Ethernet to wireless computer-too simple a solution?
Problem: old G3 iMac with Airport card gets great signal (15/15 pips) from AEBS. Next to it, newer iMac G5 with Airport card gets horrible signal (don't ask- hours of phone support and at Apple repair fail to find the problem- a problem featured in another post). Apple repair sending back G5 without a solution, and it is unuseable due to it's poor AEBS reception. Wife and kids very unhappy. Myself unhappy.
Question: Since the G3 gets such a great signal, could I just plug the two together w/Ethernet, so that the G5 gets it's signal from the G3? If so, does the G3 need to be awake (vs asleep, as the aging beast often is like an old cat)? What settings in Preference panels for both to set? Or should I bite the bullet and get another AEBS or Express to boost the signal. Thanks in advance,

No work out why the iMac G5 is getting a poor signal, if the G3 can get a good signal, then it is not a signal issue.

Mystery: Wired computer connected to E3000 invisible to wireless computer connections
I have a primary computer connected by Ethernet to a new E3000 router and 3 computers by wireless connections, with all computers on Windows 7. The primary computer has Windows 7, 64 bit. The issue is that the primary computer wired to the E3000 can see the wireless connections, but none of the wireless computers can see it. Each of the 3 wireless computer can see the others, but none can see the primary computer connected to the router. But the primary computer connected to the router does show all 4 computers in the network.
Additionally, all computers are in a Windows 7 Home Group.

Updating my previous post, I stumbled upon the solution to my problem. In working with Home Group, I discovered that if the files or folders are not setup properly to share, then the computer will not be seen in the Home Group or Network Folders.
So, I had to right-click on the folders I wanted to share and select the 'Share with' option, which opens a list of sharing options to choose. This action completed makes all of the computers visible in the Home Group and Network folders.
This is a little tricky step with Home Group. During the initial setup of a Home Group, choices of what to share are made then too. But it does not work until the actual assignment of files or folders is made, as described above.
It was a great learning experience, and now works perfectly. Thanks for helping to gain insight. -
BUG: Mail (GMAIL IMAP) no longer connects over ethernet, only wireless
I too was puzzled last night when I couldn't get my gmail account to go online. I did a lot of reading, and tried various things (to no avail), but ultimately decided it was just a configuration error, or combination of other programs running...or maybe even (as read in other posts) Google's servers. I found the server problem unlikely though, since I could also log in via the web interface.
Mysteriously, opening Mail on a separate MBP over either ethernet or wireless was 100% normal...as was the imap connection on my iPad via 3G or wireless...so what was causing my brand new MBAir to choke? Sleep on it, I said to myself.
Well here I am on day 2 of Mail refusing to connect. Connection doctor always shows 'green' next to connection status (Mail was able to connect to the internet), but red for both imap and smtp servers, with messages reading "Mail could not connect to this IMAP/SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in Account preferences. Also verify the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the 'Use SSL' checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."
I've eliminated the server issue, because my MBP still opened Mail just fine while connected to my network here at home.
Then, just for fun, I decided to unplug my ethernet (which is attached via Apple's own USB Ethernet adapter), and turn on my wireless. Almost instantly, Mail popped to life on my MBAir, and started syncing with gmail/IMAP.
In the two months I have owned this MBAir, getting Mail to work over ethernet had never been a problem. My issues seemed to parallel the recent influx of problems reported with gmail & IMAP.
I still cannot get Mail to access gmail over the USB Ethernet Adapter. What gives, Apple? Anyone else experiencing these symptoms on these new MBAirs?

I had a SOCKS proxy enabled on my Ethernet for when I take this laptop on the road...I used it to connect securely to my server back home. Obviously at home my SOCKS proxy was not connecting from within my private network. As soon as I removed the SOCKS proxy, voilá! GMAIL IMAP works perfectly over the USB Ethernet adapter once again.
I hope this serves as a reminder to thoroughly check your network settings before driving yourself mad!

Boy, you are not kidding, I was running both the cloud and CS6, and I was ready to throw in the towel.
I have changed computer's twice now, have a solid state hd, (which I love) with 10 terabytes on externals, I run NOTHING except adobe's stuff on my HD now, and only one version of it, and it runs like a dream.
So, I updated the OS to win 8.1, updated my peripherals,
I dumped CS6 (hated to, but for some reason my 3D won't work on it, it works fine with the cloud) but in CS6 the software was turning it off after adobe's last update.
I've made a virtual machine for my development environments which do not play well with adobe's stuff.
My rule of thumb has always been double what the manufacturer states is required for RAM, but imho, with my current upgrades: upgraded to win8.1, and other peripherals, spent two weeks changing stuff over and it's about 100 times better than trying to run CC and CS6. - No kidding, the change is astronomical
But for anything PC I'm way over powered, and for Adobe, I'm still underpowered.
Next, I'll just get a mac for Adobe, and stick with my pc's for ms/CentOS. Too, it seems like since the cloud was initiated Adobe is rolling out the updates faster and changes without warning. The processor/3D issue, I had no warning on it, just woke up one day and "no more 3d" :S
But I do love the cloud, so, guess there's got to be some dark lining to it. <g> -
How Do I Network Multiple Base Stations Using Ethernet AND Wireless?
Hi, everyone. I am having great difficulty setting up a network using multiple Airport Extreme base stations that are connected using both ethernet and wireless connections. I have one main base station connected to a cable modem, and I want to create a unified network and share its internet connection with three other base stations: one that is connected on an ethernet network, one connected to it wirelessly, and the fourth that would be connected wirelessly to the base station on the ethernet network.
The "Designing Airport Networks" manual explains how to build roaming networks of base stations that are connected to one another via ethernet. And it also explains how to build a WDS of wirelessly connected base stations. What it doesn't explain is how to build a network employing both ethernet AND wireless!
I spent most of today trying to get the base stations to work in various configurations to no avail. I could get part of the network working, but not all of it. I'm at the point where I'm going to need to do a hard, factory reset on all the base stations and start over, but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for me. Any help would be incredibly appreciated! Thanks so much...

Same SSID (network name).
Different channels. As far apart as possible.
Same wireless encryption type/level/password.
Only the base station connected to the Internet source distributes IP addresses. All the others are configured as bridges.
If you have stations connected wirelessly using WDS and want them to appear as a single seamless wireless network, configure them as follows:
Same SSID (network name).
Same channel.
Same wireless encryption type/level/password.
It appears that you want to mix the 2 type of connections. This is easily done and here is a simple example:
base1 Ethernet base2
In this example base1 and base 2 are configured as I suggested above for Ethernet connections.
Now add base3 connected wirelessly:
base1 Ethernet base2 wireless base3
Now base2's configuration must be modified slightly so that it acts as a WDS main. base3 is configured to act as a WDS remote (or relay).
No changes are needed to base1 since it is completely unaware and uninvolved in the WDS link between base2 and base3. -
Arch is so simple it defies bugginess!! I haven't had to do anything but run pacman -Syu to maintain this thing for the past year!! What is the world coming too???

Both ethernet and wireless time-out trying to connect
I'm having a problem with getting my laptops' IP assigned by dhcp. Both over ethernet and wireless.
I have no problem connecting to my WPA connection at home, but now I'm at my parents for a week or two, it refuses to connect to their WEP network.
To connect to my WPA network I run this script from rc.local, which works fine on startup.

iwconfig ra0 mode Managed

So for the WEP network, I have commented all that out and changed rc.conf like so:

INTERFACES=(lo eth0 ra0)

But when I try to connect it just returns "Error, ra0: timed out".
I have also tried modifying rc.local (appropriately i think), but that seems to time-out too.
This wouldn't be so bad if I had the option to connect by ethernet, but that doesnt work either! It also times out, just like the wireless. I don't think it is the router, as all the other computers in the house work fine, both wired and wireless. But I don't think it's a driver issue either, as I can see all the AP's in kismet, and also I used the ethernet port when I first installed Arch a couple of months ago. I assume it's dodgy config files or clashing commands or something, but I've looked in the wiki and other forums etc, and I can't see what I'm doing wrong.
Any help would be very appreciated.

PaulMake sure about the addresses for the LAN the router at your parents is using - they are not necessarily the same.

Just purchased and installed a J6480. My computers run on Windows XP in a home Ethernet network to which I have added a wireless router as an access point (routers and access points are all Linksys). I was able to configure separate USB, Ethernet and Wireless connections to the J6480 with no problem (some speedbumps, but I sorted through them). Question is this: can the J6480 support both Ethernet and Wireless connections simultaneously? My old HP 5880 Deskjet does, and with the J6480 I would like still to be able to print from non-wireless computers via the Ethernet connection and from wireless computers using the wireless connection without having to unplug the Ethernet cable each time. Is there a solution to do this on the J6480?
Only one adapter can be live at one time (wired taking precedence).

Message Edited by AceH on 03-11-2008 07:03 AMGenerally speaking, the answer is no, you do not need to turn off the computer. However, you must be careful when you do the switch from wireless to wired, and vice versa.
Obviously, you do not want to do the switch in the middle of a data transfer. So if you are downloading a file, or webpage, allow that process to complete. Also, when you do not want to use wireless, switch it off - most computers have either a mechanical switch, or a keyboard toggle, that should allow you to turn off the wireless.
Do not try to use both wired and wireless at the same time. For example, if you are using wired, unplug it first, then switch on the wireless card. To reverse the process, switch off the wireless card first, then plug in the ethernet wire.

WRT54G no internet conn through wireless computer
Hi, I own 2 computers.One is plugged straight in to the router, the other is wireless. All was fine until i either uninstalled somthing on my wireless computer (not sure). I pressed the button on the left of the router until it blinked white then let it search for wireless connection. It found the computer but when I look at the connection it says Im connected to the router but not to the internet. The Cisco systems button is solid white now and I beleive it used to be orange. My wired computer connects fine. The wireless computer has an X saying no network conn. I dont know if its the router or computer. I did a run, cmd, ipconfig and it says somthing like no media or somthing and doesnt give me an IP address. I think this where Im having my trouble but dont know how to fix it. I cant release and re assign an adress. It wont let me. Please help
MickThe problem was DUE to you accidentally pressing the CISCO button. That is actually called the SES button whose function is create a randomly generated wireless network with a randomly generated wireless password or key... if this is white... this means it's active and that your previous wireless network name and settings whatever they were, are gone and replaced with randomly generated ones.
Solution here can be using a PC hardwired to the router and with this PC, edit the newly made wireless settings back into your previous wireless settings. To do that, open up internet explorer and type on the address bar the numbers 192.168.1.1 (username just leave it blank, password as a default is admin)... then go to the wireless tab and edit all the necessary settings there... -

At 60 years of age and totally challenged by todays technology I find it impossible to understand i-tunes Version 11. Don' ask me to try to try go back to a earlier version ( as much as I would like to). I have read some of the advice given, as well as intended as it is, I don't understand the process. I don't want to drop i-tune but I will. I am sure my library is not as large as many others who use it but it is just as important to me. This really saddens me.
I do have two question if some one can help me. First, someone mentioned that if I go to previous restore point this might correct it. Yes or no? Secondly, if Apple can offer us a new version to download why can't they offer an older version to download. Too simple or impossible to do.You can still drag and drop a song into a Playlist, in the same manner as before. Simply use the left-click of your mouse to select-and-hold the song (left-click-and-hold, don't release the click) and drag it to and then drop it (release the click) into the Playlist you want. (You cannot drop it into a Smart Playlist, you can only drop it into a Regular Playlist.)
... and here's a screenshot dragging the song "Lazy Orbit" into the Regular Playlist "Sat 4th June 2011". A small + symbol also appears in the drag, but it doesn't show up on screenshots. If the move is forbidden, a red slash through a red circle appears instead of the + symbol.
As for the Albums thing; in the Column Browser, right-click anywhere in the Column Browser header (see my screenshots in my previous post) and a menu appears. Deselect Albums on that menu to remove Albums from the upper Columns:
... and for the columns underneath (with the songs list etc.), right-click on that header bar and once again, deselect Albums from the menu that appears. The Albums column will then be removed from the lower columns list.

My wireless computer unable to print to hardwired hp officejet pro 8500a plus
My wireless computer is running window Vista home.
1. I have tried to print from several programs and have resulted in a print error in the printer que.
2. I have gone into the printer properties and verified the correct IP address and driver are installed.
3. Attempted to send a test page from the properties window, same result.
4. Uninstalled and Reinstalled the printer software and drivers from the CD. It prints one time than, same results.
5. The printer is directly connected the wireless router and is connected the the HP service.
