Ethernet storage unit that is mac compatible?

Ok I can't use my usb ports and firewire port. I want to back up my computer so i can ship it to get fixed but everything is either usb, or buy time capsule. Money is not permitting a time capsule at this time and I was wondering if someone could point me to an ethernet alternative? Brand names? Names at all will be appreciated, thank you.

Of course you've googled, "ethernet backup drives" already so I won't suggest it.

  • Is there a good but free word processor that's Mac compatible?

I don't know where else this question would belong so I just put it here. So, my question is: Is thier a free (but decent) word processor that's Mac compatible that I can download off of the internet? I've already used up my free trial of "Pages" that came with my iMac. I'd also like it to be able to save and print off text documents and also be PC compatible as well.

Hi, you already have Text Edit, I use BEAN//it's pretty good, but you can Google your requirements and there are quite a few "freebies"

  • Want to Buy Camcorder that has Mac Compatible Software

I am in the market for a Camcorder in the $300 - $400 price range. I would like to find one that has Mac compatible software. All the ones that I have checked on Amazon, etc. are only PC compatible.
Are there any Mac compatible Camcorders available in my price range?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Most consumer camcorders will work with iMovie, which comes preinstalled on your Mac. You don't need any special software to capture/ingest the footage.

I own Adobe CS4 for PC, but recently purchased a Mac. Can my license be transferred to a download that is Mac compatible?

No, it cannot. Platform swaps only for current versions, meaning CS4 and I'm afraid you are long past any upgrade eligibility, too. that and of course CS4 is not compatible with current versions of OSX. So before endlessly wasting time, simply sign up for Creative Cloud.

  • Where can I find a list of Games that are Mac compatible?

That is my question. Anyone know? thanks

If the games you want are by Aspyr then this problem is easily solved...
    Aspyr Game Agent:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/utilities/aspyrgameagent.html
    It will:
"match your computer hardware with the system requirements of Aspyr’s latest game titles"
"Game Agent is an OS X application that automatically checks your Mac configuration — including OS version, RAM size, video card and processor speed — and then, game by game, tells the you if a game will run well, will run or will not run on your system. It then gives a summary of hardware or software updates necessary for those games that will not run."
If however the games are by another developer... you're back to the pulling out your hair in frustration...
If you can find the age of the game if should give you a good clue (ie if 2 years or less it should be OS X)
    hope that helps...

  • I am a picture framer looking for pricing softwear that is mac compatible, please?

I have found a number of Picture Framing Price packages but none that work with my Mac does any one have any ideas please?

    There's this one:
    http://www.frameready.com
If that won't suit you, perhaps one of the packages on this list would work:
    http://www.getthepictureframing.com/gfaq/software.htm
If you can't find a Mac version that works for your needs, you can always get a Windows package and run Windows on your Mac either via Boot Camp or one of the virtualization solutions.

  • Recommend a wireless USB adaptor that is Mac compatible?

As I really need my MacBook to see wifi networks and not being able to wait to see if 10.5.3 fixes up the airport problems I was wondering if anyone has used and can recommend a wireless USB adaptor?
    Thanks for any help
    mark

I haven't used it, but it is sold by a Mac-centric vendor that I trust, OWC. If they sell it, it probably works well with Macs.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to both wirelessly back up 2 Macs and as a file storage device that both Macs can access wirelessly?

In a perfect world I’d like to be able to download movies and music to my computer, both through iTunes and other ways, but rather than transfer everything to a portable hard drive and then plug the hard drive into a media box to get it on the TV, simply be able to wirelessly move it to the TV, or in the case of music the airport express or some such system.
I’d even like to take this one step further and have a central drive that the home computers are networked to, or at least can access files from (wirelessly), have it backed up to the cloud, and have it be the ‘hub’ for files, music and video.
Can Time Capsule serve this purpose?

Can Time Capsule serve this purpose?
    No .. it cannot.
    Here is why.
The TC can be pressed into service.. it is not designed for it.. and in fact is really poor mainly due to no backup..
You can plug in a USB drive which is slow but does work fine for wireless access.. ie wireless is even slower than the slow disk.
    Take the following into account.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
A much better albeit slower device is the WD MyCloud.
It has no inbuilt wireless but you will just plug it into your wireless router.. hence wireless access.
You should still not use it to store iphoto library.
And the idea of streaming wireless from a central store basically is not going to work. Wireless networking is too slow, and has many limitations.
Buy a Mini and use that as a HTPC or media computer and use it plugged directly into the TV.

  • Mac Compatible Wireless USB Dongle

Recently, I purchased a used iBook G4 (Mid 2005). The price was right, but the seller informed me that there was an issue with the Airport card. That issue being that the computer would kernel panic whenever airport was turned on.
I have been running the computer smoothly with airport turned off and a direct connection to the internet. However, the lack of portability is becoming frustrating, and rather than pay to have the computer serviced, or replace the card myself (Airport Card is not a DIY on the mid 2005 iBook like I initially thought), I decided to buy a USB dongle to connect to my wireless network.
However, after several frustrating searches, I have been unable to find a USB dongle that is Mac compatible. I imagine that many are compatible with OS X 10.4.11 even if it isn't explicitly mentioned, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a good USB dongle that I would be able to use with little to no problems.
Ooops! Should have marked this topic as a question. My apologies ...

http://www.macwireless.com/ may have a solution for you, but it won't be USB. You can attach an ethernet wireless router to the ethernet port of the machine and share a wireless network with another wireless router. I don't recommend using USB wireless dongles as they tend to be slower than you may want, and frequently they only have non-standard drivers, which can get very picky if the machine falls asleep.

  • I need a Mac compatible photo scanner

Does anyone know a good scanner that is Mac compatible that I can scan old photos and have them come out good so I can store them in IPhoto. I can't seem to find one that isn't for Windows or a PC. I would really like to preserve my old photos in my computer.

    Hi,
I just got the HP G4050 last week. It's scans Pics, 35mm slides and negatives. I have scanned 166 35mm slides and have imported them into iPhoto. So far It's words great. The only thing is that you need to download the MAC Leopard software from the HP site, and they don't tell you that in the instructions that come with the scanner.

  • Mac Compatible DVD Player List?

A few years ago I got a list of DVD players that were Mac compatible from here. Can someone provide me with a link to that list if it's still around. My JVC just died and I need a replacement. It needs to understand iDVD movies as well as copy's (yes they're legal, if you have kids I'm sure you understand the reasoning).
    Thanks for any help,
    Tony

I thought the same thing until I tried playing numerous DVD's on my mother-in-laws system that shows that support, sometimes they play sometimes not, mostly the latter.
This could be the result of a high rate of burn errors caused by poor media and/or high burn speeds. Such discs will often play in some players and not others and also, not always play in the same player that once played them.
Use good quality media (Verbatim or Maxell) and burn at 4x or slower. iDVD doesn't offer any burn speed options, so you must create a disk image file out of iDVD (an option under FILE) and then use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast Titanium to actually burn the disk image to writable at a slow speed (both offer burn speed choices).

  • Digital recorders are not Mac compatible are they?

I see digital recorders frequently, but have yet to find one that is Mac compatible. Does anyone know of one, or are you still using tapes?
    John

    Hey John,
Not too many out there, I agree. The only one I could find is pretty darn high end. The Olympus DS-2300. However, at $250, its got a pretty steep price point. But, its got a lot of features and seems pretty nice. Hope this helps!
