Ethernet is slow, lots of packet collisions

this might be a more challenging question for most, but here it goes.
before i start eliminate the following possibilities: bad cable(s), bad router, bad modem, slow internet in general, and ISP.
my web browsing has been very slow the last few weeks. so after testing cables, modems, routers, and speed testing at a site like www.testmy.net. i used a packet analyzer like ethereal to see what exactly is going on. Now, no matter how i connect my ethernet i am getting mass amounts of packet collisions with wrong checksum's with tcp. Your probably thinking isp problem, but thats not the case. When i use my airport connection, web browsing is click-BOOM and it works like it should. Analyzing the packets with the airport connection show 0 checksum errors.
My question is... is this a problem with the hardware (ethernet port), or is this some software configuration that i am missing.

i'm having the same issue with my laptop when i take it to another network and plug it in through the network port. Everything works, it's just slower then normal. I'm guessing it's a problem with the sungem drivers in 10.4. I've never had this kind of problem with 10.3 on any of my machines.

    we have a 2nd gen. TC and it works fine when used in wireless mode.
    For the first time I wanted to hardwire from the TC to our two iMacs to take advantage of the speed of our internet bandwidth.
    But: The speed using Ethernet is slow and I can't figure out what's wrong.
    'Did a speedtest provided on the webpage of our internet provider and the speed is up to normal - when measured directly at the modem!
    Hook up the TC to the modem and the Mac to the TC via Ethernet, well, the speed drops to about one tenth !
    I tried different cables (various lengths and qualities), different Macs (iMacs, Powerbook, Macbook Pro), restarting the TC base, setting the TC up new from scratch, played with the manual network settings on the Macs - no change.
    It's like the TCs bandwidth at the Ethernet port resembles WLAN "n".
    I am at loss.
    Any ideas ?

    Solved.
    It was the modem that (apparently) can't properly communicate with the TC.
    'Went to our cellar, by pure coincidence found an old modem/router from another ISP from years ago.
    Et voilá. Full speed from the TC.
    Got a Double-NAT now, but apart from the flashing amber light everything seems to work just fine - and fast.

  • Database performing Very slow  - Lots of wait events

    My database is on Oracle10g on Sun 5.10
    The users are complaining about database is very slow.
    I analyzed the indexes & later on rebuild them, hardly it has only 5% performance improvement.

  • Ethernet speed slowed to 10T

    OS 9.2.2
    I recently rebuilt preferences due to some startup issues, got the system up and running again, but now the ethernet is slowed to a 10T speed.
    The card used to run at 100T. Tried plugging in a laptop to the same network cable, same ethernet jack and it runs at 100T. Booting off firewire w/ OS9 uses the 100T speed of the card. It's something in the OS, I'm assuming a preference since that's what I rebuilt, but I can't figure it out.
    I saw a post that was very similar to my issue but no answers posted. Anyone have ideas? Thanks!

    Cable swap doesn't speed it up, and same cable/jack with diff systems work fine.
    Also, same cable on this G4 is at full 100T speed if I boot off a fw drive and connect to the network/internet, so it doesn't appear to be the cable itself or the G4's port.
    Has to be OS related, I think.

  • Slow and lots of packet loss

    Hi Folks,
    I have a wireless network set up at home with 3 macs on it. I have a G3 iMac (ruby) with an airport card (original), a Dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD also with an original airport card in it and finally a new MacBook Pro with the standard Airport Extreme 802.11N card and firmware.
    Both the older machines connect and browse as one would expect them to and are lightning fast at browsing compared to the MBP. Is there some sort of mismatch with the cards?
    The router is not Apple. It is a Billion 7402VGP (wireless and VoIP) with the latest firmware. It is not capable of 802.11N but is capable of 802.11g. I have tried the MBP with traceroute with 50% packet loss on wireless but none on ethernet. The G4 on wireless has no packet loss and is further away.
    Any advice? What else could I tell you that would help you to help me?

    Hi Jane, Thanks for the reply. I have now purchased an AEBS(n) to try to overcome this problem. The Apple site says it is compatible with all versions of Airport card so I thought it would solve the problem.     However to answer your questions, The OS is 10.4.10 and I have run every updater I can find for all Macs concerned. hope this helps.

    I´ve had Verizon DSL in a Pittsburgh suburb for about 8 years without problems until a few days ago.
    My plan is 3 Mbps down/768Kbps up and my modem is a Westell 2200. I used to measure
    speed consistently at about 2.8 Mbps down and 700 Kbps up. Sites used to load within seconds.
    The first symptom of my current trouble is that I am unable to send email with a 300 KB attachment
    via Yahoo. Some sites take forever to load. Speed measurements on dslreports and speedtest.net now usually give the expected download speed but sometimes give extremely high ping times and upload speed measurements always HANG / never finish or get aborted. 
    I called Verizon support and they suggested connecting the computer directly to the modem
    with an Ethernet cable. I did that but it doesn´t help.
    Modem statistics show the expected speeds with SNR ratio 20 dB down and 12 dB up. Ethernet and WAN packet errors and discards are none EXCEPT the WAN interface has a very large number of OUT PACKET DISCARDS (more than half of out packets sent).
    High WAN out packet discards explain slow upload speeds, but what could be the cause? 
    It seems that the WAN line is OK given the SNR ratios, no errors or discards in and no errors out.
    The problems is specifically high WAN out discards.
    How can I get Verizon to verify the port and congestion on their side? That would seem a likely
    cause, right?

    Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
    Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
    Which means..
    Visit http://192.168.1.1/ for me and do the following:
    a) If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over [b]Troubleshooting[/b], go to [b]DSL[/b], and choose [b]Transceiver Statistics[/b]. Copy and paste the information on that page.
    b) If using the Red and Black Firmware: Go to [b]System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics[/b]. Copy and paste the information on that page.
    c) Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.
    d) If you need a Username and Password, try the following:
    admin/password

    The slow startup would not be a problem but netfs and mpd do not like it when the network is not up when they start (mpd music dir is on a network share), so I have to manually restart netfs every time I reboot.
    Other computers on the same network do not have the same problem, so I do not think it has anything to with the router.
    Is there anything I can do to make my ethernet card initialize faster?

    This did not change the time. The only change was that netcfg started dhclient instead of dhcpcd.

    Yes, it takes 40-60 seconds to get a connection after plugging the cable in again.

  • My airport doesn't manually shut down: airport icon is off, but activity monitor shows lots of packets still flowing. Its not my activity- all updates turned off. Virus?

    I'm running a Macbook Pro circa 2007 with OSX 10.6.8 and Firefox 27.0.1, and just had a circumstance that really puzzled me. I have a Hughesnet satellite modem with wireless router that I connect to via the airport, and I use Little Snitch software in the demo mode so I know and have to approve which software can send info through the internet connection., but the demo mode had just timed out and terminated and within a half hour of that the computer fans started speeding up to max and the CPU got blazing hot (+200 degF).
    Worried, I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing lots of internet activity even though I wasn't doing anything on the internet at the time, and I have all my software updates set to manual because otherwise they would use up my allotted daytime bandwidth and leave none for me. I'd already completed manual software updates during the nightly free time recently. Fearing my computer was hijacked & out of my control, I turned the airport off to terminate the internet connection, BUT IT DIDN'T TURN OFF, and though the indicator in the top right of the screen said it was off, packets were still streaming back & forth like crazy on the activity monitor, and the poor thing was still overheating. So I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up there was no internet activity, and things started cooling down, back to normal again.
     Though I'm no techie, this seems to me like my computer has been hijacked by some virus that has taken control of the airport and is feeding me lies about the internet connection status, so that it can use my computer for sending out its own messages. Has anyone heard of a virus that prevents the airport from being turned off, and what should I do about it? I'm afraid to back up my data with my time machine, though its been months since that was done, for fear I'd overwrite a virus-free state of the time machine files with a virus laden one, but I also hate to do something to clean up the machine without backing up my files, and lose a bunch of data. Is there virus protection software that could surgically search out and remove only the virus from my machine and leave most everything else untouched?

    Try Changing the Airport Channel
    Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
    Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
    Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
    Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.

  • NVIDIA MCP61 Ethernet VERY SLOW

    I just installed Arch on my  parents computer, and the ethernet  is  crawling on  it. Package downloads keep on timing out, even when I try to install  them over the LAN with pacserve.  Not sure what to do  about this, I tried googling for issues with  this card, but couldn't find anything.  There were a few other issues that people were havine with  the forcedeth  driver, but I didn't find a solution.

  • Time Capsule on Ethernet extreeeeeeeeeeeeemely slow.

    Hi,
    Why is copying one 8.9GB file from a MacPro to a 2TB Time Capsule 10.8465 times slower than copying to a G5 iMac?
    There are the only three networked devices on my Ethernet LAN. The Time Capsule is only used for Time Machine; no file/printer sharing, no Internet connection, etc. The MacPro, G5 iMac, and Time Capsule are connected to a LinkSys 100/10 Router which is connected to a broadband Internet connection.
    Copying the file from the MacPro to the G5 iMac took 13 minutes.
    Copying the file from the MacPro to the Time Capsule took 2 hours and 21 minutes.
    Entering "Star Wars" on the Time Capsule is too slow, so I have given up trying to restore. BTW - "Stars Wars" is very fast when I use a local disk with Time Machine. Backups are also significantly faster with a local disk.
    For several weeks I have read everything I can find about Time Capsule's slow performance, but nothing helped.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL REALLY BE APPRECIATED. <<<</div>
    If there is no solution for Time Capsule's terrible performance, the I've wasted my hard earned $500. Probably better off to dedicate a MacPro's local disk for both computers' Time Machines.

  • Tips For Solving the Mac OS X Lion Slowness (Lots of Beach Balls)

    Hi Folks,
    Just a quick list of tips for this issue that some of Mac OS X Lion users face.
    The main symptom is that we get the Beach Ball on almost any task, it takes 4, maybe five times more time to do what we need to do. So depending on the schedule, it can drive us crazy. I was facing that, and started to think that Lion was a Windows Vista relative.
    Please remind that the tips below involve backing up and restoring your system. If you are not careful, you may lose everything. You are responsible for your acts. Be cautious!
    How I solved my issue:
    1) Checked for Disk Permissions and the Disk itself:
    - Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility:
    - Click on your disk, and then VERIFY DISK. If everything is OK, move on. If it is not, REPAIR DISK.
    - Now click on VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. If everthing is OK, move. If not, Repair.
    This step 1 is to make sure that your slowness is due to something related to the OS itself and not to permissions/disk.
    If this solves the slowness, then you are OK. Now further steps are necessary. In my case, this just helped a little bit. The beach-balling reduced by 20% only. Still too slow.
    2) Do a full backup of your system.
    I used Time Machine. Make sure you have all of your applications closed. So the backup will be full. If you fail to do a good backup, you will lose everything! Make sure you do a good one. Maybe do it twice on 2 different disks! Now you have been warned.
    3) Do a Full Restore of your entire system.
    Now, get that Install CD that came with your Mac,
    - Put it on your drive, shut down your computer.
    - While holding the C key, press the start button of your Mac. It will boot using the Install CD that came with your Mac.
    To recover your entire system:
    Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer. If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
    Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
    In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
    In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
    Select your Time Machine backup volume.
    Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
    4) Remove the CD, and boot.
    When I did that, the system came back very fast and responsive. No more beach balls (only on the really-intensive tasks), and everything was back to normal.
    5) So, what was it anyways?
    Before doing this Backup/Restore, I was getting lots of DISK I/O ERRORS, specially during boot time (you can check that by shutting down your mac, powering it back on and imediatelly pressing Command-V - Verbose Mode).
    Sure, the first thing in mind was that I had a faulty hard drive, but I checked it several times for errors (via Disk Utility), and nothing showed up.
    So I decided to do a full backup/restore of the system. And it solved it, at least for me.
    My config:
    MacBook Pro (2009 edition) - 5 GB RAM - 640 GB HD - Mac OS X 10.7

  • Equium M40X - slow internet dropped packets

    I'm using wi-fi and my pc keeps dropping packets every so often (and also does when connected via LAN) making my internet connection a bit slow.
    I have had my wifi router changed and it's still doing it.
    Thought about upgrading BIOS and wireless driver here but it's too risky, long winded and may not cure it anyway.
    My gut feeling is some process is kicking in every so often and slowing things down (my mouse movements sometimes freeze for a few secs).
    I have AVG antivirus installed, have run scan and no viruses found.
    I've defragged and run registry cleaner.
    Any ideas I can try to find what's causing it. cheers

    I dont know if its really a problem!
    I use WiFi very often and I have noticed similar issue.
    But it depends really from the website and from server which I connect.
    However, the WLan driver update should be done at first to check if this could sort the WiFi issue but to be honest Im not sure if this is a WLan problem due to the fact that this also happens while using the LAN.
    I think you should check if a Windows updates are possible and available.
    If the new BIOS versionis available check if the BIOS update helps.
    Using a firewall could have a bad influence on the transmission too!

  • TimeCapsule ethernet throughput slow

    Hi Guys,
    I'm having trouble that's similar but slightly different to a lot of the posts already here.
    I have a 500GB TimeCapsule and use it as a wireless access point.
    It is connected via Cat5e cable to a 1gb switch which is then connected to my ADSL modem.
    When my PC is connected via Cat6 cable to teh 1gb swtich, my download and transfer speeds are normal for my internet connection (8mb), however if I connect my pc (using the same cable) to my timecapsule, the speed drops to around 1mb.
    I have similar issues with the wireless which makes me think there's something wrong with the ethernet ports/speeds.

    Thanks for checking on that. When the TC is in bridge mode, all the Ethernet ports behave just like an Ethernet switch, so if the ports are operating correctly, the device should act as a pass through with minimal effect on any network connection speed.
    If you connect the TC directly to one of the Ethernet  ports on your modem/gateway, bypassing the switch, what results do you get that way?

  • Time capsule ethernet transfer slow

    I have a new 3 tb time capsule.  I have used it to back up my mac before doing a fresh install.  I also transfered my large 250gb iphoto library via ethernet cable to the time capsule in a seperate folder.  When I completed the new install of mountain lion I used migration assistant to transfer the base data and then individually transfered documents and sub folders with minial fuss. 50 gb taking 1hr.  I am now trying to transfer the iphoto library and it is giving me a 7-22 days transfer time.  This makes no sense, please advise.

    Time estimates are displayed using the current connection rate.
    It is normal for the backup to start quite slowly as it tries to analyze all of the data to be backed up or transferred,  and then speed up significantly for the bulk of the transfer and then slow down a bit toward the end of the backup.

  • WiFi is Fast, But Ethernet Extremely Slow

    On both my old 2008 24" iMac and my brand new 27" iMac, the Internet is extremely slow when the Ethernet cable is plugged in. When it's unplugged and I'm on WiFi, it's lightning quick.
    When I'm on Ethernet, even retrieving text-only emails from Mail is painfully slow, as if I'm on dial-up. Web pages that are light on graphics take forever to load, regardless of browser. Safari, Firefox, Chrome, doesn't make a difference.
    It's not all the time, sometimes it's very quick, but most of the time it's so slow it's unusable.
    Some things I've tried on my own:
    New Ethernet cable - no difference
    Plugging into different ports on cable modem - no difference
    Unplugging cable modem, waiting a couple minutes, plugging back in - no difference
    Had the cable company out, they checked everything and saw nothing wrong on their end
    Plugged my wife's Windows laptop into the modem - web pages load very quickly
    I added a DNS address to System Preferences > Network - no difference
    When I go to a website such as Speedtest.net, it routinely shows 60-70 Mb/s download (I'm paying for 60). Even if I'm on Ethernet, it may take forever to actually load the Speedtest page, but once I do and hit "Test", it comes back with at least 60 Mb/s.
    System specs are as follows: Late 2013 27" iMac, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GM RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 4 MB graphics card, 1 TB fusion drive.
    Based on everything I've tried above, I don't think it's the modem or the cable company, but something in the Mac. When I got the new computer, I transferred everything from the old via Time Machine. I'm hoping I didn't transfer some obscure setting that is preventing the Ethernet from running at its full potential...
