection only allows for data transfer between the computer and the device, it cannot function as a gateway to the Internet.

TS4080 Try to use iMac with Thunderbolt cable as a display and it goes black

For work I have a MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011. I connected a Thunderbolt cable to both the MacBook Pro and iMac. When I press Command F2 to use the iMac as my main screen, the iMac just goes dark. No screen at all. I can only get out of using Command F2.
What am I missing. How can I used my iMac as external display for my MacBook Pro.

All firmware current on that late 2011 MacBook Pro? This EFI firmware update addresses Thunderbolt target display mode, and other issues.
