Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts not working in Indesign CS5

Hi I created some Maths Text books about 5 years ago in an older Adobe Indesign program. I now have to re-edit the files using Indesign CS5.
The Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts i used back in 2005 now do not display in Indesign 5 when i open up the program. The other Euclid Symbol Fonts do. I think that they are all truefonts.
I have attached an example.
I am using a Mac running OSX 10.6.8.
http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/tsn109.htm    <-- this is an error log from 'MathType' the guys who created the font - yet unsure what this actually means for me
Here is the example

Congratulations on fixing the problem yourself! Hopefully our article (to which you linked) was of some help in that process. Let us know if you need anything else.

  • CS4 (XP Pro)--missing bold and italic fonts for PMingLiu font

    I'm working on a book that's been translated into Chinese. The Chinese text I'm using was sent to me in Microsoft Word using the PMingLiu font. While in Word, there are some characters that appear in bold and/or italics, but those disappear when I try any means of importing into ID (as in placing the file as a Word document, placing the file as rtf, or even just copying and pasting from Word).
    As I've seen mentioned in other topics on this forum, no matter what I do, I get the pink boxes that I have to highlight and change to PMingLiu (slow but not a huge problem). But I really do need the bolds and italics. I only seem to have "Regular" PMingLiu--don't have the bold and italic varieties listed in my font list.
    Are those fonts available somewhere to download?
    Thanks so much to the oh-so helpful readers of this forum!

    Microsoft Office applications as well as many other applications allow you to "bold" or "italicize" content even when the "bold" or "italic" version of the font is either not installed or in fact might not even exist. Artificial bold usually consists of stroking the character slightly in addition to filling it. Artificial italic is performed by skewing (obliqueing) the character to simulate the look of an italic style. Although these artificial techniques sometimes yield usable results, they are typically NOT supported by graphic arts programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop. Typically, bold and italic faces are typical of most but not all "Latin" font families but are less common for non-Latin font families.
    In your particular case, I suspect that artificial bold, italic, and/or combinations of bold and italic were used with the font in question. InDesign does "the right thing" by indicating that no such font exists. If you want to simulate bold, let the characters in question be stroked in addition to being filled. The width of the stroke will obviously depend on the point size of the text and the style of the characters. You will need to experiment a bit. For italics, skew the characters to the right; again you will need to experiment.
    Doing a quick web search, from what I can best determine, there are no bold or italic versions of PMingLiu available either for free or for paid licensing.

  • Bold and italic fonts in dynamic text fields.

    I have a dynamic text field with the text "IMAGES". The font
    is Arial, it has BOLD and ITALIC checked, and has basic Latin fonts
    embedded. Now, I use Actionscript to change the text:
    textField.text = "IMAGES";
    Suddenly the text disappears! Now, it seems to me that since
    BOLD and ITALIC are checked on the text field, changing the .text
    value should simply change the text itself, which should then be
    rendered in bold and italic, and since I have bold+italic Latin
    glyphs embedded, it should display properly. But what's clearly
    happening is that when I set the text using Actionscript, it is
    attempting to display the NORMAL font instead, and since it's not
    embedded, it won't display. I know this because if I create another
    proxy text field off the screen and embed the NORMAL Arial glyphs,
    the original text field's text will display just fine - as
    normal-weight text.
    But why is this? Do I have to use a TextFormat object to set
    the text to Bold and Italic EVERY time I want to dynamicaly change
    the text? This seems silly. I simply want my text field to be bold
    and italic every time the text changes, and NO normal text!
    Any ideas?

    I met the same problem using ActionScript3 and Flash Professional CS5. There are two problems with dynamic TextFields:
    - When you set style "Bold" for a text field in CS5, the "bold" property is not available in the TextField object in ActionScript, its defaultTextFormat.bold is alway false; I don't know if we can get this property anywhere else.
    - When you change the text of the dynamic TextField object, its style changes to normal no matter whether it was bold previously.
    This is really a bug in TextField, Adobe should fix this to implement TextField in an expected way.

    When Im working in design view for some reason my links are not working when I press ctrl and left click. To make them work I have to right click and select follow link.

    I presume you're talking about Live View, because links don't work in Design view.
    One thing you can try is selecting View > Live View Options > Follow Links Continuously, or select the option from the Live View Options menu in the Browser Navigation toolbar.
    It works only for the current tab, but is useful if you're following a lot of links.

  • Cross reference or hyperlinking not working for InDesign CS5 Book to ePub

    I cannot get hyperlinks or cross reference links to work when generating an ePub from InDesign CS5. (7.0.0.355, Mac OS 10.6.2)
    Here's how to recreate a simple test demonstrating the issue.
    1. Create a new InDesign Book (File -> New -> Book)
    2. Create document one (File -> New -> Document)
    3. Create a text box and type "Table of Contents"
    4. Create document two (File -> New -> Document)
    5. Create a text box in it and type "Story One"
    6. Create a new paragraph style and assign it to the Story One text
    7. Save document 2. I just kept the name Untitled-2.xhtml
    8. Back in document 1, add a cross-reference and select document 2, the style you created, and then "Story One". "Story One" should now appear under the previously typed Table of Contents text, and when highlighed, should show it is an active cross reference in the Hyperlinks panel.
    9. Save document 1. I just kept the name Untitled-1.xhtml
    10. Add both documents to the Book and save the book.
    11. From the Book panel, select Export Book to EPUB...
    12. Save the epub file and open it in Adobe Digital Editions.
    Note that the text "Story One" appears as a hyperlink but when clicked does not switch to the document 2. It does nothing apparent when clicked.
    Looking at the XHTML source for the first document, it is immediately evident why. The filename for document 2.thml is missing.  It looks like this: <a href="#anchor-anchor">
    When it should be : <a href="Untitled-2.xhtml#anchor-anchor">
    The same thing works if you create a hyperlink instead of a cross reference.
    I note then when I use the option to go to the destinate reference in the Cross Link (hyperlink) panel, it does switch to the second InDesign docuemtn. So the cross reference is functioning (in InDesign). But the link is broken in the ePub for the above mentioned reason.
    Bug? Something I'm overlooking?
    Entire source of Untitled-1.xhtml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <title>Untitled-1.xhtml</title>
    <link href="template.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="untitled-1">
    <div class="generated-style">
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override">Table of Contents</span></p>
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override"><a href="#anchor-anchor">“story one”</a></span></p>
    </div>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>

    As far as I can tell, it has NOT yet been fixed in CS5.5.  I'm having the same problem.  I have about 90 hyperlinks to fix.
    And the explanation that Teus Dejong gives indicates it's not going to be that helpful:  "we have found that only the links in documents split by the CS5 exporter will be fixed. For books the script does only work for references to earlier documents in the book, not for forward references. This means in practice that for most books the script will not repair the links and should be seen as a means to add the year only. At the moment I see no way to repair this, because the book epub output of InDesign does not contain sufficient information to repair links referencing forward to others documents in a book."
    It's pretty discouraging.

  • 'Package' command not working in Indesign CS5.5

    Hi Everyone. I am using Indesign CS5.5, and cannot create a 'Package' folder that collects all fonts and graphic assets used in a document I am working on. Using File>Package, the progress bar hurries through very quickly (way too quickly for a 80Mb file!) and the resulting 'Package ' folder is empty - no fonts, no images!
    Has anyone else experienced this? And did they solve the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    IDML never contains the images. It contains references to the images.
    The images aren't altered. The person who sent the file to you needs to relink the images to the InDesign file in the Links panel.

  • EPS font not previewing in Indesign CS5 overprint view

    Hi,
    After importing an eps logo into Indesign CS5 it previews fine when Overprint Preview is turned off, but when overprint view is turned on only the logo icon appears, the font disappears.
    The font has been outlined - the logo is solid white and appearing on a solid black background. When exporting the file to pdf the font also disappears. I have tried saving the file as an AI file with the same result.
    Any ideas?

    First of all you should be using native Illustrator .ai files with PDF compatibility turned on (this shows up in the options dialogue after you save).
    Your logo was converted from artwork originally done in black with the Overprint Fill attribute turned on. Overprint tells the output device not to know out the colour below the logo. When printing black, this makes sense. When printing white, this effectively makes the logo vanish, since the only way to print white is by knocking out.
    Open the logo in Illustrator and select all the vanishing white artwork (probably a Select All will do). Open the Attributes panel and turn off Overprint Fill. Save as an Illustrator file and place that.

  • PDFindSysFont fails for few Bold and Italic fonts

    Leo and Aandi,
    I am using below code for getting the font. But for few fonts like "Century-BoldItalic" it is returning NULL. Can you please tell the reason why this is faling. Also how to coin this font face name to make this work. It would be useful if you provide relevant header file information.
    objPDEFontAttrs.name = ASAtomFromString(pFaceName);
    objSysFont = PDFindSysFont(&objPDEFontAttrs, sizeof(objPDEFontAttrs), 0);
    thanks,

    Through Enumeration callback I am getting the font face name as ASAtom. Can you please tell how to get the string content from ASAtom. This is a very basic question I thought of asking you very long time back. Sorry.

  • Selection and Type Tools not working in InDesign CC for Mac

    I have just recently downloaded InDesign CC (I use Mac OSX.9.2) and got the World Tools plugin to typeset in different languages.
    However, I am having trouble using the selection and type tools. In about the first half of the file, the type tool displays the pointer/dashed box/I-beam icon and doesn't put the cursor in the text when I click on it. I can't click to select text as I should be able to, and if I try to click and drag, all I do is end up creating another text frame. But in about the second half of the file, the selection and type tools work the way they should.
    When I click and hold on the type tool, the cursor changes to the crosshairs icon for creating text frames and the "W: H: " dialogue box for text frames appears.
    How can I get the tools to work properly in the entire document? Is anyone else having this problem?

    @Cindy – usually all 3rd party developers will provide some information for installing and uninstalling their products. First see if you can find some information on their web sites.
    Also there should be a dedicated Adobe Extension Manager app where you can look up the installed parts of InDesign. Since I do not have InDesign CC installed, I do not know exactly, but its name should be something like "Adobe Extension Manager CC".
    If you start this app it will show all parts installed with InDesign (or other apps that are installed).
    Usually at the bottom of the list are the 3rd party installed components. They do not state "Adobe Incoroprate System" as author. Never uninstall (remove) the Adobe ones!
    Here a screen grab from my German Adobe Extension Manager CS5:
    If you select one, a new option is available at the right. In my case here the "Entfernen" button ("Remove" in English).

  • Autocorrect not working in InDesign CS5 - Help? :)

    Hi there,
    To save time, I've set up autocorrect to insert repetitive phrases that I need in my documents by entering keystokes such as 'zz' and 'pp' etc. etc. Now, these autocorrect features work fine with a new document, however on the templates that I need them for they refuse to work. I've made sure that autocorrect is enabled in the main preferences menu and I've also made sure that these specific documents have the autocorrect function ticked. Can anyone please help me...? I'm stumped! Perhaps it's something to do with the language of the document but I'm not really sure where to look.
    Thanks very much.

    "Autocorrect" doesn't retroactively correct a document -- quoted from the relevant Help page (
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6f52a.html):
    By turning on Autocorrect, you can allow capitalization errors and common typing mistakes to be replaced while you type.

  • b and i tags not working in StyleableTextField for mobile development

    I'm trying to dynamically produce TextArea instances in a Flex mobile app that implement html formatting.  I've made a lot of progress, but simple <b> and <i> tags are not being rendered correctly.
    My current hypothesis is that I need to embed the italic and bold fonts.  I am currently not embedding fonts for these particular TextArea instances at all -- they are rendering using the system font.  In my previous experience, this eliminates problems with rendering <b> and <i> text.  However, when deploying on mobile platforms, I don't know for sure if there is a bold or italic system font natively available.
    If I need to embed the bold and italic fonts for the tags to process correctly, does anyone know which font(s) I should embed and how I should name them so that the html will be able to find them and render correctly?  I am applying a CSS to these TextArea instances in the full app, so I can do any font embedding there if necessary.  I am planning to compile this app for both iOS and Android, in case that makes a difference.
    Below is a simplified example of the code I'm using.  The TextArea that is generated is formatted honoring the <br /> tags, but ignoring the <b> and <i> tags.
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    import mx.events.FlexEvent;
    import spark.components.TextArea;
    import spark.components.supportClasses.StyleableTextField;
    import spark.skins.mobile.TextAreaSkin;
    protected function application1_creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
              var textArea0:TextArea = new TextArea();
              textArea0.setStyle("skinClass", TextAreaSkin);
              addElement(textArea0);
              var styleableTextField0:StyleableTextField = StyleableTextField(textArea0.textDisplay);
              styleableTextField0.multiline = true;
              styleableTextField0.htmlText = "<b>bold</b><br /><i>italic</i><br />normal";

    Huh!  I tried tracing the htmlText property after formatting, and the bold and italic tags are not there anymore.  Unexpected, but consistent with the results.  Thanks for suggesting that test.  Here is the line where I assign the htmlText property:
    styleableTextField0.htmlText = "normal<br/><i>italic</i><br/><b>bold</b><br/><a href='http://www.google.com/'>link</a>";
    Here is the section where I create the StyleSheet and assign it to the StyleableTextField:
    var styles:String =
      "@font-face{ fontFamily: Arial; src: url('assets/fonts/Arial.ttf'); embedAsCFF: false;}" +
      "@font-face{ fontFamily: Arial; src: url('assets/fonts/Arial Italic.ttf'); fontStyle: italic; embedAsCFF: false;}" +
      "@font-face{ fontFamily: Arial; src: url('assets/fonts/Arial Bold.ttf'); fontWeight: bold; embedAsCFF: false;}" +
      "a { color: #FFE043; textDecoration: underline; } " +
      "a:active{ color: #ffffff;}" +
      "b{fontWeight:bold; fontFamily: Arial;} " +
      "i{fontStyle:italic; fontFamily: Arial;}";
    var myStyleSheet:StyleSheet = new StyleSheet();
    myStyleSheet.parseCSS(styles);
    styleableTextField0.styleSheet = myStyleSheet;
    And here is the trace statement
    trace( styleableTextField0.htmlText); // <TEXTFORMAT RIGHTMARGIN="21" INDENT="10" LEADING="2"><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial" SIZE="16" COLOR="#FFFFFF" LETTERSPACING="0" KERNING="0">normal</FONT></P></TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT RIGHTMARGIN="21" INDENT="10" LEADING="2"><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial" SIZE="16" COLOR="#FFFFFF" LETTERSPACING="0" KERNING="0">italic</FONT></P></TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT RIGHTMARGIN="21" INDENT="10" LEADING="2"><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial" SIZE="16" COLOR="#FFFFFF" LETTERSPACING="0" KERNING="0">bold</FONT></P></TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT RIGHTMARGIN="21" INDENT="10" LEADING="2"><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial" SIZE="16" COLOR="#FFFFFF" LETTERSPACING="0" KERNING="0"><A HREF="http://www.google.com/" TARGET="">link</A></FONT></P></TEXTFORMAT>
    Lots of code modification going on behind the scenes, it would seem.  Any idea as to why the bold and italic tags are being stripped out when the formatting process happens?  Any idea of what steps I could take next?  Thanks for all your help so far!
    BTW, here's a screen capture of what the text looks like at this point:

  • PDFExport fonts. How they are detected, difference between bold and italic.

    Hi,
    i am experiencing issues with PDFExport mainly because i don't understand how the engine detects fonts in the original document.
    First i will explain my issue:
    PDFExport is used on linux machine environment.
    Copyright reasons prevents me from using windows fonts for PDFExport. I downloaded some open source fonts, most of time they are working fine. the issues that i have are with the variations the fonts. italicized and bold.
    Lets take an example of a .doc file. the file contains Hebrew characters some of them are bolded some italicized and some are regular. the font that .doc used is a windows font called David.
    When i use PDFExport with the original David fonts everything works fine and converted correctly to PDF. Since i cannot use windows fonts i resorted to using the Open Source fonts, they too have similar in style to David. they have bold version, italicized version and regular version.
    When i use the open source fonts the detection of the font is incorrect. the entire document becomes italic. when i remove the italic version of the font everything is bold. and when i remove the bold version everything becomes regular. -- i am missing the bold and italic styles when they are used in the document.
    (note that the original document can use any font it wants not restricted to the Copyright issue)
    if i understood how the detection worked, i could modified the open source fonts that i have so that it will detect correctly all the different style (bold and italicized ) correctly.
    my first question:
    How can i use the Open source fonts and also not lose the bold and italicized styles?
    my second question:
    2. Is there a way to recieve via the API which fonts the engine looked for and didn't find? it can help me to better understand which fonts i need. and may be look for them and bring them manually.
    sometimes even when i used the entire windows fonts folder still the fonts where missing or incorrect. (in the resulted converted PDF 'squares' instead of characters). an API like this may help me look for the missing fonts.
    my third question:
    is there a general guide or Standard which fonts to use. i wish to use the minimum number of fonts which will get the job done. i.e characters will be visible and not squares, styles (bold and italicized) should not be lost.
    my forth question:
    How do the engine choose which font to use?

    These are very deep technical questions and I assume it will be difficult to find anyone who knows answers on this forum.
    You will need to speak with Outside In people (you could also try other conversion component such as OpenOfficeConversion - see http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/doc.1111/e10800/c03_pdfi_all.htm#IBRAG238). Contacts to OIT are available at Oracle Outside In Technology, or try to create a SR via Metalink.
