Ethernet Gone Bad??

I haven't been able to connect my G3 500MHz iMac to the router via ethernet. OS 10.3.9 just says the ethernet cable is not plugged in, even when it is. The router does not show a connection, either. I ran the hardware test CD (v. 1.1) that came with the computer and upon testing the logic board it stopped due to error "unet/4/13." Other than the ethernet not working the computer runs fine. Does this error mean just the ethernet port is bad, or should I start backing up my hard drive because a logic board failure is eminent?

I tried an ethernet cable that I had used successfully with another machine and which had also been used successfully by my roommate's laptop until he let me use it to try connecting my computer. I did try connecting said ethernet cable directly to the cable modem and still no luck.
Are there any USB-to-Ethernet adapters out there that are Mac compatible? CompUSA carries a number of different brands, but they all specifiy various versions of Windows in their system requirements. Then again, as much as they do cost I might as well buy a wireless router.

  • Has my M1424WR router "gone bad"? - and its replacement "bad" out of the box?

I've had Verizon FiOS service for about 3 years now, and have had very few problems with it.  A few times I lost internet or TV during storms when lines came down somewhere, but that's about it.
The FiOS installer gave me an Actiontec M1424WR router and access port, with a coax connection to the outside box.  I have a multi-room DVR setup (2 DVRs that can "see" each other, and a third read-only STB), so as I understand it I have to use the Actiontec (good bye to my old Linksys router used with my high speed cable service).
I have 4 computers attached directly to the router and up to 8-10 wireless devices (cell phones, tablets, wireless printer, gaming devices, streaming media players, etc.) on my home network.  As such, I reset the router's SSID to the same one I had before, with 128-bit WEP security (a 16 char hex key).  I also am "advanced" enough to know how to go through the advanced settings and start the DHCP address allocation to start at 192.168.1.100 to allow several of my devices (network storage drive, wireless printer, gaming systems, etc.) to maintain locally static IP addresses like 192.168.1.3 through 192.168.1.9 that reconnect when the router is reset or rebooted.
All this worked beautifully for about 3 years, until last week.  The wireless network started dropping out - not just external internet access, but seeing other hosts in the home network - requiring a router reset to come back (or just a disable/re-enable of wireless service via the router settings at http://192.168.1.1).  However, the "Wireless" light on the router remains green.
Even the wired internet connection (the computer hooked up with an Ethernet cable, right next to the router) would lose its internet connection for 5-10 seconds at a time before resuming.  The multi-room DVR functionality would get spotty, too - until a reset, boxes couldn't see each other, playing back data from another box would be very slow or not come up at all.
After 4 goes of it with Verizon support via chat and phone (the experience of which I won't go into), which included a remote reset of my external access box by Verizon, I concluded that the router must have gone bad.
Last night, I went in person to a Verizon service station near me to swap the router, got back what they said was a "brand new" M1424WR, and installed it...  To get the same problem, actually worse.  The wireless drops out in about 5 minutes, the light is still green but no wireless hosts can ping each other or anything on the wider internet (like using Speedtest).  I can use my wired internet fine (no hiccups there, yet) but my multi-room DVR is not 100%, two boxes can see the other two but one of the DVRs can only see itself.
It seems unlikely but I have to believe this is still a problem with the router box itself, and I just got yet another flaky one back, right?  Nothing in my home network has changed (no new devices, services added, firmware updates, etc.) from last Tuesday when it was fine.
Any other ideas for me to try?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, I traced it to a "radio problem" with a client device.  It was a "Belkin F5D7330 802.11g Wireless Ethernet/Gaming Adapter" I was using to connect a network printer that has only an ethernet port to my wireless network (so I wouldn't have to run CAT5 cable to where the printer is situated).
To do this I had to remove/disable ALL my wireless devices and computers, then add them back in one by one...  It was frustrating because I'd forgotten that printer was actually connected wirelessly, I was used to thinking of it as connected via an ethernet cable since I "knew" that's what the printer supported.  I even unplugged my 2.4 GHz wireless phone base, which I actually believed to be the culprit.  I only remembered the printer's wireless adapter after everything else was removed.
But once I unplugged the Belkin's power, boom, my wireless network was back to normal!  And plugging it back in caused the problem again.  So it's bye-bye Belkin.

Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal???
I've had my Macbook for about 11 months now and i use it every day; its gone though about 420 cycles of charging and using the power, and i noticed the battrey preformance has decreased (as expected). The problem isn't sevear yet but it would comfort me knowing that i could replace the battery in the near future
Please contact me or answer the question if you know anything about this!

No only if they think under warranty/AppleCare, but your likely able to pay for a new battery if they have them, which they might not yet since it's such a new machine still.
BTW, I have a Early 2011 17" MBP, 27 months old, charges to 97% and has only 14 cycles.

  • Content engine fan gone bad? How to check health?

We deployed a CE-511 to a remote site.
The site contact told me one of the fans may have gone bad cause it sounds like "someone getting a tatoo".
"show power" or "show environment" doesn't work on the content engine.
I can't find anything in the syslog either.
Could someone please tell me how I can check the health / status of the system fans?
    thanks.

    Apple->About This Mac->More Info->System Report->Network->Wi-Fi
Look under INTERFACES which should give you information about your AirPort card.

  • Hard Drive Gone Bad (2nd one)

I have a macbook, purchased in May of 2006. I have already replaced the harddrive once and it has gone bad again. I have a flashing folder with a question mark upon start up.
I do not have the extended warranty, but am concerned about putting in a new drive to have it go bad in a year. Have there been reports of the heat causing hard drive issues. I have also had to replace the battery as it lost power to quickly.
I have another macbook that was purchased at the same time that has never had any problems. I want to know about any related issues when I take my computer to Apple tomorrow.

Took the computer in today. I asked if the drive was a Saegate, indicating that I knew about the problems with the drive. He pulled it out. Yup, the Seagate model. I explained I knew it was out of warranty, but wanted to know what they would do.
He checked with someone and they are replacing the drive for me at no charge. I was very nice, never acted like I expected anything. But I also made sure to mention this was the second drive to go bad, that my child's mini mac had a bad motherboard after a month. Yet we own three apple computers and three iPods. I think being nice about it and a good customer helped me.

  • Scanner gone bad?

    Hello all,
My nice niece is sending me photos to do something with for her wedding. She is scanning them at about 300 dpi and then emailing a few to me to look at before burning them all to disk and mailing them to me. I am opening in Preview then iPhoto.
They all look poor quality though in email. Horizontal lines and blotchy and pixelized etc.., Is this due to email doing something to them or are there some signs of a scanner gone bad that we could look for?
    Thanks,
    Al

    Al:
Does she see the horizontal lines on the pictures also? If not then it's being introduced by the emailing. If that's the case have her try to zip the file before emailing - Control-click on the file and select "Create Archive of xxxxx" from the Contextual menu. Then email that archive file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Firewire gone bad

    firewire gone bad.
Ireciently have hd issues with my g4 power mac in regards to its firewire connection. I reciently purchased an adio interface, a m-audio firewire 410 which runs via firewire. I was warned that this device could potentially harm my fire wire port. Reciently my computer will shut down when I plug the cable in. My computer also will nit recognize my m-audio interface which makes it usless to me at this point. My question is...
Does this seem like an issue with my firewire port or the device I'm using or both. Also I would love to know what need to do to resolve this issue.
    Ryan

Try a Firewire PCI card..... it's a cheap experiment to do
But are you sure that is the Mac and not the FW410?
Maybe are just the M-Audio drivers....
    cheers

  • New G580 laptop gone bad

I bought a lenovo G580 a few months back and it has already gone bad. I am not able to switch on the system without the chargers plugged in.
I have called up the customer service but they dont seem to be of any help either. They just lack the communication skills and fail to give any solution.
If my problem isn't sorted out. i will have to post my pathetic experience with Lenovo on all the social networking websites. If the company can't assist us during the warranty period, I wonder what will happen if the warranty period expires.

    Hi Azam,
As I can understand that the battery is not charging so I’d like to advise you to uninstall Lenovo Energy management from your application list and then reinstall it back from the below link we just need to make sure that the problem isn’t with the software issue:
    For Windows 7(32bit-64bit):
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_EG/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS030145
    For Windows 8(32bit-64bit):
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_EG/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031269
And after that check the battery icon if it changed to be charging.
Hope the information helps. Let us know.
    Regards
    Soha

  • RAM has gone bad 4 times now, anyone else have bad RAM?

I purchased a 17" MBP (Early 2010) the week they were released. In the first 2 months, one stick of RAM would go bad at a time. This happened 3 times. The Apple Store replaced them the first 2 times, but on the third failure (after doing a diagnostic that found nothing) they decided to replace the unit with a new MBP.
It has been just over a month and one stick of RAM has gone bad on my new MBP. This is the 4th RAM failure.
I keep my MBP on my desk 99% of the time. I'm not doing anything crazy with it. It's almost always plugged in to a power source. I've owned many Macs and PCs over the years and never had RAM problems like this.
I got the feeling the genius employee who helped me this time was getting suspicious of the frequent RAM failures on two separate macs. If I were him, I would be too. But I know I'm not doing anything that would cause this (and I'm not opening up the insides of the MBP for fear of voiding warranty).
Has anyone else had an issue like this? Can anyone think of something that could bring about RAM failures this frequent? Was the 1st computer defective and the 2nd one just bad luck with a bad stick of RAM?
If if makes a difference. On the 1st MBP, when booting up I'd get a blank screen, no beeps. With the 2nd MBP, I'm getting a blank screen but 3 beeps/blinking lights that repeat.

    Hi
likely to be coincidence, unless you've a very very spiky power supply there, and/or a power adapter that wasn't renewed at the same time as the mbp.

  • Battery died, wont hold a charge, just died.  Fully charged battery dies in approx 2 hours.  Is it battery gone bad. Or something causing battery to use excessive amount of energy.  Do you lose data if battery goes out?

Battery died, wont hold a charge.  After fully charging battery, battery loses all power in 2 hours. Is this indicative of a battery gone bad or something else?  Will I lose data if battery completely dies?

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
Yes I have done the reset-didn't work.
Yeh, the calibration was done so the phone turned off, then plugged back in to charge back to 100%!
The iphone4s was connected to the charger outlet, the second I unplugged the phone the battery percentage went from 100% to 98%.
AS we speak my phone is now on 100%, after 10 mins usage and 33 minutes standby. This just doesn't correlate with the decrease in battery life associated with every other number (e.g 99,98,97%) apart from when it is on 100%.

  • Mac Mini Ethernet port gone bad, doesn't show in network preferance pane?

My friend 's Mac Mini was doing fine then he shutdown disconnected everything and brought it over to my house for LAN games. He then couldn't get online through my router. I told him go to his network pane to see what kind of error it was giving, cable errors IP but no internet...etc, and only internal modem was displayed in the list. So I immediately went to his port setting and ethernet was checkmarked. So then I thought well maybe some PMU reset problem so I tried the resets and still not present from the network pane. So then I hooked my external hd to his firewire as a startup drive to eliminate that it just wasn't a software problem and it is still not showing up on network pane. I then skimmed through some online articles and things but to no avail. I just was thinking it was a 5 minute drive from his house to here and he said didn't do anything different from the other times he was here but something must have jarred it or perhaps just a coinseidense that the ethernet port went out when he was coming over. And to top it off he had made arrange for next weekend to sell it to a friend and get a new Intel iMac, which right now has to be put on the backburner until he has a working unit again. Applecare is up so that is out of the question. Any suggestion out there would be appreciated. Or is it just beyond easy fixes and has to either be repaired or keep and save from scratch for a new one?

OMG, guys I feel so dumb the new update to Tiger changed the way network pane worked so that was the whole problem its normal under 10.4.5 so plugged in a good cable and it came up fine go figure right. For being Apple certified for repair I sure looked past such an easy solution.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2012 15" - one RAM slot gone bad

    Hi,
Has anyone ever had the issue with not working RAM slot? My MacBook Pro mid 2012 (non-retina) suddenly froze and after restart was beeping three times every few seconds. I found out that the beeping signals bad RAM. Bought new chips, and the problem still exists. My mac can now run on one slot with 4GB RAM.
I did check the placement of the chips in the slots, i also checked one slot at a time, and one of them has gone broken.
Any ideas on how to make it run again? or if it is possible to replace the slots?
    Brgds

    MacBook Pro 2,7GHz Intel Core i7 / OSX 10.9.4

The Apple-accepted cure for a dead RAM slot is a new logic board. Unless you ahve AppleCare, that will be an expensive fix.
An Apple service option is the "depot repair." Instead of working on your computer in the Apple Store, they send it to a centralized refurbishment facility where they fix anything they find wrong (except for cosmetic damage and damage from abuse like dropping) for a flat fee of a little over US$300. That is between 30 and 40 percent of the parts and labor charges if Apple installs a new board in an Apple Store. Sometimes they will install an new battery at the depot without increasing the flat fee.
The downside is that it takes about a week; for that level of cost savings, I could do without my computer for a week.
So take it to Apple and ask about a depot repair.
A low-tech and low-cost option is to expand on what you are doing now--using one slot. Although the official RAM limit on your model is 8GB RAM (two 4GB models), your model can actually handle a total of 16GB (two 8GB modules. You can ignore the dead slot and put an 8GB module in the good slot. My 2012 MBP has 8GB RAM and is completely happy running Mavericks.
Be sure to ONLY get the RAM from an Mac-savvy vendor. For over a decade I've bought all our Mac RAM from one supplier. This is their page for an 8GB module for your MBP model:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/1600DDR3S8GB/
I would also trust Crucial on this one. For a change they recognize that your model can use more RAM than stated in Apple's outdated specs:
