Ethernet Speed Setting

Not really sure if this is the right forum, but here goes. I am upgrading a spare PCI Graphics G4/350 Mhz for use as a backup server. I bought a Netgear GA311 Gigabit card after reading a review from xlr8yourmac.com. After installing it and rebooting, it did not show up as a port. The Netgear website does not have OS X drivers, but the same xlr8yourmac article said to download a RealTek 8169 driver and it would work. I did and it did. But after testing it with a rather large file transfer, I'm not sure I am getting any speed boost. I transferred the same 28GB folder with both the built-in port and the new port to the same location. There was only about a minute difference. I then went into the network preferences and changed the ethernet tab to manually adjust the speed to 1000BaseTX. Again, there was no speed difference. Any other suggestions?

What is the port speed of the destination? Both computers must have the ability to run at the same Ethernet speed. If you are transferring from a computer running at 100 mbps to a computer running at 10 mbps, the transfer cannot be any faster than the slower machine. If you have a hub/switch in the network then data moves no faster than the max speed of the hub/switch.
If you are transferring over the internet via a cable modem, for example, your speed can be no faster than the network speed.

  • Slow Ethernet speed on gigabit network - new facts

    Hi,
I have the problem that I have a G4 with a built-in gigabit ethernet card that only delivers 100MBit-speed. And the switch only showed a green light (meaning 100 MBit) instead of amber light (meaning gigabit).
    I found this discussion
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2506507?start=15&tstart=0
but I cannot post my reply there as it‘s closed.
So I played a little bit around with my network settings – and to my surprise by changig my network setting for the gigabit card (on the "Ethernet" tab) manually from 1000baseT to 100baseTX I COULD MAKE THE SWITCH LIGHT CHANGE FROM GREEN TO AMBER!
Unhappily the network speed did not change (I transferred some gig files to check). But it gave me the idea that there must be a bug in some preference setting, a plist or some text file that is hidden somewhere down in system or library …
And this file seems to be hidden behind the pop-up list on the Ethernet tab of the network panel in system preferences.
Could anybody help from this point on to solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot for helping
    Reinhard

    Hi,
thanks for your answer. I checked everything you mentioned.
Network Utility always reflects (I mean: shows the identical) speed setting in System Utilities. Having a setting there of 1000 MBit shows a speed of 1GBit in Network Utility, 100MBit here shows a 100MBit there.
But the light indicator on the switch shows differently. And the real file transfer speed always only shows 100MBit-Speed.
In the G4 there is no Airport Card built in.
The 1GBit-card is always on top of the list. This is true for the normal view in System Preferences, where it show the green indicator, too. And it‘s true when I open this additional list of Service Order after having clicked onto this gear icon.
So it‘s still the same: Green light on the switch when I set the speed manually or automatically to Gigabit. And yellow light on the switch when I set the speed to 100MBit. And always only 100MBit speed when transferring files over the network.
Thanks for helping so far. I‘d be glad if you can help further with tests and ideas.
    Thanks
    Reinhard

Lion always forgets my mouse speed setting after using Boot Camp.  How do I retain this info in Lion?

After I posted my question this thread showed up in the side bar.  Too bad it didn't show up when I searched the forums prior to posting.

  • Trackpad forgets speed setting

Under Lion, my Magic Trackpad keeps forgetting its speed settings (how quickly a single-finger motion moves the cursor on the screen). I have it set one notch down from fastest, and it will randomly reset to the middle setting. I've not had this problem before.
It might have something to do with my using Parallels Desktop with a Windows 7 virtual machine, because the mouse speed setting seems to get reset there as well. When the trackpad resets, it happens universally -- both within the VM and outside of it. I'm not sure, however, whether Parallels is the problem. I never had this issue prior to Lion.
Anyone experiencing this issue who isn't using Parallels?
Anyone having this issue WITH Parallels? If so, have you had any luck working around it? Maybe it will be fixed in the next Parallels update.
Also, I think this is a general trackpad issue -- not just with the Magic Trackpad but with the built-in trackpad on my MacBook Air as well.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Yes, I will post feedback both to Apple and Parallels about this.

    Hi Linda,
    Did you ever resolve this?
I have this issue too, but ONLY when Parallels (v6) is running. I run it in the "crystal" Coherence mode.

  • Disappointing WRT610N Gigabit Ethernet speed

I'm very disappointed with the wired Gigabit speed on this WRT610N router. I've got three high end Gigabit capable computers connected to the router via the wired interfaces and the best speed I can get is from any system to another is 38% of Gigabit maximum (~46 MBytes/s). I've tried numerous protocols (SMB, FTP, SSH) all with about the same results. This must be some hardware limit of the router.  Is there any way to increase this speed? I really don't want to buy another router just to get good quality ethernet speeds.
PS: All cables are quality CAT6.
    TIA,

the ethernet switch BCM53115 is used on the wrt610N
this same switch is also used on the wrt320N router.
The hardware does support jumbo frames, however linksys did not enabled this in the firmware's.

to bad we have to complane that jumbo frames is not enabled.

  • IMac i5 27" - gigabit ethernet speed slooooooow

I know there are other (older) threads about this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2236017?tstart=0) but I thought I'd start a new one.
I have just purchased an iMac i5 27", and find that plugging it into my Netgear GS605 gigabit ethernet switch doesnt work as expected. My older 24" iMac works as espected, just fine.
I am able to get a gigabit connection (green light on switch) and if I try to copy large files form another Mac or my Lacie 2Big Network 2 NAS it works fine. BUT, if I then try to surf the web, my download speeds are ridiculously low (should be 30MB/s, getting 0.4)??
If I manually downgrade the ethernet controller settings to 100B/T, the internet speed works just fine, but obviously local transfers are then crippled to fast ethernet speed, which on a 200GB Time Machine backlup isn't much fun!
I have had many conversations with Apple Support, and returned one of these iMac's already, to find the next one does the same thing - all very frustrating.
So is there a fix? Can the Broadcom chipset be to blame? Is it to do with Jumbo frame support (whatever that is) - the Netgear switch supports it, but not sure about the iMac, and why does the internet speed drop so dramatically, when the file transfer speed works as expected over gigabit ethernet?
Grrrrr. Really frustrating I can't have high speeds on both types of transfer.
    Any help gratefully received!

btw, i've already tried creating another user, and while things are ok in the beginning, slowly but surely the same symptoms begin to appear and then become chronic.
Have you tried Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

  • Ethernet speed problem after OS 10.4 security update

I have a G4 iMac and a G4 Powerbook both running 10.4.11. The iMac is on an ethernet cable and the powerbook connects wirelessly through an Airport Express to a Dynalink ADSL2+ modem/router and both used to work fine... until the recent security update.
Having solved the 'Another application has changed your network settings' on the iMac (using this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1730909&tstart=0), I still have an ethernet problem on both machines.
Network connection will now only work with ethernet manually set to 10baseT, when before automatic worked fine. That includes the Airport. Copying files between the G4 machines and printing using the Airport Express as a usb print server is all mega slow.
Tried setting modem/router back to default settings but that hasn't solved it.
My MacPro running 10.5 has had no problem. Any ideas please anyone??

Hi Roger, and a warm welcome to the forums!
On that cure... did you just lock the Security settings, or did you also trash those pliss, an'or make copies of your Locations & delete the old ones?

Yup, check the firewall settings. Since you said firmware is updated, then you may need to reset and reconfigure the router.

  • Not getting full Gigabit Ethernet Speed on iMac Core Duo

I am using Airport to connect to a Linksys Wireless Access Point connected to my DSL modem. I am using ethernet to connect to a 3Com OfficeConnect 8-port Gigabit switch. I have 2x 500 GB LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini's (with Gigabit interface) connected to the switch.
The lights on the switch tell me that the drives and iMac are connected at full speed, however I can transfer a 650MB .dmg file to a firewire 400 drive in 1/4 of the time it takes to transfer the same file to one of the gigabit ethernet drives.

    Thanks

If you are transferring data via wireless then you cannot approach Gigabit Ethernet speed. 802.11g has a maximum transfer speed of 54 Mbps while 802.11n is about 130 Mbps. This is much slower than a FW400 port. Your router and switch must both be Gigabit capable and your drive must be connected to Ethernet to even hope to achieve Gigabit speeds - no wireless.

  • Ethernet speed slow since security update 2014-001

    Dear community
I'm running a Mac Pro early 2009. OSX 10.7.5. Internet through Ethernet cable connected to a dlink router dsl-g624t. This has been my setup for years. All worked fine.
As of last few days (corresponds with my updating the system with apples security update 2014-001) that my Internet download speed is 0.01 Mbps it used to be 5.0 Mbps. I can't connect to anything. Sometimes it's ok for a few seconds then dies down completely. Connecting to the routers own IP address is slow as well.
I've plugged the Ethernet cable into another mac (laptop) and all runs at approx 5.0 Mbps as it should. I've connected the Ethernet cable between the Mac Pro and the mac laptop and transferred a 1Gb file both ways with out any noticeable speed issues. I've connected my ipad wirelessly to the router and I can achieve good speeds, again about 5.0 Mbps. Same with my iPhone.
In system pref/network it states the Ethernet 1 is connected, with an IP address etc. as if there was no problem.
What is going on. The Ethernet cable works, the router works, a connection over Ethernet between my two macs works.
What doesn't work anymore is my Mac Pro connecting to the router via Ethernet. It's so slow it can't load a simple web page in either safari or Firefox, other web connecting apps time out as well.
    Someone please help
    With much thanks in anticipation

Going to reply to my own question here.
I've never let a mac get the best of me in 15years of working with them but this problem had me stumped. Anyway I did figure it out. Not being very experienced with network issues I had to tincer about a bit. Anyway the fix for this should someone else have it can be found here in... system preferences/network/ethernet (1or2)/advanced.../Hardware/ once in this option window I had to change 'configure' to 'manual' and 'speed' to '10baseT/UTP' and 'Duplex' to 'full-duplex' and 'MTU' to 'Standard 1500'. I then had my full ethernet speed back. I believe it had all been changed by the recent security update.
I hope that helps someone sometime.

  • Adobe Reader ignores mouse scroll speed setting

Whenever I load a .PDF file, the mouse scroll wheel setting is ignored and the document scrols 1 line at a time. This is very annoying when trying to read a document, especially is it is a long one.
Is there a way to set the scroll speed in the Reader so that it matches the Windows scroll speed setting?

How to make it properly, anyone?
fixed it, just needed to remove "$" sign in “^chromium$” > “^chromium”.
One thing is if imwheel working, you cant increase fonts in chromium with "ctrl + wheel" unfortunately.

  • TC slow ethernet speed w/ mac mini, not anti-virus

new TC 1tb, running wireless to one macbook pro, one sony laptop, and ethernet to mac mini. update done to TC, including airport utility. no anti virus.
using it as the primary wireless source, with cable modem.
first backup was awfully slow, both by wireless, then do-over by ethernet.
speed on local network streaming mp4s through ethernet cable is bad to awful. copying files from TC to usb (in mac mini) is awful. searching for songs through itunes is slow (though library is 500gb).
the heat explanation is of course, just laughable. you give me a beautiful flat piece of equipment and you don't expect me to put my mac mini on top? terrible design flaw if true.
also, tried the re-boot and the shortened DCHP time.
no other good explanations that i could find.
So unless there are some great ideas out there, i guess
i should understand from all the threads that this thing just doesn't work as a primary file server. and its not so good at backup either.
its just too slow. please help if anyone has another suggestion, but i think that regardless i have to take it back.
glad i didn't erase my library from the WD My Book.
what a waste of my time this has been.

just bought a new 12" Powerbook and it will not connect to my local dial up ISP any faster than 28k. I've had the same ISP for over ten years. I've had the same phone line in my same apartment for over ten years. The G3 iBook I just sold connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 iMac I have at home connects at 56k almost every time. The Performa 6400 I used to have connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 Sawtooth I have in my music studio a couple of blocks away using a different phone line connects at 56k almost every time. Same ISP for over ten years, two different phone lines that work fine with four other Macs, the only Mac I've had that won't connect at 56k is my brand new Powerbook. It won't connect at 56k using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4 or 10.4.4. I tested the connection with CNET's online modem bandwidth test page and the Powerbook modem was connecting at about 26k.
so I took my PowerBook to the Apple store in San Francisco, they sent it to be repaired and when it came back said they replaced the modem, but it still won't connect at 56k when all my other Macs will.
so I took my PowerBook back to the Apple store in San Francisco, and they connected it to a phone line and got a 31k connection and told me, Well the modem connects, so as far as we're concerned it works, and 56k is only the maximum theoretical connection speed and Apple does not guarantee you will actually get that modem baud rate, so we are not going to do anything else about it. I told them that there is nothing theoretical about all my other Macs connecting to the same ISP at higher speeds than the PowerBook and that Apple should be able to test the PowerBook to determine if their own tech guys can get a 56k connection with my PowerBook. The Apple store "genius" called his manager, who refused to do any more work on the computer.

  • Ethernet speeds from modem to Airport

    Hey guys,
My current modem/router is a Belkin with 10/100 Ethernet. But I am considering an Airport extreme/Time Capsule for it's GigE ports, Easy Hard Drive Sharing, and Setup, plus all the other selling points.
But I will need a new modem to go with that an Airport/Time Capsule. Or will I? The Belkin works fine - it's just on the slow side ethernet wise, and isn't great for hard drive sharing (1TB max drive size).
    So my question's are:
    1. If I use a Modem (Belkin, or a new one) with only a 10/100 Ethernet port, will that
    - Make my wifi any slower?
    - Make GigE connections to my Apple Router slower? (For internet, but also for streaming, NAS drives etc).
    2. Can anyone recommend a good modem to use with airport? (Preferably with GigE)
    3. If I use my Belkin router (Theoretical 300mbps, but seems to be 54mbps actual), and Airport extreme (Which I assume performs better) on the same network:
    - Will my network perform at "Belkin" or "Apple" speeds?
    - Will the Airport just Extend the network? Or will it be the main router on the network? (The APE is newer, and if I could turn off the Belkins routing, I would.)
    - Are there any technical/compatibility issues I should be aware of?
    4. Can anyone recommend other routers I could look into with similar/better features? For me to pick it over the Apple products, it would have to have some or all of these:
    - 1 More Ethernet port,
    - Faster wifi (450mbps)
    - Built in modem
    - USB 3 port
    - A MUCH lower price point (Don't care about $20 or $30, but if I could get a great router for $100 less...)
It MUST have a USB port for network storage, with no (Or very high) limitations on drive size (My Belkin only supports drives up to 1TB), GigE, and preferably easy setup, and the ability to pasword protect folders on attached Hard Drives would be awesome.
    5. Any inside info on an updated Airport soon? The Gen 5's are 15 months old now.
    Cheers!

    Hi ,
This is my first reply and I am tempted to reply to to you because I recently bought Airport Express and put in some effort setting it up.
         1) I don't thing modem will be a bottleneck in your internet speed. Just use the ethernet port of belkin router and connect it to Airpot using a ethernet cable.
         2) If you connect Airport to Belkin Router and configure it to bridge mode, it would just act as a modem and not wifi or we can say Airport would use the modem functionality of the Belkin router.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks
    Abhishek
