Ethernet to Apple TV

Is it possible to connect an iMac to Apple TV using an Ethernet cable in order to stream video from the iMac to the Apple TV?

Thanks - do you know how to connect the Apple TV and iMac through a network? Both use the same WiFi which is an Airport Express

Yes, though it is less ideal than what I suggested earlier. You would need to place your AirPort Express in a location approximately midway between your AirPort Extreme Base Station and the TV. Then, using AirPort Utility, configure it to "extend a wireless network".
It may help. Bear in mind the signal thus "extended" by the Express can only be as good as the signal it can receive from the Extreme. That is the reason for selecting its appoximate midway location.
    Read about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
Scroll down to "Wirelessly Extended Network (802.11n)" for a picture.
This solution requires an all-Apple wireless network. No third party stuff.
You mentioned using Ethernet. That would be a better idea. Scroll down to "Roaming Network (Ethernet-connected Wi-Fi base stations)" for a picture. In your case, the longer the Ethernet cable - hence the closer you can move the Express to the TV - the better

  • Airplay over ethernet connected Apple TV does not work

    Hey guys,
    I really appreciate your help!
    So here is my problem:
I cannot use Airplay from my iPad/iPhone or my Macbook (iTunes + AirPlay Mirroring) while the AppleTV connection is via ethernet.
If I disconnect the ethernet cable and activate wifi, there is no problem at all. But I want to use my AppleTV wired due to reasons like stability and performance.
I have a Hitron Router, which is only working as a Modem. My real routing device is an Apple Time-Capsule. It works as a DHCP and NAT. The NAT of the Hitron Router is disabled, it only sends the internet connection and no networking stuff.
Activating/Deactivation of the WMM Box doesn't work for me, because the Time Capsule doesn't provide such settings.
I am sorry for my English.
Hope you guys understand my problem.
    Thanks!

Thank you Rudegar. The problem was that the Time-Capsule did not automatically forward the TCP/UDP Ports to the wired connections or the other way around. For all those who read this thread later and have the same problem. You don't have to change all the TCP/UDP Ports on your own. The Time-Capsule and AirPort Extreme support the NAT Port Mapping Protocol, which automatically does the Port Forwarding.
A small research on Google did the rest, so it was easier than I thought.
Again thank you Rudegar for your answer
    Best regards!

  • Can MoCA Cable Adapters Be Used To Connect Ethernet to Apple TV?

I don't want to run a new 50'-60' ethernet line throughout the house (through the basement), to connect an ethernet line from my 2013 iMac Modem to the Apple TV …. and was wondering if anyone has experience using the newer MoCA cable line adapters for their ethernet extensions?
Below is the MoCA adapter I am considering using:
    ActionTec MoCA Cable/Ethernet Adapter(s)

After talking with others, I'm dropping the whole ActionTec MoCA interest ….
… and going for a simple Ethernet switch device, and running inexpensive Cat6 RJ45 cable from the iMac/Modem location to the Apple TV, across the house. Too much trouble, time consuming, and potential headaches wiring in and justifying the cost of the ActionTec's MoCA adapters. No doubt would have hours of trouble getting the MoCA adapters up and running. Besides, also read some bad reviews on Amazon about ActionTec Tech Support, and ActionTec MoCA adapter reliability over time.
The KeeBox SGE05 5-Port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet Switch (below/at Amazon), should do the trick …. along with picking up about 40'-50' of inexpensive Cat6 RJ45 cable.  I'll just be running it along the same internet cable line TimeWarner put in to my iMac & Internet Modem.
                                               KeeBox SGE05 5-Port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet Switch
                                            http://www.keebox.com/products/productdetail.asp?prod=100_SGE05&cat=80
    http://www.amazon.com/KEEBOX-SGE05-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B004FM58MO/ref=s r_1_14?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1428282923&sr=1-…
Standard Cat6 RJ45 Ethernet Cable (All Colors)
        http://www.amazon.com/Cat6-Networking-Ethernet-Patch-Cable/dp/B00BEX6218/ref=sr_ 1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428283894…
                                                                            Found Everywhere (All Colors)
So for around $25 bucks total, versus $125.00 (+/-) for (2) MoCA Adapters ….. and a 15-30 minutes installing the CAT6 cable along the same TimeWarner Internet cable line from my iMac…. I'd be done!
Sometime "keeping it simple" (KISS) is still the best method.

  • Coaxial to Ethernet to Apple TV

I'm getting my first ever widescreen / HD TV next week. I'd like to get the Apple TV too and go straight from my coaxial outlet into it and avoid wireless altogether.
What will I need to accomplish this? I found this Netgear MCAB1001 MoCA Coax-Ethernet Adapter Kit, but it seems like an expensive option as well as overkill.
    Any ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Steve

I wasn't sure if I could hardwire from the Airport Extreme to my Apple TV and my iMac. It appears that I can so I'm going to give that a try. I was trying to avoid a long cable across the room as I have a coaxial outlet right behind the TV that provides internet and TV. Bob is tight, the Netgear item could have solved this problem for me, but if AE can do it, then might as well do that. It's a minor inconvenience. My house was built in 1995 and things aren't always where I would like them.
The wireless part of my router will service my iPad and guests. I know I can serve the Apple TV with wireless N as well, but I'm determined to hardwire. One of the other reasons is that I do wedding photography and will be having clients over and showing them slideshows, images, etc. I want to make sure there are no hiccups.
Anyway, I think my plan will work.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Ethernet connected Apple TV 3 can't play content.  WiFi works fine.  What gives?

Apple TV 3 has a strange problem since the latest update, 5.1.  It is only partially functional when hard wired to my router, but is fully functional when connected wirelessly.
When hardwired, I can control it with the iOS Remote app, airplay from iPhones & iPad, and browse the menus of the various services, Hulu, Netflix, etc. But, when I try to play content, for example, a  Hulu show, I get a “there was an error…” message.
When I connect wirelessly- everything works fine- I can play all the content without a problem.
I prefer to have a wired connection, and have been using one successfully up until 5.1 – does anyone know how to fix the  limited functionality of the wired connection?

  • Share Internet from Mac thru Ethernet to apple tv

Since the apple tv has no browser I can't login to the secure network at a condo.  Best answer that makes sense is to use my laptop to connect thru wifi then use Ethernet to give Internet to the apple tv.  I can't find the share on the apple laptop. Does any one know where the needle in the haystack to allow the share?

  • Ethernet printer/apple laserwriter question

Hi I was wondering How i can get my macbook pro to connect to my old laserwriter pro 630. I have the asante talk box. Now, how do I put the two together. I have never ever worked with an ethernet printer before! thanks.

You don't need to use an expensive Asante Talk box with this printer as it as built in ethernet. All you need is a cheap AAUI to 10baseT (RJ45) adapter that connects just below the Local Talk port that you are using now. You will connect to this with the ethernet cable instead of the Asante Talk. If you have already set it up with the Asante Talk there are no changes required. You should find that thing print faster using this connection.

  • Can Apple TV ethernet be used like Airport Expess for DirecTV wireless DVR connection to network?

can ethernet on Apple TV support a DirecTV DVR for wireless 'network'/internet connection similarly as Airport Express will?

No. The ATV is not a hub.

  • Use Apple TV to Cut Cable Cord

My wife and I are frustrated by the arrogance and greed of our local cable monopoly and looking at the plusses and minuses of Apple TV using Hulu and various other streaming sources. Dish TV is not an option for a few reasons. Our only cable usage would be for high-speed Internet (they advertise 15 gigs, but we only get about 5).
She and I watch different stuff.  She tapes shows using the TWC-provided DVR so we can FF through commercials. If I want to watch something different when she is watching/taping I go to another TV set.  Our home is fully wired with Ethernet and Apple Express Wi-fi. We’re an all-Apple household two iMacs, one MacBook Air, two iPhones (what else!!!). This scenario brings forth following questions about Apple TV and streaming:
Can streaming video be taped for later viewing and FFing through commercials? Good shows often come on after our bedtime.
Does one tape these to an external hard drive, or….?
If wife is taping or streaming on the principal TV controlled by the Apple TV, can I watch some thing else on another TV simultaneously? If not, what’s the solution?
Maybe many of these hurdles may be overcome by Apple TV-4 and A7 chip, for which we’ll probably wait.
Sage advise greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

AppleTV has no tuner - you watch one thing at a time.  One AppleTV would be needed for each TV.
AppleTV started as a vehicle for playback of iTunes store material, photos and music.  Subsequently in the black models participating 'channels' have been added from various providers however many of these require separate subscriptions to those channel provider's services.
You can rent movies from iTunes or buy them.  TV Shows can only be purchased - rentals were iniotially allowed but no longer.
AppleTv is a mish mash of things these days but it currently has no PVR capability so if you need that it would not be a good option.
Current model has no storage, original did.  Only purchases from iTunes store can be archived by downloading in iTunes.
As far as the streaming services go they vary by country so you need to check exactly what is on offer in your country (US I assume):
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/
You watch the streaming services live - we have fewer in the UK but Netflix for example is rate adaptive so quality is proportional to internet speed - slower speeds get worse quality - I'd imagine you are getting 5Mbps not 15 Mbps (check at speedtest, net in a browser).

  • Apple TV & Time Capsule's Hard Drive Used for iTunes Media Only !

I would like to use the Time Capsule Hard Drive just for my iTunes. Not Time Machine. Time Capsule will be my Wireless Base Station (router) as well. But I'm going to plug my Mac Mini into the Time Capsule via Gigabit Ethernet. Will this work & how well (fast) will it stream the media from my iTunes to the Apple TV? I'm not synching any files on the Apple TV's Hard Drive. All Video & Music will be streaming! I know this is not what Time Capsule was intended for, but will it work & again, how well will it stream ? Is there a downside to setting it up this way ? Also, I'm not buying any Movies from the iTunes store. Thanks in advance!

OK, so having my Mac & TC hardwired by Ethernet, is like having the Hard Drive inside the TC hard wired to my Mac? Correct ? I'm sorry to repeat myself but I'm just trying to understand all this. I'm bad with Networking! So you think I should be streaming OK even with watching a movie I have in iTunes (which lives on the TC Internal Hard Drive) on my Apple TV? My Apple TV will be used Wirelessly. No Ethernet to Apple TV. Again, I appreciate the help. I don't want to buy it & find I can't do what I want. B&H in NY have the older TC 500 GB Model for $199.95 And I have a crappy router currently. So I figure I can kill 2 birds with one stone.( I love Birds. It's just an expression! If it works, it would be ideal for my situation.

  • I have a iMac g4 swivel and it seems that the ethernet port and the optical drive are not working.

Is there any troubleshooting I can try, short of replacing everything?
I really love this version of the iMac and want to use it in place of my eMac for some home business inventory and printing work.
I need the ethernet to work because the printer can only connect that way.  It's a great laserjet from HP (1998 version) and it works like a champ.
As for the disc drive... I would love to install office or iwork but as I said nothing seems to mount.  I also can't upgrade it to Tiger.  It's running Panther and I can live with that I suppose.
I have wondered if I could exchange parts from the eMac (Motherboard, Optical Drive, Hard Drive) since  its bulkyness takes up so much room.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
And yes I have a modern macbook pro as well.

You can use the dvd drive on your macbook via target disk  mode.

    1) Do you have a router?  Do you communicate to the internet via wifi?
connect the printer to a router with an ethernet port. This will be an input eithernet port.
You may need to change ip addresses on your printer or on your network.
    2) usb to ethernet dongle
Apple USB EN Adapter Network adapter - Hi-Speed USB

verify that the dongle will work on your machine.  Any drivers needed?
    3) You can firewire to for TCP/IP ( ethernet) to comunicate between macs.  Connect your printer to your macbook. Use firewire to communicate between macs.  Enable printer sharing.

  • Apple TV2 periodically stops playing audio

    Hi
I have had an annoying problem with my Apple TV2 after upgrading to the latest firmware (6.0). When streaming video content from my MacMini Server (via ethernet) the Apple TV periodically stops playing the audio while the movie keeps playing without audio. I can solve the problem by pausing and then continuing the movie, which will bring back the audio.
I have tried to restore and reinstall the firmware (6.0) via the Apple TV because I also had problems with the Apple TV stuttering when streaming content from my MacMini, but the reinstallation of firmware did not solved the issue.
I don't know if this is somehow related to the issue, but after having updated to firmware 6.0 Netflix often ask me for my login credetials on the Apple TV. This is an issue that I also never experienced before upgrading the firmware.
    What to do now?
    Thanks...

So it's been a few months since I saw this thread started, and I am still having the same issues as above with my Apple TV 3. I can go a day or two and at some point, all connections just seem to error out. HBO go, Netflix, me streaming from my ipad, etc.   thought they would have been addressed by now.
I have to hard reboot (power plug only) in order for it to go back to normal.
I know it's a hardware issue as I have an Apple TV 2 setup in another room and it never gives me an issue,
The weird thing is, I have the exact same setup at my office as well.  An Apple TV 3 in the main conf. Area and an Apple TV 2 in our break area. Same issue - Apple TV 3 needs hard (pore Plug) reset every few days and the Apple TV 2 in the break room is rock solid for months.
Both Apple TV 3 units are at most recent 6.1 software release.
Anyone have any ideas?  Think I a just going to put my Apple TV 3's aside for a while and use the 2's until it gets worked out.
