Even slower with RAID 0 on D10
Dear all,
I finally install two 15k SAS HDD as RAID0 in my D10.
Notable speed up was expecting, but it is even slower now.
I can hear HDD reading sound while I do nothing.
Any idea?
Should I change BIOS set up for RAID?
Thanks in advance.

out of curiousity, how are you qualifying the speed difference -- with a benchmark or your personal perception compared to a previous setup?
to be perfectly blunt, i'd just dump the SAS drives and get an SSD. i did that a year ago in my D10 and couldn't be happier.
RAID (with parity) is great for a data array but i would never, ever entrust a system with a RAID 0 boot drive.

IMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9
Hi,
My 2010 imac (i5, 4G mem) has been pretty slow since mavericks - the system seems slow and unresponsive with even simple operations seeming sluggish (my 8yr old core 2 duo laptop with 10.6 was way more responsive).
I came across the thread Re: iMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9 and hoped I might be able to get some advice.
I have previously reinstalled the system from fresh to see if this would help - and while it did for a while it seems to have become slow again.
I tried starting in safe mode and it didn't seem very different. Some operations seemed slower and the window redrawing was really choppy and a bit weird (not sure if this is usual in safe mode?)
I noticed that while I was running EtreCheck and perhaps also Diskutility just now (after running the imac in safemode and then restarting it) that the Finder kept restarting. All the icons would vanish and then reload in the finder window and on the desktop. I haven't seen this before.
I have installed and run EtreCheck and the results are below. If anyone could give some advice that would be really appreciated. Thanks
EtreCheck version: 1.9.12 (48)

thankyou for helping. I think I have managed to follow both steps below. The errors that are occurring related directly to the finder crashing - I am not sure if this is related to the general slowness but it would be great to fix.
Thanks

Anyone else having problem with RAID and iTunes syncing photos in Vista?
Hello,
For whatever reason iTunes can not load some of the photos from C drive. It can do it from D drive, though VERY slow. Both C and D are NTFS system, but C is a RAID 0 drive (implemented by hardware on motherboard, Intel 82801G controller). I just wander if this is something related to iTunes not working correctly with RAID drivers, or is it something else? I should say that ALL other programs and games working fine on this drive.
Thanks for the replies. The problem is with Windows Vista using the NTFS file system, check out this post for the official solution. This has worked perfectly for me everytime I've tried it:

Interesting problem with RAID, Windows 2008 server, and Ubuntu
sooooo, i got the system working and linux loved it. just adored it.
however, Windows did not. Windwos 2008 server hard locks from time to time. i fianlly figured out that it had to do with the RAID 0 i was running, that didn't really succeed.
However, when i rebuilt the RAID and everything on it, it refuses to recognize the disk, sayign that windwos cannot determine if this drive has a valid system volume on it.
Ubuntu 9.04 server, however, just took it and made it work great.
I enabled the PCI Bus SATA to be Master in the BIOS, and then Windows Server 2008 said that it could not determine if the drive was bootable. Then i went back and redid the raid, and it did the original error.
I inserted a windows xp disk, destroyed the RAID, and then installed the software on a NEW disk. While it installed fine, it gave me an IRQL_not_less_than_or_equal error. It boots in safe mode, but no where else. I tried installing the NVRAID and MCP55 drivers in safemode and what not, but still, it refused to cooperate. I went back to ubuntu, this time the desktop/workstation versions, and i am doing an alternate install with RAID...much to my disappointment becuase now i will have to use VirtualBox to isntall windows...and if that fails, i'll be really pissed.
My settings are as follows:
SATA Controller 0-5 enabled
NVRAID- enabled
PCI BUS SATA- Option ROM Enabled, Master Enabled, and 0040h latency
MAC LAN- same as above
MAC LAN1- has master disabled, but the other stuff is the same
Serial port A is on AUTO, B is disabled, and floppy is disabled.
Option Rom is PFA relocation.
Also, my AEC A6880 is giving me a ROM expansion error, even though, in both OSes it can be seen....usualy. I just want to fix it
lastly, my LSI PCI-E scsi adapter is not being seen at ALL.
thanks guys.Quote

Turn off onboard raid ctrl 1st. There are conflicting.

What's the BSOD error? Are you using XP installation disk with included SP3? -
My Macbook Air is running slow with Yosemite.
My Macbook Air is running slow with Yosemite.
I checked out most of the blogs and everything and have removed widgets from the notification center, but everything seems to run kinda slowly.
Sure, i have the base model 2014 macbook air but that 4 gb ram should run a freakin finder just fine. I had Mavericks installed before, and with that, i could do everything. I even made cool music in GarageBand and nothing was lagging for me. Now i installed Yosemite... Everything is lagging. Scrolling seems like it happens around 10 FPS. That aint good man. Memory cleaner says around 1gb ram free when only the finder is running in the background (before it did around 2). I just uninstalled Memory Cleaner o I'm not looking at that little amount of memory. I don't know what to do now? I would appreciate it, if someone would help me. Otherwise, ill just wait for a new update.Since it's new I would take it back for repair or exchange under your warranty before bothering to read further.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Can't install Win7 with Raid 0 on a K9A2 CF
Motherboard: MSI K9A2 CF
DDR: 8GB (4*2GB)
Proc: AMD Athlon 620
HDD's: 2*Hitachi 640GB (same drive models)
So the problem i'm having is that i can't get Windows7 to get installed in raid 0. I bought this set of hardware to do some experimenting with small business server 2008. I've installed SBS2008 in Raid 1, and seemed to work (but i've never crashed a disk to test it). The tests went fine, and since a month or two this PC/Server is doing nothing.
Now i've been trying to get Windows7 installed but can't get it going with a Raid 0 setting (that's why i'm doubting if the RAID 1 with sbs was working correctly).
First problem i'd run into was that my DVD wasn't accepted (missing device driver). I've created a bootable USB disk and seem to work.
The problem starts when i should select the disk.
First, i've setup the following in the RAID-Bios:
I've done it with 1 array, or with 2 array's it doesn't change anything.
In the normal bios (updated last night to the latest version, which actually slows the systems down during the install). I've selected RAID in this screen
RAID (i've selected RAID)
When i get the option to select a drive, it doesn't display any drives so I select the option to add a driver.
These are the drivers i've downloaded:
But when selecting these drivers I've get a negative response
(with or without "Hide drivers that are not compatible......"
When i download other drivers (I actually tried them all) i get some response:
But when i select this driver, it takes several minutes to proces:
But it comes back blank:
When i select in the bios other options (like IDE)
It comes default with a disk:
But this is half of the array (1 drive). When i try to partition it, it fails. So it isn't accessible.
Last thing: i've tested with all 3 available Bios options (IDE, RAID and AHCI) in combination with all (Win7, Vista and WinXP) drivers. But there are no differences.
I understand i made a long post, but normally i just figure it out myself with researching on the web. I have tried everything i can think of. But it seems that:
1. I made an error configuring the raid-arrays (with one big array, the results are the same).
2. I made an error in the bios? (setting should be raid, other settings i should think of?)
3. I'm working with the wrong drivers? I think i'm doing something wrong driver related but can't pin the problem.
4. Or... ?
I'm open to suggestions, i've run out of option. :(
Thank you.Quote from: Fredrik on 28-March-10, 23:42:10

If you don't mind the cat's response, this is perhaps useful:
http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=261&threadid=117185
Great link, seems to work. So after trying everything it was just a simple driver error.
I've tried the drivers from 1337 but they didn't work. But the chinese drivers did work:
http://www.rayfile.com/files/edf377e1-ec6f-11de-aad5-0014221b798a/
I don't know how or what. But the RAID console seemed to get 2 disks (2 raid arrays) and installed and formatted correctly from there on.
Installed Win7, booted and all the hardware was accepted.
If anyone has a line to MSI or someone from MSI is reading this: If needed i'm willing to run some kind of debugger if it helps. But otherwise I would suggest checking the drivers offered on the website because the drivers on the MSI website are faulty for some of your users. On the K9A2 they will not work with RAID with Windows 7 64-bit (the official drivers I mean).
Bas to answer your question: I have no particular interest in running a 64-bit operating system. But when it failed to work it became a challenge to get it working. I could have switched to 32bit immediatly but I don't like to give up the first moment something doesn't go as planned, and in the end I had so much time invested I just wanted it to work under 64bit .
Frederik, thanks again for the link, really helpfull. Thank you all for helping and giving suggestions. -
Maximum no of HDD with RAID in 790FX GD70 ??
Respect to All experts !!
I have 790FX-GD70 in which 6x SATA II ports are provided by ATI SB750 chipset with RAID facility. I am currently using 2x Seagate 500GB in Raid 0.
I want to re-create it with 6x HDDs (Just for benching and self knowledge as I know performance will not be 6 times faster or even 4 times).
Can ATI SB750 RAID use all 6x SATA ports with Raid 0 ???,
because my friend has an Intel board named P7P55D Pro E and according to him he is restricted to use more than 4 HDD in RAID.I am using 18 file adapters at sender side .
added 6 more in dev and UAT total 24 working fine in these environemnts..
my file adapters never gave me a problem unless and untill structure problem..

Aperture 3.03 For me preview generation performance is now even slower!
Set up:
24" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Radeon HD2600 with 256Mb, 1Tb 7200 Seagate Barracuda HD.
Aperture 3.03, RAW 3.02
OSX 10.6.3
With a Canon 5D Mark II RAW photo (25Mb or so) with some simple adjustments generating a preview is now taking 1 minute per photo. Which is even slower than version 3.02.
I have the previews full size and on quality 8.
Does anyone with the 5D see faster performance on preview of this size, on this sort of Mac?
I want to try and find out if this is normal performance or not before going through all the things I tried in 3.02 which had no effect (clearing caches, rebuilding library, rebuilding thumbnails, de-fragging by copying library to another drive and back, deleting preference files).
I've also had the problem with 3.03 where faces get rotated 90 degrees, so not too impressed so far with this version.Same here. Previews at 1680x1680 (the max rez of my 20" iMac screen), quality 8, and they take about 2 secs each on the iMac spec'd in my sig. Same on my MBPro, though those are constrained to 1440x max.
Are you talking about just generating a standard preview, or a 100% view render, or what?
I know (still even with 3.0.3) it takes a LONG time to render a 100% view of a photo if it has a bunch of adjustments on it (highlight/shadows + edge sharpen) are the worst for this)... But it does seem a bit faster doing this task now, than with 3.0.2... -
SCCM 2012 PowerShell script gets progressively slower with each machine added to a collection
Firstly, I hope this question firs in this forum.
I have a PowerShell script that I created the imports a CSV file and adds the machine names to a collection as a direct membership. There are 5000 machines total in the list. When the script first starts, the average per machine is just a few tenths of a
second. Once it reaches about 10% the average is up to almost 4 seconds and that time is getting larger with each machine. I tried using the CMDLets for SCCM but they were even slower than the WMI seemed to be.
What is the reason for this increase?
Is there anything I can do to not have this happen?
My script:

AddToCollection-WithWMII haven't checked the complete code, but it doesn't look very efficient. For example I would take the collection query out the loop for all the pcs, simply because it's always the same and would save you about 4999 queries.

Additionally, you could likely replace most of the WMI calls you do with the built in SCCM PowerShell cmdlets. The two lines below will check to see if a Device Object for a specific PC exists and if it does, adds it to your collection
$PCID = Get-CMDevice -Name $PC.SerialNumber
if ($PCID -ne $null) {
Add-CMDeviceCollectionDirectMembershipRule -CollectionName $CollectionName -ResourceId $PCID
If you want to check to see if the collection exists before trying to add devices to it, you can use the Get-CMDeviceCollection cmdlet.
Get-CMDeviceCollection -Name $CollectionName

CS3 Still Very Slow with psd files
I'm still having terrible performance issues with CS3 and imported CMYK psd files containing spot colours. I have a 9MB psd file with two spot colours imported into a layer in Illustrator, with some illustrator line work on top. Just zooming in give me a 5 second screen redraw, everything is very sluggish and occasionally I get a crash. I still get these weird alert box saying "Generating Pixels" now and again when importing the psd files.
G5 Dual 2.0GHz, 2.5GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11, Illustrator 13.02, Photoshop 10.0.1.
I'm not having these issues on a different mac running CS2.I'm thinking it might be RAM, I have Photoshop and Illustrator open at the same time. I have around 100GB of scratch disk space.
But weirdly the slowness is not apparent using CS2. Things are just dead slow with a Photoshop file placed in Illustrator CS3. These files are only 30MB, but contain 3 spot channels + CMYK. Even with preview mode switched off, it's still very slow and I mean everything slows down.
There is a lot of disk activity going on, so maybe my hard disks on this 3 year old mac are just getting too long in the tooth.
What drives me nuts is I remember doing the same kind of work in Illustrator 8 on a G4 running System 9 and everything was MUCH faster.
Oh, and I'd better not mention how fast Freehand was for this kind of work... -
Imac is very slow with downloading mail
My imac is the ast weeks very slow with downlaoading mail.
I am using mail 5.3 from apple
Nothing has recently been chanched in my internet setting or internet speed
Anybody an idea what can be wrong?Hi, I worked out what you recommended, but I do not see any difference at speed.
Mail starts normal, though that is also somewhat slow,
Before it has finished downloading mail (even is there os no mail!) it takes sometimes 2 minutes!
Also there was no"boing"when starting up, with following your procedure, is it normal? -
MacPro Running Super slow with Photoshop CS5
My MacPro is running extremely slow with Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried uppping the ram usage to over 14 gigs of ram and its still even slower than my macbook pro. the healing brush is the slowest, but even layer masking seems to lag a lot. how can I fix this?
There are dozens of threads, faq, guides, tips on how to configure a Mac especially for CS5. Best places to start.
http://macperformanceguide.com/index_topics.html
http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Intro.html
Scratch drive or array
Disable Spotlight on scratch
Move your files to scratch for work and then save as you go and move back to media drive when done
fast system drives. maybe even SSD if you can, or 10K 600GB VR
Upping RAM helps if you work with large images, layers, etc (in some cases 16 or 24 or 32GB, and if you can run in 64-bit mode get a little better).
Some specs on the setup?

Acer Aspire 5253 Slow with archlinux
Hello,
I have an Acer Aspire 5253 laptop with the following characteristics:
6Gb RAM
2 cpu's AMD 1.2 GHz 64-bit
Ati radeon hd 6250
500Gb HDD
Archlinux use for about a year. I have used many of the other distributions
existing linux and my experience with these has been quite frustrating.
Gnome3 - Gnome-shell:
The free drivers do not support for 3D and everything works quite slow. menus
running slow and when I open more than 3-4 windows all works pretty bad.
With proprietary drivers experience with gnome-shell is reduced to shit.
KDE:
Works better than gnome 3, much more fluid. The problem is that when I open several
windows desktop becomes slow. Eg. Use GIMP and paint with the brush is
delay between the mouse and the lines painted.
XFCE:
It works better than Gnome 3 and KDE but I wonder: Why use a archlinux
laptop with 6GB of ram and a "good" graphics card if I can not even draw
with a brush in GIMP?
Could anyone advise me to use my laptop so that you can leverage your hardware without problems? What CUDA program are you running? The only software I use that takes advantage of CUDA is Blender, but I build it from source and it finds the CUDA libs just fine. What CUDA dev package did you install?

My computer is extremely slow, with the rainbow wheel appearing with every click. It is one year old, and has all the most recent updates. Why is it so painfully slow?
That sounds horrible. There are a number of reasons it could occur.
The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Does the ipad run faster/slower with verizon 4g or 4g wifi without the verizon 4g option
I'm looking at purchasing my first iPad and I'm not sure if it's worth spending the extra money to get the wifi and wireless or would it be just as fast to get the wifi version and use my 4g mifi card from Verizon?
What will you use the 4g for? Do you travel often for work, go to very remote places? Why do you have mifi? Do you use your mifi with your phone on a regular basis? Can you use it for your phone and ipad? And don't you pay for mifi on a monthly basis even if you rarely use it? With 4g, you pay on a monthly basis so you might only need to do that a few times a year during the months you use it. I would call Verizon and find out. And I'm sure you're aware that they're always trying to sell you on spending more money so be careful how you word your questions.
I quickly googled the mifi question and saw this article. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/why-i-ordered-a-wi-fi-only-ipad/12470. Please read the comments to the article, too. Some agreed with the writer, while others had very different opinions. If you google your question, you'll get many opinions from professional tech people, users, and former users of 3g and 4g. This might help you make a decision.
We got our first ipad, (64gb ipad 2 wi-fi only) for my husband in June and one of my sons got the same today. Both are refurbs from the Apple online store. They come with brand new outer shell, brand new battery, and full one year warranty (other places that sell refurbs probably do not refresh their refurbs as Apple does, so if you go refurb, use the Apple online store. They're great! We saved a lot of money, even with the 64gb. (I know people love their new ipads, but this way we didn't have to deal with the possible overheating, yellow hue on screens, etc. We did not get 3g because if we are somewhere and need 3g, we all have phones that we can use. And though we won't get Siri on ipad 2 when it comes out, we don't care about it - just enjoying the freedom of 64gb, etc.
So, I suggest you evaluate your needs, check with Verizon, and google your questions. I'm sure you'll make the decision that is best for you!
At any rate, enjoy your first ipad! We think you'll love it!

Forgot to tell you -- to answer your question - I have no idea if the ipad runs faster or slower with or without 4g! (Verizon would probably tell you faster because they'll make more money, so I suggest you also google that.)
Hope this helps!
