Ethernet/Internet Issues

Here's the deal. Did an OS update on a Power PC G5 to Leopard and now I have no internet connection. It was fine before the upgrade. I have checked and triple checked the Network settings and everything looks fine. I have the green light saying my network connection is good, I also did a network diagnostic and it came back all clear. I can get this computer to talk back and forth to the other Mac on the network but I can't get an internet connection for some reason.
Also I went into the network utility and pinged google.com and this is what I got.
Ping has started ...
PING www.l.google.com (74.125.19.99): 56 data bytes
--- www.l.google.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
I am thinking it might be something completely obvious but I can't figure it out and my IT guy has no idea (not fluent in Mac operations) I need some help please. This issue has boggled me and it's slowing me down. Thanks.

  • 10.3.9 Internet issues

    Hi All
i have been trawling through the fourms and still cannot find a solution to my iMac internet issues. I have done a complete format and reinstall of Mac OS X 10.3.9 (to be fair i downloaded update on another computer and instelled via USB stick) everything works great can import into firewire from camcorder etc. Airport card can see the wireless connection but when i enter the password it states there is a problem and connot connect. I have tried everying (to what i can understand anyway) and teh main reason for a clean install was to get rid of any possible conflicts that may have been there.
everything else can use the internet including my MacBook (intel) fine. Some one did suggest once that DNS settings were not correct which to be honest i did not userstand how to alter them, plus if eberying else was ok why just this iMac playing up.
Please can you assist just want to this to connect so my son can upload his filming to pleople for his re school assignments.
    thank you in advance
    Peter

    Oops!
Could you specify what iMac you have, the specs of the system & computer,
as that may help research or find workable ideas for you to try. This would
help in troubleshooting, or in discovering Support articles to link you to in
    the course of a discussion.
I just re-read your post and had thought it was for a later
mac + OS X that would not run in PowerPC vintage!
(The mention of MacBook threw me off, as did a recent newer
OS X upgrade that may run -- in that newer hardware 10.9.3)
    So you've upgraded a PowerPC iMacG4 to Leopard 10.3.9
and the internet doesn't work? The wireless router may be
using a different security protcol than the old Airport Card
can support; you may have to test the unit via Ethernet to
be sure the computer itself is fully updated. It may go to
Apple servers to look for Software Updates.
The settings for the wireless security may be incorrect,
since later WPA2, won't apply to vintage AirPort card.
With a later OS X such as Tiger 10.4(.11) the odds do
improve for connectivity to the internet.
The DNS settings should not be an issue if you can use the
internet with a recent version computer and later OS X.
Not sure how to help, except to try as a test, to run without
the security you'd really want with the wi-fi (WPA2, etc)
turned on, to see if the old iMac can then use it.
Another issue would be the lack of correct frequency; a
newer Wi-Fi system may not be set to be backward
compatible to 802.11a/b, newer ones use 802.11/b/g/n/+
You may check to see if the router has a setting to allow
use of lower or older spec connection.

  • Problems sharing MacbookAir ethernet internet to Ipad

The overall process for sharing my MacbookAir ethernet internet to my IPad and my mobile phone is troublesome.Basically I have to literally activate/deactivate the "Internet sharing" box under System Preferences/Sharing several times before I can get an actual internet. Have to mention that my devices can connect to the network but there is no actual internet and the pages cannot load. After I repeat the process several times then i am able to get internet.
    Any help would be welcom

    I am still not succeeding.
I just upgraded to a new Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. Testing at home, where there are no issues around hotel ISP limitations and I feel pretty safe originating an open wifi network for a few minutes.
Set up Internet Sharing from Ethernet to Wifi. Used the Create Network option for wifi in the menu bar to set up an open unprotected wifi network whose name is the name of my Mac. I can choose any wifi channel from 1 to 11; it makes no difference.
I can see that network from my wife's iPad, and can connect to it no problem. But as in all similar tests since Snow Leopard came out, Safari in the iPad can't open any web sites; it says it is not connected to the internet. I can also connect to the MBP wifi from my iPhone, but if I select it, the 3G symbol still shows at the top of the screen because the phone cannot find an internet connection over that wifi.
Clearly some other people are managing to do what I cannot. Quite possibly some piece of third party software on my Mac is interfering. Little Snitch, for example, though it is currently turned off.

  • No Ethernet/Internet Connection on Parallels 7 Running Snow Leopard Server - Fix?

I have recently installed Parallels 7 on my 2013 iMac, and have both Snow Leopard Server and Windows 7 running great on the Parallels platform.
However, after installing some anti-virus software, "ClamXav" and "MacScan", I need to have the internet connected to my Paralells 7 so I can receive viral updates to both these programs. I am unable to get any ethernet/internet connection on my Paralells 7 running Snow Leopard Server.
I have tried to update the Paralells 7 Snow Leopard Server "network Info" (in SL systems preferences" ... as the same ethernet connection info that I have running my "network connection" on my main OS Mountain Lion, but still no ethernet connection in Paralells 7.
This is a screen grab of the locations where I believe I am able to update my "ethernet" info for Paralells 7 Snow Leopard:
Obviously, I've blurred out the current info in these two windows, for security purposes, but exactly what should be applied to these windows to get my "ethernet" connection in Paralells 7 up and running?
I would think entering the exact same "network info" as appears in my Mountain Lion "Systems Preferences - Network" window, would get me internet connected on Paralells 7 Snow Leopard? Evidently not ... what is needed for me to get this right?
Anyone have experience getting "ethernet/internet" connected on Snow Leopard Server, using Paralells 7?

Also, I was asking about the internet connection issue with the new 2013 iMac (running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 runiing Parallels 7), not a 2011 Mini Mac running Lion with Parallels 8.

  • Itunes 8.2 disables Ethernet/Internet connection

In an effort to upgrade to iTunes 8.2 this morning, I d/l and installed without difficulty. However, afterward, my computer did not recognize my Ethernet and I could not connect to the internet. I restored my computer to an earlier restore point, which restored my Ethernet/internet connection and deleted iTunes 8.2. After some manipulation of files, I now have a working version of iTunes 8.0.2. This is so frustrating, b/c it has taken me several hours of research to get everything functioning as it was before installing the iTunes upgrade.
What do I have to do to get Itunes 8.2 to function on my computer without it disabling my internet access? Apparently without the upgrade to 8.2, I cannot download the software upgrade for my iPhone 3g.
    Thanks for your help.

Its amazing, my previous post which was deleted by the powers that be, was solely related to the problem that alot of people are having. Namly Itunes disabling internet connection, because I was extreamly irrate about the whole this I accidentally put a swear word in the post.
How is it that the posts can be read to police against that but not to check on peoples problems and get them sorted.
Seriously apple get this problem sorted, I object to having to join this forum giving away my details so you can now email me, with alot of stuff that I don't even want. One thing I would like is for you to sort this problem out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope that isn't too many exclamation marks, hope it doesn't offend anyone.
I am running XP, when I download Itunes it gets rid of my internet connection, thus making Itunes more useless than it already is.
We are waiting for an answer. As I said in the previous post, DO YOUR JOBS AND GIVE US AN ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And for the Apple discussions staff, if you are reading this, how about a bit of customer service, stop hiding behind your standard signature block and sign your emails with a name. The personal touch would make people less inclined to lose their tempers.

No you can't. You can use Internet sharing with your computer making the computer the WiFi hotspot for the iPad, but you cannot connect the iPad to an Ethernet cable.

  • Ethernet Internet & Airport Express Printing at the same time

    Ok Guys:
My 18 year old cousin is going off to University this fall, and she will be taking her iMac G5 and a new Macbook with her. She wants to set up her canon printer wirelessly by using an Airport Express. Assuming her Internet access is by ethernet, provided in each residence room by the university, can she also setup an Airport Express to use for wireless printing at the same time? In other words will the following scenario work?
Network 1: Ethernet Internet (provided by the University)
    AND (at the same time)
Network 2 : Wireless printing network by Airport Export Express.
    Thanks.

I have rest my safari several times, all the internal parts have been checked and are said to be in perfect working order, and i have had the entire profile of my computer wiped clean, having to reinstall everything. now it is doing this and will stay on this gray screen for up to a half hour, until the box that says safari has quit working, or the flash player plug in has quit working. Has anyone else had this problem, if so any help would be great, casue I really do not want to take the computer in again only for them to tell me its fine.

  • Incessant Internet Issues

    Hi there
It's been a while since I last posted on these forums with an internet issue, but my connection is really messed up. I'll see if I can do the speedtester stuff in between the constant disconnections that I am getting.
My router stats are at the end of this message. Despite the fact my Downstream speed keeps switching between 6Mbps - 7.9Mbps, I am getting around 1.6Mbps, which I expect. The very high number of errors is telling me that my line is really noisy: my parents have told me that the line, when using the phone, was very noisy when calling other people, which would confirm that theory.
I do know that there are some works being done in a plot of land right next to the telephone exchange and I suspect it's BT adding the fibre broadband exchange in preparation of activating fibre in my area by the end of the year, is it possible this is causing line issues ? I know we've also had really bad weather and I'm suspecting this to be a factor in my connection issues.
Many thanks for any help I can get.

  • Is July 9 internet issue a problem for Mac Pro users?

Is the July 9 internet issue a problem for Mac Pro users or has Apple taken care of this issue in updates?

It is a only a problem for users affected by the malware that replaces their DNS IPs on their macs. They already have a serious problem which they should fix. Follow the url in sig's post to determine if you are infected and how to remove it.

  • Lots of crazy internet issues

I seem to be having a massive amount of random internet issues after upgrading to Leopard. The first and most apparent is that Mail and iChat both get randomly disconnected and Mail often insists that it cannot connect to the IMAP server one moment, only to work perfectly again within a minute while no other internet services (Safari, Transmission) are affected.
Safari has decided that http://news.bbc.co.uk is actually http://www.apple.com. I kid you not. I try and look at BBC news and I am consistently redirected to Apple's website. news.bbc.co.uk/iphone goes to apple.com/iphone. I've never seen anything like it before in my life.
Mail's RSS feeds seem to randomly disappear. No trace of their existence is left. After switching the 'default RSS reader' preference to Safari and then back to Mail, they re-appear - with all articles unread.
On the whole, quite a number of confusing bugs.

So, what happens if you go here: http://212.58.226.73/ ? That's the IP address that news.bbc.co.uk is supposed to point to. I found that by looking in Tiger's Network Utility as my Leo is still on it's way to me. If you want to know what that IP is before going there ( a good idea ), you can put that in the lookup tab on Net Util and see what comes back.
If the IP works, then DNS is hosed somewhere. See what Net Util says news.bbc.co.uk translates to. If it the number above, it's a Safari thing. If it's apple (starts with 17 IIRC) then it might be fixable by flushing the DNS cache though I don't know how to in Leo (shouldn't be hard).
If you did an upgrade install, you might want to reinstall using Archive and Install.

  • Ethernet Communications Issue

    Hello list,
I have an ethernet communications issue.
We can communicate with our products using two communications modes, ethernet, and a proprietary CAN. For the ethernet connection, I have a router that assigns a DHCP address to the product (169.254.130.005). For the CAN connection there is a hardware ethernet to CAN adapter that has an assigned address of 169.254.130.006.
Below is a simplified example of the code I use to talk to the product. (there is only one loop...two loops are shown. One showing the True Cases, one showing the False cases.
So I set the I.P. address, set "Connect?" to true, and run my code for a while. I then set "Connect?" to false, change the I.P. address, and then set "Connect?" to true.
What I have found is that the "TCP Close Connection" does not actually close the connection, and the "TCP Read" and "TCP Write" are reading and writing to BOTH I.P. addresses simultaneously! (confirmed by using Wireshark). I don't understand how this can be since I only have one TCP Write and one TCP Write, and see only one "Connection I.D." when I probe that wire.
Am I not closing the connection properly? Do I have to kill the connection ID in Windows somehow?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Nathand,
The code shown is a simple representation of what I'm doing.  I guess it wasn't clear.  The switch is connected to a shift register to compare the previous & current loops itterations and only opens one connection "on change" of the "Connected?" input.  (that is confirmed with Wireshark).  Also, the product tells me that I have made only one TCP/IP connection on each IP address.
I pass the Connecion ID that is created out the right side of the loop and into the left with a shift register when the connectionis made...so the same Connection ID is used for each read/write.  What I'm not understanding is how I can see only one Connection ID on the wire but a read/write to both I.P. addresses with only one one read and one write in my code.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Macbook Pro cannot connect to Internet via Ethernet / Cosmetic Issues

My Wireless Router died last night, so I connected my PC Desktop directly to the Modem. It worked like a charm.
I then decided to connect my MacBook Pro (2.4GHZ, OS X 10.5.3) to the Modem and...it didn't work. I tried going into the network settings (turning off the AirPort Card, moving the Ethernet to the top of the list, etc.) and I still could not get it to work.
Aside from taking it in, is there anything that I can do to try to remedy the situation, maybe a setting that I've missed? Also, there is a tiny ding on front of the bottom case. Can I get it fixed if I have the "Accidental Insurance?"

Was the MBP working when you had the router?
Also, did you power cycle the modem when you switched machines?  Most cable modems remember the ethernet MAC address of the computer that was last connected to it, and will not permit another machine to connect until the unit is fully power cycled (turned off and back on).  This is to enforce network provider policies of one computer at a time per account.  (Most ISPs want extra money for extra machines.)  The reason you can use multiple machines with a router is because the router performs some special functions to make multiple machines appear as a single machine to the outside world.

  • Ethernet card issue...can't get rid of self-assigned IP

    Hi folks,
I am using an circa 2005 iMac G5 PPC desktop with 10.5.8. I am trying to connect the iMac to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable, but seem to be having problems with my ethernet card. When I plug into the TC ethernet port, the TC drive, does not mount and I cannot access the worldwide web.
When I go to System Preferences --> Networking, the tab on the left for ethernet connection shows a green dot, says "self-assigned IP" and the status says "connected" PRIOR TO CONNECTING THE ETHERNET CABLE TO THE TIME CAPSULE. It shows a "self-assigned" IP (DHCP selected) of 169.254.69.249, even though I know my TC is 10.0.1.1.  Turning the ethernet off then back on, renewing the DHCP lease, nothing seems to be able to make this 169 IP address go away. The wireless connection to the TC is just fine... everything does what it should, I just can't get the ethernet cable connection to work.
Out of curriosity, I went to the System Profiler, and on the network tab it shows ethernet IPv4 169.254.69.249 (name en0).
I know it's not the Time Capsule, as I connected my laptop to it just fine via ethernet. The TC was IP 10.0.1.1 and it assigned 10.0.1.5 to my laptop (I have a variety of devices on my network), and I was able to transfer data and access the internet with no issues whatsoever.
I live in an 32 story apartment with a built-in ethernet network and ISP included in my rent. It's pretty nice, high speed. I connect from the wall to the Time Capsule via ethernet (circle dot connection port, so I know I have the right port), and then wirelessly out to a couple of laptops, a couple of Airport Express, and of course my desktop.
Bottom line, I think the ethernet card on iMac G5 desktop has gone bad: A few questions:
    (1) Any ideas what may be wrong? Has anyone seen this self-assigned IP thing that won't go away?
    (2) Any ideas how to fix it?
    (3) How much will it cost? It may be time to replace my 6-year old desk top computer.
    Thanks, Andy

I've swapped out several cables still with no luck, and the current cable definitely has 8 pins and worked with my laptop, so I'm confident it's not the cable. Also, the Time Capsule seems to be OK, because it too worked with my laptop using the same port. The only variable that doesn't seem to be cooperating is my desktop computer.
Also, I have tried to manually assign an IP consistent with the network & appropriate subnet mask. It seems to take the IP address manually, but still I can't get internet access, and can't ping the Time Capsule in network utility either.
Finally, when I connect the desktop directly to my wall outlet, taking the router out of the equation entirely, network diagnostics shows ethernet failure...
Does that sound like a bad ethernet card?
What does it take to replace an ethernet card in an iMac G5?
    Cheers, Thanks, Andy

  • Ethernet connectivity issue with Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS)

Just recently updated my OS to Yosemite, and am now having ongoing problems connecting to my company's Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS).
I'm having no other issues connecting to outside server's via wifi or ethernet, but once I connect to our local business server I lose internet connection and also my email account goes offline (Microsoft Outlook 2011). Sometimes the connection will intermittently return, but will be very slow and won't load images. I had no connection issue's before the update.
    Anyone experienced a similar problem?

"That depends on what what resources you use the server for."
    - I will be using the printer for print sharing and file sharing. There is an estimating application I will load on a Mac Mini and will want to share that to other desktops.
