European travel and roaming charges, etc.

I am going to Italy and although won't use my phone for calling as Verizon doesn't work there, I would like to check email, listen to podcasts, and use apps.  Does anyone know if that will trigger roaming charges?  Any advice on this?  I will call Verizon to discuss as well, but I don't trust their competence on the other end of the phone....

You can only use your Verizon phone over WiFi in Italy. Your Verizon iPhone is a CDMA phone. Italy uses GSM. You will not incur any roaming charges. Whether you will be required to pay anything for the WiFi depends on the WiFi provider.

Try what you have not tried so far. You may have tried all and the Apple store maybe in order.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Using my android in Mexico without incurring roaming charges, etc.?

I want to know if I can turn off settings to be able to use my phone for pictures and using the hotels wifi and not incurring roaming charges on my phone while in Mexico.

Turn on Airplane mode and leave it there. You can turn on wifi after the phone is in Airplane Mode.

  • Iphone and roaming charges

can iPhone 6 use data when outside eu with cellular and data roaming off (o2 said its down to iMessage) ?
even though i didn't use it

If cellular data is off then the phone will not use any data. If iMessage is on it will periodically send invisible text messages to the iMessage activation server, but these use SMS, not cellular data.

E-mail required the internet.  Internet requires a smartphone and data package.  Under the old pricing structure, the smallest data package is 2GB for $30.  Under the new Share Everything plans, the smallest data -ackage is 1GB for $50, but you can share with other devices.  You should click in Shop above and check out the plans.
Verizon offers an email service for non-smartphones called Mobile Email. According to this Gizmodo article (link is below), it apparently was initially compatible with only certain of the non-smartphone models available at that time.
At the present time, every one of the non-smartphone models  listed on Verizon's website is listed as having Mobile Email compatibility.
As far as finding out what discontinued phones are compatible with Mobile Email, phonescoop lists this. For example, search for the Intensity II at phonescoop.com Halfway down the page, phonescoop says "Email Client: Yes"
On our Samsung u370 (aka Samsung Reality) and Casio Ravine 2 non-smartphones, Mobile Email is pre-installed as an unactivated app in the Media Center section of the phone.

  • Email Sync and Roaming Charges

How do you set up the IPhone so that when abroad the email can be setup to check for email say every 2 or 3 hours? Also is there a way to only sync email on demand?

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data. There's no way to set an automatic fetch interval longer than one hour. If you set Fetch to Manual, mail will only be checked when you launch the Mail app.

  • I want to take my iPad to Europe.  Will I pay roaming charges like my iPhone will incur?

I know about my iPhone and roaming charges when visiting another country, but does the same hold true of my iPad?
"On the way to Spain," Linda

I will be there in June with my pad.  If you plan to use cell service, you will pay.  If you use the wifi, you will be fine.  There are lots of hot spots in eurpoe - most big hotels, (and small ones as well), public cafes etc will have wifi available.
I was all over Englad and ireland last summer and did not spend a single night where there was not wifi available.

  • To avoid roaming charges when traveling internationally, do i put my iphone on airplane mode only or do i also need to turn off data and voice roaming

I have an iphone 4 with sprint which can't take a sim card.  To avoid roaming charges while traveling internationally, do i put my phone on airplane mode.
I read you need to turn off cellular and voice data roaming as well but when I turn on airplane mode, it seems like roaming is automatically turned off.
    Is this true?

Turning on Airplane Mode will prevent the phone from getting roaming charges as it cant connect to a cell tower.
P.S you can have WiFi on and still be in Airplan Mode. Just turn Airplane Mode on first, then turn the WiFi on

  • Huge Global Roaming charges and no alerts!!

Recently traveled to London for a week and was wary of making sure the iPhone would work and not have crazy fees.  Talked to VZW customer service before leaving and they assured that the phone was set up to work fine and would provide text message alerts for data usage that exceeded $25,$50,etc.
Got to London, phone did not work at all.  Spent a very frustrating 1st two days there trying to get it to work with VZW telling me it should work fine.
Finally got a service rep on the phone and he went through and made some 'changes' on VZW's end which made the iPhone work in London.  Had a great trip after that but then I got the bill--> $837 in data roaming charges for 41Mb of data!  Did not get a single data use $ alert message on this the whole trip.
I could not be more unhappy at this bait and switch.
    -Mike.

What exactly was the bait? Where did they switch? Did you verify that a global data plan was added to your account? If not, the $837 in data makes sense as it's over $20 per MB.

Verizon iPhone 4S SIM UNLOCK Tutorial
    SGMD1 Oct 19, 2011 9:40 PM
    Currently Being Moderated
Verizon has confirmed (here and here) they WILL unlock the SIM on the iPhone 4S, allowing for use of local SIM cards while traveling abroad (no word yet on whether this will allow for use on AT&T and T-Mobile.) This is different than the jailbreak unlocking method; SIM unlocking through Verizon is permanent and will not affect your warranty in any way.
    1. Meet the following requirements:
    * Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
    * The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
    * The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
    * The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
    * Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
If you don't meet one or more of the above requirements, call anyway. You may still get lucky.
    2. Insert a foreign SIM into the SIM card slot on the side of your phone (only required to confirm that the unlock is successful.)
    3. Call 1-800-711-8300 (Verizon Global Support) and ask the representative for a SIM unlock. Occassionally a representative may not know exactly what you are referring to; make sure you are not transferred to a different department. You are in the right place. Explain that they should have a walkthrough on how to do this, and that it allows for the use of local, non-Verizon SIM cards while traveling abroad.
    4. Get confirmation from the rep that the unlock has been applied to your account, then check your phone to make sure it recognizes your SIM and can connect (if successful it will roam on AT&T, assuming you are calling from the USA.) You will NOT see an unlock confirmation in iTunes as that is for a factory-applied unlock only.
    5. Enjoy your new unlocked iPhone 4S!
****ALSO I JUST SPOKE WITH NICHOLE (VZN GLOBAL SUPPORT) REGARDING IF THE IPHONE 4S HAS TO BE ACTIVE AFTER SIM UNLOCK AND THE ANSWER IS: NO!

  • I am going to the usa this week.  although I have a Rogers sim card inserted into my ipad I have not activated it. I don't want to incur roaming charges by activating it and taking it to the usa. any advise,

I am travelling to the usa for 10 days soon,  I wish to take my ipad, my hotel doesn't have free wireless. I have a Rogers sim card inserted by the Apple store, but I have not activated it.  I don't wish to activate it to use in the states because of roaming charges.  any suggestions.

If available in the USA, get a pre-paid micro-SIM card for the iPad and use the cellular network there.
It might be enough for 10 days (check what is available and connection rates) and could serve you again for a future trip to the USA.

And believe me, the roaming charges are truly frightening!
But in those spots where 4G/LTE works ok, speed is outstanding. So they can stick you with a HUGE roaming charge in a jiffy.....

The only thing would be an adapter, for example World Travel Adapter Kit from the Apple Store.
The power supply will accept the 240V input in Europe.
