Ethernet Won't Connect after 10.5.6 Upgrade

After doing the upgrade to 10.5.6 on my MacBook Pro, the ethernet port no longer seems to work. The Network preferences panel claims that the cable for Ethernet is not plugged in when it certainly is and works just fine with other computers (Mac and PC). I know Airport works since that's how I'm connecting to write this.
Anyone else seen this problem? Anyone have a solution?

Have you tried rebooting your router?
There are two major parts to connecting to the Internet using Wi-Fi and DHCP:
1) Associating with the network
This is where you connect to your local network, typically by selecting your router's SSID and entering its password. This is the Wi-Fi equivalent of connecting your machine to a router using an Ethernet cable.
2) Obtaining an IP address (and other network parameters) via DHCP
This is where your machine asks your local DHCP server for an IP address and if one is available, your DHCP server should provide it (and other network parameters, such as the local netmask, the gateway address for your network, the addresses of your network's DNS servers, etc.)
When this step fails, computers fall back to what is called a self-assigned IP address. This address, 169.x.x.x, is an IP address systems use when an attempt to obtain an IP address via DHCP fails.
This is done so that two machines connected to each other without a DHCP server in place will still be able to communicate in an ad-hoc fashion, but they will not be able to connect to other networks (such as the Internet.)
The question of why DHCP fails is a rather complex one with a variety of possible causes - router issues, DHCP server issues, and so forth. For example, some cable modems are configured to only issue a single IP address - any device other than the first to ask will not be able to obtain one. Still more common is they can only assign a limited number of addresses - say five - a number quite easy to reach if say you have a DVR, a couple iPhones, a computer and a Wii or XBox in the house.
So the first things to do to try and resolve the issue are the easy ones, and rebooting your router is tops on that list.

Had my iMac upgraded to 10.4.11 after some problems. Works well... except now, iTunes store will not connect... when I try to connect to store I get message saying, "Can not complete request - Itunes store may be busy...check internet connection and try again later."
    Worked fine before upgrade.
Any recommendations on how to get iTunes Store connection back?

what version of iTunes are you running ?
you may need to install iTunes 9.2.1 on your machine.

  • Both iPod and iPad won't connect after update.

Both iPod and iPad won't connect after update.  iTunes says "can't allocate a resource"

I had the same problem after updating to iOS 7 today. I did follow the advice on another site, but additionally rebooted my iMac. Worked after that.
Follow these steps to reset the Lockdown folder:
Disconnect all iOS devices from your computer and quit iTunes.
From the Finder, choose Go > Go to folder.
Type the following and then press Return:
    /var/db/lockdown.
The Finder window should display one or more files with long alphanumeric file names.
In the Finder, choose Edit > Select all. Then, choose File > Move to Trash. Enter an administrator password if prompted.
Note: Do not delete the Lockdown folder itself. Delete only the files contained inside the Lockdown folder.
Reconnect your iOS device and open iTunes
My Additional step: reboot the Mac. Your iPad should give the first indication that it has worked by asking you to "trust this computer" or some such. Agree. Then iTunes should have reopened with your iPad showing and syncing.

  • IBook G3 Ethernet won't connect...

I'm staying at a hotel in Chenai, India and my Ethernet won't connect. All advice is to contact my ISP, but I can't remember my ISP. Do I simply have to type in a new IP address? If so, where do Ifind it? I need an Ethernet connection! SOS!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to talk to the hotel and ask for their ISP address.
You are trying to connect via their internet service, so you need their information.

  • ICal won't launch after 10.5.2 upgrade

my iCal won't launch after 10.5.2 upgrade. it won't even give an "unexpectedly quit" message, it pops up then quits, then nothing. This happened immediately after the upgrade today. I got the leopard disc out and did an archive and install then it worked perfect, no issues, then I did a software update (since I was back to 10.5.0), and installed the 10.5.2 security upgrade, now iCal will not launch, am I the only one with this problem?

I had the exact same problem -- doubled events and could not edit anything. I flushed the cache as describe in some more detail here: http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/2506/iCal-problem-with-Leopard-Upgrade and everything started working just fine.

  • My Ethernet won't connect online anymore

Just a little while this was working. I am using a school network so I have no control over the router, it's public.
I had to change my MAC address in order to connect and for a couple of months it's been working, even today. I don't know what changed in the settings, though.
Now it won't connect via ethernet and states "Self-assigned IP". When I change the MAC address I do it through Terminal, it has never messed with the Ethernet IP settings, even today. But when I changed the MAC address again the Ethernet changed to "Self-assigned IP" instead of "Connected".
So how can I stop my Ethernet settings from changing by themselves?
Like I said, I always used to change the MAC address and it NEVER interfered with the IP address until now, so how can I fix that?

I'm changing it because I can't connect to the internet through the original mac address.
I'm changing it through terminal using a sudo code which makes the change temporary. It goes back to normal once it's rebooted.
What I'm telling you and what emphasized is that it's been working. I admit I didn't monitor the Ethernet setting before when it was working so I can't tell you what state it was at "Connected" or "Self-assigned IP". So I thought that changing the mac address wouldn't interfere with it. So now when I change the address it won't connect, unlike just an hour ago when it connected fine. So now it won't connect wither before or after I change my mac address.
You see when it is connected to the net, regardless of what the mac address is, it should open up to the school's registration page. That's why a mac address change shouldn't prevent me from seeing that page but now it is.

  • Backup - time capsule - ethernet - won't connect

I left my time capsule unconnected for a period of time, over a week anyway. I commenced a backup - unsurprisingly, using wireless it was taking a very long time.
I wanted to speed it up. I connected ethernet cable to ethernet ports in Macbook and Time Capsule. However, it won't connect. It says 'back up disk not available'.
I have looked around discussion topics and can't see a solution.
Anyone experience something similar or able to advise? Many thanks

I managed to work it out. You have to disable the wireless operation of the Time Capsule before you can get an ethernet connection to work. Wrongly assumed they might just operate as alternatives.
    SO all sorted now ...

  • Help!  External drive won't connect after Yosemite 10.10.2 update

I ran the Yosemite 10.10.2 update on my 2013 MacBook Air today, and now I cannot connect to my external Western Digital hard drive.  At times, the drive won't connect or show up at all, but at other times, I get a warning that the computer cannot read or repair it.  Help!  It worked this morning and all of my photos are on there.  I know other people have had similar issues, but I haven't found anything resembling a solution.  (And yes, I have restarted everything, tried different cords, etc.)  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Windows Vista won't connect after security change

I have an AirPort Extreme base station, to which we connect using an iMac, PowerBook G4 and a Windows Vista laptop. I used to have it set to WEP, but changed it to WPA for the increased security. After the change, my PowerBook and iMac are connecting just fine, but my wife's Vista machine has been nothing but headaches. It will sometimes connect, after a bit of fighting with it, but not reliably or quickly. At the moment, it says that it is connected with local and internet access, but I can't actually access anything on the internet, and diagnosing the problem in Vista reports that a wireless network cannot be found (despite the fact that it simultaneously reports that it is connected to one).
I know squat about Windows -- I'm a Mac guy. Anybody know how to help me fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

No answers, but the problem seems to have disappeared. Man, I'm starting to realize how fortunate I am to have been using Macs for the last 23 years. I think Vista is going to be a very good thing for Apple! There's nothing like actually using Vista to make one want to flee screaming and never look back...

wi-fi wont connect after updating to iOS5

This is what worked for me:
    1. In wireless settings, select your router and then selet "forget this network."
    2. Turn wireless off.
    3. Hard restart the phone (press power switch and main button simultaneously, hold them until the phone turns off.
    4. Reboot your router, preferably unplug the power cord completely.
    5. After your router is up and running, turn wireless back on, select your network, then enter your password.
For me, the fix was immediate.  I hope it works for you!

  • Zagg keyboard won't connect to iPad ever since upgrade to iOS 7.1.2

Ever since I updated my iPad 3 to iOS 7.1.2, my Zagg keyboard won't connect to my iPad. I get the code but whenever i type it in I get no reaction. And after a few seconds I get "make sure your device is on and in range." Can someone please tell me a fix for this I've reset network settings, deleted the keyboard from the known list of devices and full charged my keyboard. Nothing's helping.

I have a Zagg KB and it works well.
First reset the iPad by holding the home and power keys down until the Apple logo appears (15-20 seconds).
Be sure (stating the obvious) Bluetooth is turned on. Turn the Zagg KB on...it should start to hunt for the wireless network. Press the connect button on the Zagg KB - the red light should begin to blink. On the iPad (settings>Bluetooth) click on the Zagg.

  • IPod won't connect after 2 weeks of working perfect

After using my iPod for a couple of weeks with no problems, all of a sudden, it does not connect when I plug it into the dock. It will charge, but the "Do not Disconnect" logo does not come on and iTunes won't recognize it.
I definitely have the newest software on the iPod. I even downloaded iTunes again, even though I already had the up to date version. I am using the iPod Video on Windows with the Universal Dock. This is my fourth iPod so I am not a total newby. I have tried all of the normal fixes.
I have tried three different connection cables with the same results. The kicker is that my iPod Nano connects and works perfectly sitting in its dock right next to the iPod Video.
If anyone has had this problem or has any ideas please let me know.
I have reset the iPod more times than I can count.
iPod updater does not recognize it. "Please plug in an iPod to update it" is all that I get from that.
I have connected the iPod directly to my PC using three different cables (all of which work fine with my Nano).
The iPod is showing as a USB Mass Storage Device in XP's device manager.
The iPod DOES charge while in the dock.
    Thanks, Rick

Without knowing which iPod model, Operating Systems, USB or Firewire and other specifics everyone has, it's hard to isolate what exactly the problem may be. I don't think all of you are having the exact same problem, but maybe you are.
Richard, looks like you covered all the bases. Here are a few more things, if you haven't tried. If your Nano and Video are both connected, it could cause problems. I saw a post awhile ago about a guy who's problems went away when he only connected one iPod. Actually, it's best to disconnect all USB devices you can while trouble-shooting, especially if they are a USB storage device. You mentioned trying different cables, what about different USB ports? You mention that the "Do not Disconnet" logo does not appear, but the device manager sees a USB Mass Storage Device. I'm not sure if that's possible, that the Do Not Disconnect will not appear, but it is being recognized by the device manager. Is the device manager seeing a different Storage Device? ...or is that what's happening? Maybe it's time for Steven's option #4. Here's a few more ideas for everyone.
-Make sure the iPod is charged, charging for 4 hours will do it. Some USB ports are not high-powered ports and won't charge an iPod.
-Reset and Restore do different things. Reset mostly resets back to factory settings and calibrates the keys (don't touch any keys while it is calibrating), and you should not loose any data on the iPod. Resets are mostly done by holding down key combinations on the iPod and different iPods have different key combonations, make sure you are resetting for the iPod you have. If the iPod won't reset (comes up with Exclamation Folder, Frozen, etc...), mostly likely will have to be serviced.
-Uninstall iTunes, iPod. This means completely uninstalling. There are some folders that may have settings stored in them that are not removed when uninstalling iTunes. Remove them also; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698. Restart the computer between uninstalling and reinstalling, especially if using Windows.
-Update the iPod. Download the latest version of Updater for your Operating System, there is one for MAC and one for Windows. Updater is also where you will Restore your iPod; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60944
-Restore will erase all the data on the iPod (have backups of the data, it can't be recovered from the iPod) and restore it's factory settings (disable disk mode, etc). Restore is done from the Updater program. Here is information on restoring; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983.
-Check the system requirements for your iPod model. Win XP (Home and Pro) usually needs Service Packs (SP) 1 and 2. Some iPods will work with only SP1, but it's best to have both. Win 2K requires SP 4.
-Try getting updates for your computer, especially if you are using PCI cards for USB or Firewire.
-Isolate the iPod. Disconnect other USB devices, especially if they are storage devices. Stop any programs that might be running in the background, disable virus software...3rd party software can interfere.
-Some Toshiba notebooks with the VIA chipset "will not work" with iPods. Hopefully you have access to another computer.
The following article might help. "iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes"; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716.
I'm interested in what everyone finds out. Good luck.

  • Mail won't connect after waking from sleep

5K display iMac running Yosemite 10.2.2: When I first boot my iMac mail works perfectly as does the rest of my internet connection. I am using Ethernet directly connected to the router, but the same thing will happen if I use the wifi connection. Router is directly connected to the cable modem.
If I put the iMac to sleep and come back the next morning: I will see new messages available in my gmail and other accounts that have loaded during the night. If I hit the "get new messages" button, sometimes it will get the initial group of messages (IMAP) and move them into the POP gmail account, but most of the time mail will just fail to make a connection. The connection doctor will tell me that I'm not connecting to the internet. However, if I go to Safari or any other internet app, I have no trouble connecting.
Then, somewhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours after waking the iMac it magically connects - until the next time I put the iMac to sleep. Quitting and restarting Mail makes no difference. I have already deleted Sophos and anything else that others seemed to suggest would cause a problem. I have no trouble seeing anything in the mbox messages stored on the iMac. I just can't send or receive mail until it comes back to life.
    Suggestions are gratefully appreciated.

I don't yet have Q2007, waiting for first patch to show up, but I would look for a conflict with other programs or background processes, lack of RAM, or whether you migrated some PPC application or libraries.
I see that Quicken 2006 got an update Sept. 9th.
One of the fixes in the Q2006 R5 patch:
Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when launching with certain internal files corrupted.
    I would reinstall Quicken.
    Rosetta:
I know it runs PPC, but if someone didn't tell me that PPC apps run under Rosetta, I would not know it was there (it isn't a listed process, and you can't choose whether to use Rosetta or not, like choosing between Preview and Acrobat). Only because under Get Info: Kind: Application (PPC) - and you would have to know that equates to Rosetta.
So you're sure it is working fine in Rosetta... I read 10.4.8 is suppose to improve Rosetta...
The best way to improve Rosetta is to have 2GB RAM.

  • Ethernet slow to connect after waking from sleep

Since installing Lion (and updating to 10.7.1) on my 2008 24" iMac I have noticed that after waking from sleep the internet connection takes about 10 seconds to restore. I have reset the SMC and PRAM and performed a safe boot (in case this helped) but to no avail. The slow conenction can be observed if after waking from sleep the Network System Preference is clicked and the ethernet status "light" is red, changes briefly to amber and then green indcating a connection. The iMac is connected via an ethernet cable to a Linksys 802.11n 4 port wireless router.
I also have a 2010 13" MacBook Pro, with the same OS, and version, conencted in the same way to the same Linksys router and it does not exhibit this problem.
This slow internet connection access after waking from sleep is an annoyance and I'd appreciate any input on how to elimnate it.
Thanks to those wiser than I, who might read this note.

I've found a list of possible solutions here's the link:

I solved my problem moving the Ethernet and WiFi adapters in the top of the list and Bluetooth at the end.
Move Wi-Fi to the top of the Service Order list – This is an old tip that simply prioritizes WiFi as the primary method that your Mac should connect to the internet, and it seems to help maintain connections
