Etresoft Report: Slow file synch over LAN
Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro connected wirelessly to my QNAP TS-453 NAS. All finder based activities seem to be reasonably quick, but the QSync utility (similar to Dropbox in its operation) is very very slow. It takes approximately 30-40 minutes to synch a single change and the first time synch was hours. Dropbox does it in minutes. All network devices are set to 1500 MTU and I have confirmed non fragmentation of packets using ping -d -s <ip>.
After speaking to QNAP support, they pointed me towards Etresoft's great utility, the output of which is posted below.
Is there anything that is screaming off the page as to what may be causing this slow performance?
Problem description:
Poor performance when synching with QNAP NAS using QSync file sync tool

Extremely slow file copying over airport extreme network
Hi,
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (10/100) network, also connected to the internet. When copying files from my MacBook Pro to a USB drive connected to the base station, OR when copying files to another computer (a windows machine) the throughput maxes out at about 700 KB/sec which is 10 times slower than when copying to the USB drive connected directly to my MacBook Pro. Although I have updated everything to the latest and greatest versions, I still have very slow file copy speeds. It's always been this way. I've read dozens of threads for potential fixes but none of them have helped. I am using Activity Monitor to measure the throughput and also timing the copy of a 10GB file. At these speeds, that file takes 4 hours. Useless.
My base station is within a few feet. I've tried different channels, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, getting rid of WPA, you name it. At first I thought it might be some issue with the USB drive connected to the base station, but copying to another computer on my network is the same. It is very frustrating.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.Thanks. I thought about buying the TC but I'm worried that if my network is operating slowly, which it appears to be, that I'm not going to get the throughput. I also noticed that my windows machine which is on the same network accesses the internet faster as well. I'm wondering if it is something with my MacBook.
BTW - I went to school in Pittsburgh. Great great town. -
Slow page loads over LAN with 500GB TC
Hello,
Forgive me if this has already been touched on, I tried to run through the first six pages and didn't see anything that I thought matched my problem. I saw that there were reports of slow wireless speeds, but I have been experiencing problems over the wired connection to my TC
I have a MBP connected to the TC wirelessly and a Mac Pro with a wired connection to the TC. They both render similar speeds in a speed test ~4Mbits down, but on my Mac Pro, I get excruciatingly slow page loads. Pages often take, on average, 15-20 seconds to come up at all, and some more time to finish loading completely. Meanwhile, I can load the same pages in a few seconds with my MBP over the wireless network.
My cable coming from the TC to my Mac Pro is brand new, its at least CAT5e, and should be able to handle my down speeds without a problem. So I'm at a loss for what could be causing this. Could it be something with the computer and not the TC at all?
Thanks,
ScottWell, creating a test user put me on the right path. Deleting the systemconfiguration folder did not help, but I deleted the following files out of the $user/library/preferences folder:
com.apple.internetconfig.plist
com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
com.apple.internetconnect.plist
com.apple.networkConnect.000a27b47970.plist
com.apple.preference.internet.plist
com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a27b47970.plist
Basically any preference with "Network" or "Internet" in it and everything sped up immediately. Thanks for the help. -
FTP/SFTP/FISH (etc) slow file transfer rate over LAN
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with transferring files over my home network that has been bothering me for quite some time.
I have a 802.11n router which should provide me with the transfer rate up to 150 Mbps (afaik). When I download files from the Internet, 3 MB/s data transfer rate is of no problem.
However, when receiving or sending data over LAN, the transfer rate is much slower (1.8 MB/s).
My rough guess is (after reading some papers on this topic) that TCP protocol is causing this (its flow control feature to be exact), since TCP max window size is too small on Linux by default.
So, setting TCP max window size to a greater number should solve this.
I tried putting this:
# increase TCP max buffer size setable using setsockopt()
# 16 MB with a few parallel streams is recommended for most 10G paths
# 32 MB might be needed for some very long end-to-end 10G or 40G paths
net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
# increase Linux autotuning TCP buffer limits
# min, default, and max number of bytes to use
# (only change the 3rd value, and make it 16 MB or more)
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216
# recommended to increase this for 10G NICS
net.core.netdev_max_backlog = 30000
# these should be the default, but just to be sure
net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_sack = 1
in /etc/sysctl.conf but to no avail.
So either there is no problem with the max window size setting, or the Linux kernel ignores it (maybe because /proc is no longer supported?).
Thanks for any neat ideas.

How to optimize Mac file sharing speeds over LAN?
I got a new NetGear R7000, and I find it very fast for LAN transfers wired or wireless between Macs running OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Testing large (multigigabyte) file transfers over AFP, an early 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.1 connecting to a 2011 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.5, Ethernet speeds can hit 6 GB per min (800 Mbps) real world and wireless 2.06 GB / min (273 Mbps), real world performance.
If I perform a similar test for Snow Leopard on both ends, an early 2011 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 onnecting to a 2010 Mac Mini also running 10.6.8, has Ethernet transfers topping out at about 1.72 Gigabytes per minute for Ethernet (228 Mbps) and 1.07 GB / min (140 Mbps) for Wifi, real world performance.
I am wondering if there is anything I can do to speed up the Snow Leopard AFP networking. (There are some applications that run only in Snow Leopard and I would like to have it network efficiently instead of getting rid of it. The Macbook Pro has a partitioned drive so I can boot between Snow Leopard and Mavericks.)
I know that Apple made some tweaks in file sharing performance in Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and I suspect TCP IP parameters were altered to speed things up dramatically when there were all the complaints about it being slow on Mac Book Airs with 802.11ac. I am curious what Apple did.
I am wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can improve AFP file sharing performance in Snow Leopard. Are there TCP IP parameters, or plist entries, or other hidden settings I can change? Parameters I can tune in sysctl.conf? I am hoping a real network guru can come on here to advise on some advanced techniques I can use to speed up AFP on Snow Leopard. It is the Macs running Snow Leopard that need to be tuned, not the router, as speeds are very fast sharing between Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Also, for any/all Mac OS versions, are there networking parameters that I can tune to speed up transfers that involve a very large number of very small files? Even recent versions of OS X slow down greatly on this.
Thanks in advanceAnyone have any ideas? What kind of speed do others see through gigabit Ethernet, with snow leopard or Lion?

Skyp file transfer on LAN slow for windows and Mac...
Hi,
We are extensively use skype and since we upgrade skype to 6.18 and above ... file transfer on LAN is super slow... to transfer file 200MB it took over 15 minutes but when i'm skype 6.16 it took about 45 seconds... can anyone lemme know to fix it or tweak it on both Mac and windows so i can speed up file transfer on LAN....I've been experiencing the same issue. I keep having to downgrade to 6.16 and cancel automatic updates for this same reason. It's really frustrating as my work involves sendig and receiving files via Skype. Versions 6.18 and up not only are too slow (a large file, for example, that would normally take 18 hours or less to transfer takes 1 week! on 6.18 and higher) but also slow down my whole connection while surfing. 6.16 allows me to transfer at a fast speed and I can watch videos and have a 256k livestream radio going, be on a skype call and still have enough speed to download from the Internet without slowing anything down. This is completely unacceptable. I see that no one has replied to this and nothing has been done to fix this issue. I wonder if Skype even browses through these.

Slow file listings in Finder AND Terminal on shares over wifi
I have a problem with slow directory listing performance with one client machine that accesses our file server over AFP. Here’s the basic setup.
Client1 (MBA,2013,10.9.2) <~> WAP <-> Switch <-> Server (Mini,10.9.2+Server 3.0.3)
Client2 (MBA,2012,10.8.5) <~> WAP <->
Client3 (iMac,2012,10.9.2) <-------->
This server provides DHCP, local DNS and file services for the network.
The issue only affects client1 when connected via wifi, wireless client2 and wired client3 all run full speed. Client1 runs full speed when attached using a wired connection.
The slow directory listing symptoms (5-30sec lag) are noticeable in Finder and Terminal (via ls, find etc) when attached to a share. It only affects file listings, other operations, such as file transfers, server pings, server ssh, as well as general http traffic all operate at full speed. Pings to the sever from client1 are a steady 1-2ms, even during a long lag.
I have read about people having similar problems (slow Finder etc) and I have tried a few suggestions, but I think this issue is a little different because it only occurs when connected over wifi, only for file listings and also affects terminal.

Need help with my Etresoft report
First let me start by saying thank you to everyone that offers help here to people like me who have no idea what to do, youll never know what a relief it is to have this forum and people who are willing to help, you all are so appreciated. Also, please forgive me if Ive posted this in the wrong place or what have you, I really am trying to learn the ropes but have no idea what I am doing. Ive read through 100 of the forums on here to try and trouble shoot my problems with situations that others have gone through but to be honest I hardly understand half of the question much less the answers and I dont want to just start trial and erroring things lol. So here is whats going on, and thank you in advance for any help anyone may be able to give!
I seem to be getting the spinning wheel A LOT lately. We bought the computer used a few years ago and it had a ton of programs on it that we dont know what they are but they didn't seem to affect anything so we just left them be. However, recently, we got that Lacie porsche design 4 tb external hard drive from the mac store to use with time machine and since then it seems things are running pretty poorly system wide. I cant say with certainty that it was exactly the hard drive that made things go downhill because it seems to have been getting worse slowly over the last year or so but the addition of the external hard drive has really been the only new thing that I can think of thats been done. Ive seen everyone ask for the Etresoft report so Ill attach that. Also Ive seen many people say that the CleanMyMac2 is not a good thing. Unfortunately I do have that installed and run that regularly. So Im guessing that is a problem? Please advise as to the best things I can do and I will do it! Thank you again!!!

The first thing I would recommend you do is backup all your files, erase the drive, then reinstall OS X. This way you start fresh without anything installed by the previous owner. Then you can restore just your data from the backup and reinstall any third-party applications you have from scratch. This is the best way to get to a well-running computer.
I assume you have a Snow Leopard DVD, so you would start with it.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can now access the App Store in order to download Mavericks and install it on the computer. -
Slow file transfer between Mac & PC Network - bad checksums?
Howdy all. I've been having a persistent issue with transferring files from my Mac to my Win2003 server. The transfers are always much slower than they should be (compared to the PCs on the network with lesser connections), but even more puzzling, is that it will often go to 95% (or thereabouts) and then take twice as long to finish the remaining percentage as it did to transfer the vast majority of the file.
It's all gigabit from point to point and I've swapped patch cables, router ports, etc.. with a known good performing WinXP box to see if that would make a difference, but it didn't.
I've searched the forums and found some mention of mysteriously slow file transfers using SMB, but nothing conclusive.
I ran a LAN monitoring util on the Mac during a xfer and below is a snippet of the results from the log. No dropped packets, but lots of bad checksums?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed T.

• Monitor Completed •While I have never tried it, Mac supports Firewire networking (TCP/IP over FW) and I know that some PCs do likewise. Mine does.
That being said, it's possible to link your Mac to your PC with a FW cable (both ends must be the large type of connector) and if so, you can transfer at 400 MB/s.
To enable FireWire networking on your Mac, in the Network preferences, at the bottom of the left pane, click the + sign and in the popup window, add Interface: Firewire.
As I said, I have never used it but in theory it would work. It's not at all like using the Target mode, this is a "hot" FW network link that can directly connect two computers.
IMO, it's worth a shot. -

I just purchased an Airport Extreme base station and am having some problems. I could not seem to find an answer to this issue in the archives.
I have a small architecture firm and have 3 computers networked together (iBook G4, mac-mini, and Powermac G5). The G5 is our file server. A typical CAD file size is on the order of 10 mb. Since going wireless with the Airport Extreme, opening these files has become painfully slow - 2 minutes for a 11 mb file, for example.
All computers have a strong airport signal (four bars), and internet connection on all machines is fast.
Security: WPA2
Robustness: ON
Thanks for any help you may have to offer.(I posted this elsewhere, hope this helps you as you did not have any responses. )
Big horrible slowdowns in file transfer over wireless have me pulling my (remaining) hair out.
I had given my Apple Airport base station (b) to my brother in Pakistan after I found a Belkin (g) at Staples for free (after rebates) and have been using it for a while. Not a pretty box but the price is beautiful and it works OK.
My real use for it is for my eMac and a couple of older PowerBooks I keep downstaors as a "music studio" for my music and podcast recording (and transferring upstairs to my server folder over wireless) and web browsing.
All worked OK as I would transfer the files to my PowerBook upstairs (connected Ethernet to a router connected to the wireless router or sometimes directly via Airport connection if laptop was not at my desk). Both configurations worked fine (only limitation being my eMac's (b) speed older Airport speed).
Since 10.4.5 (as that is the last "change" I can see made on my system overall, I have discpovered I cannot even transfer a 3.5 MB file from the eMac to ANY of the other machines. After reading several threads here it seems several people have noticed the HORRIBLE SLOWDOWN if not complete death of Airport usability for file transfer. People are being made to go around changing router settings, channel IDs etc.
That sounds like typical tech support bunk to me. After all, if the channel ID on the wireless router is a problem why is my web browing going on at normal speed but a 120 MB file transfer just told me it will take 2023642128 hours. No, I am not kidding. That is the time it would take to get man to Mars. Someone else was told to hook up the machines over Ethernet. Sure, that works for machines in the same room - and is a bearable temporary solution in that case - but not in an upstairs/downstairs situation. Burning CD-Rs to transfer 120 MB files every time is also not a good way to show off Apple technology.
So, in my humble opinion, some recent update from Apple just broke something in Airport networking or Appleshare. (Much like I have found out that DiskWarrior, a hard disk repair utility will crash after completing a current task unless you downgrade QuickTime from 7.0.4 or something to a lower version. Go figure.)
I love Apple, getting friends to switch all the time, but annoyed at these bugs that basically render standard applications unusable. So far I have not been able to figure out what the problem is.
I already deleted all the network port configurations on the eMac except wireless. Activity Monitor shows 0.1 to 11 kbps speed (yes, that is 0.1 to 11 Kbps not Mbps). No other apps are running, Tried connecting to different machines. All machines can transfer data at high speed except over Airport/wireless.
Hope you can suggest a solution when you find one.

Report generation vi's-save report to file.vi
I am a new user of LabVIEW. I'm using the Report Generation Toolkit VI's to do some customized reports.
1. how can I stop the report from popping up on the front panel when I initialize the report to be done. I know you can use "minimized" but that takes a few seconds to minimize and I would like to NOT see the report I'm generating pop-up at all.
2. I want use this customized report and constantly be saving data when a reset button is pushed. That is save the time stamp, the change in data etc on a continuous basis in 1 folder. Right now when I use the "Save Report to File. Vi" it over writes the previous data saved and all that data is lost. I need to be constantly saving all the data generated to be able to look back at it.
Thanks.Hi shaef,
Which version of LV and Report Generation Toolkit are you using?
Assuming you are using LV 8.5 and RGT 1.1.2, then the attached screenshot should offer some help. Basically, you need to wire in the existing file as your template in order to not just overwrite the old data. You also need to make use of the series of 'Append' VIs that are in the toolkit.
Let us know if this works for you,

How do I create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user
This is why I think I need to.
My computer got hit by lightening, and I may have created a new user account through netinfo rather than system preferences /accounts/+user. Mail used to open twice, but no longer. Now, Safari askes me for my keychain password twice, Spotlight can't find a folder on the computer when the search is restricted to folder and computer, though the folder is there and easyfind finds it, and when System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy has the hard drive icon added, then deleted, Spotlight still does not find anything. (Yes, everything is backed up, on CD, DVD, and online.) Microsoft Tec Support says
"Here is a summary of the key points of the case for your records.
When you contacted us on August 8, you had requested assistance with Microsoft Office 2004, as your installation of the updates was unable to find the correct version of the software to update. After creating a New MAC User, we identified the issue to be with a corrupt MAC User account, and not a Microsoft issue. "
I believe Microsoft. So, creating a new user was easy.
But copying files uses up too much hard drive (movies, music), and may miss keychains, preferences, mail, address book, and documents. Since Spotlight no longer works, who knows what is happening. (Yes, I've repaired persmissions, and disk repair. No change). I'm using up my hard drive trying to move files to the new user. If I share files, or put them into a public folder, then delete the old user, will I still have the old user's files in the new user's account? It is not clear to me what I should be trying to do in order to create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user. Thanks.
My responses will be slow, because I have to drive to town to use the internet. I've ordered a new airport which may take care of that problem. SO be patient.Hey -
I need to do the EXACT same thing, but have no idea how. Has anyone out there done this?
My situation is a tad different..this is a new Mac (and I'm a brand new Mac user). Tons of querks occur under my original account (videos won't run, Safari won't support certain plug-ins). I spent 6 hours on the phone w/ 4 different Apple Reps and nobody could fix it. A rep finally looked at my MacBook Pro in person today. He created a new account just to see if that would work and under that new account, everything works perfectly fine (no querks, can view video). He tried switching a million settings in my original account to no avail.
He said to create a new account (as he did) and move my files over to the new account and then go back to the original and delete it. How do you do this?! I can't figure it out! I've got a new account created, but of course it just has the default folders in it w/ the little red icons next to them! Thanks in advance!
