Ethernet connectivity issues

Hi
We've just setup our hi-speed internet and plugged in my one laptop, it worked flawlessly immediately.
When we took the same ethernet connection to another Powerbook, both with OS 10.4.8, it didn't pick it up. On the laptop that doesn't work the ethernet connection is not being recognized, the one that works has an address.
The connection that doesn't work is on a latop that was configured to work with the wireless connection at work, not sure if that makes a difference.
I'd really appreciate some help with this as we're new here and need the internet for setting things up.
Thanks in advance
Any ideas as to how I can solve this?

What kind of high-speed connection?
If it's cable, the cable companies, for some unknown reason, continue to lock their boxes to the first device they see. This means that if your MacBook is the first device the cable modem sees, then that's the ONLY thing it will see until it's power-cycled. It's a ridiculous situation, with an annoying workaround.
(The other solution, of course, is to get a NAT router of some sort... it talks to the cable modem and shares the connection amongst multiple other machines behind it, which the cable modem never sees directly).

  • Ethernet connectivity issue with Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS)

Just recently updated my OS to Yosemite, and am now having ongoing problems connecting to my company's Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS).
I'm having no other issues connecting to outside server's via wifi or ethernet, but once I connect to our local business server I lose internet connection and also my email account goes offline (Microsoft Outlook 2011). Sometimes the connection will intermittently return, but will be very slow and won't load images. I had no connection issue's before the update.
    Anyone experienced a similar problem?

"That depends on what what resources you use the server for."
    - I will be using the printer for print sharing and file sharing. There is an estimating application I will load on a Mac Mini and will want to share that to other desktops.

  • Ethernet connection issues after installing Mountain Lion

After installing Mountain Lion I can't get my iMac to connect by ethernet. It says that no cable is connected. The cable/connection is fine. When I plug in my MacBook Pro running Lion, the ethernet connects just fine.

same exact problem.  in fact, my iMac24 (2009) worked flawlessly until I installed the latest update to Mountain Lion.  I then checked my MBAir (2011) and it too has a problem when using the USB/Ethernet adapter.  Neither can get an ethernet connection.  I deleted my network preferences and rebooted my machine, played around with my Ethernet switch and even reboot my gateway/router.  I've never had to do any of this to my network until Mountain Lion.  Wireless is the only thing that continues to work on both machines.

  • Ethernet connection issue with iMac, OS 10.6.6

I can no longer connect to another iMac on our network that is running OS 10.6.6 from my iMac running OS 10.6.6 via Ethernet. It was fine until a couple days ago. I can connect to other iMacs running 10.5.x on the network via Ethernet, but not the 10.6.6 machine. I can connect to the 10.6.6 machine via wireless. Assuming it is not the cable because I can connect to the 10.5 machines. I have not done any software updates or other installs on either 10.6.6 machine.
    Any suggestions?

    It's easy!
In iPhoto, click on the photo in question.  Then go to the Photo pull-down menu and select "Duplicate".  I've highlighted it with a red arrow in the below picture.  iPhoto then will make a copy of the photo in question.  It will have the same name as the original photo, but will have the word "copy" added to the end.
At that point, just double-click on the copy of the picture.  The copy will open in Elements.  Do whatever work you want - on this copy.  When you are done, just save it back into iPhoto.
At that point, you have two copies of the picture in iPhoto.  There's the original picture, and there's the copy (with the word "Copy" in the title).
If you forget to make a copy of the picture, and find yourself in Elements working on the original picture, DO NOT save the changed picture back into iPhoto.  You would lose the original picture.  Use the "Save As" command to save the changed picture to the desktop.  Change the name so it includes the word "copy".  Then re-import it back into iPhoto.
Do not try to use the Elements "Save As" command to save the changed picture back into iPhoto.  You can do it, but iPhoto won't know the changed picture is there.  (I've done it, unfortunately.)  Since the changed picture isn't in the iPhoto index, iPhoto won't be able to produce the picture in the future.  You can use the Open Recently Edited File command in Elements to open this picture, and re-save it to the desktop.   Change the name so it includes the word "copy".  Then re-import it back into iPhoto.

If you bought the MBP new 3 weeks ago, it should have come with Mountain Lion already installed. Did you update your MBP to the newly released 10.8.4 update? If not, what OS were you running before the upgrade, and what version of Mountain Lion do you have now?

  • Web service issues with two live Ethernet connections

    Running OSX Leopard 10.5.3 on a Quad-core G5.
Configuring Web services, I am running into issues while having two simultaneous Ethernet connections active.
My first E-net connection is a LAN address; the second is a external WAN IP.
I've created one website under the "Web" service and made it active on all IP addresses (*).
Under this config, I can only connect to my site from inside of my LAN. External machines try to connect and simply time out.
I know that my DNS is configured correctly, because--and here's the crux--whenever I turn off my LAN connection under System Prefs -> Network, external clients can immediately hit the website without a hitch. It's only when both connections are active that external clients time out.
    Any input appreciated.

This sounds like a routing issue - the server is trying to route all replies over the internal network, not the external network.
Do you have a router/gateway address specified in System Preferences -> Network for the internal NIC? If so, remove it - you should only have one default router set and it should be on the interface that gets you to the outside world.
You can also try reordering the network interfaces in System Preferences -> Network. Use the little gear wheel in the lower left corner to 'Set service order' then drag the interfaces into the order you want them to be used.

  • Mac Mini Ethernet SSL connection issues

    Hi,
Up until recently I have been using my Late 2012 Mac mini with a WiFi connection. Recently though I've had reason to switch to a Gigabit Ethernet connection (short version, moved from UK to Canada, living with in-laws and they have a crappy wireless router that can't hold a stable connection for more than a few hours).
However, I'm getting a really odd Ethernet network issue where my mac will "corrupt" SSL connections. This normally manifests itself in web pages not fully downloading, images becoming corrupted, or errors when downloading files. The last one is particularly hurting as I have been doing some heavy downloading of DMG files and other installers, all of which are a 100% guaranteed fail with DMG files reporting as being corrupted if I try to open them.
I have also lost my time machine backup as OSX has reported that this has failed verification and needs to be created new; I accepted creating a new one (reluctantly) and the backup now fails to complete every time it runs - either the wireless cuts out or the SSL connection corrupts the backup.
I have a 16-port GigE Switch (Netgear GS116) with a number of computers and the home modem plugged into this.
I've tried the following to look at this:
I've tried (and tested) a number of different Cat5e and Cat6 cables. These all work fine with other Windows / Linux machines and according to my cable tester all check out. 100% of the cables I own produce the error leading me to believe that it's not a cable problem.
Problem occurs even if the switch is bypassed and the mac plugged directly into the modem.
Problem does not occur (for web pages and small downloads) when plugged into wireless - this is just sloooow and as the router seems to develop issues with DNS over WiFi, I have to reset it every few hours so long term downloads fail.
I found an article (which I have now lost the URL for) where someone suffered intermittent network issues with Ethernet that they resolved by un-checking the "Enable automatic connection" on the 802.1X page of the network settings. This appeared to help for a couple of days and I enjoyed fast Ethernet and downloads once more. However, today the problem is back in force.
I am able to download files from a windows machine (well, except for downloads via the App store) and then transfer them over the network to the mini with no problems at all - the corruption issue only seems to occur when SSL is involved.
So I'm wondering what it could be and how I would go about diagnosing the issue. I'm more familiar with Windows / Linux systems, having not owned a Mac since the days of System 7 - the mini was bought so I could play with learning XCode and try my hand at Mac software development.
    Thanks in advance,
    ~MrBasset.

  • Ethernet works, wireless does not.  Internet connection issues.

This is my very first post, I hope it will be helpful and save people the grief that I went through.
Yesterday, on Wednesday, for some reason my MacBook "AirPort" would show full bars at the top of the screen but when I opened Safari or iTunes, I had no connection. What's weird is that I had never changed the settings since getting my laptop a year ago and they were locked as well.
I connected through Ethernet cable directly into my WRT54G linksys router and the connection was good. What was strange is that my wife's MacBook had no problems connecting wirelessly.
I tried everything I could think of. Rebooting my computer. Restarting the router and cable modem. Tinkering with the TCP/IP numbers. I updated my OS from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5 and updated Safari and iTunes. Nothing worked.
My wife and I went through every single post on the Apple forum discussions site. We tried some interesting things. Putting a $ character before the password. Changing the DNS server numbers. Doing stuff in the unix console. Changing the time on my computer. Nothing worked.
I booted from the Applications disc that my MacBook came with and did the Hardware Diagnostic Test. No hardware issues, thank goodness.
We tried everything we could think of. Finally, I gave in and called the Apple store closest to me, they transferred me over to Apple Support and I spent 2 hours on hold. I got fed up and called, while still on hold with my phone, with my wife's phone. I got a recorded message, "Sorry our offices are closed." That was quite frustrating to hear.
So I got online through my Ethernet connection and booked an appointment at the Apple store to see a Apple Genius. Went to bed hoping that the next day, I could boot my MacBook and wirelessly connect miraculously.
The next day (today), I gave the wireless connection a try. Same problem. Full bars, no connection.
    Off to the Apple store.
At the Apple store, my Genius guy connected my MacBook to their store internet wirelessly and then tested the connection. It worked. Then he ran Disk Utility to verify/repair disk permissions.
Apparently, he says he runs Disk Utility once a week to fix disk permission problems on his own computers. Why would I have disk permission problems when I'm the only user on my own computer? He states that when separate programs are run, they all access user permissions and some programs that are buggy alter these permissions or files when they're not suppose to.
Apparently, according to Disk Utility, that's what happened and my permissions thing could not be repaired.
    * * * The **ONLY SOLUTION** was a re-installation of system software. * * *
So, I brought my laptop home and did a re-installation. Reboot your laptop with the boot disc the computer came with, by holding down the "C" key after you turn it on. For some reason it took a few minutes just to boot from the boot disk, it felt like I was holding down the "C" key forever. The re-insall took about 50 minutes.
    The problem was FIXED.
The only thing that I appear to have lost are the desktop pictures that I downloaded and put in the Library -> Desktop Pictures folder. Everything else appears normal so far.
I'll be running Disk Utility more often from now on. Apple Genius guy says that Disk Utility should be run after booting from the boot disc because it will be more thorough than running it when booting off your laptop.

So, the same problem occurred and in a relatively shorter time than before. I began to think that something is causing this problem.
My theory is that it is a VMWare software issue. What I've been doing differently recently is using it in "Unity" mode as opposed to "Full Screen" mode. My guess is that the program is modifying my wireless permissions and screwing it all up.
So, what I've done is set the "Network Adapter" to "Host-Only". This denies the VMWare program internet access but still allows file sharing between the Windows virtual environment and the Mac hard drive.
Then I had to re-install Mac OS X all over again to fix the wireless settings/permissions mess.

  • Connectivity issues caused by coax, will Verizon install ethernet line to the second floor?

Lately i've been having connectivity issues(bad lag, pages stop loading) and the problem appears to be the coax line that is running between my ONT(in the garage) and office(two floors up) .  How do i know it's the coax? Well, when the router is in the office and  I ping yahoo.com, i get an average of 120ms, ~10% packet loss. Then I moved the actiontec router to a 3 foot cable directly attached to my ONT and I get 20ms, zero packet loss. Unless im missing something it seems like there is a problem with the lines in my house and their ability to do internet over coax. My FIOS TV service works fine. I have tested all my other coax lines and they all have the same issue except for the one in the living room, however i cant use that line because wireless doesn't reach the office. So the only solution im seeing is to run an ethernet line from the ONT directly to the office. The distance is at most 75ft so signaling should not be an issue. Will Verizon install the ethernet line for me or will I have to do it myself? I feel like im not getting proper service and Verizon should be responsible for fixing it. If anyone here has other suggestions to remedy my problem please let me know. Thx guys!

I can't answer the question about Verizon running Cat5 for you.  I'm sure someone else here will have that answer.  But some thoughts about the problem you're seeing.
Is the coax from the garage to your office reasonably new and in good shape?
Have you tried changing the connectors at both ends?
How are splitters configured?  I would think you should have the router on one 3.5 dB leg of the first splitter and the rest of the house off any other splits.  And a splitter could be bad.  You could try getting a coax "barrel" from Radio Shack and, as a test, bypassing any splitter in between the ONT and the router in your office.
Is the run from the garage to the router about the same as the run to the living room?  I'm wondering if the router itself might be defective and require more signal than it should.
FWIW, it sounds like I have a similar setup to yours and it just works.  I know some prefer Cat5 ONT-router for various reason but I like the Verizon default configuration for it's simplicity and for the fact that Verizon will support it if support is needed.   I wonder what tech support would say about your situation if you could get past tier 1 script reading.
    Good luck.
    P.S.
The more I think about it the more I suspect a splitter is your problem.  I say that because if I understand you correctly, you get the same results at the end of every piece of coax except in the living room.  Right?  That leads me to think the connection to the ONT is getting screwed up somewhere that it's being split.  FWIW.
    edit & P.P.S.
This is the "barrel" I had in mind to bypass any splitters for troubleshooting purposes:

  • EA6900 Internet Connection Issue - Desktop connected via ethernet cable

    Hi there,
I have an HP p6837c, 64-bit OS with Windows 7 Home Premium. It is directly connected to the EA6900 via ethernet cable. My internet connection constantly drops (as in variably every 5 seconds to 5 minutes) then re-establishes itself. I have no internet connection issues when directly connected to the modem. All of the wirelss devices that are connected via the EA6900 are working without any issue. My husband's laptop, which has Windows 8.1, functions with no problem when directly connected to the EA6900 via ethernet cable. We've tried swapping out the cable. We've tried adjusting the MTUs per Support's suggestion. Nothing has solved the issue
Any thoughts on what the issues might be? Settings? The version of Windows? Any help would be much appreciated!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router and PC, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.
    Router and Wired Configurations
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only.
PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
    Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

There are a number of posts in the Leopard forum from people with direct experience with upgrading from Panther to Leopard. Here is a relevant thread from there that should reassure you.:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1418714
Your system should be fine for Leopard, but you will probably need a current version of Photoshop if you don't already have it. See this download:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/products/pdfs/leopardsupport.pdf
Also, Leopard doesn't run Classic (OS 9) apps.
One caveat - first make a bootable backup "clone" of your present system onto an external firewire drive so you can recover if anything goes wrong. You can use the "Restore" tab of Disk Utility to make such a clone, and there are also Panther-compatible versions of Carbon Copy Cloner (v 2.3) and SuperDuper (v 2.1.4), both excellent for this.
It's even possible to a create second Panther clone on a different external volume to create a "dual-boot" system, using that volume to continue to run old applications that you can't run with Leopard.

  • We have an airport extreme wifi in house, but also want to set up a hardwired ethernet connection for gaming and streaming of netflix.  The computer only sees one or the other not both at same time.

We have a new iMac 2.9ghz and are running an airport extreme set up in house with several express entenders.  The problem is that our son is streaming netflix and doing on line gaming and hogging all the band width.  Time Warner tech suggested a hard wired ethernet connection to computer base sattion next to computer so that it can have direct conenction to internet.  After much fishing of wire the connection worked great, but the wifi connection for the house is gone.  I unplugged the ethernet connection and everything is fine.  I read the articles about adjusting network preferences, but the issue seems to be in the extreme not in the computer.  the connection goes from cable modem to extreme, from extreme to house and to hard wired conenction to other computer.  Do we need a splitter before the extreme?

No. Something else is going on.
Your son may be hogging all the bandwidth but your wireless network should never simply disappear. Moreover, if your son isn't doing anything the available bandwidth for other devices should remain unaffected.
I suspect that something is miswired, and from what you describe I suspect that link is between the Extreme and the "other computer".
The way to accomplish what you propose is
Modem > Ethernet cable to Extreme's WAN port
Extreme's LAN ports > wired Ethernet devices.
There should be nothing but an Ethernet cable linking an Extreme LAN port and any other wired device. If you run out of available LAN ports on the Extreme, you need to by an "Ethernet switch" - they are not expensive, but don't call it a "splitter" or you will only confuse yourself. The switch would be connected to one of the Extreme's LAN ports, and you would connect additional devices to it. You can also use one of your Expresses for that purpose, assuming it is the current generation model with two Ethernet ports.
