Ethernet Patch Cable from One iMac to AirPort Extreme Please help!

Hi, I have an iMac on one side of my home office, and a cable modem connected to my AirPort Extreme. I just bought a 25 ft. patch cable to run and connect to the router for faster speeds, but it is not working. I tried connecting it to the AirPort and the modem, and I did not get a light on the AirPort extreme or on the modem (I have disabled the wireless functionality on the gateway so it is just a modem now). I noticed that the cable has metal on the sides of the plug. Does that mean anything? How can I connect this and get it working properly?
Please help me!

your post is a little confusing
your imac is on one side of your home, and both your cable modem and extreme are on the other side of the house?
temporarily move the imac to the same side and try a different cable, seems like a cable issue

You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.

  • Broken coax cable from circuit board to Airport Extreme

I picked up this 1.25Ghz-DP/1024MB/FW800 off the internet knowing that it did not come with either the Airport Extreme or the Bluetooth (1.1) module. No big deal, since I have an AE and would be looking for the BT Module. To my surprise, its "AE/Bluetooth-ready" status was compromised by the removal of the AE card using a pair of side cutters (or some other crude cutting tool), leaving a frizzy antenna cable running back down into the space between the chassis and the case. It would appear that the BT antenna is intact, for what it is worth.
I know there would be some challenges, but I am wondering if the part is available that includes the circuit board, the antenna, and the antenna coax leading from the circuit board back to the connector on the AE. Or maybe the part numbers?
I plan to use this for an older version Digidesign's Pro Tools, so I am going to remove the two four-port cards (one FW, one USB) and replace them with the PT Mix Core and Farm(s). I would prefer not to go with the USB dongle, since I know there can be flakiness with USB and PT. My alternative to taking the plunge with a soldering iron and some parts would be to get an AEBS nearby and connecting with ethernet.
The computer sees the card in System profiler, but without the antenna fully deployed, it fires blanks. Are the resources for the connector and cable that could be put together to paste it back in place or better yet, a place to get the complete unit to change it out. I guess I would be looking for the BT module, too as long as I am at it, but that is not a critical issue.
    Thanks---Dave Iverson

    Hi Dave,
Here is a third-party external extension antenna that might replace the existing stub:
    http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/antennas_boosters/whips.php
Installation in a G4 mini-tower is easy; you only need to remove a PCI slot cover on the back to run the cable outside the box. I have no personal experience with this; just something I found in searching after I read your post.
    Danny,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Looks like the above product should work for an iMac. Check the list of instructions on the page I linked to see if they list your computer. I suspect you have to take something apart to run the cable. Also check the iMac G5 forums to see if someone there has already figured it out for that model. The iMac G5 hardware is nothing like the G4 mini-towers that are the subject of this forum area, so your chances of getting the right answer for your specific computer are better in the other forum I linked.
If you are having trouble figuring out how to start your own thread (so many people do that I must ask), see this Apple info:

  • Copy and Modify from one internal table to another. Please help.

    Hi,
I have an internal table having a structure like below.
    Account Entity Category period1value pd2value
    10 A C 100 200.
    where account corresponds to 10
    entity A
    category C
    period1 value = 100
    period2 value = 200.
Now I need to populate it into another table having structure like
    Account Entity Category period Value
    10 A C 1 100
    10 A C 2 200.
If u see this carefully a new column, period is added in the database table and thus for each row there will be only 1value.
Instead of period1 value and period2 value being in the same row they will come in different rows. One row will be like the value for period1 and next for value like period2.

  • Connecting iMac to Airport Extreme using ethernet

OK, I feel like and idiot! Please help!
I bought an Airport Extreme so I could connect my iMac directly via ethernet and send a wireless signal out to an iBook and a Windows laptop. I connected the ethernet cable from the iMac to the Airport Extreme, but I cannot connect via ethernet. Also, no green light comes on when I connect the cable (in the LAN <...> port).
This seems like it should be so simple, but I can't find any help on this!

don't know if you are in the US or not but shared (IP/internet connection) doesn't seem to work unless you choose US in the settings as the country where you will use the base station.
i have spent the last 3 days pulling my hair out and trying to get my airport extreme to work with no luck. wizard, manual settings.. nothing worked. i could not get 'shared public IP address' to work.. no internet unless i used bridged mode and then only on the machine with the direct ethernet connection to the base station. yesterday i had given up and i went to the store and purchased a D-Link GigE wireless router (that i'm taking back today, unopened).
I decided to give it one more try to no avail... but just on a fluke i decided to switch the 'country to be used in' to US instead of Canada (where i live) and BOOM... went through the wizard amazingly everything worked fine!!! i couldn't believe my eyes.

  • Migrate from minimac (G4) to new iMac via airport extreme

I have a brand new iMac and I have the latest airport extreme.
I have my old miniMac and all are linked up through the Airport Extreme.
I want to transfer all of my old files from my G4 miniMac to my new iMac but the Migration Assistant says I have to use (buy) a firewire cable.
How do I transfer my files from my old computer (miniMac) to the new iMac via airport extreme?

sorry to say but its the firewire technique which Migration Asst. uses. It does not migrate over Ethernet.. its actually very simple...
you put your G4 into target disk mode. You put the iMac into migration asst., attach the cable and the migration (file copying) begins after you chose to proceed.
The reality is firewire is faster than most standard ethernet anyway... and wireless? it would take an extraordinary amount of time.

  • Stream from my iMac via airport express to my Harmann Kardon AVR360

I want to stream music from my iMac via airport express to my Harmann Kardon AVR360, but without success. I'm using a mini jack -> optical adapter. Any recommendations on how to make this work?

The issue may be the adapter or cable that you are using. Since both your AirPort Express and Harman Kardon support digital audio optical connections, the simplest connection between them would be to use a cable with a 3.5 mm minijack to TOSlink optical connector on one side and a TOSlink optical connector on the other side.
I also have had scenarios where I had the right cable/connector but either the cable or connector was faulty.

Is it possible to download iOS  5 from one iMac on two ipads and not get them totally wiped of apps and stuff. We have an iPad each and a communal email address and an iCloud address each. One iPad now is totally screwed up.

    Thank you for your reply.
I am somewhat new to iOS and OS having grown up with DOS and Windows. I am not familiar with IMAP and iCloud and I am not even sure which types of servers my various emails use.
The problem I would anticipate with iCloud is that (I assume) it would limit my access to data (including mail) on the iCloud to when I happen to be logged onto the internet. I also assume(?) that large files (photos etc.) would require some time to download whenever I wish to access them from whichever device I happen to be using (I hope I am wrong about this).
I have kept my devices to 500gb - 1TB for OS and 32gb - 128gb for iOS but since I have pretty slow WiFi (shared with DirecTV Whole Home and Netflix streaming) it is my impression that iCloud might be quite limited due to data transfer times.
Perhaps a factor would be that I have 2 DSL lines and my main DSL line is connected to two wireless routers (to also provide WiFi in a metal building that blocks WiFi and Cellular signals)
I may be totally wrong in my assumptions regarding iCloud. My mail is not so urgent that I need access to it instantly and I could wait until I had internet access or I can get it on my iPhone. My main concern with iCloud would be my data files (Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers etc.).
On the other hand, if I wanted to keep my 10,000 emails that would take up a lot of iCloud memory and I don't know how to measure how much storage it would take or how to move Hotmail or even iCloud mail to iCloud.
It may take me some time to figure this out.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

  • Would love help adding wired iMac to Airport Extreme.

Hello. I have found answers to many questions on this board, but I finally have to ask one myself.
I know that it is possible to have two macs (iMac and MacBook Pro) connect to the Airport Extreme, one wirelessly and one wired (via one of the LAN outputs). I currently have both connecting wirelessly. Everything works great, but since going wireless the functionality of my trading website has deteriorated. It’s not allowing me to connect to real time quotes and charts. They tell me I need a wired connection. Not sure I believe them because it did work for awhile, but…
So I want to set up my iMac to be wired. I’m reasonably sure of the first step - I need an ethernet cable to connect the iMac to one of the Airport Extreme’s LAN ports. I assume there is more to it than this, but I’m unsure of the next step. I expect that there might be some reconfiguring of the Airport Extreme, but maybe not. For the wired iMac, would I turn AirPort off and connect as I used to (via PPPoE) before going to a wireless connection?
I have the Airport Extreme connected to a Spreadstream 5100 DSL modem through AT&T.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I need an ethernet cable to connect the iMac to one of the Airport Extreme’s LAN ports. I assume there is more to it than this, but I’m unsure of the next step
    1) Connect an Ethernet cable from the iMac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Click the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the iMac's screen and select Turn AirPort Off
    3) Connect to the Internet

  • Trying to connect a second printer (this one wireless) through airport extreme.

I am such a dufus about anything related to setup!  Can I have two printers on my network, one connected by a cable and one wirelessly?  I just purchased a second printer for my home office so that I can access both printers from my MacBook Air.  The second printer is a Brother wireless one, and am trying to do the setup but can't figure out how.  I got to the step about the printer needing to "detect which mode - WiFi Protected Setup Mode or AOSS - your access oint/router uses...I pushed the little wireless setup button at the back of airport extreme, but keep getting an error message that says the printer "cannot detect a WLAN access point/router that has WPS or AOSS enabled."

Hello Gee Money. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Chances are pretty good that the signal from the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) down to the MacBook may not be sufficient three floors down.
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook near the AEBSn, note the readings, and then, choose the locations where you will typically use your MacBook to access the Internet ... especially the location three floors below.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the base station or the wireless clients until they are within a 20dB SNR range.
