Ethernet- Firewire adaptor  Do they work in OSX?

Hi, after reading about the new macbooks I was thinking about getting one to replace my 2 year old macbook pro. But of course theres no firewire, I edit hdv video so no firewire is a no go. Then I read on a forum that there exists ethernet->firewire adaptors, a quick google search came up with one:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=205852397&SearchEngine=DealTime&Search Term=205852397&Type=PE&Category=Comp&Gad=0&dcaid=15891
I've never heard of converting ethernet into other interfaces and I don't know if the mac would recognize it, but it does seem like the only possible solution.

Ok, for some I agree, the white macbook is more than adequate.
But compare the specs of my black macbook from 2 years ago
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP23
with the specs of the white one for sale now
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP5
There's not much difference. Small increases in processor speed, bus speed and shared video memory. In the computer world I think it's fair to say that's outdated. I'm not saying it's an ancient slug. Since if I were, then my
macbook would be the primordial ooze from which that slug evolved
Bottom line, if someone is in the market for the new aluminum macbook,
and they want firewire, you can't just tell them to step back to the old
white macbook. It's just not a substitute at all.

  • Thunderbolt to firewire adaptor does not work when daisy chaining firewire devices

    Hi,
I just purchased the Thunderbolt to firewire adaptor for my new late 2012 iMac.
It works when connecting a single firewire device, but when I daisy chain another drive, the first drive disconnects and nothing mounts.
I am trying a Hitachi G-Raid and a couple of WD My Studio II hard drives. They all work when connected directly to the adaptor, but not when more than one drive if daisy chained with firewire.
Has anyone got firewire daisy-chaining working with a thunderbolt adaptor? (just to clarify I am not refering to thunderbolt daisy chaining, as the adaptor is an end-of-chain thunderbolt device).
    Thanks

    Yikes, that's sad to hear.
I can't test it, no TB here, but are all these drives self AC powered, ie. no bus powered drives?

  • Ethernet to Firewire adaptor/cable

A few days ado a lightning hit my house, and among other things, my iMac's ethernet port stopped working. I'm not exactly sure, but it looks like it would be expensive to get a new one working, so I was wondering if you guys know of any sort ethernet/fire adaptor or cable, so that I could still use a fast connection to my router, but using one of the firewire ports... Ever heard of anything like that?
    Thanks a lot.

What you need is an USB Ethernet adaptor. For example: http://www.amazon.com/BPI-USB-Ethernet-Adapter-Compatible/dp/B002KDGW34 You can buy this device at any computer store or online.

  • Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor no longer works

    Hi All,
After upgrading to Maverick I find my Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor no longer works. Network app insists the cable isn't connected but the cable works fine with other pcs (a Raspberry Pi for instance).  Any suggestions?
    R.

If you have access to the Companies Intranet then the Ethernet connection is working just fine. The computer is getting a valid IP address from the companies DHCP server.
You need to take this up with the IT staff as it seems whatever IP your computer is getting it is being block from going out to the internet.

  • Experience with thunderbolt to firewire adaptor - meeting expectations?

    Hello All,
This question goes primarily to both professional and home recording artists who have so patiently waited for the "once-mythical /now available on the online store" thunderbolt to firewire adaptor. Most of us new MBPR users are waiting for them to arrive, but has anyone used one and what is your experience?  I am curious as to how they work with various interfaces as well as anyone who is using the adaptor to record audio to an external drive or using it to connect an external drive for storage of samples for virtual instruments.
Thanks ahead of time for your insight!

I can answer both: things work as expected as long as you don't need it bus powered. my hard drives that have power adapters work fine (both FW 400 & 800) and my MOTU Ultralite Hybrid works via FW 400 as long as the Ultralite is plugged into the wall. Nothing i have tried so far works with bus power.

  • USB to Firewire adaptors

I've seen cables advertised as USB to Firewire adaptors. Can these be used to connect USB devices to a Firewire port? One of my USB ports is dead and the other can be flaky at times.
    Thanks
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Tar,
I'm afraid there are no such converters available that work in the required direction.
There is one I'm aware of which will run from a FW device to a USB2 ported computer, but associated software is for Windows only, as I understand it - see http://www.pixela-1.com/captycable/
It won't work in the reverse direction (which is what you would need), and, as I understand it, can only be used for connecting a video camera's FW port to a USB2 computer (by reporocessing the FW signal into video , and then sending this to the USB port) , not for other purposes such as general firewire devices like drives, burners, etc etc. So its not for you. Even to achieve only this it costs $120US.
There have been some "dual" firewire /USB hubs on the market but they all require you to have a cable to your computer's FW port and another cable to your computer's USB port to provide both forms of connection.
Your answers , I'm afraid, are to get the existing USB ports sorted out or to see if you can find FW peripherals to replace the USB ones.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • After 10.5.6 Firewire Soundcard doesn't work anymore !!!

    Hi Guys,
I work with Motu "896" and Presonus "Firebox" Soundcards and after the new update 10.5.6 nothing is working ....
I tried Many tricks like :
Reinstalling 10,5,6 combo version, nothing happen
    - Cycling power on Sound card... drive doesn't appear,
    - Different FireWire ports... drive doesn't appear,
    - Disk Utility... drive doesn't appear,
    - System Profiler... reports FIREWIRE BUS--> UNKNOWN DEVICE
Usualy, my Presonus sound card didn't need any drivers to work with osx,
i have contacted Motu online support, to check with them if it s a driver problem, they told me that they didn't know why Apple released this update, because they have so many problems with it, they notice that many firewire devices don't work or make problems with this update...
Is this a test from them to check how many people are using firewire ??? a test about their new policy about firewire ?
If anybody knows something to do, let me know please...

    Hello
After the 10.5.6 update I am only able to get my Motu Ultralite MK3 to work after a reboot
At first I thought I was loosing it when the system went into sleep mode
But, I have turned sleep mode off on the system
if I come back to the computer say after 8+ hrs, the system will not see the motu when it's turned on
if I reboot the system it works fine
I've ran extended diags on the system 2 times and it comes back clean
Motu has yet to respond to my trouble ticket

  • BT Ethernet Powerline Adaptor Issue

I have had a BT Home Hub 5 setup in my hallway for over a year now and I used to connect my computer and laptop to the internet via three Netgear powerline adaptoss which worked okay. I love online gaming so reliable high speed internet connection is essential. But, problems kept arising so I decided to replace the Netgear powerline adaptors with BTs broadband extender 500 kit.
Currently, I have one adaptor connected directly to my router, and two more upstairs in different rooms. I managed to setup the kit after some time due to a really unclear instruction manual and got the three lights on all of the adaptors green. However, the ethernet green light is continuously blinking...
The first day I experienced okay connection speeds, but today was the complete opposite! This happened throughout the day and I finally decided to try again later during an off-peak time at 11pm. Same result.
Firstly, the data light on the adaptor connected directly to the router sometimes goes orange, I understand this means medium transfer speed, but this didn't happen at all yesterday. Next, the adaptor in another room upstairs had an orange data light and sometimes all the lights switched off then back on again as if the adaptor was reseating itself?! My laptop connected to this adaptor could not connect to the internet at times and when I tried to view a simple Youatube video, it buffered and lagged! This has never happened before. Also, in the same room, when I tried to access the internet via the Wi-Fi with my tablet and laptop, the same issue arised - very slow internet. Let me remind you that I have not experienced this slow internet speed before.
Meanwhile, someone was watching Netflix in another room upstairs using the third BT ethernet adaptor. They said the streaming was buffer-free and perfectly fine.
I am very confused as to why the internet connection with was fine for someone else in my house using the broadband extender, but not for me. Could it be because I am using three BT broadband extender adaptors instead of the two? But when I used the Netgear adaptors, I used three as well and there were not as many issues than I am facing now...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.
p.s. All the BT powerline adaptors are coronary enacted directly to the lead rival rockets and I know for a fact that there are no problems with my devices that I use to try and access the internet.

Powerline adaptors are tricky things, as they rely on your mains wiring to carry the signal.  All sorts of things can affect the signal strength, and consequently the speed.
Interference from nearby appliances can affect the signal.  If possible, try another socket in the room.
As a general rule, sockets on the same ring are best.  The adaptors should work on different rings off the same consumer unit (mine do), but at a lower speed.
If you have a complicated wiring system with multiple distribution boards, then that may affect the speed a lot.  If you have a three-phase mains supply, then they are unlikely to work on different phases.

  • Cannot use Firewire Card on 10.2.8 OSX Wallstreet G3

I recently upgraded my G3 Wallstreet to 10.2.8. It currently has a minimal set of applications and I added Firefox which seems to run fine. Internet connectivity is great!
I bought and Adaptec AFW-1430A Firewire for Notebooks PCMCIA card. It came with a CD which just has OS 9 installer and extensions.
The card is recognized by the PB but the menubar icon drop down shows it as 'Unknown Vendor' (grayed out) and 'Firewire Controller' grayed out. The only option is 'Eject Card', which works fine.
I contacted their tech support which told me that the drivers for the card should be in OSX.
How can I figure that out?
Also, someone they asked me what my boot ROM is. System profiler doesn't show a boot room ID.

    footie,
I have a cheap FireWire card and it is not be recognized by the Wallstreet in 9.x unless the card is present and I restart. At this point, my FireWire HD is hot-swappable; I can mount/unmount it as long as the FireWire card is not removed...then I have to restart to get the card mounted.
The same card has no issues in 10.x, meaning the FireWire PC card itself is hot-swappable. However, perform a restart to cover all bases.
If you are working in OSX and the HD is not mounting...
    - Do you have the Finder Preferences set so HDs appear on the desktop? If not, the FW HD should still appear in a Finder window.
    - Is this a known-good HD?
    - Are you using the correct and known-good FireWire cable?
    - With the FW HD connected, open your System Profiler and see if the HD is reported.
    - Launch your Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Does the HD appear in the left column?
    - If you have installed the extensions for FireWire in 9.x, see if the FW HD will mount. These are the three necessary extensions:
    FireWire Enabler
    FireWire Support
    FireWire CardBus Enabler
Once they are installed and you have restarted, check your Extensions Manager to make sure they are enabled (they should be default).

I want to transfer data from my old Mac book pro to my new one using migrate.  The old computer doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Does the Thunderbolt to Firewire or the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work to connect them and transfer data?
    Thank you!

Yes, use a Firewire cable and the FW to Tbolt adaptor.

  • Screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
My screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite on my macbook pro late 2008
Can't solve it by my self..

I had noticed I was having this issue too, and my screensaver never kicking in, and just going to sleep with it never kicking in.
I had gone in and checked to see if any of the settings had got changed or deleted in the system upgrade, but they were all still set at what I had them at prior... so, did as some attempted above also, and adjusted the times for it to kick in, and still nothing.  Worked when I would hit 'Preview', but still not kick in at the interval time.
What I just did to get it to work, was just to simply go into System Preferences>Desktop & Screensaver, and just reselected the folder of images that I want to be used, in my case, a folder of images in my iPhoto.  And it now works.
Apparently, it wasn't working, because, even though it was still selected to use that folder in iPhoto, something must have changed in the upgrades, which might of had something to to with the iPhoto update too, where it had to update my iPhoto library upon relaunch... and my screensaver settings were set to access that older directed to folder within Library, that was updated in the new release... and so, just repointing it to that folder now in iPhoto, got it to work.
At least, that is my figurin', and I'm stickin' to it!

Printopia is another option but be aware that since these solutions effectively act as a print server and AirPrint receiver, they require a computer to be running on the same WiFi network.
Canon also has a couple of apps in the App Store that might facilitate this on non-AirPrint printers. Check out...

  • IOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change ?

iOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network, i.e. connected to the same wired/wireless router. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change this ? Means that the iPad and the Apple TV box both have to be in range of the wireless router when this wasn't a restriction before. Apple TV could be anywhere as long as it was connected to the same wireless router via ethernet cable. Seems like an unnecessary thing to restrict.

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • My iMac (late 2006) no longer boots from FireWire drives, although they contain all the system files.

My iMac (late 2006) no longer starts (boots) from Firewire drives, although they all contain a current system (Mac OS X 10.6.7). If the drives are connected with USB 2, they boot normally. The FireWire drives appear in the Start Volume program, but they do not boot. If I press and hold the Alt key while booting, only the internal drives and the USB drives appear as options. What can I do in order to boot from FireWire drives as I always could in the past?

I'd first recommend doing a SMC reset and if that doesn't work refer to:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10333969-263.html
    and
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/firewiretroubleshooting.html
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

    2. Ethernet : Same problem as with firewire and i have this: Conect to server - "Registered User" - ask me for Password ? No Password is setup on booth computer, but it refuse to conect : "Conection Failed" Unknown user, incorrect password ! Strange stuff...
Any help or advise would be great
Many thanks for help in advance !

To connect to another computer on your home network as a registered user, you need to enter the administrator's name and password for the computer you are trying access.
