Ethernet connectivity using Belkin Express Dock

If you find this post helpful, please add to the thread.
My issue:
I am using a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock and was unable to get the ethernet port to work.  I spent hours on the phone with Belkin support but ultimately solved the problem on my own.  When asked, I was told that Belkin support staff doesn't have any Apple computers, nor can they send or receive eMails.  Enough Belkin support bashing for now, I do like some of their products.
After connecting the Thunderbolt Express Dock to my laptop, all ports were working except I was unable to get my ethernet working.  I could use wireless connectivity, but being old school, I prefer a physical connections.  The solution is simple once you know it.
I disconnected everything from my laptop, went into System Preferences / Network.  Depending on your location (top pull down), there are various interface options that appear on the left side.  Typically an active interface is indicated by a green dot to the left of the interface.  A red dot indicates an interface that is inactive.  I started with a new location with no interfaces.  Clicking the "+" at the bottom left of the window, you get a list of available interfaces.  For a Retina MacBook Pro, you get the following selection:
When I pluged the Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor into one of my Thunderbolt ports, the list of choices expands to include "Thunderbolt Ethernet".  In other words the list is dynamic based on what the hardware configuration is.  One of the reasons I bought the Belkin Express dock was to eliminate the need for the Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor, but I wanted to go slowly and see what changed as I connected devices back to my laptop.
I then removed the Apple adaptor and connected the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock to my laptop, hit the "+" and got the following list:
Notice both "Thunderbolt FireWire" and "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller".  I selected the very poorly labeled Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller as my interface and everything worked perfectly.  I think also added in the other interfaces that I am likely to use and saves this configuration as my new "Location".  All is good now.
The point of the story for Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock users is that the ethernet interface is very poorly labeled as Broadcom NetXtreme.
The point of the story for anyone having internet connectivity issues it that you might want to try comparing what possible interfaces your computer allows if nothing is connected to the computer and then again after you connect a device capable of providing connectivity.
I hope this helps!!

  • Thunderbolt to USB3 using Belkin Express Dock

I am using the Belkin express Dock Thunderbolt to USB3 . My 2011 laptop 2.5GHz-i7 with 10.7.5  does not mount the Seagate 2TB USB3 drive using the Belkin Express Dock.  If I plug the USB3 cable directly into the Laptop it will mount the Seagate drive as USB 2…  Yuk
Am I missing a driver?   Disk Utility will not see the Seagate drive when plugged thru the Thunderbolt into the Belkin Express Dock and then out the USB3.

  • Wireless to ethernet connection using airport express

Here is what I have and what I wish to do. I have a Mac Mini intel duo with Airport extreme card Connected to road runner via a ethernet router. My wife has a window running XP with out airport extreme. Can I use airport express to share the internet with my wife's computer by using an ethernet cable from my wife's computer to the airport express, remotely to (another room). Utilizing my computer as a base station?

Fordmanduo, Welcome to the discussion area!
    No that will not work.
The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network.
OS X's Internet Sharing (via Mac mini) is not compatible with WDS.

  • Belkin Express Dock

I had read in several places on the net where the Belkin Express Dock was a wonderful device providing two Thunerbolt ports, a Firewire 800 port and some USB3 ports.  Various pictures I found on the internet showed one Thunderbolt port on the front and other pics showed two in the back along with the other ports.  I bought the thing and I just opened it up.  There are two Thunderbolt ports on the back alright but there is no input port on the front.  I went to the Belkin website and looked for some info on how to set it up thinking maybe there's a hidden port somewhere.  Nope.  They show how to connect the dock to the computer using one of the two Thunderbolt ports.  This leaves me right where I started, with one available Thunderbolt port, only now the available port is on the dock rather than the computer.  That can't be right.  Where are my two Thunderbolt ports?  I gotta be missing something here.  Yes?

Post in Belkin's forums - http://www.belkin.com/us/support-article?articleNum=10057 or download the dock's user manual if one did not come with the one you purchased - http://www.belkin.com/us/contact-support/update

  • How to share internet connection over wifi to an ethernet decive using airport express?

Hi i have a device that it can only be connected to the internet via ethernet in a diferent room (and far) where my primary internet connection is. I have my network configured like this: cable modem >>>  connected via ethernet >>> to airport time capsule >>> connectes via wi fi >>> to airport express last generation "n" >>> connected via ethernet cable to device. The problem is that i'm not having internet conection in my ethernet connected device. Anyone know if I have to configure something in some special way or if i'm doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    Guido

    It should work fine..
To figure this out, check if the Express is connected by wireless properly and getting an IP.. you will see that in airport utility.
Make sure you are set to either extend or join the wireless network. The Express should then pass an IP to the "device".
No luck start over.. reset everything to factory.
If the TC is older model use 7.6.1 firmware.. it works much better for extend wireless.
Use short names.. 2-20 characters no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Then set the Express again in extend wireless mode.
It is pretty easy in v6 airport utility. Look at the posts from Bob Timmons on how to extend wireless.. he must have answered those question a thousand times in the last few years.
Here is one I did. https://discussions.apple.com/message/24161378#24161378

  • ITunes 10.6.3.25 on ethernet connection loses airport express speakers but iPhone 4 airplay works

    Hi,
I have started experiencing a problem this past week (Aug 2012) that I see sometimes reported here.  When I run iTunes 10.6.3.25 on a Win7 machine that is connected by ethernet to my router, the airport express speakers would regularly disappear.  I can always connect to these airport express via airplay from my iPhone 4.  In fact when the airplay speakers disappear from iTunes on the ethernet-connected machine, I can reliably make them reappear by turning on the Music app on the iPhone.  But after a while the airplay speakers would disappear again.  On a Win7 laptop connected via wifi to the network the same version of iTunes seems so far not to exhibit the same problem.
Has anyone discovered what the underlying problem is or found a solution?

I ran into the specific problem in another thread.  There are more than 100 connections from the apple TV's to iTunes.  You can do a netstat -a (windows or Mac), and verify the problem.  iTunes is smart enough to stop allowing more than 100 connections but stupid to allow the ATV to create so many connections.
Now for what you really want!  Set all of your ATVs to wifi only.  Even setting the iTunes host to wifi might help also.  I think that wifi is more unreliable, and forces connections to drop, keeping the count under 100.
I also turned off ip v6.  That could help you also.  I originally had problems on a Mac mini, and built a windows 7 box to try to fix the problem.  The wifi trick worked on both platforms.  Several of us have bug reports into apple.  I have a wired house also, and am very angry to NEED to use slow wifi to overcome this problem.  The ATV gen 3 has been able to keep up with 1080p over wifi, so it doesn't hurt too much.  What really hurts is spending over 40 hours troubleshooting this bug.

  • Trying to share internet connection using Airport Express

I have an internet connection via a Verizon Wireless broadband card in the Express Card slot in my MacBookPro. I share this connection to my iMac via Airport and I have an Airport Express card connected to a printer & stereo. However, when I establish the Airport internet connection (internet sharing in System prefrences) it establishes a wireless network in the MacBook (I think) as evedinced by the Airport signal (fan) logo changing to a vertical arrow. This precludes connecting to the Airport Express (the Airport Express network is not shown in the Airport pull down menu, only the MacBook network). My question is: can I somehow share the internet connection using the Airport Express network???

ejagnut, Welcome to the discussion area!
Configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network created by your MacBook Pro. The directions can be found in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • More ethernet connections for airport express

I am looking to hook up an ethernet switch to an Airport Express to provide additional ports to connect devices such as a printer (which doesn't want to function consistently in Wi-Fi mode), and possibly a Blu-Ray player. Any problems with my thinking here?

As long as you have verified that the Ethernet port has been enabled on lthe AirPort Express, you can connect an Ethernet switch to the Express to accommodate additional Ethernet devices.
Keep in mind that your "Ethernet" connections will only support as much bandwidth as the wireless network allows. This will likely be far less than a direct wired Ethernet cable connection from the main router to the Ethernet devices.

I have a problem with PC connected to our

    I am using a Athlon 1100 With ASUS A7V-Board

When i am downloading patches form a Netra X1

the ethernet connection. The ethernet card
    just disconnects form the network.
    This happens with a 3Com 905 B and a
    Intel EtherExpress 10/100 (S?)
The 3Com can be reactivated by
    ifconfig elxl0 down unplumb
    ifconfig elxl0 plumb `cat /etc/hostname.elxl0` up
    With the Intel Card
    ifconfig iprb0 down unplumb blocks!!!
Since the same thing has happend a single time
with my "Workstation" (166 MMX, Intel 10/100) i
    suspect the switch.
has anyone made experiences like this ?

  • I have lost the correct proxy settings for the ethernet connection using Safari.  How do I get back to the original ethernet proxy settings?

I changed the ethernet proxy settings for Safari on my Mac Pro, when I was in a particular place that required extra security.  Now I cannot get the ethernet connection to work when back home.  The wireless connection works fine.  What are the original ethernet proxy settings.  How do I make the changes?
    Thanks

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click Change Settings next to Proxies. Select Automatically from the Configure pop up menu.
You may also have to select the Proxies tab. If any of the boxes are selected, deselect then click OK.

    Hi,
At you question : Lynksys 160-wr ore something....
This is something above my capabilities.
The way that tab is configured is AUTOMATIC.
Trying to do it manually require IP for rouer, and I dont't know how to get it, even if I perfectly know what an IP address is.
It is also required to enter IPV6 address, and there to I am lost.
Lastly there is the last tab, amaller bar that I don't know.
May be explain in what way, having this manually entered is different that automatic would make me understand correctly.  Then, may be indicate how to get these info to fill in.
But, I can say that I am now using APPLE TV-2, and that the first Lion 10.7 patch seems to have solved this.

  • 2nd dedicated ethernet connection using PCI card

I have a G5 with latest OSX and on a 1000baseT network. I need to access a PC RAID array directly without going through the network switch (it slows the throughput). I have purchased a PCI 1000baseT card and connected directly to the second port in the RAID. However, the RAID is also on the network.
The question: How do I connect to the PC RAID array with the PCI ethernet port only? Do I need a hub or another switch?
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thanks

    Hi Dmaster,
    Welcome To Apple Discussions!
Many questions need to be asked on this one.
What type of RAID array are we talking about?
    NAS? DAS? Controller?
Usually a PC DAS RAID array will be formatted with the built-in controller software and disks grouped into a LUN. The LUN(s) is presented to the OS and the OS will (or can) partition the space. The server's OS will also share out the volumes.
If you can interface with the controller directly (as in a NAS) it should be easy. A NAS has a server interface/controller which can share & manage the disk space
between multiple clients, but it has to be setup to do it, before you start using it.
If the current PC controls the disk array space, having another machine write data to the same disk sub-system without going through the PC is asking for trouble. You cannot have multiple systems controlling the same RAID array (block level data).
I would recommend getting a Gig switch, they're not that expensive anymore.
Another way is if you have another NIC card on your PC server, connect directly to the server's (and not the RAID array) second NIC card with your client and have at it.

  • Password for ethernet, connecting with AirPort Express?!

I live in a student-house, and normally connects with a cable to the wall (ethernet). I´ve got a password from the University where I study, and have to use this to connect with the ethernet.
My question; Can I place the ethernet-cable into the AirPort Extreme, and make it work on my mac, even though there´s a password? (can I type in this password somewhere during the installation?)
I´m no good at this, and I´m really really tired of having to use the cable on my mackbook....

Okey, than I wont try no more...
    Thank you so much!!

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • How can I use my ipad in a hotel that only has ethernet connections.    The apple store clerk told me that I can't use airport express unless I also have a computer with me in the hotel.

How can I use my Ipad in a hotel that only has ethernet connections?  The Apple store clerk told me that travel express won't work in my hotel unless I also have a computer.

The issue with the Airport Express (or any of the Apple routers) is that you need the Airport Utility to configure it.  Airport Utility works on OSX and Windows, but not on the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch.)  It will work, if you can preconfigure the Airport correctly ahead of time, but you'd be stuck if you did need to reconfigure while at the hotel.
You can use most any other router that is configured with a web page, which means you have a chance of configuring with Safari on the iPad.  If you want something somewhat portable, I use a "travel router" made by D-Link. The current model is the DAP-1350.  Other companies make similar travel routers, but I have no experience with the others.
