Ethernet Setup Help
Hi,
I just received a new SubBlade 100 and am having trouble setting up the network. How do I reconfigure the DNS server and assigned IP address? How do I get back to the original network setup wizard?
Thanks,
David
How do I reconfigure
the DNS server and assigned IP address? For DNS: Copy /etc/nsswitch.dns to /etc/nsswitch.conf and
setup /etc/resolv.conf
See also: man nsswitch.conf , man resolv.conf
A fixed IP address for the system can be changed in
/etc/inet/hosts
How do I get
back to the original network setup wizard?Run sys-unconfig
The system resets it's configuration, reboots and on the
next boot interactively queries things like time zone,
ip-address, netmasks, name service to use, root password,

Hi
Firstly I cannot get my Linksys RE1000 to work with my network having tried the set up CD on 2 computers (mac and windows)
The main router is a BT Home Hub 2.0
any suggestions
Secondly this is what I am trying to achieve so help to do that would be great.....
The main router is in the basement where out internet connection enters the house, also in the basement is our LAN board where we have ethernet cables extending to parts of the house. There is weak wireless signal from groundfloor up to the top floor so wanted to find something where I could plug into the ethernet port and it would broadcast an wireless network to the upper floors/areas with a weaker signal. Thought the RE1000 would do this job but i can't get it to do it wirelessly let alone connect it to the main router using a ethernet cable
HELP Please. If you already have ethernet cable running throughout your house, then a wireless access point is probably your best solution........not the RE1000.
It took me a couple tries to get a RE1000 up and running. I'm pretty sure I didn't read or follow the directions. I remember having to reset it a couple times using the reset button on the back of the RE1000.
You'll need to have the RE1000 close to your main wireless router when you are setting it up.
But again, if you already have ethernet cable running to parts of your house, the RE1000 is not your best solution.

Site setup help...
Hi -
I am new to using CS5 and I am having a few different problems. I am not sure but I think they all stem from improper setup. I had used dreamweaver mx 2004 to set up a few sites back in 2004-5 so I am am somehwat familiar with setup, however, besides trying out CS5 on a new computer, I also now have a QNAP 459+ NAS which I am using as the remote server (as opposed to a site through go daddy or other).
I have PHP and mysql running on my NAS, and I have also installed Xampp on my computer. (first off I was not sure that I needed this because I have a server (NAS), but I decided to install so because I was pretty sure that my local machine needed apache running in order to parse php scripts before they run on the server) In XAMPP control panel, I get the following:
Where it says apache is started but up above it does not say that it is running. When I try to view PHP code in dreamweaver from the local site, it just shows the little PHP emblem and does not process the code. It does process php if I access the page from the server by typing the address in a browser. It does not process at all in dreamweaver.
I also get the following errors in dreamweaver which I am not sure but I think are related:
"dynamically-related files could not be resolved because your credentials don't allow file activity on the server"
and
"An unknown error occurredwhile discovering dynamically related files. Retry."
I am not sure if I have multiple problems or just one which is causing all these symptoms, but any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

Base station ethernet setup?
Hello: I just bought a used v.6 Airport Express base station. B & W basic Mac, OS X.3.9. There are no internal or external wireless cards in the Mac. The Mac connects normally to home networkI want to connect the Airport Express Base station, directly to my audio receiver (RCA jacks & apple/monster kit). I reset the base station. The plan is to have internet radio transmitted to the base station from a wireless router connected to the Mac. Do I need to configure anything on the Airport Express Base station? Problems:
If I directly connect the Airport Express Base Station to the Mac, (to configure the base station), I get
-flashing yellow light on base station
-The Airport Express Setup utility appears to begin the setup, but stops, error message: "an error occured, communication with base station."
-the base station does seems to have a MAC address and internal i.d. which does appear to be read, before the setup fails.
Thank you. What you want to do will work. The basic steps are as
follows:
- temporarily cable the ethernet port of the Airport
Express to a spare LAN port on your cabled network
- run the Airport Admin Utility on the Mac. Select
your Airport Express, click Configure. Under the
Airport tab, select the mode to "join an existing
wireless network". Specify the name (SSID) of that
wireless network, and select the same wireless
security protocol and password used by your existing
wireless network. Enable the speaker setting found
under the Music tab. Update settings to the Airport
Express
- you may then unplug the Airport Express from your
network and relocate the Airport Express next to your
sound system. You will know the Airport Express is
successfully configured, and connected to your
existing wireless network, if it shows a solid green
status light.
You cannot make use of the Airport Setup Assistant -
it only works with an Airport card equipped Mac.
Your question (how to configure an Airport Express as
a wireless client to a non-Apple wireless router) is
frequently asked here. A lot more advice and tips for
this project can therefore be found by reviewing past
discussion topics.
Thanks for reply, Henry. I'm finally able to work on this. What keywords for a search on similar setup do you suggest? "base station ethernet setup" is too broad, too many results not in line with what I want. I'll try "base station itunes stereo" too. Thanks. -
Setup & Help buttons stopped working
I recently upgraded wireless network from WEP to WPA. Lost wireless connectivity to 3310 All-in-One, and now Setup & Help buttons don't work so I can't connect to new network. What happened? Is there a way to setup new network without accessing Setup menu on device?
Get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page. Run the software, making sure there is no USB cable attached. Choose "Network" or "Wireless" connection type when it asks. Plug in a USB cable (temporarily) when it asks.

Subject: cs4 in design page setup help cm, mm, inches change
With no files open, edit your preferences and change units to inches.
That said, InDesign will convert units so if you type 11 in, even though the document uses picas, it will convert the inches to picas for you.

Setup through ethernet? HELP!
i have a HP LASERJET P2055DN; I have always had the printer setup to my desktop via USB cable, but the USB cable port has broken off the inside of the printer. I went to staples to figure out if theres any other way i could hook my computer and printer up without the USB and they suggested by ETHERNET cable.
As of right now, I have the ethernet cable connected from my printer to my router. When i go into a word document to print, it shows the printer as either connect and "ready", but when i hit print, nothing happens. OR it shows up in my printer list as "offline", and then i right click on it and click on "use printer online". and still nothing happens.
PLEASE HELP! all i want to do is be able to print!Hi @ashmcguinness1,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since the HP LaserJet P2055dn Printer is a commercial product. You can do this at http://ow.ly/C9YPY.
The support page for your product may be helpful in the meantime: http://ow.ly/C9YVC.

I have a net gear n300 router transmitting my WPA secured network, and I bought an airport express to use as a network extender. I configured it via an Ethernet cable from a MacBook using manual setup in airport utility. I got the green checkmark at the end, but it is not extending my signal. Can you help me?
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few non-AirPort routers that are known to work are:
Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
BT Voyager 2091
Netgear WGR614 v6
Buffalo WGR-G54 -
I'm pretty good with hardward, but admittedly, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to wireless networks. So I purchased an AirPort Extreme Base Station in 2010 and set it up to run my wireless network as well as a 5GHz version of the network as well. Unfortunately, my modem is on the opposite side of the house as most of my wireless devices, i.e. PlayStation 3, MacBook Pro, etc... I was noticing a weak signal, so I purcahsed an AirPort Express to extend the range of the existing network (not the 5GHz network, the regular one). This was perfect, everything was running great. Through my ISP I signed up for 10Mbps, I was getting high 9's in the room the modem was in, as well as accross the house on the extended network.
Fast forward two years later, Apple has released new Extreme and Express base stations, I'm not sure each update consisted of, and maybe the newer versions will work, so that's why I'm asking. I got the new AT&T LTE iPad and I'm getting 38Mbps on my LTE network, yes, you read that right, a whopping 38Mbps! Needless to say, I was preferring this over my home Wi-Fi Network, so I called up my ISP and requested 25Mbps, still slower, but at least I'm not eating up my data. The network is set-up exactly the same way, I didn't change it. Problem is, when I bring my iPad into the room with modem, I get 25Mbps, but when I'm back in my living area, on the extended network, I still only get 9 to 10Mbps Considering I'm rarely in the room with the modem, it's as of I'm paying extra money for no additional bandwidth, which makes me a sad panda... So, the question is, does my current Express not support 25Mbps or am I 'Doing it wrong.' If I need to pay the $99 for another Express, I'd be happy too, but considering I bought the Extreme and Express at the same time, and the Extreme handles the 25 fine, I'm thinking I have it set-up incorrectly. As I understand it, the only differences between Extreme and Express are that one is duel band, guest network is possible, more USB's and ethernet ports, etc...The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.
I have it set up as a roaming network.
A roaming network is one in which the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be connected using a wired Ethernet connection.
Your setup cannot be a roaming network if.....The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.
Can your clarify on your setup?
Do you think this is the best set up, or would you suggest doing it differently?
A roaming network, with a wired Ethernet connection between wireless routers would be the best way to set up virtually any network, since there is no signal loss in a wire.....and a great deal of signal loss (and speed) in a wireless connection.
I have an old Airport express A1088, can anything be done with it?!?!
The old Express could be configured to create a wireless network if it were wired back to the Time Capsule.
It could also "join" the wireless network wirelessly for use with AirTunes....but it would not extend the wireless signal, since it does not have that capability.
In order to administer the older Express, you would need a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC.
Sorry, cannot help on the Smart TV - Media Centre question since I don't have that type of setup. -
Airport Network setup help or suggestions :)
Hi - first post
I currently have a Billion wireless router - 7404VGOX
Airport 2 TB Time Capsule - 4th Generation
Airport Extreme - 5th Generation
1 x MacBook Air with Mavericks
1 x Windows Laptop
1 x iMac
1 x Airprint Epson Printer
1 x Airprint HP Printer (which I can not get to connect!!!! something about MAC Filtering)
iphone, ipads & smart TV's etc
The wireless router is in the office along with the Time Capsule (which does Time Machine back ups) which is bridged and connected by ethernet
The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.
I have it set up as a roaming network.
Do you think this is the best set up, or would you suggest doing it differently?
I have a Smart TV with hard drive connected and a Media Centre with an inbuilt 2TB SATA drive, which were connected to the Billion before getting the Airport things.. Is there a way that everyone in the house can access the files on the media centre?
I have an old Airport express A1088, can anything be done with it?!?!
THanks sooooo much!!!The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.

Advanced? Network Setup Help
Hi All,
I revisited my network problems (posted earlier) and everything is now working peachy.
My current setup:
cable modem -> airport extreme -> wireless computers
(wan) | ---> linksys router ---> VOIP
|--> Buffalo Linkstation
|--> wired computer
Ok. If I plugin to the linksys router I can see the Buffalo Linkstation (which is a shared NAS drive).
I can't however see the Buffalo via wireless. I am positive this is due to my configuration of the network - I DHCP (10.1.X.X) w/ the Airport Extreme and DHCP (192.168.X.X) with the Linksys. While technical, I don't mess with network configuration very often.
My question - what can I do to set it up so that the wireless computers can see computers / NAS drives on a plugged in router? The configuration is changeable btw (ie cable modem -> linksys -> airport extreme) if necessary.
Thanks for the help in advance!
Davidgnash, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your problem is caused because you have 2 routers in your network. Therefore the wired computers are on a different subnet than the wireless computers.
One solution is to replace the Linksys router with a simple Ethernet switch or hub.
Another solutions is to reconfigure the AEBS so that it does not distribute IP addresses and then connect your network like this:
modem->Linksys->[LAN] AEBS
In this configuration, the Linksys will provide IP addresses to both the wired and wireless clients. -
Lackluster Dual Network Setup - HELP!
Here's my setup:
DSL
I
I
AXBS (UFO) 2.4Ghz b/g --> PowerBook G4 (10.4.11); iPhone (Original)
I
I
Time Capsule 5Ghz n (Bridged) --> MacBook Pro (10.5.4); MacBook (10.4.11 - n enabled)
The Time Capsule's Strength and Range is suppose to far exceed that of the older Base Station. When I'm near the location of the two transmitters the 5Ghz n is barely twice as fast as the 2.4Ghz b/g (tested with large file transfers between the 2 newer laptops, and then file transfers between the MacBook Pro and the older Powerbook). When I'm farther away the 5Ghz n drops away and the 2.4Ghz b/g remains relatively strong. Switching between the two networks when I'm at a distance strangely still shows full solid bars for both networks.
So does anyone have any suggestions or further question that might help me improve the speed and range of the newer Time Capsule? ThanksJust to update everyone:
Today I moved my whole dual network setup to a more centrally located spot in the house. This has definitely improved the coverage of the 2 network bands (n & b/g).
Additionally, since I only recently acquired the TC, I originally just added ("bridged") it off of my existing b/g network. With todays move, I decided to switch the 2 base stations and have the TC and its' "n" network the first connection off of the DSL router. Then reconfigured the older ABS Extreme (UFO) to "bridge" off the the TC. While I am convinced that I did not originally have the 2 networks co-mingled (as early speed tests confirmed), I seem to be experiencing improved internet speeds in the 5Ghz ("n") network. Could this be due to no longer "bridging" the TC through the older ABS Extremes' internal Ethernet switch?
As per Tesserax suggestion, I then did a Signal-to-Noise ration (SNR) survey of the house, and came up with some good results based on the SNR Guidelines in Tesserax comments above.
35 to 45 SNR throughout most of the house. About 25 SNR just outside in the patio where I was barely getting a connection before. Things have definitely improved. And I am very pleased. Clearly network speed is the advantage of 802.11n technology.
Nevertheless, my original observation still seems to apply. Here's why: Detached from the house is the garage and an office. As I moved out toward the office during the SNR survey (about 50 ft. away), the strength of the 5Ghz ("n") network dramatically dropped off, and was eventually non-existent inside the office. Yet I could switch over to the 2.4Ghz ("b/g") network and easily browse the internet.
Apple's marketing claims "AirPort Extreme delivers data transfer speeds up to five times those of previous-generation 802.11g wireless networks — while achieving up to twice the range."
Now I fully accept, as Apples' footnote states, "Based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort- or AirPort Extreme-enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions." If "site conditions" are limiting the range of the 5Ghz band, why aren't those same site conditions limiting the 2.4Ghz band as well. While I don't realistically expect a full doubling of range between the 2 bands, couldn't I expect SOME? Otherwise the marketing claims are meaningless.
Can the disparity be explained by Tesserax' observation above, "we know the stricter the wireless security employed, the more overhead is "eating away" the overall bandwidth so we would expect poorer performance when using WPA2 vs. WEP." Now the TC only has WPA2 security available. Are we to assume that Apple's range claims do not apply to the TC then? If I switch my older ABS Extreme (UFO) from WEP to WPA2 will the result match Apple's marketing claims? I'd rather not chop off my good right leg just so it will match my missing left leg. Perhaps my expectations for 802.11n technology were a little too high. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with the results. And I am thankful for Tesserax advise. I also appreciate the fact that I am not (yet) experiencing the difficulties that others here are having with the Time Capsule.
Ultimately, I assume that picking up an Airport Express "n" will extend the 5Ghz network into the office. Is this correct? If anyone has observations on this or my thoughts above, feel free to share them with the rest of us. -
NETWORK setup-HELP please !
tried to access search & articles w/o success.
i have 2 G4s wired via ethernet to a d-link router that yes does have both G4s working as far as internet.........but i am very confused about what is 'Server - Network - File sharing ' etc.
when i first hooked this up i got G4 #1 to.......GO> connect to server >choose HD1 or HD2 (from G4 #2)
it was listed in 'mount to volume'.
now i have a weird problem, after [connect to sever] it simply WILL NOT connect thru my REGISTERED USER......only thru a [guest], and then it will only mount to 'somthing' i have named and offers DROP BOX only.
OK technically i can 'file share' (i think) by using this....BUT what i really need is for BOTH G4s to be able to connect or 'mount' to the HDs.
i have seen this work allready once on G4 #1 but #2 never did.
things that seem important.
-volume to mount
-admin name
-rendevous name
-work group
-apple talk
-IP address
so what did i do when i had the HD in my network, was that a server or file sharing ??????
when im in an app like FCP i can easily import or open from ANY HD......'drop box' doesn't appear, so you can see why thats important.
Each G4 has a seperate address....00 -01.......but when i enter that i get an error -36 (still can't find error list)
when i try to login as registered user i get LOGIN FAILED.
-since i don't use a password i am wondering about......'log on is disabled'.......what is that ?
i remember in other apps when there is a problem it says to TRASH YOUR PREFS.........coult that be an issue here ?
i have never used passwords and then i engaged the lock and restarted and it would NOT open w/o a password.......so needed to re-do one from install disk, im thinking that could have stuff-bad data stuck somewhere like 'keychain'.....so w/o doing a total re-install, how can i start over basically eliminating all the crap i have done ?
But my main question is.....to see the other HD from connct to server.....is that 'fileshareing' or simply a network, i don't get it ?
Any help would be great.
-daveCornelius & Gerald......
Wanted to express my sincere appreciation in walking me thru this, offering your ideas and insight, but mostly your support....just knowing your real people (gentleman) that took a moment to offer what you could and were there with me thru the duration.......to me thats 'support'.
As fun and rewarding and at time frustrating it is to work as a MAC person, a minority im proud to be proud of. Not so much for the 'magic' of the techknowledgy that at one time was very special......but now that magic in my opinion is in the people, the community which you guys just reminded me of.
The current {MAC vs. PC} ads on TV reveal a 'part' of the many unique differences between the potential computer buyers.........MAC is young & hip, simple yet powerful, a symbol of yourself in a way. The window's based PC is complicated, designed for boring application, suseptible to illness....very much like why are parents drive practicle & boring and we drive the Super SUV that gets you there in style, can haul your boat as well as become part of your business.........
Well as we all know..... many of us being older, single parents, running a biz that wasn't even thought of 10 years ago, surrounded by hi-tek gear EVERYWHERE probably would agree that its NOT the computer or even the software....its the USER who makes it special !
It was 1995 and all my dreams of building grand set-designs for special events were put on hold cuz of spine problem that caused me chronic-pain and would be just too much to build and be responsible for.......thats when i discovered a dormant passion for video.
A friend worked at local PC discount ctr. and deducted his comm. and i got my 1st PC-clone, pre-pentium, no power or memory, but at the time, like every other idiot i was happy w/this box.....it controlledmy music keyboard and drum machine, learned that basic concept of what a PC allowed folks to do. To compose a pristine document, w/spellcheck...wow. A fax app that could fax lists of numbers......you could see how this overgrown calculator can transform a biz in your garage and make it look like a huge pollished corp........but what changed everything for me guys was this simple gadget that i first saw demonstrated on HSN home shopping, and boy was i sold. It was called SNAPPY* and for $100 you plugged this into your parrelel port and Viola'.......i had access to litterly anything ! It was simply a capture device that used RCA in's.......so that meant anything from your VideoCam/VCR and that meant ANYTHING you could record, turned my 1st RCA OmniMovie cam (pawn shop $300) into a 'moving scanner'.
It was one of those magical momets in life where you become drunk on inspiration....all the potential, all the images i could get inside and then real excitment imerged when realized that this wasn't just a media capture device but very sophiticated paint-photo retouch application. This was so new to me......my first ever computer exp was at 'kinkos' copy shop using the first MACs and i remember a simple way to add color by hand and maybe at that time i was impressed by that.......this was called Fauve-Matiste which i used before Photshop which if i remember that was something you went to commercial art school and then a ad agency to use the elite Adobe products........this was doing retouch right in my own home. I recall the brushes could mix and blend multiple colors paint, an effct i still havent seen in PS.
I remember adding space and stars around faces, making wild collages using various images i would blend and layer. The project that really affectd me was a still of the bus in the movie Speed where it crashes into the parked Jet. Seeing rear of the bus all surrounded by flames i gave my self an assignment to add smoke clean up blurlike im prepping for a poster........that was such a huge thing for me. I had became pretty good at real air-brushing, but this was so controlled, no changing messy paint, clean up or mistakes that are difficult to repair, in the PC you un-do things that don't work (theres time in real life i reach to UN-do a task and realize.....duh) So I knew computeres were special in some way, they could 'run things' like machines, robots......but home PC had some limitations and when your young and nieve the limits can be as simple as your knowledge of whats available. Video games didn't impress me cuz i have never seen a game that brings a group of people into it, always 1 player then another.....I would rather do something creative that where the music MIDI interface was the first 'wow' i felt.....then the capture and paint.
The reason im giving you this backstory is right at this point is where my creativity w/ painting/retouching captured stillsand my search for what else can i do w/this box led me to wanting to start editing these still projects into other creative projects. Keep in mind 'cable access has been around for several years and a great way to get exposer for any AV project you put some time into......considering all the cheezy crap i have seen on there I kick myself for not following thru. My biggest part of any creative endevour art or music, if no one else ever is exposed to it, no other feedback, its like the most important element is missing.
Thats when i began to put 2+2 together and see that video, moving pics are gonna be important, and other then COPS-MTV there wasn't the range of reality TV we have today. The reason thats important, some very smart people thought FILM based projects whether animation shorts or documentaries whatever would always be the norm that VIDEO could never cut the mustard......and if you remember how bad early anolog video was, even Hi8 w/ pro lighting in the adult ent. could look pretty bad........so once DV entered and could be edited non-lin, OK the local news had good video quality but cost what over 100k and that old way of A/B roll was all changing. So my point was even though there were video cards for my old PC that actual footage would have been a few seconds........thats when i made the call !!!!!
The point for this yaking rant.
Instead of calling places that sell video gear (they sell you-what they want to)......i looked in the YP for companies that 'shoot-edit' produce professional video.........and thats when i heard those infamous words.
"People who do pro work use MACs'
Honestly at that timei had no real idea what made one diff from a PC. I new that this thing called Pentium was gonna be big, but i ask around about using PC for video and never got the feeling like they were made for that even though some apps claimed they could work......i remember some guy talking about [Jen-lock] which i think is what the news uses for editing, it doesn't capture ALL the footage, more like 2 videocams pluged into a VCR can do simple edits and i did make a few of my first video projects that way and that was cool........but the person at the video production who made it clear that MAC is the only way to go if your serious also mentioned that there are 2 new developments that are a huge deal.....1st being the G4 ready for video w/ Firewire and then the application designed for it Final Cut Pro. All you need is a DV cam w/ a FW port and you'll be set kid.
Of course i had no idea what any of this meant or how it would change and dominate the next several years of my life. But for all the times i never listened when i should have, this time i felt i new something that i should keep in mind........so when my father who became ill and needed a care ctr decided to give me and my sisters a substatial some money i wanted to make a smart decision, not blow it on a car or trip or whizz it away on chasin girls, he said to me why not go to some tek school for video, get a degree. That sounded like a great idea make him proud in his final years, so i called that same guy up and asked a few more questions trusting his insight.> He told me that first off the teachers won't know this application, they will be learning it as you do, and it would be unlikely they will have the newer G4s......which means you spend all your cash........you now will learn at the pace the instructer does, he might have great knowledge on camera operation and lighting, but that can be learned other ways. Then if you don't live on or near campus you will always be fighting for MAC time probably on the older G3 and the most important thing you can do is spend time w/the proper gear. Sure being around other creative students who have passion and talent is very important, just like having access to real pros who know the biz old school........but if you have either or........invest in your own gear, you add a 3chip Canon DV to that setup and a few other things you willhave your own Digital Editing Suit that you can learn at your own pace and have access 24/7.......while those guys are fighting for time like a laundry mat you will master the basisin no time and then get to the place where its 'your creativity' that counts......you put that on your demo reel and if you've got it......that degree won't matter. Sure if you can do both, own your DVE and also have the class atmosphere cuz your gonna need people to help in your productions.......but if your excited and motivated you should be able to find plenty of people to work with.....hang around that class and any others to make contacts, but own your own gear. While they are paying back school loans you will be able to charge for your services.
So thats my story i wanted to share with you guys and how ultimatly even w/o class mates to learn with......having a 'world' of fellow MAC users who are kind helping and loyal to not only their MAC of choice but the apple community and support friends they have never met but share a unique kinship in the elegance of what can this sleek machine add to our lives......and if we need help or ideas there someone out there has gone thru what you have.......and that almost always means it leads to some kind of success.
Anyway i would really like to hear what projects you guys work on.....what led you to being loyal to MAC or experience's that made it clear your glad you did........and are the current MACs still special compared by speed-power-reliabilty-ease of use ?
So again thanks for that support.......comcast wanted $150 plus $5 a month stating i would need their support........thast just too much for a simple router i found for $19........and w/ your help go it going.....having no support, no MAC community is when i feel overwhelmed and that steels my creativity away, so that why i shared allthis........i shows how important you all our.
so thanks again.........share a bit yourself......i look forward to it.

Network setup, help needed..
Since i am getting a new internet connection (100mbit glass-fibre) i want to make a perfect setup network. Since im not entirely sure how to set it up i ask for some help.
First off, what i have on the network (or want to have):
-Several Macs (100/1000 base)
-Several Windows machines (100/1000 base)
-FTP server (maybe more than just FTP)
-Wireless connectivity
-Printers
Network stuff i already have:
-router (10/100m)
-8 port 1000 base ethernet switch
-Airport express
-I am getting another ethernet switch since i am losing 4 ports that are on the old modem.
I am guessing that if i just hook the router up to the switch, and then the AE to the switch i wont have any trouble.
But now sometimes have trouble in my current setup, that is modem/router/hub (in one device) and then plugged into this an AE and switch. But but some PC's cant see each other, is that caused by the modem device (the hub inside it)? And so will i have that problem with the new setup i described?
If u think i need other devices please say so, i just want everything to work at the highest speed possible.
Thanks in advance.A long time ago, I worked on a print spooler and was lent a JetDirect
box from HP to test with. A JetDirect card is in your LaserJet, I believe.
(One of the protocols it supported was localtalk, BTW). I think the
d-link isn't forwarding your localtalk packets. Anyway, one of the
things I remember is that the JetDirect spoke PCL, so that's another
consideration a driver has to deal with. The garbage you're seeing
is raw postscript. It needs to be rasterized and translated to PCL.
Please bear with me, my experience is very old, and there are gaps
in my knowledge. But I think this is do-able. I think the first step is
to add the printer directly by clicking here,
The location of the printer should be the address of the print server
(or canonical name if you're ever going to change addresses). The
device should be appsocket/jetdirect. The device uri should be
socket://nameoripaddressofdevice. The make should be HP and
the model/driver should be one of the Laserjet series, gimp-print.
I don't know which one, my experience ended around Laserjet 5, and
so do the drivers! But fundamentally they have to do the same thing.
They use the gimp-print package to rasterize the postscript and
encapsulate it into PCL. So I would bet the LaserJet 6 driver will work.
I'm sure everything posted here is correct, and that my experience
is too old and I don't know enough to know why this won't work,
but it's not a lot of effort, and if I were you I'd give it a try.

Powerbook G4, iMac (Intel), and tons of hardware sitting in the closet Mac OS X (10.4.8) -
I have a cisco 891 router, and 3 unmanaged switches that i would like to use to segment my small office network into 3 VLANs groups to help reduce out current bottleneck we are having in our network. From everything i read i should be able to setup 3 VLANs on the router, and pick 3 out of the 8 ports on the router to be switchports for each of the 3 VLANs, and each of the 3 switches would connect to those.
My question is, when i setup the VLAN i cannot access the internet, though the inital VLAN 1 which currenlty has all our office computers sharing 1 switch and 1 VLAN works fine, any ideas? Is segmenting our network via 3 switches and 3 VLANs going to help with overall bandwidth?
My last question is, what are the proper steps to setup each VLAN on the router so i can access the internet with them and achieve the increased bandwidth through segmenting each office group?
I am new to cisco routers, so any help you can give me would be great. Thanks for your help. I think ive helped myself on the bandwidth end by spliting up my office on to 3 switches, but still using 1 VLAN. Before we had 16 people using 1 100Mbps link to the router which was at times getting maxed. Now i have it split across 3. But for security reasons with accounting and such i still want to setup 3 vlans. Here is the version information on the router:

So thats the config right now, i have not added the vlans yet, because when i did it shutdown all our network, so i went back to our working config. So if you can tell me what steps i need to setup the vlans that would be great. I need to start another thread about VPNS, cause i cant get our VPN working either but thats another story
