Ethernet multicast per AP?
Using the wcs 4402 controllers. we can enable multicast under the general properties which affects all APs connected to it. Is there a way to have multicast support for just a few APs? We have some mac users that want to run "bonjour" (formerly rendevous) and the app relies on multicast being enabled, however, it puts an extra load on the wireless network
It's my understanding from a class that multicasts in the LWAPP system are handled externally to the LWAPP tunnel (i.e., through the routers as "plain old" multicasts.
It's that recollection is correct, then you can control the multicasts only to those zones that you want to propagate them using PIM.
True or not, here's a list of links from the main Cisco site with some details about setting up multicast groups on the LWAPP system.
A "group" is a specific multicast address that would limit the multicasts to specific LWAPS / zones.

WLC controller Ethernet Multicast Mode
When do you enable the ethernet multicast mode on controller? In my test lab, I have it disabled and I have not seen any issues so far. Thanks.
When you are supporting Wireless Applications that require MC, such as Spectralink's (ca use MC for registration as well as Push-to-Talk).
However, it is a common mistake to use the same MC group that your application uses.... Wrong! The WLC controller actually uses the configured MC group to distribute MC traffic to the joined AP's, so you really want to use a group that is not used by the actual applications.
(don't forget to rate all responses) -
Could someone explain how multicast traffic is handled for specific customer in carrier network . The Main office and remote offices are connected via L2 Ethernet service.
The question I have is since WAN ethernet is shared medium once my multicast traffic is get into the carrier network how they handle the multicast traffic.
1.Should all the customers will receive the multicast traffic? OR
2.Somehow the traffic will be routed to my remote offices only by the carrier. How they do ?
3. Do I need to ask carrier any specific questions regarding Multicast when I subscribe WAN Ethernet service.
Thank you,
Raja RamasamyRaja, the MVPN concept in L3VPN needs the SP backbone to be multicast enabled in contrast to L2VPN, where the multicst traffic is switched as any other traffic.
For idea behind MVPN in MPLS is to encapsulate VPN multicast packets into a multicast GRE tunnel which connects all the PE's where this VRF termiates. (this is controlled by the Default MDT configuration).
So essentially you build a backbone within a backbone for your end customer.
When the backbone is in place via default MDT, to enhance traffic forwarding to only intrested receivers and not to all end points, data MDT is put in place which forwards traffic between a source and intrested destinations. (this can be configured to trigger when a certain data threshold is crossed using the default MDT path for multicast traffic)
Here is a neat white paper with illustrations for reference.

Ethernet multicasting without IP
Does somebody have experience with switching pure multicast traffic? (layer 2, with on top a proprietary connectionless layer 3-7 messaging protocol). I have one multicast source, sending m-packets to 27 other stations all listening to the same group address and all are connected to a 2950-switch. Traffic load is minimal (<3%) but 99% is multicast. For an unknown reason, the switch is dropping an awful lot of packets. Many, many thanks for any suggestions.
Try it with a hub (not a switch) for diagnostic purposes.
If you are still seeing lost packets, then it is likely to something the receiver's inability to to queue and process the volume of traffic.
Passing broadcast and multicast traffic is not a big deal for a switch; with no configuration (out-of-the-box) any switch is will pass any (unerrored) broadcast or multicast traffic. The architecture of the switching fabric makes it a trivial task.
That being said, you may want to check out the broadcast supression settings (I don't think it applies, because are using multicast (right?)), but there are thresholds that can be adjusted for the amount of broadcast traffic you consider "normal."
Check out this link, especially the part under "Understanding Storm Control:"
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a0080212a9f.html
The reason I suggested a hub is because hubs are repeaters; they don't "store & forward" ... they don't act on the signal at all .... they just repeat the traffic pulse-for-pulse to all the other ports.
If you use a hub, and the problem remains, it's not an infrastructure problem, it's a transmitter / receiver problem (probably the host side processing ability, hardware or software).

WLC - AP Groups - Multicast - Bonjour - Apple TVv3
Good Morning
first off - Should start off by saying I have followed the Apple Bonjour deployment guide [except for interface group] portion
I have searched high and low, here and there to no avail.

I am aware that the bonjour gateway IOS may or may not come out in Oct/Nov 2012, which maybe my only option at this point.
Is this not working because of my AP groups setup or have I misssed something
I can only get bonjour to work if multicast - unicast mode is selected, but our network slowly grinds to a halt, so it is not an option
when I first connect to the wireless I see 1 bonjour device for about 3 minutes and then disappears.
I can not see the appletv at all with an ipad, airplay does not appear at all.
We have the following setup.

DLSW ethernet redundancy for multiple vlans
Can dlsw ethernet redundancy support mutliple vlans with the following configuration?
host dlsw router1 host dlsw router2
| |
local dlsw router 1 local dlsw router2
| |
ethernet switch1-------ethernet switch2
Ethernet switch1 and 2 are supporting multiple vlans and connected to local dlsw router1 and 2 through 802.1Q. SNA support is required for the vlans of ethernet switch1 and 2 .
We found that configuration of dlsw ethernet redundancy is not allowed on the 802.1Q sub-interface of the local dlsw router1 and 2. In this case, how can dlsw ethernet redundancy can be supported for SNA server attached to multiple vlans? Can you provide us some reference / sample for dlsw ethernet redundancy to support SNA servers attached to different vlans in a switch environment.
Thanks.I think that I understand the problem. I am thinking the following:
dlsw local-peer peer-id 2.2.2.2 promiscuous
dlsw transparent switch-support
interface Ethernet0
mac-address 0000.3333.3333
dlsw transparent redundancy-enable 9999.9999.9999 master-priority 10
dlsw transparent map local-mac 0000.6666.0000 remote-mac 0200.eca2.0000 neighbor 0000.5555.5555
interface Ethernet1
mac-address 0000.4444.4444
dlsw transparent redundancy-enable 9999.9999.0001 master-priority 10
dlsw transparent map local-mac 0000.6666.0001 remote-mac 0200.eca2.0000 neighbor 0000.7777.7777
Of course, you need an ethernet interface per VLAN. If you need DLSw ER over dot1q interface, please contact the local Cisco Sales Rep or partner. You are not the first one to ask for it. Hope that there is a strong business case to initiate the new feature. -
WiSM - "CPU Receive Multicast Queue is full on controller"
After we upgrade to WiSM 4.1.185.0 for 5 days, we got critical
alert message about "CPU Receive Multicast Queue is full on
Controller" from one controller. We have never seen this error in previous
versions. I do not see high CPU usage on the controller now. What could be wrong?
Thanks!
ZhenningYes we have ethernet multicast disabled on the controller. I cannot see that bug it is saying available to employee only.
I only see this message once. I opened a TAC case and I was told it could be caused by traffic and this message should not effect anything.

Use Time Capsule over ethernet only?
Running Mavericks. Have a 2 TB surplus Time Capsule that I would like to use to back up an iMac using an ethernet cable between the iMac and the TC rather than wirelessly. (I am trying to avoid yet another Wi-Fi device on my Airport Extreme network and the reduced performance that comes with extending a network.) Indeed I have made this work per Bob Timmons prior posts by hooking the TC to both the iMac and temporarily to the Airport Extreme via ethernet cable.
Due to house configuration, it is not possible for me to permanently run ethernet between the Airport Extreme and the TC. In my experimenting, after setup I unhooked the connection between TC and Airport Extreme and the iMac and I thought the iMac was continuing to recognize the TC and backup to it over ethernet, but after a re-start I cannot get that configuration to work again.
1. Do I understand that the design of the TC is such that it cannot be used as an attached ethernet hard drive for Time Machine backups unless it is at all times also connected to a [Airport Extreme] router?
2. If No. 1 above is true, is there any wireless configuration of the TC that would allow for the benefits of ethernet connection to the iMac but not have the permanent router/TC ethernet connection?
3. Finally, if I am out of luck on ethernet only from the iMac, since I don't use the iMac wirelessly for anything, can a create a new network with the TC and have the iMac wirelessly connect with that without a permanent router connection?
Thanks very muchThanks for your insightful questions and comments!
If you have an Ethernet cable connected to the iMac, the iMac will default to the Ethernet connection, even if wireless is on at the iMac.So, if you want to backup the iMac over wireless, you will have to manually disconnect the Internet Ethernet cable at the iMac every time that you want to back up the iMac. Once the backup over wireless is completed, then you will have to connect the Internet Ethernet cable again to the iMac.
Is this true? I was referring to the ethernet cable running between the iMac and the TC, not the main ethernet connection to my home network. My entire goal here has been to simply hookup the TC to the iMac solely for backup purposes via ethernet. However, you have convinced my I cannot do that without the TC also being connected to the Airport router at the same time., which I believe is not practical for the reasons below. So again, assuming that the iMac is connected to the TC via the TC's separate wireless network, is not the ethernet cable between iMac and TC not used - or will the iMac communicate to the TC via faster ethernet instead of defaulting to the slower wireless network?
The iMac is about 12" away from the iMac and I am not trying to hide it - I just want to use it as a ethernet backup disk!
I guess I'm wondering why.....if the Mac connects to the AirPort Extreme using Ethernet.....you cannot connect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to the Time Capsule first, then connect another Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to your iMac.
Then, the iMac is always connected using Ethernet, and you won't have to use wireless at all. You can backup over the much faster Ethernet connection. Everything will stay connected all the time.....no cable disconnecting.....and you have the best performance as well.
Good question! My newly remodeled house has an ethernet network wired throughout. One ethernet outlet per room. (The Airport Extreme router connects to a Comcast modem via the ethernet network, each in separate rooms. I was able to connect the TC to the Airport router using an 80 foot temporary cable running between rooms.) Maybe there is a way to have the TC "share" the iMac single ethernet port in the room that I am not aware of? Appreciate your thoughts.
But, again....If the TC and iMac will be close to each other....why mess with wireless and cable swapping when you can do everything over Ethernet, and always stay connected to the AirPort Extreme network.
You are preaching to the choir. I don't want to use wireless at all for backup or even have it on for my iMac. The lack of a connection between TC and Airport router is what seems to be stopping me.
The TC will create both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network automatically. The iMac will look at both signals and choose the best with which to connect. If the iMac has line-of-sight, or is in the same room as the TC, then it will likely connect at the faster 5 GHz connection.
And here is the last puzzle. Assuming that I cannot resolve the ethernet to router issue, I am today backing up to the TC (also connected via ethernet cable to iMac) via the separate WiFi network created by the TC. The backup has worked several times today. Despite this, Airport Utility reports that the TC cannot be found even though it was "previously part of the network." Any ideas on that one?

TS2959 Snow Leopard Server "invalid serial number" due to bridged ethernet
Help,,
Snow Leopard server continues to claim "invalid Serial number"
due to bridged ethernet. (It is valid when I unbridge..invalid when I bridge,)
Apple claimed to fix this bug here
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2959
But has not.
I need bridged ethernet for multiple servers within virtualbox.
Any ideas? You'll want to figure out why you have both 10.0.2.2 and 192.168.1.113 addresses here for the same host (and particularly where the host doesn't know about the second and separate subnet as "itself"); that's incorrect, and that's the likely trigger. I'm guessing there's NAT here, and NAT gets ugly in general.
This isn't so much a problem with Apple's serial number licensing, it's with the disparate addressing configuration combined with a NAT "device" that's also passing Ethernet multicasts. Taken together, you're seeing exactly what is expected with that. The OS X Server licensing is doing exactly what it should be doing.
What's happening is that the network configuration error here means that OS X Server is detecting itself via a typical Ethernet multicast, and with a different NAT'd address that it doesn't recognize as its own; as being itself, via a NAT. Other stuff that uses Ethernet multicasts, too, so protocols including Bonjour will likely be cranky within this configuration, too. DNS, as was mentioned earlier, must also be configured for this; if you have a host with its own self-IP and visibility to a NAT'd IP visible, then DNS will get cranky. Security, too, will get cranky when DNS is cranky. And Open Directory, being based on DNS and IP and security, will very likely get confounded, too.
You can either block the Ethernet multicasts from crossing at the NAT device (which is what a NAT firewall does), or can switch to a routed network configuration and get rid of NAT (which is what a router and IP subnet routing does).
And irrespective of the rest of the discussion around licensing and multicasts, having anything in 192.168.1.0/24 is a bit messy, if you're planning on getting VPNs involved. Using another subnet (in this case) within the 10.0.0.0/8 block would be a better choice, rather than 192.168.0.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/24 subnets. -

Hola:
I buy a gigabit switch. I connect the service-port to gigabit switch, and laptop to gigabit switch. I used 192.168.1.x ip address (192.168.1.157 to service-port and 192.168.1.233 to wired port on laptop, well, the laptop has two ip adress, 192.168.1.233 and 209.165.200.2, and the laptop works ok. Ping to 209.165.200.230 -ip address of management interface- and ping to 209.165.200.203 -ip address for AP, is assigned by DHCP of WLC. And i connect the ap to gigabit switch, and the wlc assigns well an ip direction.
I post the run-config and sysinfo log. The gigabit switch is tp-link model tl-sg1005d, no configuration.
Before the logs, I see this message from AP:
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
Hola:
He comprado un switch gigabit.
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
Un saludo

Guest wireless in 7.0.98 hitting the splash page
I have set up Guest wireless before with my own customized splash screen for local authentication on version 5.xx on a 4404 controller.
I have the same task again but this time with a 2201 controller and the latest ios.
Try as hard as I can i cannot get a guest wireless user to hit the splash page where it gives the certificate warning or past that to the login box.
Is there some subtle difference in the set up with 7.0.98. I did notice that when setting up the DHCP scope for the 7.0.98 i had to use the DHCP server IP as the managment interface. On my last try with 5.x I used the 192.168.80.1 address (the guest WLAN) So there is a difference right there.
Anyway the clients get an IP address so no issue there but i cannot get the cert warning up let alone the splash page. Eveidently there is a tick box I am missing. I wouldnt mide but having done this a few times before I am really stumped. I have wiped the config and started again going through my old notes step by step plus digging out the cisco documentation.
If there any debugging I can stick on please let me know.
Thanks,
NeilThank you :-) Hopefully I have captured everything you need.

Hi There,
I just wanted to clear something up in my mind about Forte Global Events.
By a Forte Global Event I mean an event that is posted in a method of an
EVSO.
Presumably there is no internal application logic to such a posting, as to
what machines it is destined to go to, ie, it is a straight Network
Broadcast (255.255.255.255)
1.
If this is the case, and your phsyical network consists of a number of
sub-nets, it could potentially be broadcast to all devices on all sub-nets,
assuming that your router didn't prevent this.
In order to prevent such broadcasts, presumably, the router would disable
all broadcasts destined to logical port X, which would be the port that Forte
communicates via, to all clients and servers.
Would this port X, be defined as the same port number that is used by the
NameService (?)
2.
If the above is true then presumably it would be considered better to
some application logic to direct the posting of a global event only to active
clients, ie, pass to a server cache, anchored objects from the Client, and loop through
these active clients posting an event to each.
- CarlEvent propagation is a favorite subject of mine.
So I'll join in this discussion.
My view is Forte Events is one of the coolest features of the
system. It is something you usually have to pay a lot
for elsewhere. But hidden in the details of Event propagation
and reception are deep issues where different vendors and
different implementation techiques can have enormously big
impacts on scalability. It turns something that seems rather
simple and benign (posting Events) into a big differentiating factor.
What Forte calls Events is called Publish/Subscribe elsewhere.
I divide Publish/Subscribe into two subclasses: Anonymous and Registered.
Anonymous Publish/Subscribe is where the publisher never knows
who is subscribed at any particular moment. The publisher
publishes blindly, as it were. Examples are Ethernet Multicast,
Radio, TV, Satellite Downlink, etc. Maybe no one is listening,
maybe the whole world. It doesn't matter to the publisher.
Registered Publish/Subscribe is where the publisher does keep
a list of subcribers and sends an individual message to each.
Examples are various forms of push technology, magazine and
periodical publishers, and Forte's event model.
Yes, Forte implements in its event model a form of Registered
Publish/Subscribe. They hide the details of the registration
and deregistration process from the programmer using their
"Post..." and "Event Loop ... When <event> " language
constructs and their sophisticated runtime system.
But everything about the registration is still there under
the covers. Forte is keeping a list of listeners and sending a
message to each one.
So what is the difference between Anonymous and Registered
publish/subscribe from a performance standpoint? From the
subscriber's vantage point, not much. You see the same message
regardless. From the network's point of view (and the publisher's)
there are big differences, especially if you are running over shared
media (such as ethernet).
With Registered Publish/Subscribe the network sees N copies
of the same message being sent, one to each registered listener.
For a large number of listeners this traffic can be
overwhelming and can choke your network.
From the publishers point of view, there is the enormous cost of creating and sending individual messages to each subscriber.
You could, if you were really clever about this, decide to
compute the message (serializing the object graphs and
all that) just once and then sending the message N times.
But I don't think Forte runtime is this clever. Nothing
prevents them from doing this in the future. In fact I
suspect this is one of the reasons Forte's designers hide
the fact of the registration process so well that you cannot
gain access to the list of registered listeners. This will allow
them in the future to tranparently swap out the costly
one-message per listener messaging
model and swap in a more efficient model based on true
Anonymous Publish/Subscribe without a change to the language.
Why is Anonymous Publish/Subscribe more efficient? Because
it uses just a single message broadcast to all destinations.
Much easier on the publisher (server) and the network.
Harder on the subscriber (client) since it receives all the
messages and must filter out the ones it is not interested in.
To solve the "all clients see everything" problem, you can
switch to multicast and provide a way to manage the mapping of
events into different multicast groups. TIBCO and other pub/sub
messaging vendors do this quite well on Ethernet to avoid flooding
every workstation with the entire multicast traffic. I'm not
trying to plug TIBCO here (they are a subsidiary of Reuters,
the company I work for). Just using them as an example of
how this can be done differently.
Footnote: of course, in order to construct the "event" message
just once and send it N times you have to implement a policy such
as "receiver makes right" or always sending "network byte order".
By definition you only generate one message. So it has to be
readable by clients of any byte order or machine architecture.
As Carl points out below, there are good reasons for using
a Registered Publish/Subscribe Model. This occcurs where you
want to perform something special for each client, such as to
send a different message or to not send (filter) the message at all.
These types of decision have to be made on a listener-by-listener
basis.

Thanks to Dale V. Georg and David Bell for their quick reponses.
It appears that my assumptions were completely incorrect and that
when an object registers an event on another object in a remote
partition that Forte keeps track of this and when that event is posted,
Forte directs it to only those references.
With this in mind then, I presume that I am correct in assuming that,
1.
Global events are not as network traffic intensive, as I was lead to believe,
ie, you can actually use them, if the need arises.>
2.
it would mean that if you were to want to broadcast a global event
it would probably be more efficient to let Forte do the posting, and
not try yourself to build up a list of references to active client partitions
and post individually to them one at a time. The only time you would want
to really do this would be if you were to broadcast to a subset of
the active cilents, using a single event.
Thanks,

Hi All,
I'm trying to configure the PTP on the ASR9001 and I'd like to use the transport mode ETHERNET instead of IPv4.
From the RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:ASR9001-2#show ptp interfaces it look likes that the Ethernet capability is not supported:

Linestate: Up
Mechanism: Two-step delay-request-response
Sync rate: every second
Announce rate: every 2 seconds, timeout 3 intervals
Min Delay-Request rate: every second
CoS: General 6, Event 6, DSCP: General 46, Event 46

WLC 2504 sudden network instability
Hello,
we're running a WLC 2504 with two SSIDs on it. It is connected to to a small PoE switch. Standard untagged vlan. A handfull APs connected to it. No DHCP, the APs have all static IP addresses.
All of a sudden we're having a number of issues with the network connection:
APs restarting
The APs restart every now and then reporting that their IP is being used by another device. Looking through the logs there are two MAC addresses that are reported as using the APs IP address. These two MAC addresses have unknown vendor IDs.
Warning: AP with Base Radio MAC f8:72:ea:7c:9d:e3 has found its IP Address 0.2.146.0 being used by a machine with MAC
Address 04:c6:f8:40:00:00 (The other mac that is reported is 04:cc:90:40:00:00)
AP 'AP5', MAC: 0c:68:03:dd:1b:80 disassociated previously due to Link Failure. Uptime: 4 days, 00 h 48 m 50 s . Reason: Capwap WTP Event request.
So: There are two MACs that use the IP addresses of 7 APs?!?! And there is no vendor to be found for these MACs?
Ping timouts on the webGUI and CLI
I have a ping running on the IP for managing the device. This is running fine for ages. As soon as I connect via webGUI or CLI I lose packets. Get timeouts etc. some packets get through some don't. More of the latter. So ping is fine but any other traffic seems to be impacted heavily.
What we have done for troubleshooting
Checked duplex/speed settings of the interfaces. Everything ok.
Connected to another switchport. Same.
Changed the IP address of the management port. Same.
Swapped places with a laptop with the same IP address --> Worked fine.
Plugged in a completely new device, installed the latest firmware (7.6) and uploaded the config from the other one. Same.
Restarted the default gateway for the subnet the controler is on.
So now we're at the end of our knowledge. It seems to be a non-physical network issue, but we're a small team and no one has changed anything they say :-/
Any ideas what we could check next?
KatHello,
thanks for your suggestions. It's hard to find those two MAC addresses. As they seem to be virtual I cannot get a hint from the vendor ID. A show mac-address table on the switch the WLC is connected to doesn't show those two
I found an error in the WLC AP config. AP1 had the same IP as AP5 and a wrong netmask. I changed that. Unfortunately that doesn't solve our problem.
Here are some more messages from the WLC's log:
