European languages

i have a database with a characterset of AL32UTF8. It will store data in various european language including slokian, lithuanian etc. However, when i view the data on a web page using php all of the accents are missing even though everything is correct in the database. does anybody kow what i am doing wrong

do you set <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> in your <head></head>
if not - try this and everything should be running fine.

Is there any way how to display Central European Languages (Slovak, Czech, Polish, Hungarian) in id3-tags in Creative MuVu TX player correctly? As I see... [Creative MediaSource Organizer -> Settings -> Language] this is only possible for Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian language.

Custom Installation for non European languages

Hi,
While installing JRE (particularly 1.4.2_XX ) in custom mode, second option enables user to support for additional languages.
The disk size requirement is 18 MB but after installation i figured out that it takes ~8 MB.
As per documentation at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/intl/locale.doc.html#jfc-table , it states that JDK on windows has language support installed as a default but for JRE custom installation is required.
I have following question related to this installation
- What files are updated with this installation? I found few files e.g. charset.jar , font files are installed within JRE installation directory.
- Does this installation updates/adds any Windows System files/font/registry?
The question has arrived as our Swing application hangs with JRE and works fine with on JDK on event of inserting thai character into JTextPane.
Any help will be highly appreciated!!!

The custom feature you are refering to is related to this RFE:
4508848 "Small" J2RE for Windows should include Western European languages

It implies selecting "support for additional languages" would include lib/charset.jar and lib/ext/localedata.jar.
This feature was also described in http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/changes.html
Internationalization
The following changes have been made to internationalization functionality in J2SE 1.4.2.
* Installation of the J2RE on Windows has changed, with impact on the supported locales. There now is a single installer, which by default installs a runtime with support for European languages if the Windows host system only supports such languages, or a runtime with support for all languages if the Windows host system supports at least one non-European language. Users can request installation of additional languages in a custom setup. Regarding your second question, I received the answer from our install engineer:
Yes, the installer creates many registries, and we copy java.exe/javaw.exe/javaws.exe to the Windows system directory.
I am not sure why your Swing application hangs with JRE. Did you select the "support for additional language" option during installation? (I assume you did, correct?)

Display european languages in TERMINAL

Hi, all.
I'm doing a project using JAVA currently, and need to display some european languages in terminal. However, some special characters cannot be displayed properly,like <C3><A9><C3><A2>,<C3><A9>.
The file is in French and saved as UTF-8, the terminal character encoding is also set as UTF-8. I also want to know how you guys display language that isn't enlgish in terminal.
That might give me some clues.
I am using a Apple Mac, but the solution should be similar to Windows.

HELP Files opening in Japanese & E. European language

Of late when I open some files that I have created, or saved as web archives originally in English it opens in Japanese or a east European or Slavic language. I have not knowingly made any major changes to the OS recently. Does anyone have any ideas, is there a way to reset the language of the machine? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You may have a font substitution problem. If you could send me a screenshot I could perhaps confirm that. Click on my name for the address. The fonts the often cause trouble are Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic.

Problem with Non European Language

Hi there,
I'm working on a presentation in english that has to be translated in arabic language.
The problem is when I'm doing the translation with the arabic language the lay out it all fine. BUT when I'm sending (via the net) the files to two of my collegues, the lay out is then all wonky. That doesn't hapened with the english only with the arabic. I tryed even with a bundle version and it's exactly the same.
I don't know what to do as my lay out is fine but not them.
I fel like h-keynote can't cope with the arabic language..but I need this layout to be the same than mine when I'm sending to the people who are going to do the presentation.
Any idea to help me??

They are not necessarly using the same version. I will ask them to get the last one so we will have all the same.
Perhaps that will help. You should also make sure they have the same Arabic fonts on their machines that you used for your file.

European language problem

There are a number of possibilities...
Try to figure out where the chars get mangled: does the jdbc driver return them correctly, does some bit of code after that break them, ...
A really correct solution would map the characters to ampersand versions "ä" etc. In practice, I find that eight-bit works fine at least on all major browsers.
There are also some character set headers in HTTP. I've never had to explore those.
Finally, this is the likely fix: put this in you web server's startup script:
LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1
export LC_CTYPE
The exact name of the suitable locale varies by operating system, but is likely <mumble>ISO<mumble>8859-<digit>.
8-bit chars broke around JDK1.2. Always requires LC_CTYPE or explicit settings when opening I/O streams, including db connections and HTTP streams.

Report fonts mapping and PDF output problem(Easten European languages)

Hi experts,
I have such a problem.
If i run oracle reports(10g) via reports builder all layouts looks fine.
When i run them in PDF format via application server - report text and numbers strech out off frames, also textfields and text itself becomes bigger in size.
Aplication server runs over windows OS.
Uifont.ali file looks:

Arial..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
Arial...Bold.. = "Arialbd.ttf"
Arial..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
Arial..Plain... = "Arial.ttf"
Arial..... = "Arial.ttf"
"Times New Roman"...Bold.. = "TIMESBD.TTF"
"Times New Roman"..Italic... = "TIMESI.TTF"
"Times New Roman"..... = "TIMES.TTF"
I think the problem is with Lithuanian(baltic) letters in the text. If i do not map fonts in uifont.ali file i get PDF report without the
lithuanian alphabet letters, but in this case it looks fine(The same as in report builder)

For the html output issue , there is a patch available on top of 9021. Please contact your Oracle support representative to get a 90211 patch nd apply the one-off patch of Bug 2472932.
For PDF, please ensure that you are setting the NLS_LANG in the server config file using the dynamic environment switch feature introduced in 90 patch 1 (9021). Please see the patch 1 release notes for the details

Word processing using cental european language

I wanted to use the slovak keyboard to get characters like ľ š č ťž ý á í é and Ľ Š Č ŤŽ Ý etc. It works here, and fine in MS Word, why wont it work for me in Appleworks?

Slovak does not require a Unicode app. In Appleworks you need to make sure you have a font with CE after the name selected. These will normally be down toward the very bottom of the font list.

XSLT European Language Support in XMLData class (part of Oracle XML kit)

Spell-checking dictionaries for Central-European languages

Hello,
I write texts in Slovak and as a new user of Pages I am frustrated to learn that there seems to be no Slovak dictionary for spell-checking purposes. Am I missing something? Can anybody help?

In the xsl file, BilanMeMasterJSP.xsl, I use French characters and got error messages (exceptions) out of XMLData class. But it easy to overcome this problem by adding the following command:

<xsl:output indent="yes" method="xml" encoding='ISO8859-1'/>
So that way the XSL file can include accent without generating any error message. But I still have a problem since accent in my database is not affected by this command. So I need a way to output data from my XMLData class in encoding='ISO8859-1' otherwise I got the following error message:
"Error Message: Invalid UTF8 encoding."
from the XSLT processor...

Multiple languages in one InDesign file?

I need to create an InDesign document that uses English, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese. How do I do this? Are there fonts that support these languages. Thank you

Language is a part of paragraph style, and also found in character style.
You nee to select fonts which support specific language features. When you buy a font, you see what features each font supports and which languages. I recommend to use only OTF fonts which allow embedding in PDFs.
For non-European languages you will need specific versions of InDesign installed. If you are a CC subscriber you can download and install those versions for Asian and ME languages, you need to change the app language in the preferences in the CC app, install, change to the next language, additional plug ins will be installed which will also work if you run the program in any other language. It will also install fonts for those language groups.

DIR7 Character Set Problem / Foreign Language

Hi there,
I am working on an app built using Director 7 that until now
has used the standard English (latin-1) character set.
However, I am required to deliver a new version including
some elements displayed in a second language, in this case Welsh,
which uses characters outside of the normal set. I believe those
required are included in Latin-1 Extended, otherwise in Unicode as
a whole, obviously.
I am having specific problems with two characters that appear
to be missing from Latin-1, which are: ŵ and ŷ
(w-circumflex, and y-circumflex [i think!]).
In a standard text box I create using Director, I am unable
either to paste either character in, or enter it using its
ALT+combination, let alone save to the associated database.
I have read that Dir 11 is the first version with full
Unicode support - which surprises me - however I would assume that
someone would likely have hit this, or a similar issue before the
release of this version and was wondering if there is a possible
solution without upgrade.
My possible thinking is either a declaration that allows
change of a Charset, as I might do in XHTML for example, or
deployment of an Xtra that allows me to use a different character
set.
If anyone could shed some light on the matter, it would be
very helpful! Thanks in advance!

Yes, this was always a problem for years. Back when I was
**** this, we had
some projects that needed text displayed in various
languages. Each
language presented its own challenges. Things like Greek
weren't too bad,
because the Symbol font works for most Greek text. (Only
problem was the
's' version of Sigma, which had to switch back to Times New
Roman.) Various
eastern European languages (Polish, Czech, Hungarian, etc.)
posed a problem
with some of the accents that were not available in standard
font sets. We
were forced to live without some of the more exotic accents,
but were told
that it would still be readable without them, if not exactly
correct. This
would probably be the closest to your situation, from what
little I know
about Welsh. It could be worse, though. Hebrew and Arabic
were challenging
as they are written right-to-left, and thus had to have code
written to
input them backwards. Russian was also tough, as the Cyrillic
alphabet has
more characters than the others, but I was able to find a
font to fake it.
(It replaced some of the lesser-used standard characters in
order to fill in
all the letters, which unfortunately meant that in the rare
cases where
those characters *were* needed, we had to improvise.) The
hardest by far
were any east Asian languages. In that case, I gave up on
trying to display
any of the text in text form, and just converted it all to
bitmaps. Without
Unicode, trying to display Mandarin or Japanese or Korean
correctly as text
is pretty much impossible.
