Ethtool bug or driver bug or faulty built-in NIC ?

First the hardware particulars -
- The laptop in question is an Acer Aspire 5050 with an AMD x86-64 Turion cpu
- There is an on-board SATA chip (unused), which throws up some very odd errors but except on slackware distros, seems to do no harm. {It cannot be disabled in the bios either thanks to Acers craptastic bioses.}
- It has an IDE WD 120gb hard drive and an ATI 200M video chipset (xorg IDs it as an 1100 IGP/465 chip)
- The NIC in question is: eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xf8848c00, IRQ 18; eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8100B/8139D'.
- Ethtool reports this in querying the Nic in question:

Now to the issue at hand
This is not so much a problem as it is an annoyance really. For whatever reason, on several distros that I have investigated, my on-board nic is incapable of being used at the 100mbit setting it is capable of using.
Typically when I first boot a distro, the nic is detected and will work fine, however it runs at half-duplex and on 10mb/s. It is capable of full duplex mode & 100mb/s.
I did alot of research about how I could enable full duplex and 100mb/s modes. I found ethtool to be the answer, or so I thought. However, when ever I've used ethtool, it will set full duplex mode correctly but if I tell it to set the card to use 100mb/s mode, the link itself will not stay up. It insists there is no link detected and restarting the network connection does nothing, as the card never receives an IP address from my router. As soon as I revert the card to 10mb/s and restart the network connection, I receive an IP as expected.
To date, after having googled my brains out, I have not found any solution to this little dilemma. I have asked on a different forum a similar question but the few people there could not give any answers.  The only real answer I got was to swap out NICs (a somewhat useless suggestion as it is built-in). I hoped that posting here, perhaps someone with a similar NIC could offer any insight into this issue.  Failing that, could someone tell me if I should report this as a bug to some developer perhaps (Ethtools' dev?).
I will provide any other information possible on-demand to any who may have insight. For now, I've posted as much as I could think of to help shed light on this.

    It does not happen when I ran it in VMWare fusion or other machines. So I am sure this is a graphics driver problem.

    BTW, I tried to force-install a later nvidia driver from the official website. The drop down problem goes away but I lose the ability to change screen brightness.

    Thanks for your quick reply. I am not convinced it is a hardware problem. For if I hold the key that is faulty pressed for a few seconds it works, and the also works for a while before it stops working again. This to me seems like it is software based. Is there a secure way to test software vs. hardware e.g. by booting from an external image into a shell only? I do not think I have an image on a usb, is there any online server that I can connect to to try it?

    When I launch my project from Logic 7 it plays / triggers.....When I launch same project in Logic 8 it doesn't play / trigger...
    OF NOTE: I also have 2 other slave computers that are hooked up to AMT8 ports 4 and 8.....those trigger just fine...

    My setup is identical to iS's. Unitor8 with AMT8 daisychained.
    I have port 6 I/O of the U8 going to a CM Motormix. Working great.
    I have port 14 I/O (port 6 of the AMT8) going to my old G3 Soundiver-Kurzweil K2500 rig. Also working great.
    Ports 7 and 15 at the moment aren't connected to anything, but I can test them later if you like. The LEDs for those ports are lighting when I send MIDI to them from L8 though.
    Note that when I installed Logic 8, there's an option to install the Unitor8 family drivers. I checked that. (Just in case). Try running the installer again with everything unchecked except that. Maybe there's a new version?

  • Who goes over bugs in the "bug reporter"?

    I opened a bug in the "bug reporter" - for my point of view is really important (UX bug) and up to now there is no response what so ever.
    I assume that there are lots of bugs, but still, go over and see what's what.
    to make things short, my bug (which I checked over all iPhones, with iOS 6/6.0.1 - except for iPhone 5) shows that when attaching images in landscape mode, the keyboard is cut (looks like it's stuck in portrait)
    my bug number is 12401335, so if anyone knows, please let me know so I can let the iPhone guys on this issue....

    I don't know what device you have. if it's not 5 and you have iOS 6 (or above), you can check for yourself the bug...
    you hold your device in landscape mode, open an image, send it in a message (so far so good)
    still in landscape mode, click on adding an additional image, choose one and see the keyboard half the size...
    do that and tell me if it's not important

  • Equium A60 with faulty built in memory

    Hi
    I have tried recovering my Equium A60 with the recovery DVD and it will not boot windows. I tried to install a number of different versions of windows and the error messages lead me to the conclusion that the memory module is faulty. The system came with 256MB of memory and this is non removable as it is part of the motherboard. My question is if I buy a memory module and install it in the expansion slot will it be prevented from working by the faulty built-in memory?

    Hi Kevin,
    Unfortunately there is no way to isolate the faulty RAM on your motherboard. Even if you install a second RAM module the system will still try to use the faulty built in module as well.
    You will need to take you notebook to an ASP for the faulty module to be replaced.

    I have an Intel GMA 945 and I'm using x586-video-intel and intel-dri.
    It is interesting to see that these crashes happen as soon as the total memory used by Linux approaches/reaches my physical memory size of 2 GB. I should note that I have an SSD - so I do not use swap. With total memory used I mean memory that programs use plus cached memory, so my memory isn't actually "full" since the kernel could just free some cached memory to accommodate the memory Firefox needs. But this is not what happens: as soon as all of the memory is used, Xorg crashes in this scenario. I can prolong the time of crash by manually freeing the cached memory before, but again, as soon as the memory that "free -m" reports as used approaches my physical limit of 2 GB, I get a crash.
    Note that this is not an OOM Killer issue. OOM Killer doesn't do anything (and it shouldn't: the cached memory is available to the system, after all).
    I'm willing to test out any suggestions. My guess is that there is a bug in the intel driver but I rather be sure beforehand.

  • Video Driver Bug?

    Ever since installing Yosemite on my Late 2012, 27" iMac, Adobe Photoshop has caused problems when opening and saving large images. The time of trouble is inconsistent. Once it starts, I have to close and open Photoshop for it to go away.
    What happens is the image I am working on will get randomly tiles as if a mosaic.
    Chris Cox posted on Adobe's site that this is a known bug due to faulty video drivers in OS 10.10 Yosemite. That forum says turning off "Use Graphics Processor" in Photoshop > Preferences > Performance solves the problem. He said Apple is aware of the problem and is working on a fix. That was posted December 3, 2014, two months ago.
    I did that, now the magnifying glass works the way it did about three versions ago, and simple things like cloning have slowed down so that they are not in real time anymore.
    Does anyone know? is this Apple's problem? If so, are they really working on it? Why is it taking so long?

    Yes, the internal connection is known to be an LCD panel, whereas the VGA can be a CRT or an LCD.  In the case of an LCD on a VGA connector, the controller receives and decodes the video signal and recovers the data, whatever the timing and format.  Those data are then scaled to the native format of the LCD panel and are buffered in RAM.  The backend reads data from RAM and drives the panel in use at the rate, in the format it demands.
    I cannot really speak to the inconsistency regard xrandr and the actual refresh rate.  I can envision some scenarios, but they would just be hypotheses.
    One interesting thing about LCDs -- They don't flicker like CRTs.  LCDs shutters pretty much remain static from frame to frame, emitting light for the entire period.  CRTs only emit light from a pixel after it has been illuminated by the sweeping electron beam.  This is why it is possible to photograph LCD displays at arbitrary shutter speeds.  This does mitigate most of the need to drive the panel at one rate or the other.  The only real issue is that, in order to eliminate mid-field tearing by synchronizing to a non-native frame rate, requires dropping frames when going from 60->50Hz or doubling frames when going from 50->60Hz.

    I'd like to report a bug in the solaris 8 and 9 /dev/poll driver (poll(7d)).
    As i do not have a support account with sun or anything like that, there
    seems to be no other way to do that here (which is of course a very sad
    thing).
    Bug details:
    The /dev/poll device provides an ioctl-request (DP_ISPOLLED) for checking
    if a particular filedescriptor is currently in the set of monitored
    filedescriptors for that particular /dev/poll fd set (open /dev/poll fd).
    A quote from the documentation of the poll(7d) manual page taken from
    Solaris9:
    "DP_ISPOLLED ioctl allows you to query if a file descriptor is already in
    the monitored set represented by fd. The fd field of the pollfd structure
    indicates the file descriptor of interest. The DP_ISPOLLED ioctl returns 1
    if the file descriptor is in the set. The events field contains the
    currently polled events. The revents field contains 0. The ioctl returns 0
    if the file descriptor is not in the set. The pollfd structure pointed by
    pfd is not modified. The ioctl returns a -1 if the call fails."
    It says that when you query for an filedescriptor which is currently being
    monitored in the set, that it would return 1, and change the events field of
    the pollfd structure to the events it's currently monitoring that fd for.
    The revents field would be set to zero.
    However the only thing which actually happens here, is that FD_ISPOLLED
    returns 1 when the fd is in the set and 0 if not. When the fd is in the
    set, when FD_ISPOLLED returns 1, the events field remains unmodified, but
    the revents field gets changed.

    with /dev/poll patch too) DP_ISPOLLED implementation is broken.
    This bug is also easily illustrated by looking at the solaris8 kernel sourcecode:

    its' clearly visible that the code writes the current monitored events to
    the revents field:
    'pollfd.revents = pdp->pd_events;'
    and that it doesnt set revents to zero.
    It's funny to see that this has been like this since Solaris8 (possibly 7). That means nobody ever used DP_ISPOLLED that way or people were simply to lazy to file a bug report.
    Another funny thing related to this. is that Hewlett-Packard did seem to know about this. Since HP-UX11i version 1.6 they also support /dev/poll. From their manual page i ll quote some sentences from their WARNING session:
    "The ioctl(DP_ISPOLLED) system call also returns its result in the revents member of the pollfd structure, in order to be compatible with the implementation of the /dev/poll driver by some other vendors."
    Hopefully this will get fixed.
    I also like to reexpress my very negative feelings towards the fact that you're not able to file bug reports when you do not have a support contract. Ridiculous.

    I copyed the driver jar file into /opt/SUNWappserv/domains/domain1/lib. But it still cannot be found.
    I have to specify the path in JVM path setting. Is this a bug?

    try dropping the jar in /opt/SUNWappserv/domains/domain1/lib/ext and restart the server.

  • T430 Optical drive bug in Windows 8

    Hi, I made a huge mistake when I decided to install lenovo settings dependancy program... among other bugs, I noticed that I can see my optical drive twice in My computer
    Not only I saw it twice, but the Lenovo shortcut didn't really work.. it was saying its Powered Off even if it wasn't... So I decided to unisntall this lenovo software and now I see this...When I click on it, it says the modul couldn't be found... any idea how to remove the bloody shortcut?

  • 4 TB Drive Bug?

    I have a 6-core 3.33GHz MacPro (MacPro5,1) that I bought off the refurb site a few months ago.  I had the unit running 10.8.5, then I bought a 4TB Toshiba hard drive for it.  I installed it, and formatted and partitioned it in Disk Utility.  However, I shut the machine down and, when I started back up, it did not "see" the drive as a Toshiba, only the separate partitions, and I could not run any maintenance on it.  I could not even reformat the drive while in the MacPro.  After reading some comments on-line, I wiped the operating system and went back to 10.8.2; now everything is fine, been fine for nearly 3 weeks.  Supposedly, Apple introduced a bug, in 10.8.3 or 10.8.4, that caused this problem.  Does anyone know if there is a fix available - or planned?

    I just called Apple Care and I'm astonished by the answers that the operator gave me :
    - he couldn't confirm if Airport Extreme could handle 4 TB disk drive or not. More : he said he cannot obtain this information.
    - he advised me to plug on my Aiport Extreme a 4 TB drive borrowed to a friend, or buy a new 4 TB drive in a shop with a 4 days refund policy (to return the drive after the test).
    I was very unsatisfied by these answers, arguing to my operator that for me HE is Apple and I expected him to have informations about the specs of Apple products. In the end he advised me to go in a Genius bar with my hard disk. So I asked him a ticket number to give to the Genius bar. He said there was not.
    I'm very frustrated by the very low level of information of this call :
    - Apple Care didn't confirmed an information that looks correct according to newsgroups or a technical support reseller,
    - Apple Care couldn't confirmed the problem was handled by a developpement team at Apple, neither when it could be published.
    Another point about Apple Care : when I called Apple Care Yesterday, they said they couldn't handle my request because I haven't the serial number of the Airport Extreme. I said I wanted to confirm the incompatibility for ALL the Airport Extreme, but they argued they must give me a correct answer for my case, especially. Today, after giving the serial number, they said they couldn't answer.

  • OS X Snow Leopard Display Driver BUG (Apple should be doing something...)

    Many of you are having problems conecting your Flat-Panel Monitor to the Mac Mini (2010), the picture wont fit the screen at max resolution, and if you use underscan option the text bleeds and the quality is very bad.
    *_But if you install Windows using BootCamp the Flat-Screen Monitor works flawlessly_.*
    Its unbelievable that Apple still cant make their display driver work fine...
    and there is no way to report this bug that its afecting all users that are not using their mac mini with a TV

  • Oracle 10g ODBC Driver Bug (10.1.0.3.1)

    Using the ODBC driver version 10.1.0.3.1, there is a problem retrieving BLOB data in chunks using multiple calls to SQLGetData() when the datatype specified is SQL_CHAR.
    Instead of returning (<BufferLength> - 1) characters (ANSI) along with a NULL, it returns exactly <BufferLength> characters (possibly with a NULL, I haven't double checked this) - pretty much the behavior you would expect if SQL_BINARY was specified. This has the affect of losing one character for each truncated chunk.
    According to the ODBC spec, "If the length of character data (including the null-termination character) exceeds BufferLength, SQLGetData truncates the data to BufferLength less the length of a null-termination character. It then null-terminates the data. If the length of binary data exceeds the length of the data buffer, SQLGetData truncates it to BufferLength bytes."
    The way I read this, as long as you specify the datatype as SQL_CHAR, the character data rules should be applied.
    I tried to submit this as a TAR in Metalink, but it seems I don't have the TAR button. Is this the correct forum for this issue? Thanks.

    AFAIK, Oracle doesn't officially monitor these forums and where/when they do it is a haphazard and volunteer basis (personal observations).
    They do monitor the MetaLink forums so perhaps that was the cause of the confusion. At any rate the answer to use a forum to file a bug is wrong you do it through a support TAR and that can either be created from MetaLink (TARS button--missing for you) or via the phone.
