Ethernet connection to iMac has failed

I have 4 year old iMac running Yosemite and connected via ethernet to a Verizon Fios router.  All has functioned well until yesterday when the ethernet connection failed.  I can still connect via wifi if I unplug the ethernet cable.  With the cable plugged in I get a yellow indicator for both ethernet and wifi. Unplugging the cable lets the wifi signal to turn green and connect.
What is wrong with the ethernet connection and how do I test and fix it?  I tried another cable which did not fix the problem.
Thanks, AHCMac

When the ethernet is plugged in does the connectivity light go on.. at least on the router.. Macs are not sophisticated enough to have connectivity light I guess.
Do you have anything else in the house connected by ethernet?
Or something you could test and prove the issue is Mac not router??
If the Mac is the issue.. go to the ethernet configuration .. give me a couple of screenshots.
Try setting the speed down.. by changing to manual configuration.. and set to 100mbit or even 10mbit..

    Hello,
i am trying to connect to my corporation VPN Server " ISA 2006" using windows 8.1 client built in VPN,  but its returned the following error:
Event ID 20227: dialed a connection named "VPN connection Name" which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 789.
VPN connection is working fine with windows XP and windows 7 with no issue , this error is only appear when try to connect to using windows 8 client machine.
this error is shows only on windows 8.1 client , same procedures used to enroll the certificate from internal CA " IPsec Type" is followed .
below are the  ISA server specifications:
    VPN Server : ISA 2006.
    windows Server version 2003.
appreciate your quick help and reply .
    Thanks

    Thanks for your reply.
i would like to add another point for this case, that when we are trying to enroll a certificate from internal CA web enrollment directly using windows 8 " internet explorer 11"  , its install a certificate without Digital
Signature and non-repudiation in key usage property, then when try to connect , its will give the above error 789 ..
when try to enroll a certificate into windows 7 " internet explorer 10" and then export and import  this certificate into windows 8.1 machine "with the name of
windows 8.1 machine" into windows 8.1 machine, the VPN is working normally and without issue.
The properties of the Certificate are difference between windows 7 machine and windows 8 machine is key usage missing the Digital Signature and non-repudiation properties when enroll
from windows  8.1 " internet explorer 11", this is in fact because of
we don't have an option for key usage " both" when subment a certificate on web enrollment page from windows 8 machine ,, the only option available is exchange "
no signature and both option available "
i believe that there is something wrong when using windows 8.1 internet explorer 11 so its gave a certificate with wrong key usage property .
appreciate your quick help in this .
    thanks

  • How to resolve "connection to server has failed"?

How do you resolve "connection to server has failed" when you access your email.

Quit the mail app completely and reboot the iPad.
From yoyr home screen - Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the mail app. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Launch mail again and see of you can access your email.
If that doesn't work, turn mail off, restart your iPad, turn mail on again and try again. Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Mail>Off. After you restart the iPad, follow that route back to turn mail on again.

    Ian,
Make sure the SAP license server is running. You can check this in the Service Manager running on the Task Bar.  If not go to All programs > SAP folder  > Server Tools > Service manager.
Also check the user id you are using to log into DTW has the license set inside SAP.

  • TS3899 the connection to server has failed

I have tried deleted the email accounts registered to both my phone and ipad and reinstalling them. I've also switched off both devices by the hard reset. I've deleted all of my mail and I am still getting this 'the connection to server has failed' when i go into the mail app, and when i try to send an email it doesnt allow me either. I am not a techie - what else can i do?

    Hello Madi_kay2030,
I recommend this article to help troubleshoot what might be happening.
iOS: Unable to send or receive email
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3899
The symptoms described a a bit different than what you describe but the troubleshooting is relevant.
    Restart the iOS device.
Tap Safari and attempt to load a webpage to ensure that the device has Internet access. If you're unable to load a webpage, try the Wi-Fi assistant.
    Try an alternative Internet connection.
If your email is provided by your Internet provider, try connecting from the home network.
If your iOS device has an active cellular data plan, try to disable Wi-Fi:  Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn off Wi-Fi.
If not, try a different Wi-Fi network.
Log in to your email provider's website to ensure that the account is active and the password is correct.
Delete the account from Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then add the email account again on the iOS device.
If you're still unable to send or receive email, contact your email provider and verify the account settings are correct. You will need to gather this information (PDF).
    Additional Information
Using more than one device to check the same POP email account may create a lock-out issue that is easily resolved.

  • Ethernet connection from iMac to pc transfer question

I'm going to be getting an iMac shortly.
I currently have a Windows PC.
I'm sure I read somewhere that its possible to connect a Mac and a Windows PC together with an Ethernet cable.
What I'm wanting to do is,  rather than transfer my music, photos, documents and other stuff to an external hard drive (plus the time it would take to copy the stuff to the external hard drive) and then copy the stuff onto my iMac, I was wondering if there is a way of been able to connect the iMac and the PC together with an Ethernet cable and  have both the machines switched on and basically use the Mac to access the hard drive on the Windows PC to then copy the desired information over to the iMac.
I know there is a Migration Assistant application, but I would rather just copy the stuff over that I'm wanting, then at least I know what's been copied over.
If its possible to connect a Mac and a Windows PC together with an Ethernet cable and from there access the information on the Windows PC's hard drive and copy it over to the Mac. If its possible, could someone provide me with the instructions on how to do this please?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help everyone, really appreciate the help
I already have an external hard drive that would hold everything. Its just I thought it would take a while to copy the stuff over from my Windows PC onto the EHD, then copy the stuff back off of it to my iMac, and thought if I could have linked the iMac and the PC together, the copying would only need to be done once.
I had an idea yesterday. I have a 3.5 inch hard drive caddy/enclosure. My Windows PC is very easy to get into has its got a full side access panel which removes with two thumb screws. I thought I could remove the drive from my Windows PC, place it in the caddy/enclosure and then connect the caddy/enclosure to my iMac, I could then simply access the information and copy it over to my iMac. This would allow me to copy only the required stuff, I would only be copying stuff over once (rather than twice if I were to copy from my PC to a EHD and then to my iMac). The drive would be in the NTFS format (as its been used on a Windows system) but from my understanding Mac can read drives formatted in this, it just cannot write to it without third party software. Would the removing drive, placing it in a caddy/enclousure idea work OK?
Yes that is a great idea, I'd recommend going that route!

  • 2wire wireless- Airport Extreme- ethernet connection to iMac - how?

I have AT+T's DSL router that has wireless capabilities (802.11g, not n). I'm trying to use the new (802.11n version, although I'm not using n for this obviously) airport extreme to extended my wireless network to give me a wired access point to my old iMac (no wireless card).
So far the best I can do is get the airport extreme on the wireless network with a green light, but I can't get a wireline connection to land on this network. I'd even be ok with the airport extreme was a router that made the wired ports on a different network that would then route out to the wireless network.
When I connect a wired device to the airport extreme, it comes up with a 169.254.94.121 address. The wireless network is 192.168.1.x. The airport extreme does get it's 192.168.1.68 address on the same network as the 2wire. I've even forced my iMac into having an 192.168.1.80 address, but it can't ping the airport extreme's 192.168.1.68 address, so obviously the airport extreme isn't behaving how I would like. I even fired up WireShark on the connection, but it looks like the airport extreme won't even talk to it in any way; I was hoping to find the IP address on the wired side of the AX.
Basically I'm trying to use the airport extreme completely backwards from the usual setup. Wireless to wired instead of wired to wireless.
    Here's what I have:
Airport Extreme - Join a wireless network, security is WPA2, and it's on the network (as seen by 2wire)
Can I get the wired connections on the airport extreme to be an extension of the wireless network or even as another NAT routed connection?
DSL router (2wire) that sends wireless-> Airport Extreme (join a wireless network) -> wired connection to iMac.
Why am I doing this? No phone line connection even close to my iMac.

I had to jump straight into the manual configuration, but it does show Wireless mode: Join a wireless network. And the 2wire shows it as a device connected to that network.
    Connect using: Wireless Network
Ok, I'm still a bit confused. On the AEBSn, the only options available for Connect Using (found on the Internet > Internet Connection tab) are: Ethernet or PPPoE; For Wireless Mode (found on the AirPort > Wireless tab) are: Create a wireless network, Participate in a WDS network, Extend a wireless network, or Off. Unlike the AirPort Express or Time Capsule, there should NOT be an option for "Join a wireless network."
So at this point I think it is extending my wireless network. I just can't figure out how to get the wired ethernet ports to be on that same network.
Regardless, when configuring for "Join a wireless network," the base station would join as a wireless client, not as a means to extend the wireless range of the exiting wireless network. Since this is not the way to set up a WDS, the Ethernet ports on the AEBSn would not be enabled for sharing Internet connectivity.
WDS is not an option as the 2wire router doesn't seem to be able to handle that.
Then it appears that there will not be an option to create a WDS no matter which vendor's router you try to configure the 2Wire to work with. Sorry!

  • Ethernet Connection to iMac does not work if wireless is on!

I have a Linksys modem ethernet router which I use to connect an ethernet cable to a hub which is then connected to my iMac and my Xbox. (It is also connected to my Windows PC via USB) When I connect my xbox wirelessly with 2 wireless access points Xbox live works fine wirelessly but the ethernet connection to the iMac stops working. Does the wireless signal interfere with the ethernet connection? and is there any way to fix this?

Are you certain that you have a router?
The wireless connection should have no effect on your Ethernet connection.

  • Ethernet connection on iMac

    Hi,
    This is kinda unrelated but:
I have an iMac and I currently connect to the internet with the built in wifi card. This is kinda dumb as ethernet is faster and I have a desktop.
I have looked at some HomePlug devices (for wired connections over electrical wiring). Can someone reccommend one and comment on the speed difference between a HomePlug device and actual ethernet wiring. Also, how well do these devices work? Or is there a better way to string cables across a house?
I also looked at a Wireless N router from Netgear. Thanks.

Can you explain what you meant by your last paragraph?
Well, falco223, you were replying to yourself...
But I think you meant MY last paragraph where I talked about a tool to crimp on connectors.
Assuming you install a wall box into the wall with a finished wall plate with an ethernet JACK on it, this is usually not much of a problem. There are many brands of such wall plate/ethernet jacks out there where you terminate the cable easily with simple tools. However some brands require you to have a special tool to punch the wire ends down onto insulation-displacement type contacts. Trying to attach the wires on these without the proper tool is just asking for trouble down the road.
From this jack on the face plate, you plug in a short ethernet cable from the wall jack to the port on the computer.
The other way to go is to omit the wall box/face plate altogether, bring the cable up out of the crawl space with enough length to reach the computer, and then attach an ethernet PLUG to the end of the cable. This more often requires a special tool, although even then, there are some brands that let you do this with more simple tools.
Speaking of the proper tools, I once bought a plastic handled crimping tool from Radio Shack for these connectors and the handles flexed together before you could squeeze the tool together hard enough to get a proper crimp. (Seating 8 wires simultaneously.) At the other end of the spectrum was an all metal hand tool made by AMP (about $400 way back when...) that wouldn't release until the crimp was squeezed all the way (so you couldn't undercrimp.) You definitely get what you pay for.
This method is perhaps simpler, has less connectors involved (not the extra short cable), which is always desireable with ethernet, but has the disadvantage that if you move your computer location later, you are left with an ugly cable sticking out of an unfinished hole in the floor or wall, as opposed to a nice unused face plate on the wall just like the unused AC sockets or telephone jack face plates everywhere in a typical house.

  • Slow connection speed imac but not macbook

Slow connection speed on my imac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo running 10.6.8, I get download of 15mbs and upload of 9mbs but on my macbook pro 2.8ghz intel core i7 on the same desk I am getting 33mbs and 10mbs!
Can anyone help me out on this, thanks in advance.

The two key numbers here are: 1) Transmit Rate: 59 which is the current maximum bandwidth of the wireless connection in Mbps, and 2) The MCS Index: 6 which indicates that the iMac's connection to the BT Home Hub wireless is only using a single spatial steam. Forget the techo mumbo jumbo, your iMac is much more capable than that.
You should expect a Transmit rate closer to 130 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz radio. At least this explains the poorer performance of the iMac. I would venture to say that if you temporarily connected the iMac to the BT using an Ethernet connection the iMac would equal or exceed the MacBook Pro's bandwidth performance.
Has this always been an issue or something that has just recently started happening?
