Ethernet port trouble

hi there
I have recently upgraded my ibook 500 MHZ to OS 10.2.8 i now want plug in to a cable modem using the ethernet port. However I don't seem to be able to make the connection, infact i think the ethernet port has become faulty, It displays in the system profile ok, but won't see printers or the cable modem. Is there any test i can do the check if the port is functioning?
thanks

Look in your
Applications > Utilities
folder for "Network Utility" It will show you the state of the networkable ports, tell how many packets have come and gone, and allow you to "Ping" the IP address of the broadband modem or the router beyond it (the IP address provided by your ISP).
How you set up the
System Preferences > Network > (your Ethernet port)
depends entirely on your ISP. They may give you a manual address, ask you to use DHCP, or require you to use PPPoE.
If you are trying to see an Apple LaserWriter, you may need to be sure AppleTalk is turned on for the active network interface.
The physical Ethernet ports on really early iBooks were pretty flimsy, but by the time the dual USB 500 came out, they should have improved significantly.

  • Ethernet port troubles

    Hi folks.
I've recently bought a refurb Mac Mini to supplement my iBook. Everything's fine and I'm fully up-to-date, except that the Ethernet port seems to be dodgy. The Mac Mini loses connection with my cable modem regularly, though it will recover connection if I remove and reconnect the cable or generally waggle it around.
I can't believe this is a problem with the cable, as I have used it without any problems on two other computers. I was just wondering if anyone's heard of problems like this before with the Mac Mini and if there might be any precedent for hardware faults of this nature?
    Thanks.

I'm also having trouble with my mini on the ethernet. The problem that I'm seeing is that it seems to be doing very strange things with its Ethernet MAC address -- Everything on the mini seees the MAC address as 00:0d:93:7b:cf:a6, but it shows up in the router DHCP client tables as that and some invalid value that changes each time I reboot the mini. The DHCP service on the router is dutifully providing an IP address to both the real MAC address and the wierd one, but the mini only responds to connections at the IP address assigned to the weird one. The current weird IP address displays on the router (A D-Link DI-524 running the latest firmware available) DHCP clinet list as "6D696E69", which is not 6 octets (the real MAC address display as "00-0d-93-7b-cf-a6" in the same list). Previously (before the most recent reboot), the weird address was showing up as "6D697373696E6D", which is also not 3 octets -- it's 7 octets.
I saw similar behavior with a LinkSys RT31P2 router, though it never showed me the odd formatting, it just showed somewhat random MAC addresses. I thought it was a problem with that router, so I put the D-Link in its place, and now I'm seeing what I've described. With the Linksys, I'd have to reboot the router any time I rebooted the mini, otherwise I could not connect to the internet through the router.
I've been having this problem with my wired LAN since I got the mini, but I was blaming the router. Now I'm pretty well convinced that there's something amiss with the mini's ethernet port.

  • Sharing wifi to ethernet port troubles

I am trying to share my wireless internet connection (from a public wifi spot) to my ethernet connection on my mac. I get the wireless connection just fine on my iMac and connect to the internet directly from there, so I know that's working.
I have turned on the internet sharing option in the control panel and told it to share from the airport card to the ethernet port. However, when I plug a device (like my linksys router) into the the ethernet port and try to connect to the internet via that route it doesn't work. There is no connection it seems.
What have I done wrong? Is there some setting I am missing?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problems with this too. Try changing your existing network to something other than 192.168.2.x (such as 192.168.1.x, or 0.x, or 3.x, or 10.x.x.x). Turns out that Tiger hard codes the 192.168.2.x network number for creating the new network, and it conflicts with the existing, to be shared network. Figured this out while searching for how to manually envoke natd, and am still annoyed that there was not even a warning about this.

  • How to add Ethernet ports to an Airport Extreme Base Station?

I have successfully connected an HP Office Jet 6310 to the Airport Extreme Base Station, after downloading the latest software from HP. It is printing wirelessly, and it is great so far.
The only problem is that the cable modem connected to ADSL has only one Ethernet port, and the Airport Extreme Base Station also has one Ethernet port. However, I need one more port to connect a phone (Vonage Telephone Adapter = VTA).
What is the easiest way to achieve this? I saw several other messages discussing hubs and routers, but the answer is not clear yet. If I purchase an additional router, should it be connected between the cable modem and the Airport Extreme Base Station, or the other way round?
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your time.
MacBook Pro with 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

One final vital piece of information, which should be my conclusion on this topic.
Following the advice received, I purchased a Switch from Linksys. Since the device didn't work for my purpose (dividing the Ethernet connexion into an Ethernet line for the HP printer and the Vonage phone), I called the Linksys support.
I was told that what I needed was not a switch, but a router. I thus had to get reimbursed for the switch and hunt for the proper router.
Finally, today, I have been able to find the item corresponding to my needs:
    A Belkin Wireless G Router F5D7230-4
It costs less than 50 US$ and has all the necessary Ethernet ports. The setup is very simple, and I got it operational within a couple of minutes, despite some small problems getting the setup Wizard to work. It is Mac OS X compatible.
Thus, at the end, I have got the HP 6310 Office printer and the Vonage VTA phone working together, with a robust Wireless network including WPA security. I would recommend this type of setting.
The only trouble is that the AirMac Extreme Base Station has become completely useless! I will perhaps keep it as a souvenir, or as a decoration in the living room... This wouldn't have happened if the creators of this nice object, which is extremely expensive for what it provides, would have thought of including at least two Ethernet ports!
The unexpected reply to my query could thus be ironically formulated by saying: "replace the Airport Extreme Base Station with a cheaper an more efficient device." Sorry for that!
With my best regards to those who took the trouble to read this thread to the end.
    Yours, Hotaru

  • Ethernet port loose - Need replacement!?

My ethernet port has been giving me SO much trouble. I had the entire logic board replace about a month ago and just yesterady the port is not working again. I unplugged my ethernet cable and inserted it again to find that it is LOOSE and will not plug in again. My macbook isn't assigning an IP address either - which tells me that none of the ethernet's internet connection is going through. On top of that, i KNOW THAT the ethernet internet IS working because it works on my friend's computer.
What should I do? Do i need to send it in for repair AGAIN!>!>!???!!

Hi, Lauren.<IMG src="http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c55/rondaleroi/welcome.gif" to Apple Discussions.
The ethernet port is part of the logic board, and most likely not repairable without installing a new logic board. The best option may be to go wireless with an original AirPort card and wireless access point.
The original AirPort card is no longer sold by Apple, and is getting rare (and, therefore, expensive).
Sources with AirPort cards listed as in stock as of this posting:
    http://powerbookguy.com/
    http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=10061
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/apaicau.html
Because I had an AirPort card quit working for me, I do not recommend buying a used AirPort card.
Also, be forewarned that the newer, cheaper AirPort Extreme card will not work with a G3 iBook.

  • OSX 10.6.8 upgrade disactivated my ethernet port.

after having installed the latest upgrade of OS X 10.6.8, my ethernet port doesn't work anymore. I get the message "ethernet cable unplugged".
Does anybody have the same problem?

I have managed to get my wired connection working again. Read on for the gory details...
Couple of days ago I found the 2641278 thread you mention, and I also had no trouble with false MAC address until 10.6.8 update. Thankfully, none of my other three Intel Macs on the same LAN had the issue so I did not even notice it until I started looking into the issue after 10.6.8 update.
I do not think that ifconfig terminal command will be of use because en0 is not even available when the issue occurs under 10.6.8 (this is my speculation based on events I'll describe below).
I did finally got things working again on the afflicted iMac (27" i5 w/ built-in Broadcom 5764 network card), and here is how (the events described are spread over multiple days due to my time constraints):
I first removed the Ethernet device under Network preferences (as suggested by David earlier in the thread). But when I tired to re-add the interface it was not available! Btw, that's when I really got ticked off about David's post, but in the end it was what got me digging deeper and allowed me to ultimately solve my problem... for the time being :-) . So at this point I must thank David for his suggestion.
I tried rebooting, removing power... no dice, Network preferences panel still does not have the ethernet interface available for me to add. So I fire up the Terminal.app and that's when I observe that even ifconfing does not list en0 interafce!
Next I start up the System Profiler and there is nothing listed under the Ethernet Cards section! Wow... that's when I start looking through kernel.log for any clues and find the funny things going on with the MAC address along with the errors I posted about earlier in this thread. Further Googling points me to the above mentioned thread but nothing that would point to a solution (at this point I have already tried applying the 10.6.8 combo update without any success).
Since I have Windows XP installed under Boot Camp I start the iMac in Windows XP and wouldn't you know it, network works fine... I check the MAC address, still the fake one (00:10:18:00:00:00). As mentioned in 2641278 thread, this is a Broadcom MAC address. Next I download the Broadcom Management Application for Broadcom NetXtreme Server card and it tells me the same thing, fake MAC is what it sees on the card :-\
At this point I decide to reboot back to OS X, but on a hunch I choose to do it in Safe Mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455) by holding down a Shift key. Please note that I booted into Safe Mode right after being in Windows XP, I shutdown down the Windows XP (i.e. powered off the iMac) and when I powered it on I was holding down a Shift key.
Booting into Safe Mode took noticeably longer and you see a progress bar displayed on the screen as well (for a while it looked like nothing was going on, so be patient).
Once OS X is loaded I was presented with a login screen (when booting normally I have it automatically log me in, so that was different) and above the user selection window I could see Safe Mode.
Upon login I bring up Network preferences and even without me doing anything it notifies me that it has detected a new Ethernet! I acknowledge the dialog and interface is added. After a few moments the red dot changes to yellow while it is searching for DHCP server, and finally to green once it received the IP info from the DHCP server, awesome! I then change the interface config to my usual manual settings and also check the MAC address... it has a valid MAC address it used to have in the past!
I double check the kernel.log and find that errors I posted about before are gone as well.
I have since rebooted the iMac numerous times as well as completely shut it down and unplugged it from power without any issues. It has now been (only) two days since things got fixed so I hope issue is resolved.
    In summary
remove the Ethernet interface from Network preferences panel
    power off the Mac
boot the Mac into Safe Mode by holding down a Shift key on your keyboard
go to Network preference panel and let it re-add the Ethernet interface
(if necessary) re-apply your setting to the Ethernet interface
    enjoy connectivity :-)
I hope this helps other people as well. Also, I don't think me booting the Mac into Windows was relevant to the solution, but it is yet another potential variable.

  • My ethernet port dies

I have a MacPro 3,1 that after about 2-3 hours of work the ethernet port appears to die.  IE no data out.  I can see it trying but nothing gets out.
After a restart the ethernet port works fine.  Some event seems to knock it off line.
I had this problem earlier when I used Virrus Barrier X6 and was doing speedtests.  Those would kill the ethernet port.  I removed VB6 and the problem went away.  The Mac Pro ran fine for a number of months then just two days ago I bought two new displays.  Both are driven with DVI.  That is the ONLY change that has been made.
Now... for some reason the ethernet port drops off line after a few hours.  I've tried making it inactive and reactivating it with no luck.  It seems a restart is required.  I am running little snitch but it was running before the the displays as well and I never saw problems.
One thing I do notice is that my ATI Radeon HD 2600 seems to be using all of its RAM (menu meter utility shows the ram as fully in use).
Any ideas on how one can trouble shoot this?  I've been looking in the logs but I am not seeing any crash events that seem related.

    fotosonix wrote:
That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :
"Compatible only with MacBook Air Computers"... so I am not sure if I should open it.
When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

  • Wrt54g - no wired connection - cannot find ethernet port upon setup, cannot get wired connection

I've had my wrt54g router for a little over 1 year.  I had to get support to set up the router initially b/c it could not find the ethernet port when I tried to set it up initially.  I am past that date and recently had to move the router and the PC.  When I tried to redo the setup same issue - i upgraded the firmware and same issue.  If i uplug the router and plug the cable directly from the cable modem into my pc, everything works well, but when i try to set up a wireless connection, the wired connection goes down, but the wireless connection works and i cannot get the wired connection back up.  i am a novice with the device, so any detailed help in trouble shooting the problem and getting me back up on both a wired and wireless basis would be appreciated.

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30 seconds and configure the router from the scratch.Make sure that the Modem is connected to the router on the internet port and the computer to the router on the ethernet port.
Also check the ip address you are getting on the computer hardwired to the router...Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to open the setup page..

  • How do I add an airport extreme to a cable modem with only one ethernet port, while keeping that port connected to my Mac?

I have a mac pro connected by ethernet to a cable modem via ethernet.    There is only one ethernet port on the modem.
I want to keep the Mac connected via ethernet for speed.    Is there a way that I can add an airport extreme to this set up - for my ipad and roku, and for guests to use - or do I need to buy a router to put between the modem and the mac?
If I need a router, what kind?
    Thanks.

The modem connects to the WAN "O" port on an AirPort Extreme router.
The Mac Pro connects to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme router.
Or if you do not need the ability to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the router, you can save a bit by using an AirPort Express.
The modem connects to the WAN "O" port, the Mac Pro connects to the LAN <-> port
Either the AirPort Extreme router or AirPort Express router will allow up to 50 wireless device to connect.
There are many other wireless modems offered by other manufacturers as well.

  • I had a failure of a dsl modem which inturn destroyed my ethernet port of non isight imac G5.  In attempt to solve the problem I did a clean install of leopard 10.5.4. I am unable to upate to 10.6,.7  or .8 without freezing system network preferences

Dsl modem failure caused malfunction of ethernet port.  In attempt to solve problem I did a clean instillation of  Leopard 10.5.4 and then update to 10.5.5 with access to internet through apple usb to ethernet adapter.  If I attempt to update software to 10.5.6, .7 or .8 it freezes my network system preferences and computer will no longer shut down.  The network connection assistant also no longer sees a connection to the internet throught the usb/ethernet adapter.  I have checked they systerm Tech tool deluxe which shows no problems and also used hard drive utility on instillation disk which found no problems.  Permissions were also checked as well and no problems noted.  Any thoughts as I really like my imac G5.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Built-in ethernet port not working in unibody Mac Mini

    Hi,
So ever since I acquired this new mac mini I haven't been able to get it to recognize any devices connected via ethernet. I obviously checked the cables and all is good there. I tried connecting it to another mac, and while the other machine was detecting a device (the mac mini) at the other end of the cable, the mac mini kept saying that the cable is unplugged or the device off.
After several days of having the issue I decided to remove the ethernet service from the network preference pane to set it up again but to my surprise, the built-in ethernet option was not available (I only got airport, firewire, bluetooth DUN, VPN, PPPoE and 6 to 4). At this point I tried removing the networkinterfaces.plist file form the system configuration folder in the system preferences folder to no avail. I then tried to zap the PRAM, NVRAM, reset the SMU, SMC and all that kind of things to get the port recognized by the system but no luck.
When I look at the system profile I get these weird results in Ethernet Cards:
    pci14e4,4353:
    Type: Other Network Controller
    Bus: PCI
    Vendor ID: 0x14e4
    Device ID: 0x4353
    Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x106b
    Subsystem ID: 0x0093
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    Link Width: x1
    BSD name: en0
    Kext name: AppleAirPortBrcm43224.kext
    Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm 43224.kext
    Version: 425.16.2
Comparing it to other macs I have It should read "ethernet" rather than that strange pci name on top and the kext name shouldn't read airport but something like AppleIntel and in location it shouldn't direct to the IO80211Family.kext package but rather to the IONetworkingFamily.kext.
So I popped in the system install DVD and fired up System profiler and at that point I didn't even get an "ethernet cards" option in the left side pane. So this is leading me to believe that the hardware is not being recognized at all, so maybe it's damaged. I did replace the HDD with a bigger one and change the RAM modules to bigger ones but I don't think I could have damaged the hardware in these processes, also I don't see how this would affect the ethernet port as it's integrated to Motherboard and didn't messed with it at all (I was very careful, to say the least!).
The last thing to do is reinstalling the system but I don't think it'll help (after seeing that the ethernet port is not even being detected by the install OS) but I need to offload all the data from my internal disk and at the moment I don't have an spare drive to do it.
So, what's the recommendation? A field trip to an Apple Store? Closest one is like 3,000 km from where I am right now, so...
Well, thanks for any pointers, suggestions and help in general.

I do not have any answers for you. Yes it appears to be reading what should be an ethernet card as an AirPort card. Have you played around with trying to install another version of Mac OS X other than the version that shipped with the Mac mini? Apple has long told us that we should not install a version of Mac OS X that was older than the shipping version. With the Mid 2010 Mac mini, the Restore DVD has the only version of Snow Leopard that will work with this Mac mini's specific hardware. At least until Apple releases 10.6.5. If you have installed other versions of Mac OS X, then erasing the HDD and installing the OS from the Restore DVD(s) that shipped with the mini may get you back to the point you need to be.
Unfortunately I think that you voided your Apple Warranty when you installed the different HDD. That was always a question in the past when folks wanted to open the former version of Mac minis and upgrade the RAM. But with the 2009 models folks started reporting here in the Apple Discussions that Apple was informing them that they had voided their warranty by opening their Mac mini. This new model made the RAM user upgradable, but the User Manual specifically states on page 43, 54 and 61 that there are no user serviceable parts in the Mid 2010 Mac mini except the memory.

  • Can I activate the ethernet ports (routing) of Time Capsule "joining" an existing non-Apple wireless network ?

    Hello,
I have a DSL modem that is also a WIFI router as my main WIFI network from room A. In room B, I have a TC wirelessly joining the existing WIFI network (not creating a new one). That works fine, I have one SSID, and I can wirelessly access the TC disks and backup my Mac on my TC.
Now, I would like to connect a wired device (with on WIFI) to the ethernet port of my TC. Unfortunately, the ethernet ports of the TC don't seem to be "activated" as they do not have internet on them.
More precisely, I'd like to connect a GE Cordless Skype Phone Model# 31591 (http://www.gephones.com/products/skype/dect-6-0-expandable-digital-cordless-phon e-with-skypetm.html) that connects to a router via Ethernet. I'm aware that I could simply connect it to the DLS router, but that's not what I want... Is there any way to activate the ethernet ports of the TC while in "join" mode ? Or do I really have to buy a Airport Express to create my main network and then extend it ?!?

Thanks, the reason why I asked again, is because you told me to start another thread with the specifics of the device I want to connect, so I did
Not a big deal, and it is easy to become confused.....but to be clear about this
    Your question.....
is there a way I can connect my Bluray player to the TC ?
    My Answer.....
Please start a new post for that. Tell us the make and model number of the player and whether you plan to connect using wireless or Ethernet.
so I tried to creat the main WIFI network with a first-generation Airport Express M9470LL/A (802.11b/g, no "draft N" or "n" support) and the TC wouldn't extend it either, is it too old/not supported
Unfortunately, the "extend" setup will only work with "n" devices.  The older Express does not have a setting to "Allow this network to be extended", so the Time Capsule cannot pick up the signal.
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than what I already have.  I'm assuming that you do not want to buy another new Airport Express.

  • Ethernet port on MacBook Pro only works under certain conditions

Since I've purchased my MacBook Pro over two years ago now with an initial installment of OSX 10.5.x, I've had a small annoyance if while the OS was up and running and my physical network interface was disconnected and reconnected, a connection could not be reestablished until I shutdown, restart or put my Mac to sleep and woke it back up with the cable connected to the ethernet port. It would randomly work as it should if I connected and disconnected it over and over again until the machine decided I've stimulated it enough to allow me to use it. But it's recently become a real annoyance for me since the tab on my longest ethernet cable broke and it no longer locks it in place and now the slightest budge displaces the cable and I have to put the laptop to sleep often to reestablish a connection.
I would opt to Wi-Fi, but my Mac (surprise, surprise) out of 4 other laptops is the only one whose signal is too weak to use where I use them most. I've reinstalled the OS once to no avail months ago and the problem persisted after downgrading to Slowleopard a day after it's release.
Anyone have any ideas what may be going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello DavidJoyce
Best thing to do is to buy a new Cat 6 Ethernet cable.

  • How can I configure one of the gateway NI9792 Ethernet port to communicate with a cRIO PAC ?

    Hi NI Engineers,
I intend to use my gateway NI9792 the following way:
    1. One Ethernet port for network connection. That's how I'll develop it, download software and monitor my application through my PC at my desk.
    2. Can the other port be used to communicate with a cRIO device? If so, how can I do it?
It seems to be a stupid question, but I truly could not work this out!
    Thanks in advance,
