Ethernet over STM-1 (SDH)

We wish to extend our Ethernet connection from our POP to a remote site over a leased STM-1 circuit. A lot of suppliers had been suggesting different hardware like RAD RIC-155Ge (http://www.rad.com/10/Gigabit_Ethernet_over_STM_1_OC_3_NTU/2486/#), etc. We wish to know if Cisco has cost-effective low-end hardware that can do similar solution, as we prefer to standardised with our Cisco hardwares, if yes, kindly name the hardware, part number.

We are doing something very similiar with the 15310-MA. Its not the cheapest solution but it had the features and support that we wanted. The box comes in a SONET version and SDH version.
We are using it to transport 2 gige's over an oc48 wave in the US and internationally we use it to transport 1 gige over stm4 leased lines (a gige interface plus the 15310-MA was still cheaper than buying the stm-4 line card for the platform we use.)
Since you are doing SDH, the 15305 might work just as well and it should be more comparable in price to the RAD.

  • Ethernet over WDM and SDH

How do we manage ethernet circuits over WDM and SDH transmission network? What all OAM tools are available for managing and diasnosis of these circuits.

EoSDH is the term used for transporting ethernet frames over a SDH transmission network. If you can remember SDH, one way this can be achieved is using Virtual Concatanation. Here, n x VC12s are concatanated to get the required speed. ex: if n=5, the speed is 10Mbps.(VC12=2Mbps).(i.e Ethernet frames are put inside the VC12 container and transported.)The SDH equipment will give the customer a normal RJ45 Ethernet interface and in the back end, the no. of VC12s corresponding to the Ethernet speed is concataneted and transported over a STM-1/4/16/64. On the other side, the concatnated VC12s are identified and the Ethernet farmes inside the VC12s are mapped on to the Ethernet interface.
If you see the end to end circuit, you will see ethernet. so normal tools used for Ethernet troubleshooting can be used. SDH troubleshooting tools can be used to test the transport part. There may be tools which can troubleshoot moare than this.

  • Ethernet over Mains solution??

Hi All, at the moment my desktop PC is hardwired into the router but due to building work that needs to change, at least temporarily. So I’m thinking about Ethernet over Mains adaptors. While I’m doing it I would really like an adaptor by the TV. So I need three devices, one for the router, one for the TV and one for the desktop.
I know that these things don’t share surge adaptors and a few other things and I’m not quite sure about putting one on a standard extension lead, so I’m looking for adaptors with pass through mains.
If it makes a difference I already have a Devolo dLan 500 AVtriple+ on the way from Amazon that I ordered thinking it was a triple pack, not a single triple adaptor but £60+ I was expecting to get the solution for that not a single device. Also I don’t need them to be wireless and I only get 5mbps broadband and if I need a high volume transfer between devices, which is rare, I would be ok plugging into the router which is a home hub 2.
Having already messed up I am starting my research again but thought I would ask here in case somebody has already solved this or has any advice.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Thompson,
I have just set up a powerline network, using devolo devices.
So, basically you want to plug your router into a network device, so your internet connection can be shared remotely by your PC and your TV/Sky using ethernet cables? Devolo do three pack setups, in the following guises - the second option having powerline pass through connectors...
You could go for either this:
Devolo dLAN 500 Duo Network Kit
    or this (power pass through):
Devolo dLAN 500 Duo Plus Network Kit
I am only stating devolo as I have knowledge of them, and are a piece of cake to set up - literally plug in and away you go, you don't even have to bother with the software that comes with them to monitor the network if you don't want to, although it is worth it as it will auto detect the firmware on the devices and let you know if there are updates available.
Devolos support seems pretty good as well, I am currently in the middle of a very extensive email exchange with their support team in Germany because i emailed them purely enquiring why I couldn't see a device on an old laptop using their software. They have been very helpful so far.
Dare I say it I would stick with the 500mbps as devolo no longer produces the 200 versions, although are still available from various outlets.
You could buy another make, getting a two pack and a third single adaptor, but I don't think there will be much difference in price when all told. At least with the above packs they are all in one box.
For additional information, I don't find these drop off in terms of speed that much. I have a device plugged in upstairs which is connected to my router, then I have a 500Av Triple + Wireless downstairs, into which is linked a slingbox and my sky box, and a wii connected wirelessly. The transfer speed between the two devices shows 494mbs, so a drop off of 6mbs. I also have an older 200 Av in another room, which shows a transfer speed of around 178mbs.
    Hope the above helps.

  • Metro Ethernet over Docsis

    Hello Gurus,
I would like to know a bit more about this tecnologie (Metro Ethernet over Docsis).
I work for a cable companie and we would like to know the implicationd of implementing such a technologie.
If we go for a CPE based aproach we only have to configure a CPE like the Cisco 1805 in each costumer end-point?
Which configurations does the CMTS and backbone require?
What are the maximum speed we can offer with this technologie running on HFC?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Ethernet over coax question

I have a coax cable running from the front house to the back house and want to connect my router to the iMac back there that serves up music and movies etc to the rest of the house. It's currently connected via wifi, but there are dropouts etc.
I've been pointed to a few different devices that can run ethernet over coax, such as this one:
    http://www.netsys-direct.com/proddet...NH-310C&cat=27
there are a variety of them, and they all seem to say they have speeds in the 100mps to at the most 500 mps. My questions is this. How fast are current Airport and Ethernet speeds? I know they speak of Gigabit wireless, so does that mean 1000mps and up?
If I'm currently using wireless in this case, do you think switching to coax would slow things down a lot, or would it work ok?
    thanks!

    802.11g aka "wireless-g" has a maximum theoretical speed of 54 megabits/second.
802.11n "wireless-n", has a maximum theoretical speed of 300 megabits/second, but to attain that it requires near-perfect conditions. It's normal to observe less than half that in actual use.
These vary according to many environmental phenomena that influence radio propagation. Observed speeds tend to be considerably less. "Gigabit Ethernet" isn't so influenced, but may also be less than 1000 Mb/s due to other network factors.

  • Sample Configuration For Ethernet over MPLS.

I am looking for a sample configuration and scenario for the Ethernet over MPLS.I would appreciate if I get some explaination with it.How the LDP is configured for the directed sessions (as per Martini draft) and the auto discovery (as per kompella draft) with respect to Ethernet over MPLS.Cam anyone help me in this ?

Here's a sample EoMPLS configuration on the PE routers:
    R1:
    interface Loopback0
    ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255
    interface Ethernet0/0.10
    encapsulation dot1Q 10
! 10 = vcid must match the vcid configured on the other side
    mpls l2transport route 2.2.2.2 10
    R2:
    interface Loopback0
    ip address 2.2.2.2 255.255.255.255
    interface Ethernet0/0.10
    encapsulation dot1Q 10
    mpls l2transport route 1.1.1.1 10
The LDP directed session will be setup automatically by the router when the xconnect statement is configured.
Cisco IOS doesn't support the Kompella Draft.

  • Ethernet over Coax advice pls. HFC or uBR ?

    Hi Guys,
Am well out of my depth and was looking for some advice on providing ethernet over a customers existing coxial network. EoC.
The customer is a large holiday resort who provide via coxial cable, TV to each of their cabins.
The system that they have is a WISI Topline headend system with
    Following products:

    http://www.wisi.de/cgi-bin/online_katalog.pl?prod_id=772
I have attached some images of these products.
What i need is to provide wifi out to the cabins and am looking ofr a system that can either provide an ethernet connection or a residential router with wireless built in.
I have been looking at universial Broadband Routers -

    and
    HFC products

I understand i am not providing much information but this is not my area of knowledge.
    Thanks in advance.

Can you please provide some examples of such gateways that can carry this thoughput?
On the same sidenote: I tried to use a different Router at my office and replace the AE from Apple with an Asus rt-n56u that that been tested to provide massive throughput (one if not the fastest routers out there) but it's a mainstream products not a high end enterprise one. Moreover i would approach the same way for home if not for countless problems i encountered with this router (eg: router will not forward VPN properly).

  • Ethernet over hdmi?

does apple tv support ethernet over hdmi?

There is a reason.   The whole reason why Ethernet over HDMI exists is to make it possible to have one physical Ethernet connection provide the needed connectivity to several devices tthat have HDMI.   Ethernet over HDMI eliminates the need to have a local switch.

  • Loss of Packet with Ethernet Over SDH

    Hi all,
    I have a strange behaviour when I connect 2 giga optical interface of 2 cisco 7600 over an SDH link (7600 - ADM ----sdh----ADM - 7600).
I can observe loss of packet even with a simple ping with size 100B...but the misterious is that if I start different parallel sequence of the same ping (ex 10000 pckts)..after the 3rd all works fine (all the 3 ping have loss no more)!!!
Furthermore if I use fastethernet instead of gigibitethernet, all works fine.
    Any Idea?
Many thanks in advance for your support

Reseat the card it solves the problem. Ensure packets Drops but no CRCs or BIPs it means due to the hardware failure .

  • Gigabit Ethernet over SDH

    Hi all,
I am trying to get a new Gigabit Etherent link up from a service provider. We have 2 GSRs with 1000 Base SX Gbics connected to this providers (Nortel equipment) equipment. All our equipment has been tested, looped etc so I believe the problem lies with interoperability between our Gbics and the Nortel GE over SDH equipment.
Does anyone on this list have experience of GE over SDH(Sonet)? If so are there any issues I should be thinking of?
    Any direction/advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Eoin

Do you know the specific Nortel equipment is? Is it Optera ? Which model?
Do you know the specifc model number of the blade / interface?
Any additional information you can offer could help alot.
    Thanks

  • Ethernet over Firewire - possible?

Say you have a gigabit ethernet port on a gigabit network... is there some piece of hardware, router, anything which would let you get to the network via a firewire port?
I ask because I am working on a Powerbook with a broken ethernet port which needs access to a gigibit network. Since FW800 is comparable in speed and is capable of IP sharing, is there any way to use it to connect to a network?
    Thanks!
    Rey

Hi Rey, I have networked an iBook and a PC via Firewire so in my humble opinion I think it'd be possible, have a look here.
    http://developer.apple.com/devicedrivers/firewire/ipoverfirewire.html
"Customers can immediately enable IP over FireWire and then connect two or more Macintosh systems by FireWire for file sharing, Internet sharing, or the use of any other IP-based service".http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1845.html I'll have a bit more of a look around and get back to you.
    Cheers.
