Ethernet Switch metals

I need a switch that does not have nickel plating, which some RJ45 connectors have. the SF100D-16 appears to have black RJ45 jacks, which would point to a non-nickel plating. does anyone know what material the RJ45 connectors and housing are made of?
Thanks!

  • Can I use an ethernet switch to add a "pogoplug" device to my Airport express router? Or do I need a different router?

I have an airport express router and decided to get a "pogoplug device" (cloud service to store files etc.). It requires to be connected to router per ethernet but I realized too late there is only one ethernet connection in the router. A friend suggested I get an ethernet switch but it still doesn't work...Do I need a new router?

Then, unfortunately, no as the single Ethernet port of the AX needs to be connected to the Ethernet port of your Broadband modem.
One option is to get another AX, and then, configure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. It would connect to the first AX by wireless, and then, you can connect the PogoPlug to it.

  • Do I need an ethernet switch or new router for IP camera setup with old Airport Express

    Hello,
I am trying to setup a third party Foscam IP camera to my network so that I can ultimately use it as a baby monitor, and am having some difficulty.  I currently still have an old Airport Express (with one ethernet port only).  This is preventing me from setting up the initial camera because I don't have another ethernet port to plug it in to on the router.  I am wondering if I can just buy an ethernet switch and have it "split" the ethernet from my modem to both the camera and the Airport (I do need to check with my ISP provider if they give me two separate IP address... but if they do, would this work?).
I am fairly sure however, that my ISP provider (comcast) only provides one IP for my account.  Does this mean I would have to buy a new router altogether with more than one ethernet port on it or one with a WAN port?  Would I, in this case, have to plug the modem into the WAN port on the router, and then the camera to one of the ethernet ports on the router?
I consider myself fairly tech savy, but when it comes to routers, IPs, LAN, WAN, etc. I get a bit lost.  This has been creating quite a headache for me and any help would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but this won't work as the modem expects only a single device ... either a computer or a router to be connected to it. Unless your modem is actually a combination modem & router or gateway device, then you would need a different router to solve your networking problem.

  • Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch. Failed to connect Ethernet switch port

    Hello Folks
I am completely stuck with the configuration of my virtual networks. I have one logical switch left to add to one of my Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts when I started getting the error below when I try to add logical switches to either Hyper-V Host. I have been using
the document. 'Hybrid Cloud with NVGRE (Cloud OS)' to implement the virtual networking. Basically using the exact configuration that is in the document. I have added the PA Logical Network and the Network adapters and added the logical switch for it to my
hyper-v 2012 R2 host and everything was fine. I am now trying to add my ISCSI Logical Switch to the host and this is the error I get. My other Hyper-V host I get this error for any logical switch I am trying to add. Can someone help me with this error. I haven't
been able to find any information about it.
Also a some quick info on tracing an error like this so I can figure out what is causing it.
Thsi is my configuration so far
So as far as I know everything is peachy untill the error below. Dead stop now

notice your GUID?  you may want to consider ensuring that is the same GUID associated in your database.  Sometimes during data corruption theres a smidge of a chance your sql database kind of either pulls old guids esp if this was reverted to snapshot
without it being powered off etc.
I would try that first.  then i would consider if you get to configure that with your current liscense associated with the host.  I would need way more info to help any further

  • Do I need to buy an ethernet switch that has a WAN port

I want to buy an Aiport Express to handle a WiFi only iPad and an old PPC iMac with 10.5.8 on it that has no WiFi card.  The iMac gets on the internet from a cable plugged directly into its ethernet port (using DHCP).  The cable comes off an antenna at the front of the cottage.  A signal hits the antenna from a broadcasting tower about half a mile away.
I need to buy an ethernet switch for the Aiport Express to handle both the iPad wirelessly and the wired iMac.  Does the switch have to have a WAN port or can I buy one with five LAN ports?
Message was edited by: Roy Vincent.  Spelling error

So here's what I am planning to do.  I get myself an ethernet switch.  I plug my cable from my antenna into it.  I run a cable from one of its five ports into my iMac.  I run a cable from one of its other ports into my Airport Express.  I configure the Airport Express in Bridge Mode.  Now my wife can connect to the web wirelessly using the iPad and I can connect using the wired iMac --- and we can do so at the same time and indpendently of one another.   No?
    Sorry, but no.
You only have one IP address.  With a switch feeding two devices, it will be a matter of chance as to which device gets the IP address.
The other device will not be able to connect to the Internet, since a switch cannot "split" the connection.
Instead, you need a simple wired router to "share" the public IP address that you receive. In turn, the router distributes "private" IP addresses to devices on your local network, so each device will be able to connect to the Internet.
As I mentioned, a switch cannot perform the functions of a router.

  • TC not seeing devices attached downstream via a ethernet switch

I have a number of switches in my home network and for whatever reason the TC is not seeing the devices downstream. I assume the TC works like every other router in existence and should be just fine working with ethernet switches. The switches work great on my old buffalo wap/router and if I turn off the buffalo wap/router, move the ethernet cables to the TC (reboot TC, not reboot doesn't matter) all the network devices go kaput.
Any suggestions would be great. I've tried everything turning TC off/on. Turning switches off/on, turning switch attached devices off/on. Nothing works. Plug switch ethernet cables back into the buffao wap/router and everything shows up just fine.
    Stumped.

There are some issues which have popped up with the TC and some routers.. particularly that the WAN connection is not working correctly.
Try using one of the LAN ports on the TC and see if that helps.
Also open the Network utility in the computer and run the netstat scan .. it looks like this.
Locate the TC on the computer that is having issues.
Then ping it.. use the full domain..
eg in terminal mine is ping tcgen4.local
I think you should rename the TC to all smb names.. ie short, no spaces pure alphanumeric as it simply works better.
Then if the TC shows up in the ping, mount the hard disk manually,
In finder, Go connect to server and type
AFP://TCname.local (use the full domain name of the TC from the netstat scan).. or use the IP you get when you ping it.. although that is going to keep changing unless you can lock it.

  • HT5438 Appletv doesn't work with an ethernet switch?

It worked before when connected directly to the modem, but I wanted to use my modem with my computer too for internet, so I added an ethernet switch and connected the three of them to it.  My internet works good in my computer, but apple tv doesn't work. It doesn't display netflix or any other option to watch video.

    Sidney,
please post your configuration. Are you using a router between the ethernet switch and the cable modem  which is connected to the internet? It is important to know  where the IP address' for your devices come from. Does the router  provide them, our your internet provider? Open System Preferences on the Macbook and go to the network settings and look at the IP address. The go to settings general on the Apple TV, then network settings and look at the IP address. the last diigits to the right of the period should be close to the same number like : 60.132.19.151  and 60.132.19.134. if they are similiar go to Network utiliy in the utilities portion of the applications folder. Open the Network utitilty and select the ping option. Enter the IP address and see if you can ping it.

  • Connecting an Ethernet switch to the AE?

    Hi,
I have a small wireless network at home with the following setup:
    1. Airport Express (802.11n) + ADSL modem connected to the ethernet port.
    2. Mac Pro (2008) w/Airport Extreme card
    3. Mac mini (2010) w/Airport Extreme card
    4. PC laptop with 802.11b/g card (serves as a media center)
    5. iPod touch
Since the laptop sits just beside the Airport unit I would like to connect it with a cable, for a couple of reasons:
    a. Its wireless card is slow and unreliable.
    b. I'd like to use Wake-on-LAN features
Since the Airport Express' only Ethernet port (which I understand serves for both WAN and LAN?) is already in use by the modem, I was wondering if I can connect the modem and the laptop to a simple ethernet switch (I was thinking of this one: http://www.edimax.com/en/producedetail.php?pd_id=281&pl1_id=4&pl2id=23) which will then be connected to the Airport Express. Is this possible?

You would need to use a simple wired only router...not a switch...to do what you want. Reason...with a switch, your "modem" is connected to two devices at the same time, but it can only deliver one IP address. It will be a matter of chance as to which device, the laptop or the Express connects to the Internet.
If the Express connects, then you will have no Internet signal for the laptop. If the laptop connects first, then you will have no Internet connection for the Express.
A router will accept a single IP address and provide additional IP addresses so that multiple devices will be able to connect.

  • Airport Express & Ethernet Switch

    Hi All,
I'm hoping somone can help me here.
I have an original Airport Express that was previously connected to an old Linksys router via my cable modem.
After experiencing intermitent web surfing speeds(via my ethernet connected iMac), I decided to swap my Linksys router to a NetGear 8 port gigabit switch.
My ethernet connection works fine, but for some reason the Airport express is not able to connect. In the airport utility, I am seeing two errors:
    1. Internet Connection
    2. No DNS Servers
I've reset the airport express numerous times as well as reset my cable modem, ethernet switch, and iMac.
I even doubled back and connected the old Linksys router and the Airport had no trouble connecting.
Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    -Sky

You removed your router, and cannot use a switch without one. There is nothing to switch.
Connect your Express directly to the cable modem and reconfigure it as a wireless router.
Since your original AirPort Express has only one Ethernet port, there is no longer a connection available for a switch. You either need a new Express or Extreme or router with at least one LAN port.

A switch port running in half duplex is basically the same as any other two hosts running half duplex between them.  When either host transmits, each has a chance to collide with a transmission from the other host.
As frames between switch ports are buffered, hosts on two different ports, even if they transmit at the same time, won't directly collide.  Again, though, if port is running half duplex, host can collide with switch port retransmitting the other host's traffic.  I.e. two hosts, on two different ports, behave (practically) as if they were directly connected.  The advantage of a switch, however, is another two hosts transmitting to each other won't collide between the two pairs, as they would on a hub.  I.e. on a hub A<>B frames may collide with C<>D frames, but they shouldn't on a switch.
If host ports are running in full duplex, there should be no collisions at all (which would also be true with a pair of hosts on a full duplex wire between them).
NB: above is just for unicast when switch "knows" destination MAC's port.

  • Gigabit x non-Gigabit Ethernet Switch

    Dear members:
I've looked at a few models of Ethernet switches to connect my computers to (a Windows PC, a Powerbook G4 17" and a Powermac G5) but have been confronted with a choice.
Some models are called "Gigabit" and others aren't. It apparently has something to do with speed - Gigabit switches are 10/100/1000 while those that are not Gigabit are simply labeled 10/100.
What is the difference between the Gigabit and non-Gigabit switches ?
Since I am using it to connect my computers to cable internet, should I get the Gigabit model or it really doesn't matter (my assumption is that since cable offers 1.5 to 2 Mbps speed this would fall under Gigabit, ?) ?
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Joseph

See my post in your other thread Ethernet Switch.
Since I am using it to connect my computers to cable internet, should I get the Gigabit model...
Only if it is about the same price (then why not?) or you plan to do very large Ethernet file transfers between your computers.

    Hi TomG101,
It seems that there is a configuration conflict on the virtual switch port .
Also I tested the command on my lab , it works .
For troubleshooting please  create a new virtual switch then try to configure again .
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • WIRED FAST ETHERNET SWITCH BY NETGear

Here is my issue and it may be answered best on another board, but here goes. I hooked up a Netgear FS605 Fast Ethernet Switch. I ran my cable connection through the switch out to my Airport and then onto my IMAC Desktop. It all flowed fine. I then ran a cable from the switch to our new ps3 in the basement which did not see the connection. Now I figured maybe my cable making skills are lacking so i testes to see if i had a signal using my laptop. I did not. SO I went upstairs directly to the switch took out a good E Cable and connected the laptop there and still no connection. So i am not sure if A the cable i ran for the PS 3 is bad, and B having a **** of a time getting the Etherenet Switch to be reconized on my LAPTOP. any ideas out there? Once i get the LAPTOP to see the switch i can then go and check my cable run.
    Thanks

  • Airport Express Failure Caused by Ethernet Switch

I was baffled for a while with frequent dropouts of one of my Airport Express units.  This one receives wireless from an Airport Extreme, then I connect its ethernet port to a gigabit switch which provides hardwire connections for my television, Blu-Ray, and Dish Network reciever.  I also use its audio port for AirPlay music to my stereo.
This configuration worked flawlessly for a long time.  Then it suddenly dropped out.  Timing coincided with the release of 7.6 AirPort firmware, and iTunes 10.5.1 ... so naturally I blamed Apple, downgraded the software, and still had the problem.
The bigest clue came when I switched this Aiport Express with another one that had been working flawlessly in another room.  It had te same symptoms. Conclusion:  It wasn't the Apple hardware!
I unplugged the audio jack and ethernet cable.  Suddenly the Airport Express was visible to my network.  Next step change the CAT5/6 cable.  That's when I discovered that my ethernet switch was blinking abnormally.  So I removed its power.  Upon restart/reset everything has been working normally for the last three days!
So the lesson learned is that the Airport Express is sensitive to the downstream devices connected to its ethernet port.  I hope this can help someone with troubleshooting in the future. Dont panic!  Check your cables and reset your devices.

I did initially leave it all to do its own thing and the new Airport Utility picture layout appeared to show it all connected up... but that would only last a minute or two before we noticed that the wifi was just gone (the pictures in Utility would change to yellow triangles and say the devices were no longer available.)
Sorry, but I cannot duplicate this error.
When you connect devices using Ethernet, AirPort Utility will display a solid line between the devices.  A dotted line is displayed if the devices are connecting using wireless.

  • E4200 + Dell PowerConnect 2016 Fast Ethernet Switch work/notwork?

We have a Dell™ PowerConnect™ 2016 Fast Ethernet Switch and with the e4200 having only 4 ports a fifth port is needed if we are not able to resolve the usb/printer fiasco that we have been struggling with for the past three days.
Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, PLEASE hlep!
    Thanks,

We have the e4200 v.1 router with four ports in the back and we have updated the usb to network in a xeror 8400 printer via a usb connection. But after three days of trying, only one computer can find the printer on the e4200 router's usb port.
Plan B: give up trying to connect four computers (filling the four ports in the router) to the e4200 usb printer connection and utilize this Dell™ PowerConnect™ 2016 Fast Ethernet Switch which has 16 ports and network in the printer on this dell Ethernet Switch.
BUT, I don't know if this can be done with the e4200 since the CC/Linksys does not appear to be PnP friendly & we don't have the resources to hire in a tech. I can follow instruction, please point me in the right direction. Many thanks if you can assist,
