  • Home Sharing - works in WiFi, not Ethernet: Help!

    Hi all -
I've had an Apple TV happily working with Home Sharing from a Mac Mini when both were on the WiFi network from my Time Capsule router.
However, I've just installed Ethernet cabling at home so all three are now connected on a wired network, and Home Sharing is no longer working on the Apple TV.
The Apple TV simply says that it can't find the Mac, and to check that it is on the same network. However, there's only one wired network / LAN in the building - just two CAT5 cables running to the Time Capsule, which is then getting the Internet from a cable modem.
Any idea how I can resolve this?

This is a user forum. Lotsa folks asking questions, few sticking around to give any answers. Just depends who is around to see a message and whether they have any ideas to help. Could take days, not minutes or hours.
+I have created and tried this with three different accounts, but they all fail to enable Home Sharing.+
I'm confused why you're trying 3 different accounts. Try it using the same single account and two different PCs. Does that work? Can you download and play a free song of the week using one of those itunes store accounts?
Going forward, I hope you decide to only use one account. They can never be combined later. You'll have to forever remember the login credentials of each itunes store account if you move stuff to a new PC.
I tried 3 accounts, because none of them work for Apple TV. Yet, all three of them DO access the Apple store and forums and music and everything on this website.
Did I say anything about combining these accounts? Not even remotely helpful.
It's the same for me, as it is for rlongfield22(above).
I am absolutely serious: Apple is the most difficult, ridiculous, illogical interface I have EVER seen in 18 years of computing and using the internet. I use both MACs and PCs daily, so I can easily compare the experiences on many levels.
I know what I am doing on a PC and I rarely make common errors. I know my Apple ID and pass by heart(all three of them). I know my PC and network name by heart. My network and PC have the passwords blank.
So,...I should be able to have my Apple TV work, by simply activating Home Sharing on this network(done that successfully) and then activating it on my Apple TV(doesn't work).
I have tried activating Apple TV network first and tried activating Home Sharing first, but neither one works. When I plug in the Apple TV, the blue light flashes and then stays on.

  • Time Capsule Ethernet Help

    Hi
I'm trying to set up a Time Capsule to connect to the router via Ethernet and let me do my initial backup through Ethernet to my computer and then be able to do wireless backups after that. And I will be able to connect to the internet wirelessly.
Now my problem is Everybody tells me that if I plug my router(NETGEAR) into my Time Capsules WAN port via Ethernet and set it up to extend the network that It would work. But When I plug it into the WAN port and choose that option it gives me a list of available devices(routers) that are connected via ethernet. My router is not there. All I see is "Previous Time Capsule Config".
Now what? No matter what I do I can get it to pick up my router via ethernet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to bridge the Time Capsule.
Go to the top menu Internet and select connect using ethernet and then below that, connection sharing.. choose bridge mode.
Now it doesn't matter what port the TC is plugged into the main router. And wireless can be setup as you like.. but you are not extending the wireless. You are using it as a simple AP.
Does the Netgear have wireless? If so you can use manual channel setup in the TC .. just use a different channel to the Netgear.

  • Extending wireless network via ethernet help

Hello, I'm helping my sister & brother in law get a wireless network running and was wondering if anyone can share some advice about extending the wireless from an Airport Extreme with an Airport Express. They have no networking experience at all and I have a little so got roped into this.
The house they live in is an unsual design (husband an architect) with a feature mid way through the house which kills the wireless signal stone dead so only one half of the house gets wireless.
    * The Cisco cable modem is a 4 port router with wireless (disabled) and an active DHCP server.
    * The cable modem is plugged into the WAN port on the Airport Extreme.
    * The Airport Extreme is set to Off (bridged mode), obtain IP via DHCP so it acts as a wireless access point.
The above setup works great for any wireless devices, although I am a little unsure if that is the proper way to go about it, I'm not used to Apple gear but bought it for the purpose of extending the network and keeping things simple.
The house was wired for ethernet but things didn't work out so well as the cable modem is a temperamental beast and the one place it would give a reliable link was a place with no ethernet ports nearby.
Anyway the plan is to get some homeplugs (ethernet over powerlines) and link the Airport Extreme and Airport Express that way giving a roaming network but can anyone suggest what settings I use on the Airport Express. Apple's own roaming tutorial seems to contradict the settings I'm already using by turning on connecting sharing for the Airport Extreme which last time I tired I think the cable modem did not like.
    Thanks.

My advice would be to only use the Cisco device as a cable modem and disable all of it's router features. You can then configure the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network. The built in Wizard will guide you thru this easily.
So you should take it (AirPort Extreme) out of Bridge mode, And use it to set up and administer your network.
After you've done this, check that both the wired and wireless connections are working properly before trying to extend the network.
Once you're able to connect successfully to the AirPort-created network, then you can extend it (if it's still necessary) using the AirPort Express.
This is very easy to do.
In the Airport Extreme be sure to check the box "Allow this network to be extended" in the Wireless tab.
then you'll need to configure the AirPort Express by connecting to it. (This is most easily done by temporarily connecting to it's ethernet jack with an ethernet cable and running the AirPort utility.
Once it finds the Express, Go to the Wireless tab and select  "Extend a wireless network" as the Wireless Mode.
You'll then be presented with a list of Wireless network names. select the name for the network you created with the AirPort Extreme, including any security mode and password you set up.
Click on update to send the configuration to the airport express.
The LED will blink yellow a few times, and if it then turns solid GREEN you're all set.
You can disconnect it from the computer and un plug it.
Then select a location for the Express about half-way between the furthest spot you need wireless access and the Airport Extreme . Plug it into the nearest outlet and the LED should flash yellow and then turn solid green.
When it does, you're all set and should see better wireless access through the rest of the house.
Let me know how you make out.

  • Poor Connection, would an ethernet help alot?

Hi, I have recently done a few speed tests and my connection is very poor (0.61 download, 0.35 upload, according to Xbox One)
When I try and play online I experience lag, and sometimes I disconnect, I sometimes can't watch streams on Twitch.tv, or stream on it using the Xbox.
If I get an ethernet cable, do you think I could get better speeds?

  • Can't Use Built-in Ethernet-HELP!!!

I am trying to connect a slot loading 350 mhz imac to the internet through the built-in ethernet for a friend that needs it, but the network status pane (OSX.3 Panther) keeps saying the ethernet cable is not plugged in. I've tried several different Cat 5 ethernet cables and it still says this, so we can't connect to the isp (with cable modem). It also says the internal modem is not working, I get the red light next to it and the built-in ethernet buttons in Network status. I've tried direct connections to two different external cable modems, and three different ethernet cables, I think the problem is a software issue that needs correcting. I just got through with a clean install of OS 9.1 and OSX.3, but the network still does not recognize the ethernet cable as being plugged in.
Other things I've tried: zapping the PRAM, and resetting the nv-ram, but to no avail (as suggested by other posts I've come across). I ran Tech Tool 4 on it however, and the Network test PASSED.
Isn't there something I can do in Preferences or terminal so the network can see the built-in ethernet? I'd really appreciate any ideas or suggestions!
    Thanks, Chuck

You can easily restore without updating to the latest OS - simply don't purchase it. You can restore from iTunes - on the Summary page, just click on Restore.
As to your WiFi problem (and that is what you most likely experiencing) tell us more about the network you are using, the hardware, who the heck your ISP is and so on. It may be as simple as whoever owns the network is blocking access to Apple sites.
I am assuming by built in sites, you are referring to the App Store, iTunes, etc. correct?
If your network indicates that you are logged in, tap Settings > WiFi. Does your network have a check mark next to it? If it does, tap the blue arrow (>) next to the name. Does your IP address start with 169.x or 192.x?

  • PLA's to Ethernet.

I'm not on infinity therefore, i can only watch ESPN on the lappy and there are is a bit of buffering. Not too bad but annoying enough.
If there is something i really want to watch on ESPN on the tv i can connect up. What i'm not sure about is as i currently use PLA's to view Sport 1 & 2 (no problems at all with that) if i connect the hub to the box with the ethernet cable, do i have to completely disconnect the PLA's or will the cable automatically override them?
    Telboy.
    Solved!

I didn't explain that well at all did I? What i was getting at is will connecting the laptop to the hub with cable rather than wirelessly and connecting the hub to BTV box with ethernet, help with the buffering problem i have with ESPN
Also should i disconnect the PLA's before doing so?
Sport 1 & 2 is great via wireless ESPN is not so good.

Suggest you use SpeedFan for fan & temp monitoring. It takes some configuring but works great! And it's FREEWARE
There's a new release 4.09 here with the ff. relevant features:
     - added full support for ICH5
     - reduced the amount of data output in the SEND REPORT for PCI devices
     - recognized more CPUs (mostly P3, Athlon and P4)
     - values for some ITxxxx sensors are no longer restored when exiting (this should solve the "fans set to 100% upon program termination" issue on some MBs)
     - properly read large HDD size
     - added automatic clock speed setting based on CPU usage
     - tray icon shows last value and no longer the average
     - added preliminary support for ISC952607 (ASUS P4P800 DeLuxe)
     - added history charting

  • Need help connecting 5th gen Time capsule via wifi to existing wifi network(non-apple) and use ethernet out to AV receiver?

Could anyone help advise me how to use my 5th gen time capsule airport to connect to my existing wireless modem(non-apple) over the wireless network (NOT using the WAN port with a cable) and then connect with an ethernet cable to give internet connectivity to my AV Receiver?  I would also like to be able to back up my macbook pro with the time machine/time capsule benefit.  I know that many AV setups have recommended using airport express to receive wireless connectivity to pass on internet through the ethernet port to AV setups, but I thought I would try to add the extra functionality of the over-the-air backups with the time capsule at the same time.  Is this possible without connecting with a wire to the modem which has no ability for a wired connection where the TV and AV setup is?   Any help would be much appreciated:)

It doesn't work except to another apple router. Sorry.
The express does work.. that is a difference between Express and Extreme/TC.

  • Hi, I have a MacBook Pro and a PC both connected to a TC who in turn is connected to a cable modem. I have no wifi accessfrom my MacBook pro (self assigned IP - no internet connection msg) while I do on PC through ethernet? can anyone help?

I was working yesterday afternoon when the wifi suddenly went cold. Initially on the MacBookPro and on the ethernet connected PC. I reinitialized modem and TC  through the mac and then the ethernet on the PC worked again and has since.
I've reinitialized both the modem and TC many times, as well as checked the cables. Moreover, I've tried to renew the DHCP lease, provide the DNS servers manually, erased all networks in Network preferences and in KeyChain etc. but nothing seems to work.
One strange thing also happened. I had two networks created, one for me and one I created for guests. The latter one just vanished, dissapeared without a trace.
I've tried from the café down the street and the Wifi worked perfectly well though a little slow, but that could be their connection not the Airport. Therefore, my  I deduct that there is either something wrong in the TC or something went wrong in the network settings in the Mac. But that doesn't help to move forward and fix the darn thing.
The only thing I haven't done is completely reset the TC, but after reading a couple of help threads on different forums I'm confused as to how to proceed to get it back to worrk? Has anyone had the same or similar issue and found a solution?
    Thanks

Eh la Pastenague! Je savais que tu était léthale pour l'homme mais ce sont pluôt les machines à pommes qui devraient te craindre. Merci! Solved.
    For future reference.
My TC is a 3rd gen.
I actually had to reset to standard defaults not only once but twice. The first time I simply returned to my old profile but that only led to the same message error on the network settings (i.e. IP by default, cannot connect to the internet). Therefore the second time around I kept my profile as backup and re-created a new one plus a guest one.
The airport utility then signaled to issues remaining:
    1) Internet access was cut - this I solved by simply reseting the cable modem
    2) There were no DNS Servers - I simply copied the ones I had from the previous setup and it worked
    I did have AppleCare....
I'm online again and I hope for good.
    Thanks a lot
PS. a small tip - I made captures of all my settings in Network settings, Airport Utility and Network utility using Grab in case of ... if anything it is just handy to get back settings that your are missing when setting up a new configuration

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • I'm hooked up to the ethernet using DHCP with manual address. It's running (green) but my internet (Safari, messenger, email) doesn't work! Help!

I'm running an iMac with Mountain Lion. Not only do we do accounting work on this computer with AccountEdge, but the computer functions as a server to another computer in a different state.
Anyway, I set a static IP address (Using DHCP with manual address) on it (to allow for a VPN to the computer in the different state) and it is connected (green dot) - meaning that the other computer in the different state can connect to us via that ethernet line - but for some reason Safari, Messanger, and Apple Email won't work.
But if I switch a dynamic IP (DHCP auto), I can use the internet (Safari, messanger, email), but the computer in the different state can't connect to this computer.
How can I fix this so that the computer in the different state can connect to this computer and that the internet (Safari, messanger, and email) can work at the same time?
    Much thanks!

No but if they are using a VPN Tunnel for the connection that restricts all internet traffic over the tunnel. Which means you can't use that same computer to broswe the internet or connect to other computers or devices on your LAN.
I'd need to see the actual setup, router and the IP addresses you are using.
Networking and remote networking is fairly easy when you are in front of the systems you are working on. Doing it over the internet on a forum is almost impossible. Tha is why I suggested you get local help, like the person that originally set it up.

  • Macbook Pro 10.7.5 internet will not work. HELP!!! Ethernet and WIFI both say connected but still no internet.

I have a macbok pro running 10.7.5. My internet has always worked on it but I decided to try changing my router set up - the set up didn't work so I reverted back to the original setup that had previously worked.
Now, I have an Imac running tiger - I can connect to the internet via WIFI or Built In Ethernet with no problem.
When I try to connect to the internet on the Macbook Pro running osx 10.7.5 my internet will not work
Safari Says (You are not connected to the internet) and Google Chrome says (Page is Unavailbe) and lists some trouble shooting options that I tried.
When I go to System prefrences > Network my WIFI and Ethernet both say "Connected" and have a green light next to them.
I have tryed deleting the connections and starting new ones and I have even tried deleting the Location and starting a new one.
Nothing works - no matter what I do, even know the WIFI or ETHERNET says Connected, the internet will not work on the Macbook Pro.
The Internet works fine on my Imac and I have tried everything such as swaping cables but there doesn't seem to be a problem with my internet
or with my router - it all works fine with my Imac running Tiger.
Can anyone help me get my internet working on my Macbook Pro again? Any ideas?

    Hello ASGR.SYS amd WahWar,
I tried both of your suggestions and neither of them worked.
ASGR SYS - When I tried it your way i got a message saying that the that the diagnostic couldn't repair the problem. It shows the thw WIFI, WIFI SETTINGS, NETWORK SETTINGS, ISP, all turn green. But the Internet and Sever stay red. The thing is, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection as I can connect to the internet on my Imac running tiger, both through ethernet and wireless. When I go to System Prefrences and Ntwork the WIFI and ETHERNET both say "Connected" even know I can't veiw any websites.suggestion
When I tried WAHWAR's suggestion I get a message that says cannot connect to the WIFI network and then it lists your typical trouble shooting tips. Like Make sure you entered the right password and make sure you are in range of the wireless network
Again, just to confoirm - My internet connection is working fne both the WIFI and the Ethernet. When I use it on my IMAC running tiger, everything connects as it should and it works perfectly. But when I try to connect with the MacBook Pro, Even know the connections in the Network settings window show up as "connected" the MacBook still seems to think that my internet connection isn't working at all.
I have tried creating new connections, creating new locations, and I have even gone as far to reset my router and start completely from scratch. The result so far has been the same - the IMAC running tiger will connect - my blackberry and iphone will connect - but the macbook pro running lion will not connect..
    I'd apprechiate any other suggestions
