Ethernet on Performa 575

Hello, I got a ethernet card for my Performa from our schools tech department, and I installed it, installed the software, now i have no idea how to get online!! I have Embarq Hi Speed, and i was attempting to hook it up through our wireless router via ethernet cable, however, i couldnt' get anything, I also have a Linksys 5 Port Workgroup switch that is between the Modem and Router, So i have my Powermac running off direct feed instead of through the modem. Anyway.. Do i need to hook up the Performa directly to the Workgroup switch? Or is there something Special i need to do to make it work. The whole network is DHCP, just a normal HI Speed connection. The Performa is running OS7

RJ45 twisted-pair Ethernet is a fast, robust connection method. The cables can be as long as 100 meters (an American Football field). Its tragic flaw is that it is inherently point-to-point, not multi-drop. Hubs, Switches, and the Switch function built into a Router are needed to connect this stuff together so that you can get multiples talking to multiples using that inherently point-to-point connection method.

Once you have the cables installed and have done a restart with an Active connection attached, there is a little configuration required, using the TCP/IP Control Panel (for 7.5.3 with Open transport and later) or older Control Panels -- Network Extension, Network Control Panel, and MacTCP.
This page talks a bit about making sure you have the right Extensions and Control Panels available, and has other info nearby about networking older Macs:

  • IIe card in a LC/Performa 575 computer

    Hi,
I just read this article in Apple database:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=8458
Is there a way to make a 575 uses the IIe card and the COMM slot (with Ethernet) work together, or it is really incompatible all the way?
    Thanks

    Steve@Mac
Although the original Apple IIe Card Owner's Guide (030-4562-A) was all about the Mac LC and System 6.0.8, it became clear in due course that the card had wider support than that. Your link lists the possibilities. There are, however, caveats to consider when choosing a machine from that list. There are two at the foot of the Table in article 8458, one of which Jim cited to you.
You need to be aware that there are other hindrances than obligatory 32-bit operation in the 'host' computer. The LC 575 restriction is a hardware limitation. The Apple IIe Card is a 65C02 Apple IIe within a Mac, working analogously to a DOS compatibility card in a Mac. You will be best off with a 68030 LC machine: any one in the first seven listed; or a CC, or a Performa. Any suitable 680x0 machine is there to provide support for the Apple IIe Card's processor to be itself, but not to provide services that the 65C02 cannot use.
If you intended to have simultaneous use of the Apple IIe card and ethernet for transfer of ProDOS files, Jim's other suggestion (the use of AppleShare) for file transfer, by selecting a notional and optional card in 'Slot 7' from within the Macintosh environment, is the preferable choice, especially if you have previously partitioned the Mac's HDD with a ProDOS partition (up to 10MB) for the purpose.

  • Ethernet IP performance and cRIO

    Hi folks,
I have a control system running on a cRIO 9014. We are using LabVIEW 2009 SP1. This control system must read and write from a PLC at a high frequency. (Once every 10 ms would be ideal, but we can tolerate 20 or 30ms.)
We used to do this with a Profibus module in the chassis attached to the cRIO. We would like to switch to an Ethernet/IP solution. (The PLC is an Allan Bradely Control Logix.)
We noticed a significant slow down in performance when we changed from Profibus to E/IP. So I ran the Profiler on it.
The E/IP driver calls are each taking more then 10 ms on average.
This seems like a long time to send a E/IP message and get back a response.
What kind of time frame should I expect?

Using the Industrial Communications add on for Labview (2011) - so not NI Labs (dunno what then even is).
    Implicit Communications:
    On ControlLogix side:
I have a generic ethernet module representing the cRIO 9074.
A cyclic task at 1ms that increments a watchdog sent to the cRIO with the fast consumed data, which is 16 bytes of data total in my application.
RPI for the generic ethernet module is set to 20ms.
    On the cRIO side:
I have a timed loop set at 10ms (2x RPI) which unpacks the consumed data, and packs some produced data (also 16 bytes total).
I reflect the incoming watchdog back to the ControlLogix, and compute the count difference between the current watchdog value and I see it varying from ~35 to ~80 ms round trip.
cRIO CPU is doing lots of other things at is at ~70% Total Load.
Good enough for my application, but I suppose I could increase priority of the timed loop - CPU Load permitting.
This timed loop reports 1ms iteration duration.
Private 'cubical net' between cRIO port 2, and ENB2TXT module. But that port is sending lots and lots of data to an HMI and an inverter, and a power quality meter (ModbusTCP). CPU is Logix5561
Perhaps that helps you understand EthernetIP performance using the 'upgraded' function blocks?

  • Poor Gigabits Ethernet Receiving Performance

I ran some test with iperf on my nas server. The result is strange.
The server runs iperf in client mode is all good, the bandwidth can reach 900 Mbits/sec or more. However when the server running iperf in server mode then the bandwidth goes down to around 250 Mbits/sec. Repeat test with several other pc, result is very much the same. My other pc can reach gigabits performance good, thats why I focus the problem mainly on my nas server.
I'm searching but not be able to solve it. Your kindly suggest will be helpful! Thanks!
    My server configuration:
    ===========================
    Solaris 11 express and napp-it installed. (http://www.napp-it.org)
Intel e7300 pc with e1000g pluged in.
e1000g0.conf tweaked the jumboframe on (3,3,3,3...)
    /etc/system added following line
    set ndd:tcp_wscale_always=1
    set ndd:tcp_tstamp_if_wscale=1
    set ndd:tcp_max_buf=16777216
    set ndd:tcp_cwnd_max=8388608
    set ndd:tcp_xmit_hiwat=1048576
    set ndd:tcp_recv_hiwat=1048576
    ===========================

journaling is not an issue on these throughput numbers, since there is no disk involved in these tests. I am dumping /dev/zero into netcat to send and sending the traffic to /dev/null on the receiving end, so this is truly a measure of raw network throughput....

  • How to setup airport time capsule to get better performance?

I need to set up my wireless system with my new Airport time capsule 3T as primary base station to get better performance, and  If I have a cable modem  as primary device to get the signal (5MB) from the ISP then my network has one, Macbook pro, Macbook air, mac mini, 2 ipad's, 2 iphones, but neither of them is connected all time.
What is the best way to do that?
What wifi channel need choose to?

What is the best way to do that?
Use ethernet.. performance of wireless is never as good as ethernet.
What wifi channel need choose to?
There is no such thing as the best channel..
Leave everything auto.. and see if it gives you full download speed.
Use 5ghz.. and keep everything up close to the TC for the best wireless speed.
If you are far away it will drop back to 2.4ghz which is slower.
Once you reach the internet speed nothing is going to help it go faster so you are worrying about nothing.

  • Performa 6200CD - Lot Of Problem

I Have a Macintosh Performa 6200CD. i got it from my Neighbor . I Have installed a lot of os on it but all of them have a problem with this computer. I Need At Least Mac OS 8.1 for HFS+. I Have installed firstly Mac OS 8.5 but when i startup sometimes i got a black screen just before the load of extensions and i can see sometimes the extensions loading in red. Starting up with Extensions Off didn't work better. i have installed 8.6 but i got the same problem. 9.0 and 9.1 is very slow on that machine. I Finally decided to install 8.1. All Seems to work fine but somes week after the installation i gotted a tonality like chime (BEEEEEEEPPPPP...) when it come to the time of loading extensions and the computer hang up here. i have tried to startup with Extensions Off but with no luck. i still can boot from a floppy or CD-Rom. I Really Need this mac because it is my only mac with A/V and i use it as a Media System with my 1500Watt Speaker.
If the computer is dead, Can i put the TV Tuner and the AV Card on another of these Mac :
    Performa 575
    PowerMac 6100/60
    PowerMac 7100/66
    Macintosh IIci
    Macintosh IIsi
    Macintosh LC III
    PowerMacintosh G3 Beige
But i would prefer to fix the mac.
Did this Mac is died? if not, How Can I Fix It Please!
Thank you all for your help.

Do you know how much memory is installed in the 6200? For best operation, you should have a pair of 32 MB SIMMs installed, for a total of 64 MBs. As for the error beeps, did you see a folder named "5xxx/6xxx Tester" in the installer CD's "Utilities" folder? Beginning with OS 7.6 and continuing through OS 9, it was included on every Mac OS retail installer CD, and was a prerequisite for installing the OS software on those models for which the "5xxx/6xxx Tester" was created. The "Tester" checks for known hardware issues that affected a small number of those Performas, which caused random system freezes. Some of the computers had a bad 603 CPU, but the larger number of those computers that were flagged by the Tester had a bad L2 cache/ROM DIMM card. For a period of 7 years, Apple fixed faulty units as part of a Repair Extension Program, but it expired in 2002. Here's the download page for the Tester, in case you're unable to find it on the installer CD. Run the Tester, so that you can determine if your 6200 is free of any problems.
Has the internal 4.5-volt alkaline battery been replaced recently? If not, I'd suggest doing so, because a very weak or dead battery can cause a number of startup problems.
As for the "sound" made when starting up in OS 8.1, the 6200 had a quirk related to the volume control setting and whether it was set to an "even" number at shutdown. A workaround was to create an AppleScript that would set the volume to an odd number at shutdown, so that you would not hear that "car horn" sound, the next time that you turned ON the computer.
As for the TV Tuner card, none of the models that you've listed is compatible with that part, because they have different form factors.

  • Initial TC Backup via Ethernet hardwire?

I have set up a wireless network with TC and my two imacs. Now, I would like to perform my initial backup to TC via ethernet hardwire vice wireless. What is the best/easiest way to go about this? Do I have to reconfigure my TC for an ethernet hardwire connection, backup and then reconfigure the TC for wireless -or- Can I simply just turn off the airport, connect the TC via ethernet and perform the backup?
    Thank You.

Yes, you can just turn off your AirPort and connect directly for the initial backup and switch over to wireless later. You cannot do this with an external USB HDD as the format saved via a NAS (Time Capsule) utilizes a sparsebundle vs. a folder format when connected directly.

Some benchmark results before racing with The Crew.
CPU and GPU info on CPU-Z and GPU-Z applications:
    3DMark Fire Strike score: 6441
3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score: 3384
    3DMark Fire Strike Ultra score:1262
The excel performance proof the brand new 960 graphics card comes with good a high Cost/Performance Value.
Now, check out this test benchmark score of the renowned game “The Crew”.
The game presents an ultra-quality display, 60 Frames Per Second (FPS)
    FPS: Average frames is at:
    Frames: 3859 - Time: 76828ms - Avg: 50.229 - Min: 43 - Max: 56
The comments of the game for your reference:
There are many types of missions that can be chosen from the America’s map.
Street racing, high-speed collision, breakaway from police, sky jumps, zigzagging, etc… make the game quite dynamic.
Now, when it comes to multi-player matches, the performance has exceeded expectations. Perhaps, it is the killer Ethernet that’s working the magic. Thus, this game is highly recommended if you have the right rig.
The downside is that the display intricacy is not as refined as GTA V and in addition, the game FPS is limited at 60 FPS. However, the overall gaming flow and performance is better than good.
The user's comment for using MSI Gaming 5 motherboard and 960 graphics card:
(The following commends are translated from user’s article, does not represent the viewpoint of MSI) ^^
Recently, MSI GTX 960 just launched so the initial price tag is still adjustable.
According to the current product line, it seems like this GPU is going to replace 750Ti. So once all the stocks (750Ti) at the store empties, we are most likely to see a price drop on GTX960.
Once the price hits the sweet spot, it’s time to try out GTX960 SLI’s performance.
The CP value on MSI GTX960 and GAMING 5 MB is pretty high. But the XSplit software that comes with the product is a bit annoying since the authentication steps are divided into 2 parts to go through for using it.
    Enough said, anyways, GAME ON!

NVIDIA 960 card  + GAMING 5 motherboard = best bundle for budget gaming!
it would be nice to see more testing of hardware-demanding games!

  • What is the best hardware for Home Sharing?

What is the best client machine for Home Sharing on my stereo? aka What do I want for Christmas.
Well the CD player is starting to breakdown; that makes two this century. Might be time to replace that whole 5 disk CD player thing and get something to use as a player for  music in the living room stereo. Maybe a second unit in the office as well.
How to decide what to buy? Am I selecting the right media server option? I am pretty sure I have a server option but how should I set this all up.
Ethernet. The stereo in the living room doesn't have ethernet cable run to it so the Time Capsule could stream over airport Home Sharing from my iMac 2.4GHz or MacMini server to say my lightly used iPad 32gig. This must slow the network down so I could run ethernet cable if I had to, but the iPad doesn't take ethernet. Performance of the network is important.
Power on feature. Ideally the hardware should emulate the existing service. I go to the stereo, turn the power on and it starts playing, usually ramdom songs (shuffle) of a preselected playlist (5 cds).
Remote control. We don't really use this, although changing playlists with my iPhone makes sense. I could hide all the gear in an out of the way closet. Remote control would be a nice feature, and remote control from all devices in the network and over one or two devices. Can I power up/down the stereo, adjust the volume down or pause remotely? This is my most used functionality.
Server or Client. I could put something with the stereo and load the music on it. Share from it instead of share to it. My music library is currently at 20 gig, so a 32 gig device would work. A old PowerBook as well with any respectable hard drive. Or do I use the TimeCapsule or my low use MacMini server as a media server? What do I do if I want a second player in the Office?
Sound quality. Yeah, it has to be there, audiophile wise.
    Audio Sources.
Play a single CD. This is where is gets a little complicated for gear. I do like the option of listening to a cd prior to burning it to iTunes. This starts to require a CD player connected to a iOS device, which is not yet availanble, so drives the gear selection into an older PowerBook. or maybe just add a single disk CD player to a iOS device and let the amplifier select the source.
FM. It would be nice if the device would get FM so I could toss the tuner as well.
Display. My existing CD player permits display of the disk and track, which kinda *****. I would like to know the artist, song and album, so remote control comes back into play here.
Cost. A replacement 5 disk CD player costs about $30 at the local thrift store. New around $200 - $300. I'm getting refurbished iPod 8gb touchs gen4 for $100. I see ebay has iPad 16 gig for around $200. Set the budget around $250. Maybe more christmas is coming   : )/
Brand. Been thinking Apple as iTunes sharing is easy, but would consider another brand if the price and quality supported the idea.
Shortlist. Old PowerBook, an iOS device as  client players or a stand alone player with out sharing to it but from it. Haven't looked close to see if they meet the functionality of an old CD player.
Workflow. How can we add CD music to the server from any client on the network? How do I change playlists? From the remote control? Can I operate the player from the stereo?
On Hand Gear. My network is running a pair of iMac 24's, iPad gen2, iPhone 3GS 32Gb, iPod gen4 8 Gb, Time Capsule (500Gb), MacMini Server (w/2 500 Gb drives in a RAID 1 config) with SLS. I have several PowerBooks: 17" G4, 14" G3; I could sell or use, USB external CD rw.
Any recommendations would be appreciated, I have some time before the CD player tanks and Christmas list sent to Santa.

What does itunes do on a G4?
Will itunes work under 10.4 with iTune 9 on a G3?
So back to the G4 1.67 GHz running 10.5.8 with iTunes 10. Adding Home Sharing  to this computer required deauthorising one of the other 5 authorised computers. Also I noticed I must be logged into a user in order for Home Sharing to see the other library... Or atleast that user has to have iTunes running. I logged into my test user account and opened iTunes account as user Tech, found the library on the TC (why doesn't iTunes remember this ?, maybe it has to bee conected to the TC) , shabam the library shows up on the PowerBook G4. Started playing the Tragically Hip , logged out and expected the library to stop sharing but no, I was still able to play from the logged out accout, as long as iTunes was running. Sure enough as soon as I logged back in to that user account and quit iTunes running fron the TC library, the sharing stop. No warning of a connected user though!
So what about Home Sharing on a Pismo? I fired up the old guy PowerBook bronze keyboard G3 400 MHz, 512 mb ram, running 10.4.11 and iTunes what? iTunes 4, oh yeah, from the iLife 05 install. I need to update to iTunes 9 but before that I should try to see if it can play from the TC. Well no it can't . I can see the TC and load the library but no songs show up in iTunes 4. Must be incompatible file format. I can't see any shared libraries either.
So I download iTunes 9.2.1 from Apple. Thanks for supporting older machines.  hmmm. installer says iTunes 9.2.1 requires a G4, yet it lets me install into the G3... let's wait for the install to complete and see what is up wit dat... well it installed... but will it run? no, iTunes installs, but it won't run on a G3, it wants a G4 or better.
So the story goes that for Home Sharing we stop at G4, G3 not invited to the party. Good thing the Pismo just sold on eBay.
The discussion on Home Entertainment Network over at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15843219#15843219 brings up another thing to test.
Can I stream the same music to multiple locations? Can I play the same music in the office and the living room? How does Apple handle this?
My other thought here is, since the TC has a back up of my music why can't I just play that version. Why do I need to back up my music? Guess I could not back up the Music folder in TC but store the music in the TC.

  • IPhone 5S Blue Screen of Death: seemingly no options left, any ideas?

Purchased my iPhone 5S in Nov 2013, haven't had any problems until mid-December. Made the jump from iOS 7.? to iOS 8.1.2. Afterwards, I started noticing that when I would plug the phone into any cable that it wouldn't sense a charge, would need to remove and re-seat. Phone started thinking Apple cables were uncertified, things like that. No big deal, I would just unplug and re-plug a few times until it recognized the cable was legit. Note: I own several Apple and Apple-certified cables, it didn't matter which cable I used, this issue persisted across all of them.
Forward a few weeks after the update, I wake up one morning and start using my phone and it freezes. Few seconds later, the screen goes blue, several striped lines dissolve in an out between blue/gold/black/silver/white. Press home+sleep button and restart the phone, normal boot for a few seconds until it kernel panics again. Repeat about 5 times until the phone actually starts. I have my MacBook Pro, plug it in, make several attempts to backup until it works (with several kernel panics in between). Restore iPhone from backup. Issue persists. Assume backup is corrupt. Restore phone to factory settings (sacrificing all data, but I just want a working phone at this point). Issue persists. Holidays over, get back to my home.
Make appointment at Apple Store, tech takes a look at it. Notes no physical damage, no water damage. Pulls up diagnostics, everything looks good. Finds dozens of kernel panics logged, blames hardware based on the diagnostics. Tech notes that my phone is "2 months" (more like 5 weeks) out of warranty, no AppleCare, tells me they can't do a warranty replacement. Phone needs to be replaced, offers $269 for a replacement 5S. Mention the phone was working fine before the update. Tech says that sometimes the updates will cause a phone with failing hardware to finally fail (paraphrasing). Can't afford the $269, ask about upgrade eligibility. Tech passes me off to a salesperson who says I'm not eligible until November. Could sign up for AT&T Next, which as I understand splits the cost of a new phone over a year (additional ~$50/mo for a new phone?). Getting married at the end of the year, so money is tight.
Take phone to work yesterday, delete all of my apps from my phone. Plug phone into computer at work (never synced to this machine). Tell machine to do a factory reset, assume that it will be the "cleanest" sync since the app data isn't on this machine. Phone works great... for 18 hours. Wake up this morning, load up Find Friends, freezes and BSODs.
So, looking for any options outside of having to pay $269 for a new phone. Soapbox... Owned Apple stuff all my life: Apple IIe, Mac 2C, Performa 575, PowerMac 6500, iMac, iMac DV, G4, MacBook Pro (LED), MacBook Pro (retina), gen-1 iPod, iPod classic, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 5S. I've given the company a lot of money over my life. Rarely have I turned to them for repairs and this is the first time they've spurned me weeks outside of warranty coverage. Considering this entire thing started with an update they pushed to my phone, I'm pretty disappointed with them right now.
tl;dr iPhone 5S kernel panics and blue-screens frequently (~dozen times a day) after iOS 8.1.2 update. Few weeks out of warranty, so Apple store told me I can pay them $269 for a refurb, otherwise not helpful. Not eligible for upgrade until November. No physical damage (water or otherwise). Tried to restore from backup, issues persisted. Deleted all of my apps, tried factory restore, issues persist. Any further options?

UPDATE (13-Jan 2015): Took my phone do a different AppleStore and had an appointment with a Genius. The Genius hinted that I should call AppleCare (1-800-APL-CARE) and tell them my story. He said that it was not possible for him to do it, but that by escalating the problem to AppleCare that they may help. I was on the phone with a rep and his supervisor for about an hour before they told the Genius to replace my phone as a one-time out-of-warranty replacement. They stated that because the phone was working fine before the update, and showed no damage, that they would grant my request. Yay Apple for making this right!
This is a known bug, error 101 or something.  Only solution they have at the moment is warranty replacement.

  • Need help opening oooooooooold clarisworks files

Im helping an elderly man open his diseased wife's files that were in Clarisworks (2)? He has an old Performa 575 (yeah--I know...). I have a older version I went to install but the 3rd floppy gives me a read/write data error. I cant complete the install.
What Performa 575 app will open old CW's files? I tried installing Appleworks and no-go. This is pre PPC times here...
Does Apple have a d/l for old Clarisworks 2?
Thanks. This would make an old man's day to see his wife's old teaching files...

    Steve Woron wrote:
Appleworks does NOT work or even install in a Non-PPC Mac.
Considering Steve's original post, I suspect he's referring to Pre-PPC Macs rather than the Post-PPC (intel) Macs.
The Performa 575/LC 575 used the 68LC040 processor, the last of the 68000 series. The PPC Performas had 4 digit model numbers.
Considering the dates of manufacture of the 575 (1994-1996), the bundled software likely included ClarisWorks 2 or CW3. I know that we had AppleWorks 5 on the ones that were still around in 2004.
Claris change the file formats between versions 2 and 3 or between 3 and 4, and a separate free translator app was available at that time to allow moving files between versions (in either direction).

  • Slow wireless connection 802.11n AEBS and Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

I have three Macs all currently connected wirelessly to the new 802.11n AEBS.
    Mac #1 - PowerMac G5
Mac #2 - 17" MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo
Mac #3 - 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo
The wireless connection speed (when using the web browser) is fine for both Mac #1 and Mac #2 but noticable slower for Mac #3. All three Macs are sitting right next to each other. All three Mac are getting an excellent signal. All three Macs are running the same version of the OS. All three Macs have identical network setting (as far as I can tell).
When connecting Mac #3 to the AEBS via an ethernet cable, performance is good. I've also tried configuring the channel manually in the AEBS to channel #1 but this did not help (seemed to help others in a different thread). Additionally, I ran the 802.11n enabler and performance was bad both before and after its installation.
Any idea why the Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro would be performing differently?

Ok eveyone. I did some digging and was able to get the network speed back with my Core2Duo machine. I put the Airport Extreme into Bridged mode and connected the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port. After that everything works great. for more information check out this lengthy thread...

Apparently the new base stations have a few issues that need to be worked out so I'd consider this a workaround. There should be no reason to have to do this. Good luck.

  • Cisco NAM - Capabilities

    Hello All,
I'm looking for features of NAM 3.0 which may help on daily operational basis, below are few questions regarding the same:
    1. Can NAM give real time data showing which IP addresses are connected to a particular server?
    2. Can it provide details of which protocol is abruptly disconnecting between two end-points?
    3. If I deploy Cisco NAM at my data centre in HQ, how would it help me monitor my traffic at remote sites, or does it help at all in this regards?
    4. Can it differentiate between traffic coming from load balancers, WAN optimizers, SSL devices, etc apart from regular endpoints like servers, desktops?
    5. I'm guessing it already does, but just wanted to know if NAM gives complete details of all ports active on a server and which protocols, clients connected to it?
    6. Does it show real time traffic between two endpoints like two hosts on different remote sites?
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Adnan

NAM, NAM1, NAM2, NAM SoftAppliance, NAM WAAS Blade or NAM Appliances are hardware denominators. Each new hardware release brings new chipsets, designs and hardware capabilities to NAM.
But majorly, all features depends on the software version you are using, either NAM Software 4.x or 5.x.
As an example, it is like using a Windows Software on a old single processor or a new Quad-core processor, features may remain same. However, some of the selective features does depend on Hardware as well, but mostly the robust hardware adds performence.
The latest NAM3 has following architecture:
•Two high-performance CPUs with hardware-based packet acceleration offering greater than 10 Gigabit Ethernet monitoring performance, 24 GB RAM, 600 GB SATA hard disk drive, mini SAS, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet external storage interface, and 1 Gigabit Ethernet management interface
    • 20 gigabit interface to backplane for Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN)/VLAN access control list (VACL) capture data sources, NetFlow, encapsulated remote SPAN (ERSPAN), Cisco WAAS, and Cisco Performance Agent (PA) data sources

  • Best external RAID option for MacBook Pro

I have been searching for an external RAID enclosure/solution to use with my MacBook Pro (with Thunderbolt). I would like to use Thunderbolt, but if Firewire 800 provides a more reliable solution than any of the Thunderbolt solutions I will go with the more stable options.
I have looked at a variety of options, and it appears the following are the top runners for a solution, any thoughts on any of these options:
Get a Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt array
The reliability of this unit really worries me, and if it failed as frequently as some are indicating, it could be busy nearly all the time recovering if I had 6+GB of content on the thing when it failed
Advantage of this unit is I could get enough capacity in one chassis to hold me for a fair length of time
The big disadvantage, if this thing fails as frequently as some indicate, restoring 6+GB of content to the thing does not sound fun
Get one of the Thunderbolt, OS X Software RAID boxes, (the likes of G-Tech, and Western Digital)
The use of the OS to manage the RAID array worries me, how is performance, how easy is it to replace a faulty drive and have the OS detect the new drive and start the rebuild process?
How long will it take to rebuilt a failed disc in the 2 to 3TB range?
Use the Firewire 800 port on a CalDigit VR 2 two drive RAID 1 mirror set
This seems to have fairly decent reviews, although there is not a lot of end user reviews that I have found
It will take at least three of the largest unit CalDigit makes to handle my images and have room for new images
Clearly Firewise will not be as fast as the Thunderbird devices
Get the CalDigit VR 2 but try to use the USB3 connection
CalDigit has a USB 3 card that can fit in the 17" MacBook Pro, but I have no idea how well the USB 3 card works with the MacBook Pro?
USB 3 does not daisy chain, the CalDigit card has two ports, however, if you have more than two external arrays you are still in a mood of swapping external drives
Drobo is coming out with Thunderbolt solutions
The bare box is pricey, add four or five large drives and there is some serious money in the thing
There are lot's of reports of failures and inability to rebuild, etc., on the Drobo
    The OWC Quad interface QX2
A fair number of reports of failures on this device
Little information on rebuild speed in event a drive needs to be replaced
I am not very interested in a NAS, even with GigaBit Ethernet the performance will not be as good as direct attached
I do have a 3 year old Mac Pro that is under utilized, I could add more storage and even a RAID controller card for an external enclosures, but again, trying to edit images and/or videos across the network may not be a viable option
Any other ideas, something KNOWN to be good, with minimal failures, and when it does fail it rebuilds quickly and safely
The last piece of the solution is ideally a solution that is fairly low noise.
Any suggestions, direct end user experience, etc., would be greatly appreciated

    What a list
    Well, take a look at CalDigit's HDPro2 8TB (supporting RAID 5 and 6)
    http://www.CalDigit.com/store.asp#HDPro2
It's more expensive than others but works with your MacPro thorugh PCIe connection and very reliable comparing to others.
or a cheaper HDOne 8TB in RAID 5/6

  • THE MYSTERIOUS EMAILS FROM 1969

I have heard that iphone 4 users are having issues with email messages with no content that says they are received from 12/31/69..I get them as well AFTER I updated to IOS4 and I have a 3G!! so this little oddity is NOT and iphone4 exclusive bug. I believe it is an IOS4 bug. I also get a bunch of 12/31/00 senders. I wish I could post the photo of what I am getting but there seems to be no way for me to post to let you lovely folks at Apple know I AM NOT NUTS! I love you MAC but REALLY!? Are you hiring moles from MICROSOFT and are not aware? I love you because you have consistently worked properly since I first purchased my first computer waaaay back when! (performa 575) don't let me lose faith in you! I have discovered toggling on and off the USE SSL in the advanced settings menu takes them away, but they do return...eventually. hopefully this will help programmers figure out the glitch.

You are not nuts! I get the same 12/31/69 emails and the occasional one from '00. I get anywhere from one to twenty in one upload. Creeps me out.
