Ethernet hard drive w/ iPhoto & iTunes??

I run a G5 and my wife will run a new iMac, and we would like to share/use the same iPhoto library and iTunes library via our ethernet connection and ethernet switch. Currently we are doing this by placing these libraries/files in a shared folder on my G5, and sharing them from our two accounts on the G5 only. The way we would like to use the two computers (with the new iMac) would include the capability of NOT having both of them powered on all the time. So, could I place my iPhoto libray and my ITunes library on a ethernet hard drive connected to my ethernet switch, and then be able to access/use the programs from both computers? (I know that we would not be able to use the same iPhoto library from both computers simultaneously. Has anyone tried this? Thanks!

should work... i wouldnt however redirect ituens and iphoto the network directories... instead id replace the Music and Pictures directories in each users symlinks in each user home folder with symlinks to the mounted share.
Youll also want to make sure you get an ethernet disk that can be formated as HFS or NTFS (or maybe UFS, not sure on that though) and that supports AFP or NFS sharing in addition to or instead of SMB. IVe found SMB to be not so good for this kind of thing.

I have this same question. Has anyone ever responded to you, or have you figured this out?

  • Airport Express with LaCie Ethernet Hard Drive

I have an existing airport express that currently is serving me just fine for wireless internet access (for mac mini, two pc laptops), print sharing and itunes.
I recently purchased LaCie's Ethernet hard drive. I am not able to use the usb port for to set the drive up - but was told buying D-Link Wireless G Router would do the trick and work in "tandem" with the AE. Anyone know how to figure this out? No problem using the AE for just print sharing and itunes - but does anyone know if this can be done? I would like to hook up the ethernet drive and possibly a Tivo but am limited w/ the Airport Express. At the same time, I don't want to replace the benefits of having the AE and do not need it to necessarily extend my network either.....

Well...I did just that - bought a D-Link 4-port router and hooked everything up. I disabled the AE router and have not been able to find the drive at all on any of my wireless connections. However, when I hooked up an ethernet cable from my laptop (pc) directly to the new router - i was able to see drive and access the login dialog box.
After having to reset the AE - and reestablishing the wireless network and checking all connections - I still had no luck. My wireless internet connection was working just fine so it appears that this setup is close to working - but still no recognition of a ethernet drive. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi, did you try iTunes>File>Import?

  • Delete songs from iTunes Library/Hard Drive directly from iTunes

I have my library setup so that all the music is added to the music folder and then I add to the library manually in iTunes.  I would like to go through and delete some songs from my library but I would also like them to be deleted from hard drive.  Typically I will left click the song, click show in finder, cmd-delete in finder, and then cmd-delete in iTunes.  Since I need to do this for 100s of songs in my library, it would be nice if I could directly delete from the hard drive and library inside iTunes.  If anyone knows of any features, scripts, or what have you that I could do this, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your help!
    OS X 10.8.2 and iTunes 11

First you need to make sure that the music files you want to delete are in the itunes music folder (you can relocate this in the advanced section of iTunes preferences). If the files are in a different folder, deleting them will only remove them from the itunes library, but not delete the files from the hard drive.
Open itunes and select the songs you want to delete.
If you are looking at them in an iTunes playlist, then hold the option key and press the delete key.
If you are looking at them in the iTunes library, just press the delete key.
You should get a popup asking if you want to delete the song(s) from your iTunes library. If they are songs purchased from the iTunes Store, you might also get a question about deleting them from iCloud. Select delete song and you should then get another popup asking if you want to move the selected song(s) to the trash. Select delete song. Once you empty the trash they should no longer be in the finder or the iTunes library.
Hope this helps. I just tested it out with OS X 10.8.2 and iTunes 11.0

  • I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  need help

I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem.  What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ????????  Please help

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive.  If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down.  You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes.  Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked.  You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library.  iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
    Shouldn't have any more problems...

  • I have downloaded the tv shows Homeland and Dexter. They have ended up in different places. Dexter is where is "belongs" in my itunes library on my NAS drive. Homeland ended up on my hard drive in the itunes/music/tvshows directory. Anyone know why?

Several months ago I bought and downloaded Homeland. Earlier this month I bought
Dexter Season 7. They have ended up in different directories. My iTunes library is
on a NAS drive and Dexter was stored there (where it belongs). For some reason,
Homeland got saved to my Mac hard drive in the itunes/music/tvshows directory.
This seems odd everything else I have downloaded, music, other tv shows, movies
have been saved to the proper place. I haven't changed the path to my iTunes
    library in years.
Now, iTunes has kept track of these two tv shows and I synced them both
to my iPad. The only reason I know they are in different places
is because my wife couldn't find them on the NAS drive.
Mostly out of curiosity, I'd like to know why this happened and how to keep it from
    happening again.
Oh, it's iTunes 11.0.3 running on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8.
    Thanks
    Bob

I don't think it is easy to move part of a collection unless you don't care about the metadata such as date added, etc.  You can copy the files to the other drive, delete in iTunes the references to the copies still on your computer, then hold down the option key while dragging the files on the external to iTunes so it doesn't copy them back to your internal but just references them where they are.  You have to remember to do this each time.  Either that, or set preferences so iTunes does not automatically copy any file to your media folder when added but leaves them all where they land on your computer.  You can move them by hand around the computer, but not between drives.
You could try Dougscript "Move Files To Folder" but I don't know if this enables iTunes to track items moved to a different drive.  iTunes doesn't really like using multiple drives.
As for using Time Capsule, I have seen various takes on this.  I recall reading somebody saying it isn't a good idea to have a backup drive competing for dual purposes.  My take on it is, TC is a backup, period.  If you keep your movies on it and the TC drive dies, you lose your only copy of the movies.
How often do you really watch these movies?  Yes, it is nice having them appear in iTunes, but unless you are watching them every day then it isn't a huge burden to have them on another drive.  Frankly, if I had iTunes movies I would probably make a whole different library for them and start from it with the external drive turned on when I was in a movie mood.

  • I have an old iPod Classic with 80 GB (I think) of space. I saved all my songs in an external hard drive, but the iTunes library resided in an old computer (no longer working). Can I get the libray from my iPod and use it in my new computer (Windows)?

You might want to check your process for moving your iTunes music against this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527.

  • I lost my hard drive contents and itunes wasn't backed up. Can I recover the library from my iPad?

I lost my hard drive contents and itunes wasn't backed up. Can I recover the library from my iPad?

You won't be able to recover you entire library from your iPad but you can recover some of its contents by transferring the purchases back to iTunes. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 This will not transfer anything you did not purchase from iTunes, for example music or video files you had stored on the HD and you put into iTunes. Without a backup that information is gone. One very important thing to keep in mind. Once you sync the iPad to the new iTunes it will remove all the afore mentioned music or video files from the iPad. Do not sync with iTunes if you want to keep those files. Hope that helps.

  • How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

  • Can I move my itunes media folder to an external hard drive without having Itunes managing the media folder

Hi all....I have spent weeks tidying up my music collection. I moved it all to Itunes media folder. Since I don't like how Itunes manages this folder I manually organised it myself so that albums where together etc. I am wondering if there is a fool proof way to move my media folder to an external hard drive without letting itunes manage and consolidate files as this will reverse all the work I did in organising. Im not sure if Im posting to the right place but fingers crossed:)
    Thanks in advance

Just one more thing puhlease:) This is the list of things that are in my iTunes folder. Album artwork, Automatically add to iTunes, iTunes media, Mobile apllications, podcasts, previous itunes libraries, voice memos. Then it has files itunes preferences, itunes libary extras, itunes libarry genius, itunes libraary, itunes music library......Is there stuff in there that doesnt need to be there as some are repeated in itunes media folder which contains....automatically add to itunes, books, downloads, home videos, mobile applications, music, podcasts, tones, voice memos and itunes preferences. Any thoughts on deleting some folders??? Thankyou so much for your time on this
