Ethernet Unplugged

I just bought a Airport Express 802.11n today. I originally had a AE 802.11g and works fine. I set it up as per the flimsy manual and it says Ethernet Unplugged. So I tried another ethernet cable, again same thing. I tried a new one and again. All cables work with my old airport so I have ruled out the cables.
I have factory reset it, reset it, changed all settings as per previous threads and nothing works at all. And after 5 hours its **** frustrating to see that this thing doesent work. I am suspecting I have a dud AE. Has anyone else had the same issues? Or should I take it back and get a replacement?

I tried it but again didnt work. Aghhh!!! My friend brought over his Airport Express 802.11n and it worked fine. I tested the speeds in bedroom and was slightly faster than the 802.11g, however I decided to take it back to the store. The guy asked if I wanted to swap or return so I returned it cause I was afraid I would spend another 6 hours tonight to fix it up... Little reasearch and I found out that I could get a Netcomm NP800n router which is 802.11n. Its $50 cheaper than Airport Express.
It took 5 mins to set up. I cant believe it was much faster and easier than Airport.
After tests this this is lightning fast and much faster than my friends Airport Express 802.11n.
So anyone who has had major issues if you dont want the printing function or AirTunes then go for the NetComm. Its cheaper, easier and so fast.

  • Airport Express "ethernet unplugged"

My airport express was working fine. Now has blinking yellow light. Airport utility says "ethernet unplugged". I verified that the AE is plugged into a working ethernet cable from my router by unplugging the AE and plugging a laptop into the same cable and verifying that my laptop is then connected.
Tried resetting the AE (by pressing the little recessed button). Reconfigured, but same problem. AE firmware is 6.3. iMac is running Leopard with all SW updates applied. Ideas?

It appears that the communication between the modem and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is "broken."
Try the following, in order, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Why does my AE say ethernet unplugged and flashing amber

My Airport Express has been working fine for several years until today.  It is flashing amber and saying "Ethernet unplugged".  This unit has been operating purely wirelessly without a connection to an ethernet cable since I installed it.  I have used it with Airtunes.
I have a second AE, with the same configuration as the now failed AE, connected to a printer and it is also not connected to an Ethernet cable, and it is operating just fine.  When I go to th configuration file in Airport Utility for the second AE and selece the Internet icon, the Connect Using drop down selection reads Wireless Network and is grayed out.
When I do this with the failed AE, it does not even give me the option under Connect Using of Wireless Network.   The only choices are Ethernet Cable or PpOe.
I have done a hard reset and have not had any luck with it.
Anyone have any ideas.  I have a feeling my only option is to go buy a new one.
    Thank you!

At this point, I would suggest performing a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express in question. Note: You may have to perform this a few time to get it to "stick."
If after the reset(s), the base station is still performing as you have described, it may have failed.

  • Ethernet Unplugged - AEBS voltage problems?

I've been having a problem for several weeks. Suddenly my Aiport Extreme started flashing yellow and saying "Ethernet Unplugged". I did all the reading anyone else had, tried a bunch of stuff and concluded my Ethernet port was fried. Here's what I've discovered.
It turns out that there is some kind of voltage issue on the WAN side of my equation. I bought a second Airport Extreme, thinking my WAN port was smoked. When I plugged the WAN wire into the new Extreme, everything worked. Old Extreme, I get Ethernet Unplugged. Worked for about a week on the new one, then I rebooted the new Extreme and kaput, nothing works. So ...
    1) I tested the WAN connection to my Macbook - works great. I go out to the Internet no problem.
    2) If I take a Dlink router, plug the WAN into that, plug another wire from the DLink to Extreme WAN, Airport is happy. Old Extreme ... same thing. Both are fine.
There is a specific sensitivity (voltage?) to the Airport Extreme WAN port that makes it say the Ethernet is Unplugged when it is connected to the WAN. That same WAN connection is perfectly fine connected to a DLink router or an Apple Macbook.
As an added bonus, my testing seems to confirm that when this condition exists, the Extreme also shuts down all the other router ports, as over wireless I can not access the other physical segments (i.e. my NAS). Yet if I my WAN is happy on the Extreme, the other ports work as well.
So in summary, I am convinced there are folks replacing AEBS' because of some sensitivity issue when the unit is inherently okay. I don't know what this fringe issue is, nor can I explain why a new AEBS worked fine on the WAN for a week, until I rebooted it.

Not exactly 'answered', but some newer firware version seems to have resolved this issue.

  • Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme but error says Ethernet unplugged.

Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme and error says Ethernet Unplugged.

So, AirPort Utility running on the Windows Vista desktop can "see" the AirPort Extreme and displays its icon, but gives that error message at some point in the setup process? How far does it get?
Other questions that may help me (or somebody else) understand your problem better:
Which of the pieces were verified as working before the introduction of the AirPort Extreme?
Did you have the desktop computer attached to the Verizon GT704WGB with one of the Ethernet cables you are now trying to use? Which one? Have you tried the other one to be sure it also works?
Are you using the same port on the GT704WGB? Have you tried another one?
If the desktop has multiple ethernet ports, are you using the same one?
Had you done any special configuration of the ethernet port on the Verizon GT704WGB to get it to work with your desktop?
What category ethernet cable are you using? 3? 5? 5e? 6?

  • Ethernet unplugged and the lights do not come on

looking for help... my airport extreme is blinking amber.  I have reset both modem and airport, but when I go to the Airport utility it tells me that my ethernet is unplugged when it is plugged in.  I have also realized that the connectivity lights are no longer present from the modem box to the router.  However when I go directly from the modem box to my MAC I get internet....  any suggestions

I suggest that you perform a "hard reset" on the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for a full 10-12 seconds, then release the reset button and wait 25-30 seconds for the device to restart and display a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility and reconfigure the device again.
If you continue to receive the "no ethernet cable plugged in message", this is a likely indication that the WAN port is defective. It would be best to take the device to an Apple strore to let them have a look and go over your options.

  • Blinking Amber Light/Printing Problems/Ethernet Unplugged

Spent the better part of a day yesterday trying to get my USB printer back online, a recurring problem. Nothing changes from one use to the other, but the printer simply does not print sometimes. Disconnecting and reconnection does not seem to help either. Sometimes I restart the AirPort and plug the printer back in and the AirPort Utility tells me no printer is connected. Have swapped cables and nothing has changed.
Also, the AirPort routinely blinks amber, yet I have no connectivity issues. The AirPort Utility also frequently indicates Ethernet is unplugged when it is not and the network is otherwise functioning. These symptoms all seem like problems directly related to the AirPort software or hardware.
Anyone know what would cause all of these recurring problems? Is it a matter of bad firmware Apple might fix, software I can re-load, or is it defective hardware?

What modem do you have? Is it a pure modem.. ie no router??
If it is a router then the Express has to be in bridge mode.
Assuming you have a pure cable modem..
When you change from the computer to the Airport Express, are you powering down the modem. If it has battery backup for phone you need to remove the battery as well.. it has to be off for around 20min but it can be longer or shorter than that. Restart the modem.. wait a couple of min then plug in the Express which must be in router mode so it captures the public IP.

  • Ethernet plugs and unplugs very quickly on Airport Extreme

Basically what happens is the ethernet connects and disconnects continuously and at a really quick pace so the base station goes crazy. The status signals jump from 2 to 3 a nd viceversa along with the ethernet unplugging and plugging and it's extremely annoying because I can't use my wifi (iCloud goes into tilt) and no metter how many times I try taking the power out and repositioning the ethernet cable, it still doesn't work. The AirPort is set up over WAN but that has never given me problems, in fact it was the solution to my first problem with the base station, and ever since it has worked properly.
This issue has started ever since a bad lightning storm which completely took out all my other devices (TV, PlayStation, internet modem) except the AirPort and the Apple TV. I'm saying this because avter jiggling with the ethernet cable a few timeas and bending it a little, the connection would settle and hold for quite some time. This time the connection won't settle and it's aggravating me too much. So my idea is that the ethernet cable is damaged.
Help would really be appreciated, please help me solve this

So my idea is that the ethernet cable is damaged.
That might be possible, but a new cable would solve that.
This issue has started ever since a bad lightning storm
What has likely happened is that the WAN circuit board behind the WAN port was damaged by the storm/ightning, as were other devices.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be replaced.

  • Time Capsule will not recognize physical Ethernet connection

I recently purchased a Third Generation 2TB Time Capsule (MC343LL/A). Last night, I attempted to utilize the Time Capsule's internal Base Station to create a new wireless network for home usage via both AirPort Utility on my MacBook, and upon failure, additionally with the AirPort Utility app on my iPhone 4 . After using AirPort Utility to initialize the Time Capsule's primary settings, I was then met with an error upon restart of the Time Capsule, stating "Problem 1 of 1: Ethernet Unplugged". Enter the issue, as the Ethernet cable is in fact physically connected to the WAN port on the back of the Time Capsule. Subsequently, this results in the infamous flashing yellow status LED on the unit, and no network creation. Now, if I take that exact Ethernet cable end and plug it into my AirPort Express' (M9470LL/A and MB321LL/A) they recognize it. An older D-Link wireless router that I have kicking around also recognizes said Ethernet cable and connection, as well as both of my MacBooks (MB402*/B), and my Apple TV (Second Generation). I have attempted to both hard reset and soft reset the Time Capsule a myriad of times, and powered my cable modem on and off an equal number of times. All to no avail. And yes, I have tested all of the above with a plethora of different physical cables. Any and all ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

In your normal setup.. is the TC connected via a wall ethernet port directly back to the modem? Have you plugged the TC directly into the modem with a short 1M patch cable?
We do see occasional instances of gigabit not exchanging auto speed info correctly with fast ethernet. Somewhere you need to be able to lock the speed at one end.. so the auto speed is removed.
That is not possible in the TC.. perhaps the modem offers some way to lock the speed.
Putting a switch inbetween is often the way to fix the problem.. which is exactly what you are doing with the dlink router.. they correctly auto-negotiate the speed. Can you please check if the dlink is 10/100 which speed it linked at. If it linked at 10mbit I would say there could be issues with the WAN port of the TC.

  • Apple TV doesn't recognize computer over WiFi, but does through Ethernet

Home Sharing from iTunes on my Mac Pro to an Apple TV (2nd Generation) only works if the Apple TV is connected to the router using Ethernet (i.e., hardwired). With WiFi (using the same router), the Apple TV won't detect the Mac Pro library. Everything else works fine over WiFi (e.g., Netflix and movie rentals). I can even control the Apple TV using my iPad when connected via WiFi or Ethernet. The only thing that doesn't work via WiFi is access to a network iTunes library. Any suggestions? The router is in bridge mode (i.e., it is an extension of the router that the Mac Pro is connected to). However, since the hardwire connection works, why wouldn't the WiFi connection work? And why does it work for everything but the network library.

Thanks for the suggestions. The problem actually solved itself. When I unplugged my Apple TV, the wireless wasn't recognized so I put it to sleep and woke it back up. When it came back on, the wireless recognized my Mac Pro library. If anyone else has trouble, you might try getting the Apple TV to recognize the desktop by using a hardwire. Then restart the Apple TV (or put it to sleep and wake it back up) with the ethernet unplugged and see if it will show up.
By the way, the bridge mode on my extender isn't a problem. I can hardwire or wireless to the extender router and the IP address on the Apple TV is the same as the host router (i.e., the one that the Apple TV is not plugged into).
    Thanks again.

  • Airport Express won't connect to internet via WAN ethernet

I have new model Airport Express (AE)
I am attempting to use the AE as a wifi router in my office.  I'm sure the office has some sort of secure internet, although when I hardwire my computer to the internet via ethernet my computer connects immediately to internet with no passwords or logins necessary.
I have set up my AE to create a new wireless network.  It is ready to go, but it does not recognize that it is connected to internet.  Ethernet cord is plugged into WAN input, and other end is plugged into wall for office supplied internet.
AE will not recognize that it is connected to internet.
I assume this is due to something with the office supplied internet being secured or "special."  Is there a work around here, or suggested next steps?
    Thanks.

If you get all three together, "Ethernet unplugged" would pretty much explain the other two errors. Troubleshoot that first.
Is the same ethernet cable you are using with the AE the same one that worked with your computer? Is it oriented in the same direction (same end to the wall) as when it was used with the computer? Your office might use a non-standard cabling system or be taking some other measures to deter the use of foreign equipment.
Have you asked your office's technical support folks for any special instructions?

  • Slow internet connection with gigabit ethernet?

I have a 1Gbps (1000Mbps) internet connection from my ISP, using the internet speed testing service provided by local authorities, my internet download speed is shown to be at least 250Mbps (close to the max limit of the test) when my iMac directly connected to my wall ethernet socket.
However, when Mac is connected to the internet through my 2012 Time Capsule (all ethernet and time machine disabled), my internet download speed is slowed to 96-98Mbps.
I understand that all ethernet ports on the 2012 spec Time Capsule is gigabit ethernet, and I have checked my connection using the network utilities, which confirms that my linkspeed is 1Gbps.  The hardware tab on my Network preferences also shows that my ethernet is set to 1--base T, full-duplex.
So where did the 60% speed decrease come from?   Is this ~96-98Mbps speed limit a hardware limitation? Or is my time capsule set up incorrectly?
I understand that similar questions might have been posted in the forum before, but I haven't b thread with the exact issue I described above.   Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your incredibly detailed reply.  All the information in your solution is correct, and while it did not directly solve my problem, it would have taken my a lot longer to figure out the issue without the information you provided.
I didn't realize we're missing so many functions in airport utility 6.0.
Anyways, upon reading your advice, I installed Airport utility 5.6 on mountain lion and checked the link speed settings.    Apparently it was automatically set to 100Mbps when connected to my cable modem.
Strangely, if I manually change the link speed to 1000Mbps full duplex, Time Capsule would report an "ethernet unplugged" error along with the consequential "internet connections" and "no DNS servers" error.   Since my ISP has been supporting consumer 1Gbps internet for a few years now, and since I am able to get an over-100Mbps actual link speed with directly connection to my cable modem, I am certain that my cable modem connection supports 1000Mbps local connections.
Many thanks for your incredibly detailed reply.  All the information in your solution is correct, and while it did not directly solve my problem, it would have taken my a lot longer to figure out the issue without the information you provided.

You're also correct in that Time Capsule does not have a settings for "half duplex" for 1000Mbps link speed.  But hooking my my mac directly with my cable modem, Mac network preference pane reports that the 1000Mbps connection between my mac and cable modem is full duplex, so my ISP does allow full duplex 1000Mbps connection.
After NUMEROUS tests, I discovered the problem is down to a FAULTY ETHERNET CABLE, which I did not use for my Mac -> cable modem direct connection.  This was why I was able to get gigabit ethernet speed with a direct connection but not through time capsule!
I replaced the faulty cable with a new cat-6 ethernet cable and voila! problem solved!
So here're the test results (using an more up-to-date speed test) before and after I replaced the faulty lan cable:-
(while I'm at it, I've also thrown in some additional results demoing the wired and wireless throughput of the 4th gen Time Capsule)
    Faulty cable through Time Capsule:-
    New ethernet cable direct connection:-
    Wired connection through Time Capsule:-
Wireless Connection (wireless-n 5GHz three streem 450Mbps transmit rate) through Time Capsule:-
I'm a bit surprised that a damaged cable resulted in a lower link speed rather than no connection at all.
Also, while the throughput of Time Capsule can't really match the link speed of the direct connection, I'd say it's not shabby at all.
Thanks again LaPastenague for your solutions.

  • Came home yesterday to find my time capsule has an orange light blinking and my wifi network is no longer working. Not sure how/why this happened and can't get it working. Do i just reset it and will this lose my backups? Or can I create a new wifi n/w?

Its an  802.11n (4th Gen) model
I looked at the diagnostics screen (next to the blinking orange icon on the Airport Utility and it says there are four issues:
the software (currently V 7.6.1) has an update available. If I click update I get the error message "There was an error connecting to the update server. Check your network settings and try again". However, nothing's been changed settings-wise
The other 3 status issues are:
Internet Connection - but the router is working fine and I can connect to the router via wifi on my MacBook Pro
No DNS Servers - I have no idea what this means
Ethernet Unplugged - it's not and I also replaced the ethernet cable which has no effect
Do I just cut my losses and hit the reset button - if so will I need to back everything up again (i.e. I will no longer be able to access my backups) or do I just set up a new wifi network - again, will this impact on my backups?
Any help/advice would be appreciated - thanks

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • HT3224 I am new to Mac and started transferring data from my PC to my new Macbook Pro.  Connection was lost once I started and now my Pro is stuck on the 'Transferring Information' screen.  How do I get out of this screen to attempt the connection again?

II am new to Mac and was trying to transfer data from my PC to my new Macbook Pro.  The connection was lost however and now my Pro is stuck on the 'Transferring you nformation' screen.  How do I get out of this screen so I can attempt the connection again?  Is it safe to force shut down of my Mac and will it still prompt me through all the setup process again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac and PC are connected by Ethernet, unplug and plug that cable again. If not, you have to turn off the MacBook by holding the Power button.
In the next startup, try to transfer your files again. It's important not to interrupt the transfer process, because in most cases, you will stop it and you won't be able to resume it

  • How do I set up my AirPort Extreme  to provide IP addresses without being connected to the Internet?

II'm trying to set up my AirPort Extreme in the field without an Internet connection so that devises can communicate wirelessly but there aren't any IP addresses being generated

Just run the AE in router mode.. if you have difficult with the setup do it completely manually..
This is how I do it.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
As long as the AE is running in DHCP and NAT mode it will produce IP addresses.. however you cannot turn off WAN.
You could give it a static IP .. so set to static instead of dhcp if you like.. eg.
DNS and WAN errors.. double NAT, Ethernet unplugged, etc.. so it makes no real difference..
The AE will function fine as router (Wireless AP) to your network however..
    Just ignore all the errors.
