Etting video off a sony dvd handycam

I've got a sony dvd handycam (dcr-dvd602e) and want to get the video into imovie. Problem is that it records to mini dvd ( wont work in macbook) it doesnt have a firewire connection, and it records to mpeg2. Did a course on imovies with a jvc camcorder and was sweet. ant ideas on what i need to do ( or do I buy a new camcorder ( got the sony because of its cheapish waterproof housing)

If tech specs data I looked at are correct, this is an analog only playback unit -- i.e., not only no FireWire connector but no USB either. If so, then you would need another device to act as an analog to digital converter for you. This could be in the form of a dedicated external DAC (Digital-Analog Converter) or another device such as a camcorder or TV tuner with a "Pass Through" option to convert your analog signals to digital and pass them through to your MacBook. If you are lucky, you might have a friend who could loan you such a device (as Winston frequently puts it, for the price of a few pints of your favorite brew).

  • How do I capture video recording made by DVD Handycam?

    Hi,
I have used a Sony DVD Handycam as a second camera during a gig. I can't capture this to Final Cut Express 4, Not I to iMovie, either! I can watch the recording on my Mac via a USB cable in DVD player (maybe this isn't relevant). The camera has no firewire connection. Is it possible to export the files on my MacBook Pro to a format recognised by FCE. What format do I need for that? MPEG4? How do I do it?
PS People on this forum have been very helpful before. Thanks again.
    Karl

    Software Method:
Step 1: Make sure the disc is finalized in the camera.
Step 2: Load the disc into a tray-loading DVD drive. NEVER, EVER put a miniDVD disc into a slot loading drive.
Step 3: Use a program like MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that works natively with your NLE. Typically that would be QuickTime DV/DVCPro.
    Hardware Method:
Step 1: Make sure the disc has been finalized in the camera.
Step 2: Connect a DVD player's analog outputs to a qualified DV device (DV camcorder, VTR or converter).
Step 3: Connect the DV device's Firewire port to your Mac.
Step 4: Capture in FCE as you would any other non-controllable video source.
Tips for the future: don't use DVD camcorders to acquire footage that will be edited.

  • Capturing audio as well as video with a sony AVCHD handycam

    Capturing from card inquiry.
I am new to CS6. I have a sony HD handycam model HDR XR350VE. I am trying to import my footage from it into CS6 but the audio is not being imported. I have read the instructions (3 different versions of the instructions!) and realise that I need to import all the BDMV files from the camera – stream, playlist and clip info files, and not just the MTS files.
It is made more confusing as my second camera - a sony HXR70p is importing perfectly (all the audio files as well as video) without a problem, and to make it even more confusing, the 350 camera works perfectly  (imports audio and video fine) with premiere elements, so the problem is not with the camera.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

Copy the entire folder structure from the camera to your hard drive and import from there

  • Sony DVD Handycam

Have recently purchased a Sony Cancorder - DVD203E. When I attached the supplied USB cable to my Powerbook a message came up - You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read.
Is there any way that I can view the mini DVD on my Mac? And if I can then will I be able to edit using iDVD.
The Picture Package CD which came with the camcorder can not be used with a Mac!
I had naively hoped that it would be as easy as connecting my Sony digital camera to the Mac!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

You may want to post your iDVD question on the iDVD forum: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=128
I can't speak for Sony's particular formatting, but a normal DVD-Video is made up of compressed MPEG-2 video files that haves been muxed and formatted to the DVD standard. Essentially DVD-Video is a delivery format - not an editing format. However, there are programs available to convert a DVD's VOB files to an editable format. Look for DVDxDV.
As for playing the DVD recorded by your Sony camcorder, have you tried playing the disc in your Mac instead of from the camcorder? Will it play properly in a reular DVD player?

  • Used HandBrake to rip video off of my dvd..now I want to edit it in i-movie

the program put the 'rip' to itunes in one or another into movie. neither will open in i-movie. how do I convert this so that I can open it in imovie and edit it to put on to youtube?

Jon, Can you explain this please. What is a compatible compression format and what are extraneous data tracks? I ask as I am trying to edit a file that I made with Nero/PC based and now have used Handbrake to encode that to m4v format and iMovie does not recognize it. I am having a problem with so many various formats.
By this I mean with HandBrake you must convert to an MP4 container with MPG4/AAC or H.264/AAC compressed data using compatible video profiles and not include things like a chapter track. The safest approach would be to use an iPod or TV preset and turn off all extraneous tracks. iMovie '08 will not import files using third-party codecs, hybrid profiles, or certain types of data tracks.

  • HT4528 How do I get my videos off onto a DVD

I am trying to figure out how to get my videos onto a DVD. I did get them onto one but why can't I view these videos on my Playstation3?

Home movies right? Ones taken by iPhone I assume??
Once you've put the video file on your Mac or PC you need software to convert that file to a readable DVD file and then burn software to burn it to the DVD... If you burned just a straight .mov file to a DVD I'm not sure PS3 has the codec to play that, however, if you burn as a DVD format with Video and Auido TS folders... it plays fine...
    What steps have you tried.

  • Sony DVD Handycam -rw VR mode files to transfer to MPeg4

I have successfully transferred my DVD clips off my DVD - R disc (VOB files) using Shiiva and the free trial of DVDxDV. Thank you all for the advice. My next delema is extracting the VRO files off the DVD-RW shot in VR mode (this means I can split scenes on the camera and delete them). I like shooting in that mode because I can delete unwanted footage keeping my files effecient! I have finalized the disc and cannot use the above programs to recognize the VRO file.
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to macbook forum,
Could you post your camera model / type, so we can check that out for you in order to give you better answers.
Or you can check this link for camcorder that supported on new iMovie 7.x.x.

  • How to pull the videos off the burned DVD

I burned all my stuff on a dvd and was wondering if i can get them back off the burned dvd

    Hello Derek,
Yes you can but you'll need to download and install MPEG Streamclip, and purchase and install Apple's MPEG Playback Components.
You can then rip the DVD files and save them as Quicktime movies.

  • Unable to capture video off of Hitachi DVD+HDD combined hybrid to iMovie

I have video captured on a hard drive in my Hitachi consumer grade camera. I am trying to capture that media into iMovie. iMovie is not recognizing the files on the camera and I am unable to select the media to transfer. I am connecting to my Macbook using a 6pin to USB cord. The camera ONLY has a 6 pin and A/V outlet. I have been unsuccessful capturing any media. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. I am using iMovie 6.0.3
I have heard that I should use firewire, however I can not find a 6 pin to firwire cord. If you know a way to work around having a firewire cord or where I can fine the necessary wire, I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

iMovie HD 6 won't accept mpg-2 compressed files
With luck, you might be able to use them in iMovie '08 (but your camera isn't on the supported list).

  • Import video, stills from Sony Mini DVD-RW?

    Hi.
I just bought a Sony DVD 403. How do you import video from the Sony DVD-RW?
When trying to drag the files from the mini DVD I get "Unsupported File Type" into iDVD, iMovie HD, Quicktime, and Final Cut Express. (All are the latest versions). Thank you for your response.
    Walter

    Thank you Len!
I wouldn't mind spending the 20 dollars if it lets me import my videos from the
Sony DVD-RW. I find it odd that iDVD plays the videos without anything of the mini DVD alright but I can't save them? Are you sure about that JPEG 2? When I
do a get info it does not say what those files are. Thank you for all your help.
The USB on it is useless, I can't figure why no fire wire and I for sure thought
I could import from a DVD. What a disappointment. You have great video and
sound and can't get it into the G4.

  • Using Sony DVD model camcorder with Mac

Does anyone have any idea how to use the Sony DVD Handycam with a Mac? I can watch the DVDs on the IMAC but I can not download the DVDs to imovie to edit my own home videos. The Sony people told me to buy a PC, some help.

This DVD camera records using MPEG-2. That is the same as most all of the new Hard drive cameras.
This format is for playback and is not intended to be used as an editing format.
You will need to convert that format into a DV format that imovie can use.
MPEG Streamclip http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html is free and Apple's QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
is about $20.00. They are the tools that you need to download to convert these files.
Once you have done that, export to DV Stream (.dv) and import it into iMovie.

  • Sony DVD Camcorder to iMac

I've been trying to figure out a way to import video from my Sony DVD camcorder. I've searched these forums and so far much of the advice is not to buy Sony DVD camcorders. While I understand the good intentions of this advice, I like all the other advantages which the Sony DVD camcorders offer.
That being said, I have two questions which will help me decide whether I really should return the Sony DCR-DVD 205 and/or use a Sony DCR-DVD 305 instead:
    1) Some others have suggested exporting the A/V out from the DVD camcorder and feeding it into the analog port of a DV camcorder. I happen to have a DV camcorder (broken lens but fine for this purpose) which can record the analog input onto a DV tape. This allows me to use the firewire out from the DV camcorder to the iMac just fine. I have tried this technique and while it is a hassle it appears to work well. Here's my question: Am I losing a significant amount of quality or resolution by converting DVD to analog to DV to iMac? The picture quality seems OK so far but I'm wondering if I am missing something.
    2) So my next question is thiis: Is it worth getting the 305 model instead? Unlike the 205, the 305 has a USB 2.0 port. But from everything I have seen, USB 2.0 ports are far from ideal when it comes to transferring digital quality video.
Thanks in advance. I am going a bit crazy trying to figure out what to do about this.
    iMac g5

welcome TeamIguana to the  board ...
you've done your research on this board about DVDcorders, so you do know, the iApps don't support such devices ... you miss the convenience of simply plug-in/hit import/done... and some others...
    you have two options:
convert from dvd (please use the forum search for that popular issue), or, as you wrote, a playback-analoge-digital conversion...
the loss in pic quality happens while playback a dvd...- you record in a codec called mpeg2, which is a very, very effective compressor...- a standard iM project of 2h=~26GB gets compressed with mpeg2 to fit onto a 4.7Gb single-layer dvd-r...
to be so effective, mpeg uses different "tricks", e.g. it doesn't store every frame of the 30fps a video contains... dv (as on miniDV, or iM's native internal codec) does so... as you probably know: mpeg2 is a delivery format, no edit format...
so answer to 1): due to mpeg standards, you have a loss of pic quality. any miniDV would be ... better.- but it has to fullfill your tastes and standards, if it is ok to you.. just do it
ad 2) iMovie doesn't support the import via usb2.- when you're lucky, you get some Sony-made app with that device which allows to remotely control the corder via usb2 to force it to playback/stream the video to the Mac.. HardDrivecorders behave like some ordinary harddrive, easy to drag'n drop file from them to the Mac.. but a DVDcorder? even, when you hit manually "play"... how should your Mac know what to do with that stream of data coming via usb??
you guess it allready; I'm not convinced by DVDcorders
so, just to feed my personal curiosity:
I like all the other advantages which the Sony DVD camcorders offer.
    ... which one?

  • I can not transfer video from my sony handycam DCR-HC36 to ivideo in imac

I can not transfer video from my sony handycam DCR-HC36 to ivideo in imac. Help!  THANK-YOU!!

Take both back to the salesman in the store and ask him to show you how it works, or, if he can't, then maybe you want to make an exchange or return. Unfortunately, it appears that the salesperson didn't look carefully enough at the camera specs to realize that the MacBook doesn't have the video input needed. You can capture the audio from the camera through the MacBook audio line-in, but that's about it.
You need some kind of USB TV/tuner input device that has the plugs needed to connect to the camera and import the video into the MacBook. Cameras with FW ports allow direct uploading of the digital video to the computer.
An external DVD drive that can load the miniDVD's in its tray is another possibility.

  • UJ-845 + Sony DVD-R media: VIDEO at 8X, DATA at only 2X????

    Drive: Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845
    Revision: D8PB
    Media: Sony DVD-R, 250MR47LS3. 120 min, 4.7 GB, 1x-8x compatible.
When I create a Finder burn folder and try to burn a data DVD, to the Sony DVD, the only choices it offers me are 1X and 2X.
But, when I burn a video DVD, I am not asked for a burn speed... and in fact the burn takes places as 8X. And the resulting DVD passes verification and plays perfectly.
    (Apple-branded DVD-R's offer 1X, 2X, 4X, and 8X for burning data).
Why should video and data DVD maximum burn speeds be different?

    Finally......
TDK "video" DVD-R, 1-8x. On sale at Target stores (you might need to go to the next aisle, as it is marketed for "video" recording, so it was near the VHS tapes...). $14 for 25. Blue label on package, UPC code 020356485986.
"drutil status" gives the media code TTG02 and 4x burning speed!
