Ethernet to wireless bridge trouble

I am trying to connect my iMac G3 (slot loading) to my wireless internet connection through airport express (the device that is plugged into wall, not the airport card that is placed inside the computer). The computer used to recognize the device but now it doesn't. How can I fix this? Also, what is the set up process to have the wireless connection working on the computer via airport to ethernet?

I finally got all the ethernet settings configured correctly, with the help and advice of various Mac user forums. I had to manually set the Mac's IP address to a static setting, use it to configure the ethernet bridge, then reset both to accept a network-assigned DHCP IP address. Linksys did not include any of these details in their support documentation, but the answers are out there...

  • Using TC as ethernet to wireless bridge

I have an existing Airport Extreme base (connects to internet) and AppleTV (wireless) on the (n) network. Now I've got the TC added to the mix and wirelessly, everything appears to run fine after using "Extend network" settings between the 2 devices.
I connected my iMac to an ethernet port on the new TC with intentions of speeding up connection from iMac to AppleTV (my iMac doesn't have (n) card). iMac gets an IP address assigned from AE DHCP server and it sees DNS server from Comcast, but I can't actually resolve anything. I tested a few things to no avail:
    1. Only way to connect to the TC directly seems to be wireless. I know I can turn off "wireless" on the TC settings, but that defeats the point of what I'm trying to do.
    2. With iMac Airport disabled, I can't get to internet but I still have my IP settings from DHCP.
Does someone with more Airport (n) network knowledge know what I need to do? I read through the suggested network configs but nothing addresses this directly that I've found.
    Thanks - JD

OK, TC users. I've tested a few things and the ethernet connection is working fine. While my Airport is disabled and I'm connected to the ethernet, I can see the local wireless devices just fine (AE base). So, that shows that I can talk through the wireless connection while my Mac is only connected to the ethernet port of the TC (which is talking to the AE base).
I am obtaining a good IP address which is given by the AE base DHCP. But I can't get out of the house... is there some sort of firewall that I'm overlooking?
The whole purpose is to speed up my connection from my iMac to my TV so it's completely using the (N) protocol.
    Anyone?

  • Airport Express - Ethernet to Wireless Bridge

I use an Airport Express to create a wireless network in my university halls from the ethernet port in the wall. All of my apple devices can connect without problems, however whenever a Windows computer connects it can successfully join the network but only local only, it can never reach the internet. Is there any way to solve this problem!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Check the firewall settings on your Windows computer. You really need to post in a Windows forum for your operating system, as your AirPort Express is working fine and there are no other adjustments on the Express that you could make.

  • Is it possible to setup AirPort Express as Wireless Bridge but won't allow wifi access through it?

What I want to do is connect a printer to the AirPort Express through it's ethernet and wirelessly bridge to my main router (AirPort Extreme). But is it possible to turn off the AirPort Express' wifi access? Meaning it's wifi is solely used for bridging to my main router and block off other devices access to it through it's wifi? The only solution I can think of is giving the AirPort Express a different name and password, but is there a better way of doing it?

What I want to do is connect a printer to the AirPort Express through it's ethernet and wirelessly bridge to my main router
That is possible, assuming that the AirPort Express will be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal.
But is it possible to turn off the AirPort Express' wifi access? Meaning it's wifi is solely used for bridging to my main router and block off other devices access to it through it's wifi?
Configure the AirPort Express to "join a wireless network".....not "extend a wireless network"..... and it will provide no additional wireless signal coverage.
The only solution I can think of is giving the AirPort Express a different name and password,
That won't work, since the AirPort Express must be configured to connect to the AirPort Extreme wireless network using the same name and same password as the main network.

  • Trouble with wireless bridge......

I am having extreme difficulty setting up Cisco Aironet 1310 series devices. here is an overview:
We have our main network with an ip scheme of 10.1.1.0/24 on one side and an office across the street that is on 10.1.2.0/24.
I want to connect these 2 networks via wireless bridge. We do have a PTP T1 between the 2 sites that is used to carry VoIP traffic and data, but I want the data moved to the wirless bridges.
I put the bridges on their own network of 192.168.1.0/28 and I am using 2 switches with their own VLANS on the same network as the bridges.
No matter what I try, I can't get traffic to flow properly.
does anyone have any suggestions or can they point me in the right direction. It is driving me crazy!
thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the response.
AP's are running in "root" and "non-root" mode and they are able to talk to each other ok. Just can't get the traffic to flow from point A to B (the main network, through the wireless bridges, over to the remote network and back again), then back from B to A. The traffic either loops or bounces back and forth between the firewall and the switches. I suspect I need t tweak the gateways on each of AP's as well.
Right now, the gateways are set to point to the VLAN set on the switch of the opposite side. This way, traffic hits the AP and is forwarded through to the opposite VLAN.
I am using seperate VLAN's to seperate the traffic but have not tried to associate with a specific SSID as of yet.

  • Trouble getting Dlink DWL-G820 wireless bridge to work with wrt610n

I'm trying to get some dlink wireless bridges to work with wrt610n, but not having any luck.  I left Wrt610n router with default "192.168.1.1" IP address and configured bridges accordingly with "192.168.1.xxx" adresses.
Wireless bridges not happy.  Any ideas ?  The bridges were working fine when i was using "192.168.0.xxx" ip addresses with wrt610n
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well I'll give you full points for reading my question, but zero points for quality of answer.  If it was that simple I would have done it.
Unfortunately circumstances have changed and I have both a 192.168.0.xxx LAN & 192.168.1.xxx LAN now and the DWL-G820 (Dlink) wireless bridges must be part of the 192.168.1.xxx LAN (WRT610N Linksys router).  For some reason they won't work when I configure them to be part of a 192.168.1.xxx LAN.
I'm beginning to think it's a diabolical plot by either Linksys or Dlink to prevent each other's equipment from working together.

  • Configure wireless bridge

Does anyone have any advice on how to configure a linksys wireless bridge? The set up manual is no help and I am using an Airport Express to create a wireless network. I would like to configure my wireless bridge so I can get internet on my PS2. I have tried plugging it into the ethernet port on my imac to set it up, but the default IP does not come up in Safari. Please let me know if you have any advice. Thank you.

If you cannot connect to the Linksys device by Ethernet cable, it may be because your computer is configured to a different subnet than that of the Linksys device.
I have a Linksys WGA600N gaming adapter and have no trouble configuring it as an Ethernet converter.

  • Setting up a netgear n300 as wireless bridge/access point with airport extremee

I just replaced my netgear wireless router with the airport to allow our many devices on the network without knocking each other off and also increase the speed.  But would like to use the netgear as a wireless bridge or access point so that I can still connect my NTFS formatted hard drive to be shared on the network.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I can not seem to find my netgear router with 192.168.1.1 as that comes up with another device.  I have tried doing this with a windows laptop in another room but can not seem to make it work.  I am now hooked up directly to the airport thinking i need to do it that way and still no luck. Please help.

As long as you intend to do this over ethernet it will work.. you cannot easily wireless repeat or bridge to an apple router.. you would need specific hardware to do it.
What is the exact model of netgear you have?
The setup method depends on the functionality of the router.. but lets assume it does not have a bridge or WAP mode.
    You use WAN bypass.
    1. Setup the Netgear with IP address in the correct IP range for the rest of the network.. it is hard to talk generalities so lets say the apple is main router and your network is now 10.0.1.x .. then set the Netgear to 10.0.1.250 (apple uses IP 2-200 by default) you can use any value you like outside the DHCP range. Up to the limit which is 254 as long as you keep track of all static IP devices. Apply this setting and power cycle the router.. and you might need to power cycle the computer as well to pick up the new IP.
    2. Turn off the DHCP server in the Netgear. You may lose connection to the netgear now.. do not worry about it.. (this can be combined with one.. if you firstly turn off dhcp before you change the IP.. but whatever is possible.. at some point you will need to change around and if you forget what IP .. you will be in a mess.. so write it on a label and stick on the base of the router.. also without dhcp you will either need to reset router to factory using reset button or use static ip on the computer. )
    3. Plug ethernet from LAN of the main router to LAN of the Netgear. Reboot the whole network is often necessary.
    4. In your computer plugged somewhere in the network.. open browser and go to the address you set.. 10.0.1.250 in my example.
    5. You can then setup the Netgear to do whatever you like.. DIsk access is fine.. wireless is fine.. it just cannot be a router.
Many many reboots if you get lost. Hit reset and start over.

  • Using the Mac as a wireless Bridge for the Xbox 360

Want to use your Mac essentially as a wireless adapter for an Xbox 360 or any console? plug in the ethernet cable between the two devices and follow the setup process!
    Wireless Bridge setup process
    1. Open system Preferences.
    2. Clisk sharing, then the internet tab and select Airport as the “share your connection from” then select the Built-in Ethernet in the list.
    3. Open up the terminal Application and type ifconfig en0 in the window it sohuld display an outcome like this
    ifconfig en0
    en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255
    ether 00:16:cb:cc:80:aa
    media: autoselect status: inactive
    supported media: autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,flow-control> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <full-duplex,flow-control> 1000baseT <full-duplex> 1000baseT <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control> none
    4. This gives you the information of what your computer’s IP address is. On the xbox dashboard in the network setup screen select manual and select the top section which contains the IP address, subnet mask, and Gateway address, for the IP address, input the Highlighted section above plus one, so its 192.168.2.1 (this is for standard configurations, again, just add one to the last digit of your IP address.
    5. Open Airport Admin Utility, the select configure on your airport. Then select the Internet tab This will give you your subnet Mask, input accordingly.
    6. For the Gateway address, you are going to put in the value in the blue box. This is because you are using your Computer as a gateway, therefor you need to tap into its connection.
So For the Average setup you will use:
    IP Address: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway Address: 192.168.2.1
    7. Now for the DNS server, this varies according to What internet service you have, but, Airport admin utility provides the answer, right below the information we used above, you will see DNS Server. viola! Put that in as your primary DNS server in the second box of edit options in the network menu.
Now you should be complete, test the connection and you should be Ready to Go!! Happy Gaming!

    Welcome to the discussions, DanSwiggsD!
If you have a non-Apple device as your main router, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme has almost no chance of compatibility with your main router.
If you do have an Apple router as your main device, please post back with your model number and we'll let you know how your devices should be configured.
If you don't have an Apple device as your main router you have a few options to connect the xbox:
    1) A pair of ethernet powerline adapters could be used if you did not want to run a regular ethernet cable from your main router to the xbox.
    2) The new AirPort Express 802.11n model does have a feature called Proxy STA which should allow it to receive a wireless signal from any wireless router and allow the ethernet port to be enabled.

  • Multipmultiple Airport Extreme Base Stations: WDS Or "Extend Wireless Network" To Have Wired -- Wireless Bridge?

    Hello there!
I've been looking for this info, but have as yet been unable to find it. Here's my scenario:
I have two Airport Extreme Base Stations (both are dual band) and 3 airport expresses. The main internet connection in my house is in one room, where I have an AEBS as the main wireless router. In another room, I have a bunch of ethernet-only devices. I'd like to use the 2nd AEBS in this room, plug the ethernet devices into it and have the 2nd AEBS act as a wired <--> wireless bridge (connected to the same wireless network as the 1st AEBS). I've attempted this via "extend a wireless network," but the ethernet devices don't get past the AEBS they're plugged into. Should I instead be implementing WDS?
I mention the airport expresses as I'd like to have airtunes & wireless signal in other areas, but would like to keep the set-up as simple as possible (i.e., not config the AXes for WDS unless it's required).
Thanks in advance for any help!

Unlike the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) cannot be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge.
However, there are at least two ways to configure it to provide wired clients access:
Connect the second AEBSn back to the first by Ethernet; reconfigure the second AEBSn as a bridge and disable its wireless radios, or
Reconfigure both AEBSns into an extended wireless network. For 802.11n AirPorts, this would be called a dynamic WDS. The AEBSn, connected to the Internet would be the "main" base station and it would only require that you enable the "Allow this network to be extended" option in the AirPort Utility. The extending AEBSn would need to be configured with the option, Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network, enabled.
In both configurations, the second AEBSn's Ethernet ports would be enabled for wired clients.

  • Can I use a WRT54GX2 as wireless bridge for my Blue Ray to an E1000 wireless router?

I recently replaced my WRT54GX2 router with an E1000 for networking in my home.  I now have a Blu-Ray disk player, and thought I may be able to use the old WRT54GX2 to wirelessly bridge a network connection for the Blu-Ray.  I am having trouble fignuring out how to configure it, if possible at all.  Any help would be appreciated

A WRT and a E1000 are wireless routers, i.e. router with an integrated wireless access points. They accept client connections. They don't connect to other access points. They always require a wired connection to your main network.
Running a wire is the best solution anyway, in particular for video streaming and similar.

  • Wireless bridge from hotspot to router

Hi I recently moved into a new building that has some hotspots for Internet connection which is included in the rent price. I have a linksys Cisco wireless-G Broadband router model no. WRT54G2 V1 and I am trying to create a wireless bridge between the hotspot (I have my own Unique Internet identifier) to the router, which is then connected to my desktop using an Ethernet wire.
Can I create a wireless bridge, if yes, how do I do this?
    Thanks in advance

The router (WRT54G2 V1) does not have a wireless receiver capability so you will need a separate ethernet bridge.
Your setup should be like this:
    (((Wireless connection)))--->(((Ethernet bridge<-wired connection->Linksys router<-wired connection->Desktop computer
I hope that makes sense. XD

  • Problem configuring wireless bridge

Don't know of this is the right forum, but no doubt someone will put me right if it isnt...
I'm trying to get my son's hand-me-down G4 Powermac on to our home's wireless network. I bought a Belkin wireless bridge. I can log in to the router, select it and provide the encryption details. The network panel tells me I am connected to the internet via Ethernet, green light. But Safari tells me I am not connected to the internet. I'm using manual config, with the bridge's IP address and quoted Subnet mask. But if I try to enter the router's IP address, I get a message saying that address is not in this computer's subnet. I've got two other macs using the network, so I don't understand why this should be so tricky?
What do I need to do to make the router part of this computer's subnet??!

Specifically, it's an F5D7330. I had it in the box for about a year while the missus and me dithered about whether the boy should have his own web access, but he's 16 now and keeps doing his homework on the house Mac when we want to read about the latest banking collapse...
So I connect the bridge up, switch it on and use a browser to access the bridge's setup menu. It sees our router and i set the encryption.
Then I go to the Ethernet window in Network Preferences on the G4 (an old 450dp, running 10.4.11) and set Config IPv4 to Manual. I type in the IP address as instructed in the bridge startup guide, 192.168.2.201, and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. At this stage when I check the network status it's showing a green light and tells me I'm connected to the internet via Ethernet, IP address as just typed in. But Safari tells me I'm not connected to the Internet. If I go to the troubleshooting link on the Safari page, it shows green lights for the top two, ISP (the middle one) is slowly alternating green and red, and the bottom two options are red.
So I think that maybe I should enter the router's IP address where prompted in the network prefs - 192.168.0.1 - but when I do this I get a message saying that this address isn't part of the computer's subnet.
I'm afraid I was on the outer limits of my knowledge when I was accessing the Bridge's setup menu. I don't really know much about IP addresses, I am merely obeying orders. All this talk of subnets and such has me completely baffled. But it can't be that hard, surely?
I suppose my question is, do I have to change the IP address of my son's G4 to link to the router, which is already talking to two other Macs in the house? And if so, could someone very kindly suggest how to do it and what it should be! Or if not, I'd be really grateful if someone could explain in simple terms what the problem might be and how I might correct the issue.
I did try the Belkin site but it was a long way short of helpful. Hope someone can help out.
    Thanks

  • Wireless bridge

Hi all, I have an older FieldPoint  FP-1600 controller with a few
modules that works fine over my ethernet.  The problem is that I
must now move it to another room without a hardwired ethernet
connection.  The room can see the wireless LAN though.  So, I
plan to purchase a Wireless Ethernet Bridge to plug into the RJ-45
socket of my FP-1600 to connect via the wirless LAN.  My questions
are:  Is it that simple?  Could anyone suggest a good
    wireless bridge to buy?

I don't know about that adapter, but as was said in the other thread, we use simple Edimax APs and they work fine (and don't cost $700  ). Presumably, any other standard equipment should work fine - a wi-fi connection replaces the hardware layer but not the software layer of TCP\IP, so there shouldn't be any difference between using a wi-fi network and a LAN (as long as you have everything set up properly).
Try to take over the world!

  • Wireless Bridge no longer reachable

The mac-address for the BVI on the wireless bridge is not attaching itself to the interface on the 6513 switch.  We recently changed the vlans at the campus.  At first I thought I had a vtp pruning problem but ended up being a spanning-tree problem.  This got fixed yesterday.  Everything worked fine until this morning. Now I can't even ping the WAP.  There are 2 vlans on the bridge.  The other vlan has 3 mac-addresses attached at the interface.  My BVI on the management vlan is not.  I have tried resetting the port and even moving the cable to a different port.  I still get nothing.  When I do a show arp on the switch that does the routing for the school I get the mac-address but when I do the show mac-address-table I get nothing.  When I console in on the WAP I can't ping out from it.
I attached the bridge config on both sides.  The one I am trying to get to has the BVI 1 ip address 10.60.0.222.
When I check the interface to both the 6513 and the WAP both show up and up.  And there are packets being sent over on that native vlan. But I think this is only because of the connection to the other side.  It does show that both sides of the bridge are connected.
    Any ideas?

I had to replace both WAP to recreate the bridge.  Whatever was going on with the other 2 I don't know.  I send ping and telnet traffic on my management vlan.
I am trying to send traffic on 3 other vlans but no success.  A computer connected to one of these vlans can't even ping its default gateway even though it did get an IP from the DHCP server.  The dot11radio0 sub interfaces are configured for each of the vlans and so is the fast ethernet sub interfaces on both sides.  The vlans are allowed on the trunk.
When consoled into the switch I can ping the default gateways of each of the vlans.
Here is the config on both sides:
