Ethernet network printing problems

I have a HP deskjet 5650 connected to a flat-panel iMac in one room and a new G5 iMac in another room. Both computers are hooked into a Linksys cable modem router through ethernet. Printer sharing is enabled on the flat panel. The G5 apparently "sees" the printer because it appears in the printer setup utility as a shared printer, but when I try and print from the G5 I get an error message after I see a brief processing window. I already tried resetting the printer setup utility.
The printer works fine from the flat panel and if I disconnect it and hook it up to the G5 it prints fine also. So it must be a network issue. Any thoughts?

Okay rather than use shared printing, you may want to try IP printing instead.
Look at this guide on the information you will need from the Mac hosting the printer.
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3000.html
Then on the other Mac:
On the Mac double click Printer Setup Utility in the Utilities folder in Applications.
You will now be faced with a new window.
Hold down the Option key and click More Printers.
Where you click the drop down box to see Windows Printing, IP Printing, etc... you should now see an entry called Advanced.
Click Advanced you should now see a new dialogue
From the drop down box change the Device: to Internet Printing Protocol using http
Device Name: <the share name of your shared printer> which you will get from the Hosting Mac.
Device URI: http://<IP address of Mac>:631/printers/Queue Name
Therefore if your IP address is 10.0.1.5 and the queue name is HP_DeskJet
http://10.0.1.5:631/printers/HP_DeskJet
Printer Model: the relevant driver or relevant HPIJS or Gimp-Print driver
You may need to use a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers or the Gimp-Print drivers, but this is not the case with all printers.
Click Add.

  • USB or ethernet/network printer?

All Mac system running wireless. Airport extreme base station in center of house with long ethernet cord running into all-ethernet hub in a different room. Currently have network printer plugged into all-ethernet hub. Works fine, but want to replace printer w/all-in-one. Do I need to get ethernet/network printer for my all-in-one or can I buy USB all-in-one and connect to ethernet hub w/adaptor? If the latter, which adaptor?

If your AirPort Extreme Base Station has a USB port then it supports USB Printer Sharing - you should be able to plug your USB printer into the base station and print to it from any Mac on the network.
If you're trying to position the printer a distance from the base station, though (you don't say how far it is), that won't work. Your options there are to either get an ethernet port for the printer (preferred), or connect it directly to a Mac and use printer sharing on that Mac to make it available to other clients on the network. The disadvantage of the latter solution is that the Mac will need to be on in order for other clients to print.

  • Can't print to ethernet networked printer... suddenly!

Today, for some reason I can't print to our networked printer, a Kyocera FS-6950DN laser. All I am getting now is a 'Network host is busy, will retry in 10/15 secs' and the job just holds.
So, what have I tried. To eleminate any printer issues I have successful managed to print direct from my MacBook (also running OSX 10.6.8) without a problem. So the printer seems fine. However, if a connect directly (again via a single ethernet cable) to my MacPro it won't print. I have deleted the printer and created a new one. Actually, I have done this several times. When I go to create a new printer I can see the printer listed a a bonjour printer. I select it, then I use 'generic postcript'.  I can choose the my printer here, but I seem to remember that this was a problem when I set it up originally and I was advised to use the generic option. I click add and that used to work. But not now. I have checked that the printer has a static ip address and it does. I have also tried adding the printer as an IP printer and adding the IP address etc maually, but again this doesn't work. I've tried this both with LPD set or IPP set. I get the same busy error message.
Trawling the net I have noticed lots of people with Kyocera print issues relating to the latest OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update. Although having succesfully printed from my MacBook that would suggest that 10.6.8 isn't the issue in my case.
Any help or pointers in the right diection would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks – Roy
I should also say that I have done the usual... repaired the permissions and reset the PRAM etc. I have ping tested the connection from my MacPro and there is a response from the printer. It's just not finding the printer when I send the job to print?

Managed to fix this by changing the ip address on the printer. It seems that the address was out of range for our new router. Changed the printers static address back to something within range and the printer bust into life. Simple as that. Only took me a day and a half to work it out... : )
If you have similar issues I hope that my post is helpful.

  • Network printing problems using an iMac as the server

I am running an iMac OS 9 computer as a server. There are three computers (an iMac, an iBook both running OS 9, and a Powerbook G4, running OS 10.4) connected to the server via ethernet.
Here is the problem: all three computers have been printing from the network printer for over 2 years with no problems whatsoever. As of late, all three stations are attempting to print unsuccessfuly with a message stating that the document cannot be printed because the printer could not be found. The error message asks if you would like to cancel printing or try again. After trying again the document successfully prints (sometimes after one attempt, other times after several attempts). The chooser is recognizing the printer and all settings seem to be correct. I have notice that when selecting the chooser the printer icon does not show up immediately. There appears to be a bit of a delay before the network recognizes it. The printing funtion will work, it is just a bit frustrating that you must sometimes make more than one attempt to print. It does not occur everytime you attempt to print, only most of the time.
One more note, in conjuntion with this error, I have noticed that other applications running through the server will run lightning fast and then all of a sudden will seem to run very slow. When working within an application, windows will appear to freeze for a short time and them resume normally.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Powerbook G4/iMac/ibook   Mac OS 9.2.x   Mac OS 9.2 iMac Server/Powerbook G4

I personally use ElGato and it works great, and I too don't use the DVR functionality.

  • HP LaserJet - network printer problem FIXED

    Hi,
I'm aware this may not work for all, but I've sorted my own problems, which I suspect are common to many who still have a really solid HP (or other) network printer that was no longer available since Snow Leopard did away with Apple Talk.
The answer is to do a cold reset on your printer, give it a new IP address, find this IP by printing a configuration page and enter this IP when you go to set up a new printer. In my case, it automatically found the correct drivers. The drivers were never the issue with vanishing printers; it was all about the network IP address. A quick search online and you will find how to do the cold reset and config page. For my 2100TN, it was a case of holding down the cancel button when powering up the printer until the lights flashed for a new IP, and to print, press both buttons.
    Hope this helps.

    Problem solved.
I upgraded the printer's firmware which resolved the issue.
    Thanks anyway! :-)

  • Cups/Xfce network printing problem

I'm really pulling my hair out over this problem, I've tried everything I can think of and everything suggested to me by helpful #archlinux users... So let me start by saying what I am trying to do... It is quite simple in theory.
I have a box running Debian etch with a printer which I am trying to use from this local Arch box.
So Debian has Cups on it and one printer which is shared and published and I have access to the Cups server from this box. I can successfully access the web interface of that box and print a test page. The Cups version on Debian is 1.2.7 (old).
On this box I have a fully updated Arch and I have Cups (1.3.7). Without any configuration, my local Cups web interface shows the printer from the Debian box. I'm not really sure how this works but it appears to relay everything to the remote Cups. I cannot test this printer properly because this leads to a maybe unrelated Xfce issue. Xfce will not show any of my Cups printers (the printing system is set to Cups).
I have followed this section of the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUP … x_to_Linux And lpq gives me this error:
    # lpq
lpq: error - no default destination available.
So instead maybe I will try to add the printer to my local Cups as a network printer. I choose ipp (http) and add the correct url, select either the foomatic HP 940C drivers (correct) or Generic Postscript drivers. The printer is now shown in my local Cups web interface (but not Xfce). If  I try to print a test page, however, I get this error in the log:
E [03/May/2008:17:26:24 +0100] [Job 11] Print file was not accepted (Quota limit reached.)!
So in a nutshell I have two possibly unrelated problems. Xfce/lpq cannot find my Cups printers and my Cups cannot print to the remote Cups. I've got to the point where I will just try anything... so any suggestions are welcome, but I don't really want to touch the Debian box, so backporting a newer Cups is not acceptable. Thanks!

    kjon wrote:
You have to check the following:
    1. First of all, having access to your remote cups *doesn't means* that you can print. Do you have the same user/pass on both machines? What about printer permissions? Are you able to *manage* (and I mean _manage_) your printer jobs remotely? What about adding a printer remotely?
    2. In my case was as simple as installing the printer on the remote computer and enable *internet printing* (on server management). This enables the ipp stuff for remote printing.
    3. About printing publishing, have a look on the checkmark "publish printers connected locally to this machine" (or something like that).
And that's all. I don't like to play with lpr because ipp seemed easier, but YMMV. I hope this works for you.
    Greetz.
    1. I don't have the same username and password... The printer allows the user "guest" to print, which does allow me to print a test page from the remote web interface. I can manage jobs using the remote Cups web interface. I can't add a printer remotely because that needs admin permissions...
    2. Not sure where the server management part is. The printer can be used with IPP but it says Quota limit reached.
    3. I have checked the printer publishing stuff. The publishing is working as far as I can tell but the printer just won't take any jobs...

  • P1102w with USB, wired network print problems

Net work is a wired LAN, all workstations run Windows XP SP3
Installed Laserjet P1102w using USB cable. Turned sharing on. Was able to install P1102w on other workstations as wired network printer - But can not print from network work stations - document just sits in print que - Printing from the station printer is hardwired (USB) to works fine

All workstations need to have the printer software installed.
If that does not work, make sure the firewall (on the host and/or remote) stations are not blocking access to the printer.  Windows software is usually not the problem, it is more often the antivirus software's firewall.  Disable it and retest.

  • WRT54GP2 - network printer problems

    Hello,
My connection to my HP2605dn network printer just disappeared after working for almost a year with no problems. I've checked everythig with the printer and it seems to be fine, the printer and the router are talking. I followed the HP instructions to ping the printer and its just not getting through. I have 4 computers that access this printer through the router and none are getting to it. There have been no changes and the internet and VOIP are working fine.
    I tried the usual things:
Shut down all computers, printers, routers and r-started
Changed ports on the router from 101 to 102
    Checked the router settings
Still can't figure it out. Any help here would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Warren

Run a configuration page on the Printer's Menu and see what network settings the printer has. Sometimes the ip address of the printer somehow changed. Download the driver from the hp website and when you find the ip address from the reports menu just use the add printer, local printer, next, create port and in the drop down choose tcp/ip, next and just follow the rest of the steps. Try to upgrade the driver of the printer.

  • Found a possible solution to HP 7520 network printing problems

My problem, as seems to have been reported frequently, is that although my HP 7520 printer is active on my wireless network (i.e., printer network diagnostics all OK and printer can receive HP ePrint jobs), my home computers have generally been unable to submit print jobs directly to the printer.  The error is something like "Unable to Connect blah blah blah".  I used all the methods documented in HP Support articles, and nothing resolved the problem.  I am using a Verizon wireless router, Westell A90-9100EM15-10 (http://westell.com/support/ultraline-series3/a90-9100em15-10) running FW version 50.03.00.10.  After poking around at random, I found the printer's web interface (i.e., at 192.168.1.20) and found an option in the Network -> Wireless (802.11) -> Advanced webpage.  At the very bottom in the "Compatibility" section, there are two options: "In an infrastructure network use 802.11b behavior." and "In an infrastructure network use 802.11b/g behavior."  Neither were checked.  Since my router was configured for both 802.11b/g, I checked the second option.  After clicking "Apply" and allowing the printer to re-connect to the network I do not have the same kinds of printer problems.  I have not done enough follow up testing to be certain, and in one case, a laptop on a wireless connection to my 7520 printer did not seem to be able to connect.  I used the Command terminal and pinged my printer.  Once I did that, the laptop was able to detect the printer, and I was able to submit a print job.  I will follow up in the next day or so to report whether or not I have any further problems.
Here is a screen shot of the HP 7520 configuration webpage I mentioned, and I've circled in blue the option I changed.

These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and make your router secure and hack proof.
    1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers.  Verify your DHCP range and change this
first if needed.  More Wireless Printing help is here.
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the
printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click  Settings Tab/Auto Off.  Or use the Printer
        Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS).
In the router:  (Refer to your router manual for information)
    3. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1,6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    4. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
    5. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    6. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security.  Nobody can hack your
system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    7. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    8. Save all settings.  Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
    9. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.
Windows 7/8/8.1   Is Network Discovery on or off?
Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center/Advanced sharing settings.
Under Home or Work (current profile) / Network Discovery.
Select "Turn on network discovery" and save changes.

  • Network Printer Problem from Mac to Windows

Hi all, hoping someone can help. I have a Canon MF4350d printer which is shared on a windows machine. I can access the windows machine, I have installed the latest drive for this printer onto my mac, from the canon website and when i go to print I get the following:
    Canon UFR ll Printer Driver
    An error occurred.: -50
Then the printer icon starts jumping and when i click on that I see the following under status:
    On Hold(Authentication required)
I have yet to print from this macbook to a networked printer. Very disappointing.
Anyone have this issue? Anyone know of a working fix? Thanks Guys.

If you search within this forum (search block, upper right), you will see that PAHU has answered this several times. For example, search for "UFRII windows."
Printing on OS X isn't quite as simple as on Windows - quite often, manufacturers provide drivers that are limited to the comm protocol "they want you to use," and Windows Printing (SMB) is usually not one of those. In fact, most USB printers get USB-only drivers.

  • Hp Officejet Pro 8600 Plus network printing problems

I hard wired my Hp Officejet Pro 8600 plus with an ethernet cable to my router to enable other computers on my network to print to my printer.  Several problems have resulted because of this:
    1. I cannot find my printer in the Device Manager: it shows as an "unknown device"
    2. Sometimes pdf files will print and sometimes they will not. Word and Excel files sometimes print, and sometimes don't.
    3. Sometimes documents will spool, but then I get the following message: "Unable to communicate with printer." Then it asks me to make sure all cables are connected and power is on, which is the case.
I have tried all kinds of troubleshooting with information found in Hp forum and on Hp website. Finally, using the HP Print and Scan doctor, I deleted and reinstalled the printer and updated the Full software and drivers. Then I got a message saying "the printer is on your network, but the network software is unable to find it using the typical network discovery method. You can install the printer and operate it normally over the network using the IP address of your printer." I inserted the IP address and it took me through various steps to final installation.  I typed a short message into a new document on Microsoft Word and it printed, Then I tried to print some information from the HP website, but this did not print; it didn't even spool.
My router is not detecting the printer on the network either, the light on the port bearing the network cable connected directly to the printer has never been shown to be on, like the other lights. I have been struggling with this for the last several months.
I have an Hp computer, running on Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit). I prefer to use my printer over a network ethernet cable instead of wireless.  Please help!

I believe this is the cause of your problem.  First, try another known working port in the router.  Next, change the Ethernet cable with a known good cable.

I tried to install HP 6500 driver on the Win8 machine, I turned on Network Discovery in the Advanced Sharing Settings on it, but it still doesn't work.

Is there any "general puprpose" driver for HP 6500 E709a, something to replace the WIN8 driver that fails?
